This place was soso good! One of the best I've had in Utah. Jarochos is a small joint located in Layton, and upon entering, you are greeted by a sweet lady. We ordered many different items, and the menu offers a lot too. The choriqueso and chips were the perfect appetizer. There was so much queso that I just wished we had a bit more chips. The gordita inflada was something I have not had before, and I really enjoyed it. The tacos were flavorful, and the chicken empanada was tasty and fried perfectly. The only thing I would mention is that the service takes a bit long, but I don't think they have much staff, so plan to wait a bit for your food. Excellent food. Reviewers praise it as "authentic Mexican food". I have no experience to know if that is true or not, but the menu choices are quite different than those I've seen in most American nMexican restaurants. I had four enchiladas smothered with mole, and I thought it very tasty, even though the heat level was right at the edge of my liking (I'm a wimp, I'm sure others would rate it as only medium heat). I've been here twice, came back today for a third time. So far everything I've ordered was absolutely delicious. I'm from Los Angeles where some of the best Mexican restaurants reside, I know my stuff. The menudo, empanadas, flautas and everything else I've had has been delicious! Everything was fresh and made to order. Handmade tortillas, delicious salsas I can go on and on. Updated review: just went back and after a 5star review when this place was just getting going I've got to say I'm much disappointed with where its gone. Menu has changed but only in price. They added an option for chips and salsa but you have to pay for them. And the staff has become much less friendly. The food is still really good, but I won't be back anytime soon. To bad, I really want to like this place. On a side note. Watch your final price. I had a ticket for two and was up charged over $5. She doesn't give you an itemized bill just runs a calculator or tells you a price. I know two of us didn't order that much food even after being charged for chips and salsa. This place is delicious. The Asada Tacos were very flavorful. They were seasoned well and the meat was juicy, not dry. The Pastor Tacos were quite good. I missed the pieces of pineapple in them though. I really enjoyed the Tostada El Pollo. The chicken was delicious. The flavor isn't one noted and has a citrusy taste to it. Average small size taco Picada 3.6/5: I had the the chipotle one. Perfectly spicy. The masa is made in house and it's great Tamale 3.2/5: Had the verde. Average tamal, nothing special Burrito 5:5/ ENORMOUS and covered in sauce. So freaking good Quesadillas 5/5: Bomb.com with their asada. Size wise it's around 3x a taco bell quesadillas. Comes with 3 different sauces to dip into. We showed up for a late lunch on a Monday. They were only taking call in take out orders, so we ordered 8 tacos and sat in the car while they were put together. Tacos were something like $1.75 a piece and while they were very small, they were loaded up! Totally delicious and perfectly prepped. Both salsas were tasty, but neither of them overly impressed us. A hidden gem on Main Street in Layton. It's worth searching for because it's delicious Mexican food made by such kind people. My husband had a quesadilla and tacos, it was a ton of food and he loved it. I had chicken flautas, I get them every time I go because they are so good! My son is a regular there and they make him a special plate that isn't on their menu because it's a favorite of his from when he lived in Mexico. It's called Milanesa and it's basically super thin chicken fried steak. This place is so good AND a bargain. read more

Wow! This is some wonderfully surprising authentic Mexican food!! What a treat! Just moved to UT from So. CA so I know good Mexican food when I taste it. This little hidden place has wonderful service from the owner and her aunt who run the place. It is located inside the Argentinian store called El Mate' and is open until 7pm Mon-Sat. The style of Mexican food served is from the state of Veracruz. I ordered a couple of chicken empanadas and a chicken tostada. Absolutely fabulous! read more

Was very scared of going here just because I have been to a few bad Mexican restaurants and they have really let me down. Glad I came here though. Their tacos, specially the tripas are crunchy, flavorful and delicious. The chips and salsa are a big deal to me and even though they are different, the chips were salty hardier with visible ground corn and the salsa was slightly on the sweeter side making it perfect for their chips. The sopas were also very good. My husband loves them. Just be careful with their spicier sauce. It will burn your face off. Great food! We stopped in after a hot day at Great Salt Lake and so glad we did. I had a chicken tostada and it was so light and refreshing. The crema was the perfect touch with the chicken, tomato, and avocado. We also had the fried plantains and they were the best I've ever had! They come with refried beans, which was perfect for me, as my tostada was served alone. The plantains were crispy and lightly sweet, an excellent light dessert.
