Reasonably priced vegan/vegetarian food served with a smile. Order at the counter, food brought to your table, bus your own table. Good, Healthy, and vegetarian/vegan. Rare for a fast food place the employees actually appeared to be having fun, at a minimum putting on a very convincing act. The food was enjoyed. I had the Chipotle Chile which was surprisingly nicely seasoned...adding hot sauce would have overwhelmed the dish. Partner had Edamame bowl which was also well flavored. horrible!! a MINIMUM of $11 for a vegetarian, snack sized, bowl of beans and rice with sauce, tomatoes, and 1/8 of an avocado. inflation is not an excuse, this place goes against every fiber of logic. idk how they're still in business, this place should've died when the baseline price of a bowl exceeded $6. all the customers take it out on the staff who are just there to have a job. be nicer to them it's not their fault that this company sucks so bad!!! read more

This is kinda hard to review!!! One thing though... CARNIVORES STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!! lol. I considered myself an "omnivore" so I was pretty excited reading all the reviews (lot more reviews on the other location, but I went to this one near campus) and decided to drag my bf to try it. I got the "original yumm bowl" small. It's a a bowl of brown rice with chopped tomatoes, beans, avocado, lettuce and sprinkled with the "yumm original" sauce... which taste like a combo of peanut sauce and mustard. It has a very interesting flavor. Geez I felt so healthy eating that little bowl!!! lol...The taste was ok...not great.. (maybe I was searching for meat??!! lol). I also ordered the "tempe" skewer. I'm from Indonesia and we eat tempe all the time...so I thought I gave it a try.. but YUCCCCKK!!!!... They basically marinade the tempe with lots of salty stuff and then pour supermarket brand teriyaki sauce on it. The teriyaki sauce was salty and the tempe was already salted by the marinade..so it was too much salt!!! sorry... this doesn't pass my "tempe master" inspection!!! My bf ordered the "bento" which came with jasmine rice, some kind of lightly dressed coleslaw, and a chicken skewer. There was not much on the plate for the price (I think it was 8.95?). The chicken skewer tasted slightly better than the tempe except the chicken was not too salty..but the teriyaki sauce was extremely salty. My bf ordered a bottled drink and our tab for my tiny bowl of yumm bowl, tempe skewer, bento and drink was about $18 yike!!! We thought it was an "ok" lunch... but we might not go back there again... too vegetarian for us maybe..lol!!! but overall a very interesting experience of course. read more

There's something about their Yumm saucesauce that I always have a craving for, they have a variety of options of bowls to choose from, but to me everything taste better wrapped in a tortilla. I really enjoy a wrap it on wheat yumm baby style, the avocado is so refreshing and unless I need extra protein I don't need a bowl with beans in it. For my friends and family that have gluten free allergies, there's usually always something they can find here. read more

I love Cafe Yum it definitely is a acquired taste, but it is so good I had to start buying their Yum sauce from our local market. They have a variety of ways you can make your bowls and it's a good choice for a vegan substitute. Plus the place is always clean. Definitely a good place to go to if you want fresh food at a good price. read more

Cafe Yumm has always been a favorite of mine as a student at UO. The yumm bowl is a nourishing quick bite, perfect for lunch in between classes or during a study session. The Hot N'Jazzy is my go to because I love spicy foods, and pairing it with teriyaki tofu adds a sweet and savory twist. Vegan heaven! Order the BBQ tofu skewers you will thank me later delicous meaty texture and sauce with no animals harmed. I loved how vegan friendly this place is, we were handed a taster of beans, white rice, and their original yum sauce when we came in and loved it! (Also I tried the cauliflower rice and it was just as good if not better!) I highly recommend the vegan ginger cookie also it was so soft and chewy and came warm and fresh tasting. I also loved the local Oregon kombucha they had in the front in several different flavors. Better yet, over 50% of the menu is organic! That's amazing for a food chain to achieve. read more

I want so badly to like this place. But I just don't get it. Here's why: -Prices seem unusually high for the nature of the food. Rice and beans is what I cook for myself when I'm trying to save money, and forking over $10-$12 seems weird. (Although I admire their profit margins?) -Today I tried the tempeh reuben and it wasn't great. It was dripping with oil--so much that the bread was soggy--and the tempeh itself was so undersalted and underseasoned that I had to pour extra sauce on it to make it taste like something. Chefs should consider soaking the tempeh in a marinade before cooking, and go easy on the oil when toasting the sandwich. -Why do they serve plain tortilla chips with everything? Is it just me, or are plain tortilla chips without salsa a bit of a bummer? Is there a large demographic that eats these by themselves, and I'm just the exception? -With the tiny tub of sauce that cost me an extra dollar, my total came to almost $14 for my grease sandwich. It's a shame because I'm basically the target demographic: a relatively health-conscious vegetarian who loves rice and beans, working on campus, in need of lunch sometimes. But alas, not sure I'll go here that often. read more

