We were excited to try this place out, as we had heard great things from friends. We called ahead to get our name in the list, which worked out well as we were seated quickly. Our server was Drew. He was quite friendly and cordial and promptly took our order and returned with our drinks and chips/salsa. ...And then he vanished like Harry Houdini in the Bermuda Triangle. Seriously. I was waiting for a lone tumbleweed to dramatically roll across the floor as a dog barked off in the distance. We were in a fun, loud restaurant...and in a ghost town all at the same time. We waited over 30 minutes for our meals to arrive, and they were actually brought to us by somebody else. Not once were we given an update or explanation on why our food was taking so long. We actually started laughing thinking that they had completely forgotten about us. Oddly enough, our original server resurfaced when it was time to bring us our check. The food was actually quite good. We enjoyed the hot salsa. The pollo Durango had a deliciously creamy tomatillo sauce. The food was an easy 4 stars, but the service was 2 stars at best, hence the 3 star rating. We'll come again and hope for more great food paired with better service. read more

The atmosphere was nice, there was Mexican music playing, the patio was open, and the staff were all very attentive. We were given two salsas with chips before ordering, one was mild and the other had a bit of spice, but I would not call it spicy. Both were good. The chips were average, not the light and thin type. We ordered two entrées, one combination with a chile relleno and an enchilada that came with rice, refried beans, flour, yes, flour tortillas, and a small salad. The other entrée was chicken with molé, black beans, Spanish rice, a small salad, and fried plantains. The overall review is as follows: The chili relleno was good, it had a kick, good flavor, and wasn't drowning in sauces or other ingredients. The chicken was tender. The molé was thin and lacked the rich flavor I have come to love having eaten molé for decades. The rice lacked flavor. It was you average "Look, we have Spanish rice because it's orange!" rice. The black beans were good. The fried plantains were good and what I hoped they would be. Therefore, I have to give this place a three star rating. As you'll see on my first review, I was turned off by the way the girl who answered the phone treated me. I posted my review and said I'd update after we had our scheduled dinner here- and right after I posted my review the owner messaged me to resolve the issue. He identified they needed staff training and then really ensured we got star treatment when we took my father and mother-in-law here for a celebratory dinner last night. I appreciate that he didn't just throw free food at us but recognized the issue to resolve it. I will support business owners who take constructive feedback and use it to improve their customer experience. When we arrived they led us right to our table and gave us a free app on the house for our trouble- we had the chips and guac which was delicious, and their salsas have really great flavor and the thinner more authentic consistency we like. The spicy one has a great smoked chipotle flavor and is not too hot. Our server was great, she had a great attitude and was accurate with our order. Most of us ordered the fajitas, which have a really unique tomato-based sauce that is just delicious, different from other fajita sauces but a really delicious spin on a classic. I am a southern CA transplant so complimenting a Utah Mexican restaurant means something from me after leaving the land of amazing authentic Mexican food to go to Utah where you're hard-pressed to find good Mexican food at all. My husband had a tomatillo cream sauce chicken meal that he liked a lot. The atmosphere was laid back and fun, and they even gave us a free fried ice cream dessert making our night celebratory as we'd intended. The only thing is that you'll have to wait if you go on a weekend I assume (there was a long line when we came in)- we'll try to go on a week night next time. But that's also a sign of a good restaurant. All in all we had an amazing evening- Justin made sure... and his servers really stepped up to the plate and un-did our initial impression. We look forward to returning when we're in Layton to sample their tacos and know our family who just moved there will become regulars. Ate here with family on a Friday night. Service was slow and the food was a major disappointment. I ordered the Chile Verde, which is a favorite anytime I go for Mexican food. However, the shredded beef had green sauce on top but other than that had no representation of what I was expecting. Mercy! Love me some good Mexican food and this is the best!! I love the one in Logan so to have one closer makes me so happy!! So happy it opened!! The service was off the charts. Jay I think might be my favorite server. He was so on top of it. Never asked for anything. They brought the hubby the wrong meal a sweet pork burrito and he ordered a steak one. He knew the minute he walked by that something was wrong. A new burrito was made and delivered. He was funny and honest and took care of the kids perfect. My salad was awesome. No dressing needed the chicken was cooked perfect! The burritos since we got to try both were really good!! The chips were flowing like water - so warm and the salsa had the best flavor! Amazing food but terrible service/experience. First visit to this location and compared to other locations needs improvement. The waitress was mostly attentive when taking our order but basically MIA afterward. We were immediately given chips and salsa after being seated. Our appetizer and meal came quickly, however the last thing delivered to our table was a napkin and silverware. At one point I was eating ceviche off a chip, our waitress walked by right as some of the juice dripped down. She noticed and kept walking. Luckily, we were sitting by the bar and grabbed napkins from the counter. One issue with the food was my friend's chimichanga wasn't as big as expected, he emptied his plate and was still hungry. Luckily my burrito was more than I could eat so he was able to finish it. We arrived about an hour prior to close and they were obviously trying to get as much closing done. Completely fine and understandable, if it weren't for the chairs being dragged across the floor upstairs, right above our heads and our waitress neglecting us while upstairs. She never refilled our drinks and we sat for about 10 minutes with empty plates before asking another waiter for our bill. That even took a minute to get his attention since he was at the bar joking around with the bartender. Our waitress finally came over with the bill and made a comment how we hoped we would treat her right. In our opinions, the comment was tacky and it was a lot to ask for not treating us well. read more

