The theme for the summer has been...bakery! After Cako and I finished our walked, I searched for another bakery to try. L'Opera came up and was close so I drove over. Parking can be a bit of a challenge downtown, but we scored one right in front. Friendly "good morning" when I entered. There were three people ahead of me which gave me a chance to look at what they had. There are some interesting baked goods, one being the quinoa muffin. Baking with quinoa can be challenging, and I felt the muffin was dense but lacking moisture, but not crumbly dry. The flavor was good! I also had their crispy and not sickly sweet cinnamon roll. The pasty was a nice golden brown with lots of cinnamon! So good! Perfect plain croissant! The pain au chocolat had the perfect balance of chocolate to pain, and more like dark chocolat. Also loved the lemon blueberry muffin! The friendly worker even gave me a complimentary 4th of July cookie which I appreciated since it was delicious! They have a cozy dining area and a couple of tables outside. If I had more time, Cako and I would've stayed and had breakfast outside. Though she was in the car watching me.... Cako Approves!

Not a smooth operation. Menus don't match to those online, posted board in the cafe, or the printed menu on the counter. The poor woman taking orders had no idea how to ring up anything. She was not trained, and the other employees or managers were very irritated to have to help her. I felt so bad for her. I ordered my breakfast with an over hard egg. Then my egg came out over easy+, but when I sent it back, it came back nuked in a microwave, half cooked just shy of over hard and the other side unchanged. I had to get up again to ask for a fork and napkin. Fork was dirty. Then I noticed the dark spots on the arugula. I was done. We left. Never again.

We just popped in for a coffee, but I instantly wanted to come back. They have incredible coffee, the vanilla bean latte tastes like dessert, and so many pastry options, including a few gluten free choices. It's a cute, small location with the kindest people working.

My husband and I walked to Café de L'Opera after having breakfast at Cloud 9 Deli. He had spoken to a few locals in regards to where to get coffee in the vicinity of our hotel. He was told to check out the little French café around the corner. So we did. It's theme did remind me of European-style cafés I'd been to. I ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee while my husband asked for a café au lait. Since we had eaten prior to coming here, we ended up not trying anything from their pastry case but it all looked really good. Our coffees were made to order and delicious. I really enjoyed my Vietnamese iced coffee. If you want some good coffee and mouthwatering pastries, check out Café de L'Opera near Petco Park.

If you've read any of my other reviews, you realize that I am eating my way around California. And boy am I loving it. This is my first time at this lovely San Diego establishment, on December 30, 2024. As I was driving to San Diego from Monterey, I stopped in at a bakery and had opera cake, so it seemed appropriate that I stop into an opera café, don't you think? Many numerous lovely pastries to choose from, I had an outstanding tuna salad sandwich., and a wonderful fruit tart. Decor is casual. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Prices are reasonable. Very highly recommended and it's in a great part of this lovely city. I can't comment on parking, because I walked here from my hotel.

Ok this little French bakery and coffee shop is one of my favorite coffee spots in East Village! I am amazed to have found it open since it's been maybe 7-10 years since I had visited last. I used to go here to study during law school and going now as an attorney was very nostalgic -- nothing has changed, still cozy, still inviting, still serving delicious drinks and small baked goods. I've always found a place to sit even on days where it appears busier than others. It feels like a little bit of France is in San Diego! Check them out!

They were doing the Tuesday night date special, which includes one appetizer & entree each and a dessert & bottle of wine to share for $55/pp as of March 2026. I'm not familiar with the names of French dishes, so I'll write descriptions of the food instead. Appetizers: * mushroom ravioli * phyllo filled with cheese & salad Entrees: * braised short rib * stuffed chicken Dessert: * Cookie My favorite thing was actually the phyllo filled with cheese! It was really unique, and a good combination of savory/sweet, and the salad was a refreshing addition. I would honestly consider ordering a full portion of this to have as a meal. My husband loved his braised short ribs. It was so tender. The ambiance is lovely-- I dressed up a bit more than I normally would, and I didn't feel particularly overdressed or anything, but other people showed up in casual clothing too. Every detail of dinner was well thought out and service was amazing. We didn't feel rushed at all, so we were able to enjoy a slow-paced anniversary dinner. We would definitely come back to try their normal menu too!