I just left this Cafe Yum shaken. I have never been treated so poorly in 30 years of eating out. I placed an online order and went in and my food was ready and visibly in front of me. The HORRIBLY RUDE worker who later identified herself as "Molly" was on the phone for a few minutes when I politely suggested that the burrito might be my take out. She immediately waved me off and rolled her eyes, then told the person on the phone, loud enough for everyone in the store to hear, "Sorry, there is an extremely rude and impatient man here." She then came out and literally threw the the bag on the counter and again called me impatient to my face. I took the bag and then returned it because it wasn't mine (sucks for whoever's order that was). She said "OH THAT WASN'T YOUR ORDER?!" I replied "No, mine is the burrito behind you." She threw it in a bag, then threw it onto the counter (albeit, not as hard as the first bag). At this point I started to leave before asking her name. As a first timer to Cafe Yumm, it was very interesting. My friends told me that the second time is a lot better. But here was my first time experience. We got there around 6:30 PM and it was not very busy. I came in hungry and i left hungry. There are lots of different types of Yumm bowls that you can get and they come in small, medium, and large. The small is really small, like perfect for a 5 year old small or a snack. The medium is a little bigger than the small. The large looks like it could be a medium sized, or at least that's what i thought when i saw my friends. I got the Yumm Bento with the chicken skewer, jasmine rice, and Asian Slaw. I thought the teriyaki sauce was pretty good with the rice. For about 9 bucks with a soda, it wasn't very much food. I thought it was going to be a lot more food that it was. I was hungry again about 2 hours after i ate. My friend got the original yumm bowls, because some of them are vegetarians or just like the bowl. They have their really good special sauce that you can buy. There are lots of them especially in Eugene because i have never heard of it before i got here. I want to go back so it tastes better. Also i think this is the first healthy place i have eaten since i have been in Eugene. read more

Being from California this place stole my heart with their yumm sauce. Thank god for online ordering! Delicious well balanced meals at an affordable price. We love their simple but flavorful menu. Our friend who lives locally even surprised us with Home made yumbowls before we left and I picked up a bottle of yum sauce at PDX (at no additional charge compared to outside of the airport). The sauce I really the secret to a perfect meal. I've used sauce on chicken, with pita chips, kabobs, bowls and salads. read more

Yumm isn't my favorite place in Eugene, but I eat there often, and here's why: 1. The food is tasty and fresh and seems more nutritious than other quick-food options. I'm an unashamed carnivore and I sometimes wish Yumm offered additional protein options, but the beans and chicken are solid. And you can always slaughter your cow at another place. 2. The staff have always been nice to me, but then I don't write 'vomit reviews' like others who have posted on Yumm. Can't really imagine those experiences. 3. Today, I was ordering Yumm bowls to go for friends. While waiting for my food to be prepared a guy who might have been homeless came in and went to use the bathroom. A few minutes later he was walking quietly toward the door when the order person handed him a bag and said quietly, "Hi. Someone ordered this but didn't come in to pick it up. Go for it!" And the guy looked kind of stunned, and then smiled and continued out the door holding that bag of food and maybe thinking the world isn't quite such a nasty place. Well, being new to the area, I just want to say I am IN LOVE with this place! I heard about it for years online from friends in the area, and finally, I got to eat my first Yumm bowl. The sauce- that is where the magic is. Anyone can throw the basics into a bowl, but add that sauce, and it launches these prosaic ingredients into a whole new level of deliciousness. Overpriced? Not really, but I am used to San Francisco prices. Your mileage may vary. The BBQ tofu skewer was delicious, but the tempeh- OH, MY. Wonderful! Great texture, definitely made from soybeans, and dense without being brick-like. Best tempeh I've ever had. The teriyaki sauce is pretty good too. The SOUPS!! African Groundnut- I want to take a bath in it, it's that good. Moroccan Chickpea- delicious, rich, and spicy with a hint of sweetness. Chipotle Chili- pretty good. I'm not a chili eater, but it was very flavorful and spicy. Ginger-Garlic veggie burger- really good. I don't like veg patties that are mushroom-based, and this one is not (or it's so minor an ingredient that I can't taste them- which is GOOD). This was really, really good. I just ate the patty, as I'm trying to avoid bread, and the chips were stale. Ginger cookie dipped in chocolate- really great, and I would never know it was vegan. Well done! Seriously, what is with the city of Eugene and these relatively new chain restaurant concepts that seem to always be worth coming back for? There are a few of these vegetarian restaurants, but the one we visited is near campus and literally a five minute walk from our department building. When visiting, always check what soups are available because the selection changes quite often and is usually diverse enough to appeal to everyone within the group. When cousins or siblings come down, this is the restaurant that seems to be on the request list first since the dishes they serve are so fresh that it is probably quite refreshing to stomach after a four hour drive from Seattle. As a personal habit, we typically order the large Jazzy bowl or the Smoky bowl. The large Jazz bowl consists of jasmine rice with their house sauce, which can be bought at the restaurant, as well as red beans and salsa though if you would like a little more heat in your dish you can ask for the Jalapeno-Sesame salsa that would basically make it a Hot Jazzy bowl which is also on the menu. For a bit less heat, and a personal favorite, the Smoky bowl is brown rice with their house sauce as well as chili and salsa. Unless we are in the mood to splurge, we often skip the specialties as it is already relative pricey to dine here on a regular basis, especially for a college student. Definitely worth trying if you have not gone and this is sound advice from a relatively carnivorous diner. read more