May 16, 2021 Well where to start. When we walked into the Layton Cafe Sabor today, the waitress looked like she had, along with the other male employee, dug her clothes out of the bottom of her hamper before coming to work and thrown her hair up in a disgusting half-assed bun. ALL while adjusting herself with her hand down her pants asking us how many there would be. Then, she seated us at the table closest to the servers station and all the noise while her and the other male employee took up the available booths to literally lay down at and be on their phones, not to be bothered to do anything else. Nobody could seem to be bothered to answer the phone that rang for a solid minute and a half either. The nachos I got were a burnt mess with the cheese on top being burnt to the plate while the beans and meat in the middle were just warm. Then as the same employee who had her hand down her pants walked into the server station, she reached in and grabbed some chips from the chip bin. Do any of the employees wash their hands....????? And why is all the extra napkins and cleaning supplies left out in the middle of the dining area on a table to clutter it up? Why do we want to see that as we eat? read more

My daughter-in-law invited me for a birthday lunch. I chose Cafe Sabor and had liked it previously. When we walked in we were ignored while she talked to kitchen. Another family came in and she seated them right away. We just smiled and were polite. Then she seated us in a small table right outside the kitchen. We asked to be moved to a booth. There were several available but she said that wasn't possible and seated us at a tiny table crushed between to other parties. It was loud and uncomfortable. The food was subpar (and I've eaten there before) and service was poor. Very bad choice!! read more

Sabor the Flabor.......... Sorry everyone, It just comes out sometimes. Cafe Sabor is a quaint, train station themed Mexican restaurant........in a Front Runner parking lot. Yeah, it's a weird location, but there were some fantastic things about eating here. The Chips and Salsa are serious prime eating. I would have been happy to sit down and eat nothing but the chips and salsa. I'm craving them as I write this review. The chips were warm and salty (not too salty) and they had both hot and mild salsa available. They had a certain je ne sais quoi (not to be trite), but it made them extraordinary in my book. Secret ingredient?? Maybe. You tell me.I know it's a weird thing to rave about, but they were that good. We tried a decent variety of menu items (although it was hard to put the chips down). The chile verde was fair, the kids meals (quesadilla and burrito) came with a lot of good quality food, and my Chimichanga was also pretty delicious. I wish the shredded beef had been slightly more flavorful, but I was comparing it to some Machaca I had a few days before eating here and I'm not sure any shredded beef will live up to the previous meal again, so I had some pretty high expectations going in. The service was also fantastic. The waitresses were all great and our drinks (and chips) were topped off for the entire meal. I would love to come back and try some other menu items in the future..........or just eat chips and salsa, whatever. read more

