Today I experienced the worst customer ever from the manager Cafe Stella (Ghent location). After being approached "brashly" that to have a table at this business, you must purchase something, my friend and I approached the counter to order. Only to be met with animosity in tone and approach. I was told that I "rolled my neck" with attitude (untrue) and that I should take my business to a competitor because "I don't have time to deal with this", all because I told the manager I did not appreciate the way he approached us. I stood up for myself and was met with the rudest display of human disregard. All in all, I purchased a peach iced tea, which was placed on a counter forcibly, and was told, "We don't even need your money here." I asked for his tone to be corrected, and then he proceeded to "ignore me" and say I'm not going to deal with you. His co-worker, multiple times under his breath, told his manager, "Just drop it and leave it alone." When I asked them to please assist, I was told, " I wanna stay out of this." At the end of the day, while we did not purchase something immediately, we "were" frequent customers at this establishment. But after today, why should ANYONE go there? This coded, aggressive behavior makes it hard for folks to be civil and peaceful. My tone never raised. I wasn't belligerent. But I was talked to and treated like I was "nothing". NOTHING. And that is not acceptable. Might I add my friend and I were meeting for a business gathering and were only there for roughly 15 minutes. I received a very hot tea(hot enough to cause 2nd degree almost 3rd degree burns on 60% of my thighs) with a lid that did not fit and no grip on the cup to hold the hot cup well. The owner was unwilling to help with any of my emergency room bills, and treated me rudely then just ignored me. At least have some compassion if anything. Felt thrown aside and now I have permanent scarring on my legs. It's not even the money at that point just be a good human being. Never going back and I don't recommend it. read more

Love the vibes here! Every time I've come here there are people just chillin, drinking coffee and on their laptops. Like a way more laid back Starbucks in a way. It's got a really cool aesthetic inside that keeps your eyes wandering around. There's also a place outside that you can sit and eat at as well, or smoke a cigarette if you're into that. The menu is written on this huuuuuuge blackboard behind the register and the people who work there are super nice and don't make you feel stupid for not really knowing what exactly it is you'd like to order. Ambiance was great! Food was really good. I loved the Turkey club I got. The chips they were served with had great flavor. Chai latte, dirty chai and two different iced teas were very disappointing...the reason for three stars instead of 5. They lacked flavor and sweetener. Cafe Stella. What can I say? Surprisingly it has already been years since I have been coming here and it truly has been a home away from home. What has prompted me to write this review is casually overhearing that one of the phenomenal workers there - Casey - is departing very shortly. I haven't been able to think of a synonym besides 'phenomenal' to better describe her and the other staff members. I've been all across this country and the customer service, attention to detail, kindness, and overall work ethic they display is truly top notch. No matter how early in the morning, late at night, or busy - they maintain the same level of excellence. I've always said that people who have even a slightly negative experience are quick to write bad reviews or ask for management, but someone who loves an establishment may go there for years and never even put money in the tip jar... I almost let someone leave who works at one of my favorite places go without "putting money in the tip jar". I can't speak for everyone else who goes here (although I think I can speak for most!), but I've also been saying for a very long time now that this place is one of my top 3 that I will sorely miss whenever I leave this area. What can I say that has not been said. I'm an older lady (48) and truth be told, I used to be too scared to try Stella's. I couldn't go into Stella's because I wasn't a hipster. I happen to resemble a Nickelodeon mom type. But thank goodness someone made me go in with them. It wasn't hipster it was ....just ....Stella's. I fell in love with the place immediately. I found out the folks in Stella's don't care about types. They are super chill and accepting. Hanging out there, well, it kinda makes me feel cool. But that's because I'm a nerd that way. So, don't let the Ghent location give you pause if you are a super nerd like myself. I love the eclectic decor and the umbrella shaded patio is great for people watching , enjoying a cup of coffee or even a glass of wine. The menu for food is rather expansive. It is all (what I've tried so far (the grit bowl is my fave)) very good. Stellas sells the beans they roast and the can of coffee beans can be refilled. When you bring it back they give a dollar discount on the refill. That's cool! You should go hang out. All of the people you meet at Stella's are unique. You gotta just go spend an hour or two. Cafe Stella, you're adorable! I'm only reviewing on a recent take out order - wish I had stayed! Great selection of flavored syrups and the coffee they use tastes really good. From the outside, it doesn't seem very big, but once you walk through the front doors, you're met with seating everywhere and lots of people with their laptops (just an observation!) Such a fun cafe right in Norfolk! Cool vibe in the whole shop with fun window seat spots perfect for people watching and working or even just reading while enjoying a cup of coffee or a latte. My daughter and I came in on a Saturday afternoon. What a spectacular space this is! High ceilings, lots of natural lighting, spacious seating and oh that wonderful coffee smell that permeates the air! They weren't busy at all. We were able to go straight to the front and order. To bad I wasn't hungry at the time, or I would have ordered something from their menu board. (Everything looked delicious!) I opted instead for a coconut almond iced