Wow. I can't believe they're getting away with this! $5.75 for a "medium" bowl of poorly cooked rice, a bit of canned corn and olives, and 3 very thinly sliced pieces of avocado? Here's my advice: 1. Save $75 or so, buy a large size of their Yumm sauce, a bag of rice, 2-3 cans of your favorite veggies (beans, corn, olives), some salsa, and a fresh tomato/avocado once in awhile and you can make this in your dorms/homes at will. 2. If you're in a pinch, walk approximately one block further toward downtown, cross the street and eat lunch at cafe arirang. You'll pay $1 more, but you will be served more food than you may be able to eat in a single sitting AND it will be actual food, touched by human hands. Now don't get me wrong, I used to be a big fan of the Yumm. However, it had been a few years (3 maybe?) since I'd been back. Wow. New location = poorer service and ingredient. I ordered my old fave today, the Chilean Zucchini Yumm, and found 2 1/2 (yes, I counted) quarter moon slices of zucchini. Geez out. Tables weren't wiped, counter staff seemed manic, all that and it wasn't even busy. Guess I was the last to know. And, if you're still reading, you may be interested that all this "quality food" takes place under the guise of their "triple bottom line," which is: equal emphasis on social, environmental and economic goals. Hmmm....way to jump on the bandwagon as you franchise, folks. Sorry, but this is yet another example of carbonated environmentalism. I ain't buying it. read more

I resisted Cafe Yumm for the longest time because it typically gets chatted up by either a) My vegetarian/vegan buddies or b) People I know who are dieting. I have a rule of thumb that I don't weigh these opinions too heavily... cause... I mean... They don't have very many options to begin with and so MOST places where they get the illusion of variety, these groups will probably rave about. (Kill me for generalizing) I stopped in on the way home from work and stared blanky at the board for a good 5 minutes. Just too many adjectives and nouns. I mean, when I hear "rice bowl" that's sort of what I am expecting, I don't want to worry about if the tomatoes will be too much with the salsa or the tofu/pepper ratio. There is a reason simplicity works well. The gal behind the counter must have been able to sense my pondering and offered me mini yum bowl. My suspicions were correct-- just too many toppings, the rice and beans were only an afterthought to the cheese and sauce and what-have-you. I also got to experience the yum sauce in this moment, I don't know how to describe it. The board called it savory but it was tangy and acidic, I didn't enjoy it, and was thankful for the sample. Too invested now to go somewhere else, I picked the soup/salad/bread for a whopping $8, which in college land is a hefty sum. It wasn't until I got home that I realized they didn't give me the bread, to my disappointment. The salad was mostly shredded carrots and the balsamic vinegar was mostly oil. Honestly, I didn't finish it. As for the chili, it was alright. I will note here though, that if you dump enough cumin on anything I will probably eat it. Was it all worth $8? (two fancy coffee drinks? a large take out pizza at domino's? 80 packets of top roman? 8 boxes of red beans and rice? -- only to put things in college perspective) Probably not. Now with all the vinegar and spice rolling around in my stomach, my acid reflex thinks it is having a bad trip to Pink Floyd at a laser light show. Cafe Yumm exploded in popularity after their initial run as a small operation in the 5th St. Public Market. Its "yumm sauce" practically has a cult following among many of my friends- vegetarian/vegan and omnivores alike. I just can't hop on board. I love what Cafe Yumm is doing for the local community and the environment, I just don't much care for their food. I seem to be allergic to the Yumm sauce (tried a friend's once), and without it (apparently) the rice bowls are just ... rice bowls. I paid an extra $2 for 4 oz (maybe) of roasted chicken on a $6 medium bowl and was still hungry. For an $8 lunch I expect to be stuffed and slinging leftovers- especially on rice and veg. Fountain drinks/tea were about $2 for a 16 oz cup. I felt like I was paying mostly for ambiance. I was frustrated as a first-time Yumm customer that there were no clear ordering directions. It looks like a sit-down restaurant, but on closer examination they want customers to order at the counter, seat themselves, and then bus their own tables. There's no "Order Here" sign in evidence, or anything to make it clear. We were also instructed to order at the end of the counter facing away from the menu board, which might've been great if we had a clue what was going on with the menu, but we still needed to look it over. The order-taker was frustrated with us and stalked over to get us paper menus to look at while she stood in front of us at the register. Why is that more efficient? I was further frustrated that our order taker was not knowledgeable, and even tried to b.s. her way through questions on menu items. I have allergies, I *have* to know what's in my food. If it's "salsa," chances are it has onions, garlic, or both. Don't guess and tell me it's "just tomatoes" and get pissed when I ask you to double-check. If it's "just tomatoes," it's not typically called "salsa." Something else PLUS tomatoes equals "salsa." Seriously- for a restaurant that specializes in people with dietary restrictions or needs like vegans/vegetarians, why are questions on menu items THAT unexpected or frustrating? The order taker wasn't rude, just flustered and definitely seemed put-upon to check up on ingredients. What could make it better: clear ingredients listing, fresh (not canned) ingredients, maybe a make-your-own-Yumm-bowl bar? read more