Had a chance to try Cafe Sabor for a business lunch recently and I am a total fan! I had the Camerones Mexicanos IT WAS DELICIOUS and huge! Lots of shrimp (I would say I got a least 12) in a savory tomato based red sauce with peppers, onions and mushrooms served on a bed of rice with melted Monterey Jack cheese accompanied by fresh tortillas. It is definitely on my list of favorites! They also have decent chips and salsa (hot salsa could have been hotter) and the burrito my business associate had was at least a foot long and loaded to the brim with chicken, black beans, rice and cheese! This is not your typical Mexican restaurant. So if you are you go expecting that it might be kind of a shock. What they have seems to be more fresh mex, similar to a cafe rio but more upscale. we been coming to cafe sabor for a lot of years and we never had ex like we had today. we call and told us waiting time was 35-45 minute. we show up, and they had no body waiting. Girls who sit us down keep just talking, almost like they don't care about us. I than ask was the reason why we haven't taking to a table, and she replied we have to give our waitress time before we can take more people back, and I told her I can see 7-10 open tables right now, and looks like you have more than few waitresses and aren't very busy like other times and we wait 30-45 minutes at most. we being cafe sabor clients for years since only cafe sabor in Logan center street. Cafe Sabor was fantastic! It came highly recommended by a good friend who said I had to try the Bear Lake Margarita. We came in on a Friday night for that very reason. The place is pretty cool. It is in an old train station with so much history and character. We waited about 10 minutes for a table. It was packed and the space really is not very big. After being shown to our table our waiter greeted us quickly and brought warm chips with hot and regular salsa. I enjoy the hot stuff, but make sure you sample it after they bring water. I made the mistake of underestimating the spice and embarrassingly almost coughed myself to death. Our gentlemanly waiter saved me promptly with some ice water. Drink orders first. Upon discovering they serve Pepsi products, I was forced to stick with the booze. While I was excited to see Wasatch Jalapeno ale on tap, I had to try the Margarita that came so highly touted. My date also went with a classic Margarita as they are only $3 on Fridays. True to form the Bear Lake Margarita did not disappoint. Mine had a bit more tequila than the the regular on special which I am sure was just the ready mix kind with the booze already in it. Both were very good considering we were in Davis county. For entrees my date ordered her go to chimichanga and I decided on a shredded beef burrito. We also ordered some chips & guacamole for an appetizer. The guac was refreshingly fresh, but there wasn't a lot to it. Having a do-over, I'd skip the $9 guac and probably try the spinach artichoke dip instead. Entrees came out quick. The portions were just right boarding on too much, but perfect after a long work day and a long week. Flavor was good. I'd prefer a bit more kick and we both agreed it needed more sauce. I could also have done without the pico de onions. Food was good, margaritas I'm convinced are the best north of SLC, and ambiance was on point. Our waiter was nice enough but the entire staff seemed like they just didn't want to be there. Also while we were waiting we caught a peek at the kitchen which I wish had not been the case as it was a health inspector's nightmare. Thankfully we both had a great experience and neither of us experienced any foodborne illnesses. Cafe Sabor is close to earning all 5 stars if not for cleanliness, lack of enthusiasm from a mostly young staff, and Pepsi. Two margaritas, two entrees, and guacamole ran a bill of $43.30 after tax and before tip. Not a bad way to spend a Friday night. We'll be back for sure very soon. read more

This is probably a gross oversimplification of things, but in my experience, there are two kinds of Mexican restaurants in the U.S. The kind where the owner has employed their entire family to work in the restaurant. Grandpa in the kitchen, grandkids serving and busing, a simple menu with things like tripe and cabeza and menudo. You wont see a "wet" burrito on these menus. If there is cheese on anything, it's probably cotija. Drink choices might be bottles of Fanta, Mexican coke, and Pacifico or Dos Equis. These places might be decorated with framed pictures of saints and candles with the virgin Mary, might have vinyl table clothes, and might have some of the best Mexican food you have ever tasted at prices so cheap you feel like you should leave a 100% tip. They also might give you severe food poisoning. It's an exciting Russian Roulette type of thrill. Then there are the other kind, where you can find things on the menu like "fiesta salad", chimichangas, giant burritos filled with meats, beans, rice, cheese, vegetables, and smothered in sauce and more cheese. You might see margaritas, and fountain drinks and chili lime chicken poppers with chipotle ranch dipping sauce. These places might be decorated with sombreros, pinatas, framed photographs of mariachi bands and Diego Rivera paintings. The food here might be good too, but it will be a totally different kind of food. Cafe Sabor is the latter of the two types... but it's got a cool kid vibe. The food is solid for this version of Mexican. The salsa is tasty, the chips keep coming, and the margaritas are cheap and A-OK. I've ordered a lot from the menu here and I've never been disappointed. I really like the steak salad and the chicken nachos. The fajitas are good too. If you're the kind of person who talks about how you only like authentic Mexican, you might be disappointed. But if you don't mind blurring the lines between cultures and if you can respect all points on the food spectrum of the melting pot that is America, it's a good bet for a quick and tasty lunch. read more

YUMMY!!! To start with, we could have just eaten those salsas all day long. Seriously. One had a great smoky flavor, the other was just super-fresh; you could taste all the ingredients. They clearly did not come out out of a bottle. I had enchiladas (one ground beef, one cheese), and two is usually almost too much for me, but I cleaned my plate they were so good. This was my first time dining in at Cafe Sabor. I was happy they had a good amount of parking, it's right next to the front runner station. The interior felt very clean and trendy. The staff was nice, our waitress was a little confused at points and when one guest asked if they could have horchata without ice she was like they require me to fill the whole cup with ice so you don't get as much. So I guess don't order the horchata if you're thirsty! I really liked the nacho fries and the chimichanga was loaded with so so much chicken. I did like that the food wasn't super greasy. read more

