The one fun thing about working in SOMA is that everyone else works there too, and they all want to rendezvous for lunch. So today I met up here with none other than Pirate T and soaked up some of her wisdom on city life, suburban life, and life with kids (which strikes terror into the hearts of carefree, happy-go-yelpy youths like me). But hey, if she still can still score a few Yelpable outings every week, maybe there's some hope after all. As for Caffe Centro itself, while it doesn't have the neat Parisian ambience of Butler & Chef, it's still a 5-star experience in its own right if you can grab a tiny outside table on a nice sunny day. I had a chai and a hot veggie sandwich, which was just the thing for a light sidewalk lunch. If you only come to SOMA occasionally, South Park may seem like a mere anomaly, but if you're here everyday, it's a life-saving oasis of peaceful, lush greenery in the middle of the industrial madness. Great place right across from the park. When its nice weather choose a table outside. Had a bowl of the soup of the day- pretty tiny cup but it actually was perfect because I got the pasta primavera salad and that thing was HUGE and delicious. Overall I'm quite pleased with Caffe Centro. Great sandwiches, especially when warmed up in the panini press. I always get the Grilled Chicken sandwich and am always very happy. The desserts are not as great as their prices are high, but I always get one so I can reach the $10 minimum to use a credit card - minus one star for that. I'm also disappointed that the sandwiches don't come with any side dishes, not even some leafy greens, and they often run out of soup, so there's not much to adorn your sandwich. The biggest perk of Caffe Centro is the neighboring South Park, which has plenty of nice park benches to eat at. So overall, the sandwiches and nearby park are definitely 4 star, but the lack of side dishes, good desserts, or credit card acceptance drop it to 3 stars. read more

My coworkers seem to bigger fans of Caffe Centro than me, whether it's out of convenience, or otherwise. Personally I find the food here alright, with them weighing in around 2.5 stars for me - there are certainly tastier options in the area (albeit not many). The last time I was here with them, I picked up a pasta portofino salad for a little under $10 after tax. And while it was okay, and the serving size was massive, the salad itself was a bit bland, and the ingredients were not particularly fresh, as I noticed some slightly yellowing/browning greens in my dish. I remember their sandwiches being alright too, having been brought one at work before. For those that do choose to come here though, make sure you drop in before 12:30, as that seems to be when the huge lunch rush comes in. read more

I love this place, is my goto for a quick sandwich, but I have not been too impressed about the salads and dining in for the price. Do you like a nice tuna or BLT? Out of all the lunch options, I liked the caprese sandwich and nicoise salad the best. The coffee is only okay. I would prefer Starbucks and certainly Blue Bottle, but this place probably has the best coffee in South Park (if you're willing to walk a few blocks, there are some better more options). I LOVE THIS PLACE!! By far one of my favorites to walk to from work to try to snag a table outside and enjoy the sun and people watch those in the park. I just started working a few blocks away and a lot of coworkers told me it was a great place to grab a salad or sandwich for take out or even to eat in. So on my third week of work I finally made it here for a salad. I decided on the spinach salad and added chicken. What I ended up with was a ton of spinach, a little goat cheese, a few pine nuts and some orange slices and very strange chicken in texture that didn't seem to be freshly grilled and was a tiny portion at that. I come here regularly for coffee just because there's always a line at the coffee machine at the office and in and out, it seems to be pretty fast here. $2 gets you a large cup of coffee and pastries are about $2-$3 each. Pastry wise, i've gotten a cinnamon roll, and a cut of coffee cake. The cinnamon roll was a bit dry, but the coffee cake was not disappointing. Lots of crumble, and I'm a huge fan. I've been here for lunch before and man, expect to be waiting for a while. There are always huge lines here around lunch. A bummer to see this spot in decline, but it's just not as good as before, and the cashier isn't too helpful either. Their kale salad has about 50 cents worth of kale, some white-bread focaccia that would make an Italian cry, a bit of tomato and some avo, with like 7 pine nuts and mild crumbled goat cheese, all for over $13 inclusive of tax/health/tip. The salad was also underdressed. I think the entire dish, minus the bread which you probably won't eat, has about 180 calories. I'm still starving. I saw that MealPal has this place in their lunch offering, so I figured I could try something else here for much cheaper, on the plan. But MealPal won't list what you can get here until you give a credit card and select a payment plan-- I'm not going to do that. So I ask the cashier, what can you get with MealPal? He was clueless. "Go to the site." I explained the site was unclear and I then asked what they gave MealPal folks that day. The cashier just blew off my request with I don't know, go to the site, it's not my area, etc. It's such a simple question, it's like dude, you work her, you are the manager, you handle all the money, what do they friggin' give MealPal people? Finally, we solve the problem by going to the side window where there are bunch of kale salads just sitting out, probably for hours because now it's well past 2:30pm, waiting for their MealPal pickup. I think this place is a brunch place, which seems to have gotten all the good reviews. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to try brunch here, since I came here on a Wednesday evening around 6:30PM and only got one salad. I came in because I was CRAVING avocado toast, and I read great reviews about the avocado toast in this place. They said they wouldn't make it because it's technically a "breakfast" item (I personally don't get it...if you have a slice of bread, some avocado, & the egg, why can't you just make it? lol). I was already there so I decided to get a cobb salad. The salad was super mediocre. For $10, the portion was pretty small, and there definitely wasn't enough lettuce for the dressing. They put a ton of dressing on there, so I would recommend getting it on the side. There was a lot of salty bacon, and some tomatoes as well. I would expect this salad to be from one of those build-your-own salad places, not a fancy cafe for $10. Would definitely not come back for the salad, but may want to return to actually try the avocado toast. read more