This is my favorite Cafe Yumm. But only for mostly trivial reasons like: A.) It's the newest and thus the best (for now at least) B.) It's closest to campus C.) It has a conference room, just in case my broke ass ever wants to have meeting for some dumb reason. D.) It's bigger than the other Cafe Yumms around town and everyone knows that bigger is better. If you happen to be a Cafe Yumm virgin, you should know that they specialize in tasty, quick and healthy grub. What they're really known for is their Yumm Sauce, an unattractive looking glop that tastes like garlic and tahini heaven. It's so good and addicting, in fact, that one of my classmates once dubbed it "crack sauce" and the whole class nodded in agreement. The sauce is featured in their Yumm Bowls, which are bowls of different varieties of rice and beans topped with goodies like salsa and avocado. My favorite order is a large smoky yumm bowl with a few liberal squirts of sriracha added on top for good measure. If you find yourself at Cafe Yumm for the first time, you must order a Yumm Bowl for the proper experience. For those of us who try to save a buck or two by purchasing Yumm Sauce at the grocery store and making our bowls at home, I can recommend this place because they sell giant liter bottles of the original sauce for around $12. These bottles will last way longer than the smaller jars and ends up being much cheaper in the long run! read more

My nephew, who's three, loves this place. I'd never been, so for his birthday I went to get take-out for all of us and surprise him. (He did say "yumm," lol.) Service at this location was good, and the restaurant was clean (I went at 11:40 am). I ordered three large Original Yumm bowls because my sister said two would feed her, her husband, and the 3 year old. I figured one more would take care of my daughter (also 3) and myself. Hmm. At $6.75 it was kind of pricey. My daughter didn't like it at all...she wasn't a fan of everything mixed together and sauce covering everything. I thought the sauce was decent, but mayo-y, almost. I added chicken for $2 more to ours, and ended up eating my portion and my daughter's, and I was still hungry, $9 later! (I am 124 lbs and in good shape...not usually a heavy eater.) I think Cafe Yumm is a good healthy option for fast food. It's a little expensive, and I seriously doubt it would be economical for my husband to eat a full meal there. For a fast food restaurant, this place is pretty good and healthy. There are a variety of different bowls and toppings to choose from and it's all very customizable. DON'T order the tofu though! I ordered the teriyaki tofu bowl and the tofu was too chewy and way over fried. I smushed my fork with one and it oozed oil. That was enough for me to pick the tofu off and order a side of beans to mix into my bowl instead. Also, the Yumm sauce isn't that good. Why is it so popular? This is a good place for quick, healthy food that isn't consigned to a bun. On our first trek, I had the basic yumm bowl, and my partner in crime had the chicken skewer and some soup. The skewer and soup were both really good -- nice and fresh and well done. I wasn't impressed with the yumm bowl, however. Too much stuff competing for flavor, the combination of which yields an odd taste and an odd texture. It was filling, but I didn't find myself saying "yumm". read more
