How can you charge$10.95 for an Oroweat bagel with a bit of Jimmy Dean sausage about 1/8 " of scrambled egg and Velveeta cheese? The croissant version is just as bad. I really, really wanted to like this place. Sweet lady. Beautiful smile. Super courteous. But I can't escape the fact that I ordered ahead of four white people who all came separately and ordered sandwiches and coffee and drinks and fairly complicated orders, some seemingly more complex or around equal footing in simplicity compared to mine. She prepared them all for them one after the other while I had ordered well ahead of all of them. Mind you, these four white people were not in a group. They were customers who came in separately. Not only did the staff person prepare the other customers' food ahead of me, they had enough time--all of these other customers--to sit, eat, enjoy their food, scroll through their phones, and pack up and leave BEFORE she even started preparing my food. I waited about 30-40 minutes for my order. She knew I had an order from the beginning since we obviously spoke about the order when I ordered it in person and sat there for 30-40 minutes in full view waiting. When she finally handed me the order, she was sweet but she didn't offer any extra donut or anything to compensate. I wasn't expecting it but for someone to know she started my order AFTER serving four people who were behind me, it's just disappointing. She even apologized for the delay but, ma'am, you served people who came AFTER me and enjoyed their sit down meals and had time to relax and leave and only THEN started my order which I placed EARLIER than ALL of those customers. Not very nice. I had even tipped her very generously at the beginning when I placed my order. I now regret that. None of the four separate white customers gave her a dime. Zero tip from them. Yet she treated them with extreme priority over me even though I ordered well ahead of them. She prepared their food within a few minutes of their ordering. There's something fundamentally wrong with that. This place could do better with ensuring fairness with ordering so people like me aren't left out in the cold for a long, long time waiting right there watching later people eat and finish while these others get a huge leg up unfairly. I don't think I'll come back. This left me with a gross taste in my mouth figuratively to experience this apparent slight? Which is sad because she's friendly and sweet and the only one working there and has to juggle everything herself. Next time an apology should be met with action to correct it like at least a free pastry to compensate or even a partial refund. I've been staying at the Hotel Fiona for about 5 days now and every morning (except Sunday) my mom and I have come here for our coffee and breakfast. I've been ordering the iced Vietnamese coffee everyday which is amazing!! Super strong with just the right amount of sweetness. My mom says they make really delicious coffee as well. We've gotten donuts, we've gotten those little stuffed turnovers, we've had the chicken Banh mi sandwich, and we've had a BLT sandwich on sourdough. Bacon in every bite! The meat proportions in the banh mi are low in a sandwich that costs $8. I expected the bread to be super soft and fresh since there seems to be donuts here also per Yelp. The bread was thick and a bit tough. The meat proportions were low. It satisfied the craving but I certainly would not call it the best or one of the best. The orange juice was nice and fresh. Doughnut holes were cheap and big but not entirely warm/hot. This is definitely a place to check out if you are in the mood for a solid croissant sandwich. I knew Caffe Moda was somewhere down 7th Street, but I just didn't know what motivated them to move to my neck of the woods. There isn't much foot traffic in these parts during the day when they're open. I don't blame them for not being open in the evening, but I think they could thrive more if they were open on Sunday and had longer hours on Saturday. The place is always empty when I walk by, so I don't think people are prone to discover it. I just don't if people ever will unless you count the armies of foreign tourists from the adjacent motels. It's a big space but not particularly inviting. The place lacks warmth to become a real hang-out spot. They offer a long list of sandwiches and coffee drinks as well as a few salads. That's really it. I tried a $5.95 BLT, a modest sandwich on sourdough (see photo). It was perfectly decent but nothing that would stand out in your mind five minutes after you ate it. Their coffee drinks are more Baskin & Robbins than Starbucks. I was convinced by the zealous manager to order a $4.55 Iced Marble Mocha, which was really just a puckery-sweet shake (see photo). But maybe if they turned the place into an ice cream parlor, now that would be different... My favorite café and the best Bahn Mi in SOMA, seriously. There are a few places that serve Bahni Mi in the neighborhood but my favourite is here. Every flavour is wonderful, the chicken being my favourite (today I got combination though!). I make my own pho at home and grab a sandwich here to go with it. The donuts here are great too. Especially if you get there early enough to grab a filled one, or one of the very comforting filled croissants. The