It was also my husband's birthday so I really wanted it to be special! We got seated as soon as we arrived in a booth! We immediately were greeted by Nancy who by the way was amazing at that time! The food were amazing and delicious we started with Soup à l'oignon which was great then the raviolis aux champignons which was also amazing but we wished that it would be much more warmer... We then followed by steak frites aux poivre, we asked it medium rare not cut and sauce on the side and it was perfect it comes with brocolis and green beans in the side with french fries and ask for ketchup and aïoli which was yummy as well! We wanted to make it a french dinner so we also ordered a chessboard after the main course! We were so glad that we ordered one entrée as we could have not made it to the dessert if we were to do the cheeseboard and dessert as well! After the cheeseboard we ordered the profiteroles for dessert and a Cappuccino! The dinner birthday was a success I do recommend it for people that are looking for an authentic french restaurant! Cons were the ambiance it was a little bit loud and also they weren't giving any complimentary birthday dessert also, the bread at the beginning were delicious but if you want a refill they will charge you for it. We brought a bottle of red wine which was free corkage since we also ordered a bottle of white from their menu. But the corkage fee would be $45! Overall we had a wonderful time! And I highly recommend it for the food!

The white wine of the day was Chardonnay and the cocktail of the day was an agave spritz. Our server was kind enough to tell us that the burgers did not come with fries, just in case we felt like the portions weren't sufficient. Our server was quick with our drinks and refills. The food took a bit longer to come out. *Agave Spritz: a fragrant take on a spritz. I actually appreciated how it was not overly carbonated nor sugary. This was a refreshing pairing with all the fried items we ordered. *Pommes Frites: classically crispy and fluffy. Came with a choice of ketchup or aioli. *Croquettes: came with five airy and crispy balls on a pool of mornay sauce. The menu mentioned an aioli, but my order did not come with any. Thankfully, the balls were flavorful themselves. The mornay sauce was on the thicker side and there was some clumpiness, but it added pleasant creaminess. *Burger Parisienne: my preferred burger of the two offered. The bordelaise was done well, and the red wine added a complex sweetness to the burger. The patty was thick and the toppings made the overall flavor similar to an In-N-Out burger. *Burger Americaine: a classic American burger that resembled In-N-Out, but with a thicker patty. Good thing I enjoy both. The vegetables were fresh, but I would have liked a bit more of the special sauce. *Little Gems: a rather acidic and simple dressing. The little gems lettuce was cleaned well and was crispy. The radish offered some crunch and the herbs were fragrant. I would have cut the herbs a bit more though. This was quite a satisfying happy hour experience, although nothing was exceptional besides the croquettes. I would like to return to try their breakfast options, and Saint James does offer some interesting dishes that others do not. The pricing was fair for the quality we received.