latte. I am a straight shooter when it comes to food and reviews. I WANT to say it was delish...however it didn't really impress me much. I tasted a slight hint of coconut and almond. The coffee was good enough but very weak. The lady behind the counter that took my order and made the drink was not as chipper or friendly as I would have liked. It somehow did not match the ambience of the shop. I'm sorry but I'm used to baristas and workers at coffee shops being very friendly (from what I thought was from the coffee they make).. Great see every time. Had the lox bagel breakfast sandwich each time. I am used to a more toasted and cream cheeses bagel. I guess I have to make a note each time I order it, maybe it's their style??? Each time was vaguely cream cheesed so I was kind of disappointed, I am used to cream cheese on both sides of the bagel and all toppings evenly placed as it's a sandwich so each bite should be delicious of all flavors. I visit Cafe Stella 5+ times every month. I live about 20 minutes away, but it's 100% worth the drive. Their espresso drinks are the best in Norfolk - dare I say, best in Hampton Roads. My go to drink is just an ordinary single shot hot latte, but I also love their juices (like the red betty), their mochas (when my mom visited she downed 2 iced mochas in our visit), and all of their food is delicious. I love supporting small businesses, especially Filipino owned. Upon entering Cafe Stella, it sets you up for a warm and welcoming ambiance. My friends are regulars at this cafe and were very excited to take us here for the first time and expressed their positive experiences. Unfortunately, for my other friends and I it was not the case. We entered the cafe and noticed the hustle and bustle of a Tuesday night during the middle of finals week. Adults and college students hunched over their laptops and others spending time with friends and loved ones. My friends and I set our stuff down to get settled as not many spots were opened. Some of us went to use the restroom and came back. As soon as we sat down the owner came up to us and said in a condescending tone, "Can I take your order?" and we were silent as we had just sat down & had not looked at the menu yet. We had every intention of ordering, but it had not even been five minutes yet. She then proceeded with "This is for paying customers only, especially because we are so crowded tonight." We took offense to this as we had just sat down & she just assumed we were there to loiter. It is such a shame to be treated that way when all we wanted was to provide business to what we thought was a cozy cafe. The vibes are immaculate if you enjoy sitting at coffee shops and getting lost in your work or a book. So far, I've had an iced mocha and a cappuccino. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. As for lunch items, I've tried the burger - which is most definitely homemade as it is a thick ground beef patty. The decor is nice and funky, without being wild and overstimulating. They serve up a great cup of coffee, and they have a really great selection of teas. I had one of the best green teas of my life one evening in Cafe Stella, I believe it was nicknamed the popcorn tea: earthy, unusual, savory, warming and delicious. Also they have glass displays full of beautiful homemade treats to go with your hot drinks. We lived just down the road from Cafe Stella for a while, and I used to love our visits. I'm back! I know that my frequency at Stella's has fallen off a bit and the why is reflected in a previous preview. Make no mistake that I'm a fan of their coffee and happy to see improvements on National Coffee Day. The patio was clear of most debris, an issue I've had in the past with cigarette butts and trash has been rectified. The side walk was clear of trash. The door no longer sticks. My visit was mid morning on a weekday so no line thankfully. However, they were still very busy. The dining room tables not in use were clean. However, some display areas in the rear dusty. I utilized the restroom prior to ordering and found it had all the proper supplies, but the surrounding stool was in need of a good cleaning. No debris on the floor. I also ran into Stella and visited for a little bit. She is a very sweet hard working woman that I respect. Friendly barista's, especially David who went above expectations to provide superior service. I will explain later. My white chocolate mocha was spot on tasty and remained warm through my breakfast. I discussed breakfast options with the staff and came up with a newer item on the menu. The buttermilk waffle sandwich served w/ syrup on the side was scrumptious. It comes with bacon, fried egg & cheddar. I felt it did not have enough syrup however. The breakfast meal came out in about 15 minutes, no napkin delivered with the silverware. My small sign was on the table, however she passed me and I had to call her over. There is help yourself items at the side bar area where I found the napkins. Just my opinion a napkin should be delivered with every meal. When handing off the plate the woman attempted to put the fork and knife on the plate almost breaking the egg yolk. Proper procedure is to put the silverware on the table. A friend met up with me and asked that I order whatever I like in advance of their arrival. David prepared one of his favorites, an eye-opener. He held off fixing it until just the right moment before my friend arrived so he could enjoy a hot cup. My friend said it was delicious. David then came out behind the bar later to check and see how it was. That was impressive! All in all a good visit and I'm happy to provide an upgrade today. Great coffee and a yum breakfast. Out door seating on a nice early spring day before the rains hit is a great way to start off my day. And while I think of this place as my go to breakfast/coffee for many others it is a place to enjoy lunches, teas and/or entree choices with wine or beer. What ever you are in the mood for this place welcomes all those with palates for great bite, eats, and get up and go drinks to mellow out and chill drinks. All this and the smiles from the helpers behind the counter make me always feel welcome. The cafe decor is as eclectic as are the patrons.
