After a stroll from the Wednesday farmer's market in Little Italy, I had a craving for Italian as the establishments nearby caught my interest. I've worked in Little Italy in the past but have never tried Caffe Italia. I got their Italian sandwich, with the default bread being focaccia. Inside there were prosciutto, salami, ham, provolone, tomato, and house made balsamic vinaigrette. It had a good balance of deli meats, and the focaccia bread was thick to hold it all together. I thought it was tasty as well as their coffee, however my coffee wasn't filled up all the way. It is strong and their roast is bold! I liked it a lot, although a lunch meal can get costly so it would just be from time to time if I were to revisit. Not only that, but they also have a small selection of gelatos which look pretty authentic like Spumoni! Other desserts I saw were mousse, tiramisu, cannoli, cheesecake, carrot cake, and rugelach. The cafe is small and the service may take a bit if you are waiting for the food, but overall, I enjoyed my coffee and sandwich. read more

The Caffe Emmline is SO SO GOOD!!! Two shots of espresso blended with espresso bean gelato... wow! Service is friendly and pretty fast! There isn't that much seating inside, but I feel like this is a great place to get a drink to go and wander around Little Italy. read more

Stayed at a hotel walking distance from Little Italy and passed by this cafe with very kind staff and an amazing iced coffee (went here in two occasions). I love that they have wifi and outdoor seating. I did not eat here, but they also serve light lunch and pastries. Highly recommend for quality. read more

This was our first stop upon landing in San Diego. It shared a courtyard with our hotel, and since our room wasn't ready yet, having coffees to wake up seemed like the perfect plan. We took turns going inside so one of us could stay with our luggage. I stopped in first and asked about one of their milkshake-esque beverages. The location was super convenient and right next to the farmers market happening at the same time. I ordered a medium iced vanilla lattes with almond milk. A fairly easy drink to make and hard to mess up. The drink was a 7/10. Wasn't a big fan of the coffee, drank more milk than actual coffee - probably should've asked for an extra shot. Very busy in the morning hours and it's no surprise. I love the sunny vibe that they have outside by the sidewalk or if you want a cooler area they do have outside seating behind. That is pretty much shaded. Food really excellent for small bites. You can get really full. It's gotta be the cheese! Ordered the cheese egg Panini and could barely finish! Add that to the morning latte you'll be set to continue walking little Italy. The restroom is quite horrific, though I must say it's very dirty and unkept. I go to Cafe Italia for the salad and the gelato. So, I feel good about myself and guilty at the same time. I love the Fragola Salad, adding chicken. The salad has strawberries, avocado, almonds and goat cheese, among other items. The flavors go together very well, but the chicken is the highlight for me. It is so much better than the typical chopped chicken breast you get at most restaurants. The problem (and the reason for only 4 stars) is that they are too often out of chicken. It is very frustrating to order this salad only to find out there is no chicken. I have tried to substitute turkey, but that doesn't even come close. On to the gelato. I can only say it's the best I have had in San Diego. It comes from Gelato Vero Caffe and is so rich and creamy. The Spumoni is absolutely amazing, and I am not a huge Spumoni fan normally. It is just so much better than any Spumoni I have ever had. I abandon the Spumoni, though, when they have the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup gelato. And, who can blame me? It's the kind of dessert you dream about for days before and after. Unfortunately, they don't often have that flavor available. But, when the chicken is available and I enjoy one of their great gelatos, a lunch at Cafe Italia is truly fantastic!! read more

I had a disappointing experience at Cafe Italia mainly because of the customer service. When I went to grab a lid for my coffee, they were all out of the size I needed and only had smaller lids available. I walked up to the counter to let the barista know, and right away she responded with an attitude and pointed to the self serve station. I had to explain that the only lids left were for smaller coffees. Once she realized they were actually out, she told me to wait. It took about 5-7 minutes for the self serve station to be restocked, which honestly I didn't really mind since I was still waiting for my other order anyway. However, after noticing that drinks for customers behind me were already being handed out, I had to ask about my order. The response I received was something along the lines of them having a lot of orders, and another employee at the counter had to step in and confirm that my order was next. It seemed like the barista may have been having a rough morning, but the attitude and lack of communication made the experience frustrating.