My husband was given my order. He took a couple of bites before realizing that it was not the correct entree, but the server told me that they were working on a replacement order for ME (meaning my husband was basically stuck with what he got.) They brought me what I ordered, and my husband asked them to take the incorrect order off his bill. They told him that "since he ate part of it," and they had to throw his original order away, they would not take the wrong order off the bill. They never told us they were working on his original order in the first place! In addition, the incorrect order was much more expensive than the correct order. We went to the Layton location... It was a weird space to get to, but good GOD totally worth the GPS recalculations . Walk in the door, bam, greeted by a whole case of fine chocolates. Umm ok wow super nice. To your right, and I have to say, it takes ####s, you see the kitchen right as you walk in. Super clean and yet obviously a working kitchen. The staff seemed super happy to be there... And it shows in the food. But first, the service , Tyson, our server , was spot on. Fantastic, always there when you needed him, no hovering. Ok. The food. To start off, the food arrived quickly, and hot (I hate lukewarm lightbulb warmed food). It was served with pride, and dare I say, flair. My husband had the Cali-changa. It was beautiful to look at, and it was delicious (heh, I snuck a piece). I had a shredded beef quesadilla. I eat quesadillas often, as I still suffer from PTSD due to a sordid encounter with Mexican food ages ago. How do I describe this. Starting with the technical construction. There was a perfect balance of beef to cheese; they filled the tortillas all the way to the edge, no empty edges here. It was crispy , cheesy (duh), and very well presented. The flavor. The beef was perfectly seasoned, no nasty fat chunk surprises, they use top quality beef. Super yummy. Saved some space for dessert. We ordered the churros. Choo-rows. LOL. I come from a place where churros are a part of regular life. These were expertly prepared. Crispy on the outside, chewy inside. Just enough cinnamon and sugar, not too much, just right. Ok wait- they serve it with 2 side dipping sauces. Caramel mmmmmmm and mole chocolate. Try it. It's not regular chocolate. It's well, just try it. . So price wise, 2 adult drinks, 2 full entrees, 1 dessert for 35 and change. All and all a great value. Oh and the portions we're ginormous :) go- just go. Shop local, eat local! read more

Was waiting for the FrontRunner and had a bit of time to pop in and get something quickly to go. Their whole menu is really well priced and they have a great selection of cocktails and beers! I wanted to stay but had to get something quickly to go. The chicken taco I ordered took just a couple of minutes if even to be prepared and I got some complimentary chips and salsa as well. (Super cheap for the amount of food I got) absolutely delicious, best taco I've had in Utah yet hands down. The staff was so friendly, and the ambiance of the restaurant was really welcoming and cute- next time I come into Layton station I'm totally coming in for a sit down meal. Read that some people were surprised by the location being right next to the trax.. but how much more convenient can you get?! read more

Called to confirm and the gentleman say he would lock it up for me as I was over an hour away and had to be somewhere else that evening. Returned on Monday and was given back my card. Saved to have another wonderful meal. The wait staff is fantastic, but Ty went above and beyond. He noticed we were running low on salsa and brought more without us asking. However, the crowing moment was when he looked at my daughter's meal and said, I see the kitchen messed up your order, let me solve this for you. I went there last weekend. Usually Sabor is great. I've never been disappointed. Also my friend has ordered their pastor tacos with pork instead of chicken. This time they said they were unable, we've been like 5 times before and it has happened. She did like her jalepeno Margherita. I tried something new with both my drink and food. I didn't like either. The drink I knew was a total gamble because it was from the non alcoholic drink menu and then I added a shot so I don't blame that one on them. But my steak nacho fries were meh. The steak was over done and everything with it was just boring. I think they should use different fries instead of waffle fries. For a Saturday lunch it was pretty boring. The service was alright. Some of the staff seemed like they weren't doing anything and then our waitress seemed like she was doing a lot of tables for just herself. While waiting for the front runner heading to SLC, I stumbled upon this restaurant that was right there at the same parking lot. With my stomach growling and eager of hunger, I've decided to walk-in and try their food. Immediately saw service and they walked me to the closest table. Service handed me the menu and of course I had to go through it. Service asked what I would like to drink in the meantime and of course I ordered water. Not knowing what other drinks they had and I was lazy to look for drinks on the menu. Service left and came back with my water. Ordered appetizer then my food which I believe was enchiladas. Service took my order, came back with my food minutes later and sat my food down on my table. The savory flavor, juicy shredded beef, mouth watering, fit for a king. Great Tex Mex!!!! I say Tex Mex, or even southwestern style food just because Red Iguana is kind of my definition of authentic Mexican food. Regardless, this place was great. The chips were warm and they served two different types of salsa, one hot and one mild. They were both fantastic. We went through 4 dishes! The menu had a lot of variety, and the prices were reasonable. I ordered a corona and a shredded beef smothered burrito. My partner orders two enchiladas and a fruity alcoholic beverage. We both enjoyed our meals. Saucy, cheesy, fresh warm substantial tortillas, rice and beans that had flavor and weren't just a filler. It was a great meal. My partners drink (I can't remember what it was called but it was blue) was absolutely delicious. If you drink, try it. My only complaint was that the shredded beef had good spice (spice, not heat two different things) but was rather bland.