The ambience of this place was great, although maybe next time we'll sit in their outside/garden/patio area. The inside was just as nice, felt like we were in Paris as this is a French inspired/themed restaurant. Our waiter Kyle was really nice. He seemed a little busy though which helped in his lack of attention, but overall he was cool. Did a great a job answering our questions. We opted for a lot of different choices. The list is in no particular order but will highlight which was a table fave. - Parker Loaf [$12] need this to be a tad bit bigger to justify the price. Really good loaf of bread to start with though esp the rosemary butter. 4/5 - Fresh Oysters, 6 ct [$21] Really good oysters, super fresh, very "fat" & "meaty" 5/5 - Granita Oysters 6ctx2 [$25] Same oysters as above, BUT filled w/a yuzu/lemon concoction along w/pear pearls, TABLE FAVE for sure 5/5 (started with a 6 count before our mains & HAD to get another 6 after) - Mussels [$27] Very fresh and well seasons mussels, although the sauce was a bit odd tasting. It was white wine mixed with something they called "a cousin of absinthe" 4/5 - Wagyu tartare [$31] YUM! TABLE FAVE, wish it came with more bread though, that bone marrow was chef's kiss along with the sauce they paired the dish with 5/5 For the mains, two did the Top Sirloin [$48 each] which was described as 'melt in your mouth goodness' which came w/a square shaped potato & a piece of biggish mushroom. The two others did the Short Rib [$42 each] which was described as 'the demi-glaze makes' & 'it's fall off the bone.' I had the Poisson which was the fresh catch of the day (salmon) [$38] & it was really good! Came with bokchoy which was drenched in a maple sauce. That contradicted the lemony/citrusy sauce the salmon came in. There were greens on top of the salmon to complete the meal. Solid dish! I'd skip the deconstructed creme brulee [$15] as that was nobody's favorite. It left us leaving a "real" creme brulee... Do get the opera cake [$15] tho, that one was a TABLE FAVE! Wormwood is nestled in an old house courtyard that is absolutely brimming with charm and character, the environment is truly fantastic and sets a lovely mood. The greens didn't seem fresh and had some wilted/rotten leaves, appearing as though it might have been sitting out too long before reaching the table. A quick tip on logistics: Like many popular spots in San Diego, parking was a bit of a challenge, so definitely give yourself some extra time to find a space in the neighborhood. The hostess had a note for our anniversary celebration. They also printed a little celebatory note directly on the menu - a great personal touch. Our server was friendly and answered any questions we had. We ordered the beef tartare, smoked aged duck, and the deep fried sand bass. For the drink we ordered the Seasame Soirée. While our food came out pretty slow, I'd say it was worth the wait. We also enjoyed 2 complimentary glasses of bubbly while we waited as part of our anniversary celebration. The restarant itself is decorated beautifully with a jazzy ambiance. The interior had bits of gold and green with a beautiful pearlescent leafy wallpaper. The bar is located in the center and also doubles as a centerpiece to the restuarant. Restrooms are located in the back - there we many private, clean and spacious rooms. Below is a summary of the food we ordered: Beef Tartare (5/5) - Savory, sweet and spicy beef tartare dressed in fish sauce and thai chilis. Paired alongside fresh herbs like cilantro, shiso, argula and radicchio. The sesame rice crackers were light and airy. Smoked Dry Aged Duck (5/5) - Perfectly cooked, sweet and salty aged smoked duck paired with rice noodles, herbs and 2 different sauces. I appreciated the many ways you can wrap and enjoy the duck. I do wish the slices of duck were either smaller or thinner - it's hard to eat in one bite. Whole Fried Sand Bass (4/5) - I'll always order a whole firied fish wherever I go and this was no expection. I loved the sweet & sour ginger sauce. The fish was a bit over-fried in my personal opinion, but the inside is still very soft and tender. Sweet & Sour Rice Noodles (5/5) - Aboslutely delicious! Slippery and cold rice noodles dressed in fish sauce and other seasonings. It's not overpowering at all and goes great with the Whole Fried fish as well. Seasame Soiree Cocktail (5/5) - A very unique drink made with gin, ginger, coconut, seasame seeds and more. It was very fragrant in the best way. The flavor really develops after the first sip. I love how nutty and decadent yet light this drink is. Overall, I had a great experience here and this is one of the top restaurants I've had the pleasure of enjoying in SD. The reason for that is that they are a very small restaurant, and seem to have a regular following in the community. On weekends, reservations fill up quickly, Anyway, I I was able to secure reservations at last and met up with two of my friends on a Friday night in December. It was quite the rainy night. Luckily, I found free parking easily nearby, as perhaps, the rain was keeping the crowds away. Once I stepped inside, the restaurant had a cozy European and vintage feel. The walls had black an white photographs of France, and the bar looks like it was straight out of an old movie. I absolutely loved the decor. I was greeted quickly as I walked in. I was the first or our party to arrive. I was given water and a menu, and the server checked to see if I needed anything else. Once my friends arrived, they were met with the same level of attentive service. With this particular group of friends, we generally share each dish so that we can taste a variety. Here the menu is small. I can appreciate a small menu, as it became apparent that each dish is treated with attention. However, it was a bit challenging to find dishes that we would all enjoy off of the small menu, due to our variety of preferences. We decided to start with the pâte and the rillettes de saumon ( an indulgent salmon spread). Both were served with baguette and butter. For our entrees, we had the truite amandine (almond trout) and the short rib. Honestly, all of the food had so much flavor and was perfectly cooked. I cannot comment on the pâte, as I did not try it. However, it was all I could do not to fill up on the salmon and baguette while trying to save room for the entrees. The trout was delicate and flavorful. The short rib was bold and melted in our mouths. For drinks, I chose the rose petal martini followed by a Cote de Rhone with my dinner. The rose petal martini was good and had fresh pomegranate, but I wish it had a stronger rose water/ rose petal flavor. My friend had a passion fruit spritz. I tasted it and appreciated the abundant fresh passion fruit. I really enjoyed the Cote de Rhone with my dinner. All throughout, the service was excellent. We were always checked upon, but never rushed. Even when we requested our leftovers to go, they held the bag in the kitchen, and gave it to us when we were ready to leave. All in all, this restaurant had great ambiance, excellent service, and delicious food. Make a reservation... if not, you will miss out!