Raspberry Filled Croissant is divine. I'm surprised that the new owners (as of a few months ago) did not change the name, because they used to run California Bakery up a few blocks. I love coming here each weekend for the donuts. The owners make super fresh pastries and donuts that are absolutely delicious (their chocolate frosted donut is excellent and not overly sweet like many other places) - and my husband is obsessed with their hazelnut coffee. I'm also happy that the family of owners seem a lot more relaxed than when they were at California Bakery. I do not blame them; they had to deal with a constant influx of crazy and/or drugged up zombies wandering in and wrecking havoc (one of them even pretended to work there and tried to serve me food....). I will note that before the ownership change, I had come once to Caffe Moda and left unimpressed. But for those that have written it off, come again now and try it out. In addition they carry breakfast pastries, fresh fruit, snack chips and a large selection of bottled cold drinks. I'm not a regular customer, but I have dropped in on several occasions for a fresh made to order sandwich. Indeed, the low-ceiling and windows looking out on a random hallway give it a kind of campus-rec-center-basement vibe. The sandwiches are actually pretty good, especially the Rafi, with chicken, brie and apple. But for $6.95 the portions were a little too small. They were previously located in the Tenderloin district and had been there for 7 years. They make a good breakfast sandwich. I usually come here for sandwiches and waffles. Everything is made to order. All food items are a bit on the pricier side, but that's normal as most small businesses are like this. They used to be open a hour or so later but they close at around 2:30 now. The people working here are super friendly and nice. I remember somebody there gave me a couple bags of chips on the house because they were about to expire soon. The five star machine was not working when I was there today. I tried to buy breakfast here and had an awful experience with a rude cashier. I walk by this place every day and will never be back. I ordered a bacon, egg, and avocado sandwich and paid $9 for it. But the woman apparently misheard my order, which happens, and she informed me it would be an extra $2 to add bacon and take off the cheese. I checked the price for what she thought she rang me up for, which was less than the $9 I'd already paid, so why is she coming after me for $2 bacon?? When I questioned the price, she rang it up again and it was just over $9, yet she insisted I pay the difference for her mistake. I would have, if she'd remade the sandwich. Instead she peeled off the melted cheese and threw some bacon on it and continued to ask for another $2. She said it wasn't worth her time to remake it. Nice spot for breakfast, catching up on the news and getting some work done. You can order and pay through grub hub and if your order is over $30 they'll deliver. It's not too noisy here. Every once in a while you may hear a motorcycle speed by or cars honking in traffic. I gave this place a 3 because I paid around $10 for a breakfast combo that comes with an orange juice but realized after I paid that the OJ comes in a sauce container. I ordered a fruit salad and the fruit wasn't as fresh. See pics. Also, the service was mediocre. The guy working seemed to be working alone and it got a little busy. I've tried out Caffe Moda a couple times for lunch and if I had to sum it all up in one sentence, it's a nice, quiet haven from the hustle and bustle of SoMa. They offer a huge variety of unique sandwiches, your basic sandwiches and a lunch time combo special that includes a beverage...all priced decently. So far, I've had the Rafi's Special and their Chicken Salad Sandwich. The Rafi's Special was delicious! I really liked the Brie and Apples in it, but the chicken breast not so much, as it was thin and seemed like a processed chicken breast. The Chicken Salad was good; just a little too much mayo for me, which is weird because I certainly love my mayo! In addition to sandwiches, they also serve breakfast and have a full espresso bar, which offer a nice selection of beverages, less the Starbucks pricing. There are quite a few tables inside the café and they have one TV tuned to some sporting event. Both times I've been to Caffe Moda, it was no more than myself and one or two other individuals at a time, which certainly made it a nice dining experience if you wanted some alone time to read or catch up on Facebook status updates. Prices are a bit high, but in my general opinion, lunch time bargains are hard to find near the design center in SOMA. For the last 8 months Caffe Moda has been my favorite lunch time spot to escape from my stuffy office building for a quick and relatively cheap meal and a moment to vent over the preposterous working conditions in the interior design business. Many of the smoothie/espresso drinks are way overpriced and the full-size salads are also a bit expensive, considering that this caffe is designed to be a lunch-time watering hole. The sandwich options are very diverse, and I would always recommend the Smoked Provolone to anyone--- rosemary foccacia, tomato, greens, basil, provolone, roasted tomato vinaigrette... aaah delightful.