The staff accommodated us at the bar with two seats after someone kindly scooted over. Food:The salmon was genuinely delicious - perfectly crispy skin, juicy flavorful tomatoes, and great execution overall. My date enjoyed her salad as well. For dessert, we both had the crème brûlée, which was good but smaller than expected and caramelized almost all the way through, leaving less of the creamy custard I was hoping for. The decaf coffee was excellent. My main complaint is portion size - I left still feeling a bit hungry after a $100+ meal (salmon, salad, two desserts, drinks). Service: The bartender was respectful and patient, clearly trying not to interrupt our conversation. However, this went a bit too far - I had to flag him down each time we needed something, which slowed our meal considerably when I was focused on my date. Atmosphere: Cozy and intimate with a living room vibe that actually worked well for a first date. The downside? It was uncomfortably warm despite the rainy evening outside, and the space is tight enough that you can hear neighboring conversations clearly. Value: At $100 for two people (no alcohol, one salad), it's priced at a premium level. While the food quality was there, the service and portions didn't quite match the price point for me. Would I return? Probably not - there are other restaurants in this price range that deliver more complete experiences. That said, if you don't mind the cost and value intimate ambiance over attentive service, it might work for you.

I started with the prosecco and moved on to the Sangiovese which complimented my pappardelle perfectly. My friend ordered the grilled salmon and had the Montepulciano Abate Pietro. The delivery of their fresh bread with garlicky pesto, and another with tomato, which I think was a focaccia. Just amazing. We asked for olive oil to compliment the bread: it was the very best of quality with a dark Sicilian olive green hue and the smoothness with the polyphenols and antioxidants dancing in my mouth. Yum! I asked for a side of Parmigiano and they brought a nice square ramekin full of finely grated cheese, Perfection!! These are the details that make me fall in love with a restaurant, causing me to return again and again. Both of our entrees were executed perfectly, the vegetables were grilled leaving a slight char, and the salmon was grilled just right leaving a tender center. My pappardelle was dressed in the deepest, richest mushroom + beef cheek fusion of flavors with whispers of some kind of red wine like maybe the Nero d'Avola that they feature on the menu. WoW!! This is a dish that you want to take your time savoring. Every bite surpassed the last, and then a sip of the Sangiovese and I was in fresh pasta heaven. Just when we were winding down and reeling from being overwhelmed by the amazing food, Angela came to our table with cannoli. It too was amazing! This was such a kind and unexpected gesture from the chef/owner. Grazie mille, a domani!

A little outdoor seating, a bar top area, and a comfortable indoor area that is very inviting, were a surprise as I approached the location. The food is elegant, is presented amazing, and tastes great. I started with the Sweet Corn and Piñon Soup. I see why it was voted best soup for two years in a row. The thinly sliced corn bread adds an amazing texture in those bites. I had the Apricot salad (sorry I did not note the name and the menu was updated so it is not in any of the pictures) was fresh, crisp, and refreshing. I finished the evening with a Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta with sugared dark cherry was very pleasing. I almost forgot the focaccia bread.. made daily, served warm and soft. A must have. The server had a couple of hiccups with an incorrect food order and totally separate billing issue (which by their reaction I would assume was an off night) but other food delivery staff and bussing staff were timely and professional. I would recommend reservations. I was able to secure a seat (due to showing for dinner around 4 pm or so), but the restaurant filled up nicely and hosted about 4 anniversary's and 1 birthday in my time there. Dress attire seemed casual but there is definitely a more elevated clientele so I would recommend a thoughtful outfit for the experience.
