I used to come here for roast chicken and pasta but noticed the menu has changed. I would come for the UBC famous cinnamon buns now which is gooey and delicious! If you haven't tried it you are missing out! I like that it doesn't have the icing that Cinnzeo has. There are other pastries too! Maybe a gluten free option. read more

I seem to remember the pasta here being better... I had the Alla Norma today for the first time in a long while and was disappointed to get a stereotypical university cafeteria meal. The pasta sauce was fine and there were lots of veggies, so the dish likely would have been decent if it was cooked properly, but the pasta and vegetables were over-cooked and mushy, presumably from sitting in a hot-holding unit for who knows how long. The garlic bread was soaked and then some in butter. There was enough pooled in the nooks of the bread that I could just tip the bread over and pour it off. It's not like the food was phenomenal before, but I thought it was good enough for a quick-service cafe, but this was just lazy. The baked goods are still the same as you get at other UBC cafes, which I'm mostly a fan of. I find that the decaf espresso in drinks has kind of a burnt taste; it's alright in lattes, but I had it as an americano today and it wasn't really worth it for me. On the upside, the value is decent. The pastas and flatbreads are heartier fare than you'll find at most of the coffee shops (UBC-owned or not) around campus, and my pasta and (big) cookie today came out to about $14 total. And the service is usually friendly enough. They have dine-in plates and mugs but you need to specifically request them - they will not ask you. read more

I can't believe this is part of UBC food services?! The ambiance in this place is just lovely, warm and inviting. Having said that, I find the temperature too warm, so glad to sit in the open and airy atrium next door. Sure it's cafeteria style, but it sure feels like a step above the rest around here. The roasted chicken is pricey for lunch, but a very good option if you're not feeling like a sandwich. Saw their sign that boasted the best macaroni and cheese on campus, so had to try.... I was not disappointed and would agree that it was the best mac and cheese around! They did not skimp on the real cheese, and the pasta was all dente; pretty good for mass production. Their small coffee is generously sized and gave me the buzz I needed to get through the afternoon after a delicious, high carb lunch. read more

You need to understand that the meat breakfast sandwich is what dreams are made of. Let me explain this situation: imagine a light, fluffy English muffin - top it with shredded mozzarella cheese (recently a mozzarella cheese slice, shredded is better though) and delightfully seasoned capicola and toss it in the oven to be toasted. While it is toasting, a poached egg is being heated to perfection. Once the perfect, runny-yolk egg is added to the sandwich it is coated in Hollandaise sauce, decorated with arugula and finished with a succulent balsamic glaze. Never had a better breakfast sandwich combination in my life. On a side note, they have a morning breakfast sandwich and coffee special that I never get because I dislike their coffee to that extent but I will always return for the breakfast sandwich. Some days the egg is more perfect that other days but I will embrace that as a risk that I am willing to take because on the day the egg is perfect your life will be changed as far as breakfast sandwiches can change your life Also the breakfast sandwiches are only served until 10:30 I think... Pretty good sandwich. I had a prosciutto sandwich and it was nice and flavorful. The salad was just ok. I wasn't able to try their pasta because they start serving salad from 11 but i will try next time. I think in general, UBC has a lot of options for good sandwiches(Loafe cafe, harvest, Deli, Vegan place). I wish there are better options for foods aside from sandwich and salad.... read more

In terms of UBC food services, this one's pretty good. Being around the corner most days of the week, I've tried everything in the area and this is the best bang for the buck. Go for the quarter chicken dinner for like $8.00. Comes with salad and rice. They make a pretty good coffee, too. Bonus: All their disposable cutlery is made of biodegradable bioplastic and their paper take away containers are made of recycled paper without coatings or styrofoam, making them fully biodegradable, too. Unbonus: they don't offer a dine-in option to use real plates and cutlery. read more

Full disclosure: I spend money at Perugia pretty much every day, Monday through Friday. I work in the building, and if I want a coffee in the morning, a quick bite for lunch or a snack between meetings then it doesn't get much more convenient. If you added up the cash I've spent there on a weekly basis over the last 3 years, the amount would be considerable. What can I say, convenience counts for a lot. That said, I'm actually kind of a fan of the place. The coffee is decent as UBC food services goes, and the deli food while not amazing is hearty if a touch pricey. At least once a week I'll partake in the veggie panini or the lunch wrap sans meat (usually with a tasty potato salad or broccoli slaw on the side) and I'm a sucker for a cookie when the ol' sweet tooth comes a knockin'. It's not gonna set your world on fire unless you somehow have even lower expectations for this kind of a spot than me (note to you: this is unlikely). Having worked in a building with naught in the vicinity but the hated Bread Garden, I'm happy to have something reasonably palatable available to me when I don't feel like making the trek to the SUB or the Village. Look, it's a frigging university cafe. You spend your money, you get what you pay for. It ain't special, but it ain't gotta be special. I'm cool with that. read more

Perugia serves up milano coffee (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/milano-coffee-roasters-vancouver-2) - decent coffee at a decent price ($1.70 tax in for small drip). The rest of the beverage options are pretty straightforward, nothing too exciting. They've also got a great pastry selection - but again, they're not the most amazing baked goods around. I'd personally prefer a fresh-baked muffin or granola bar from Agora down the street. The food items are very tasty and they carry a pretty good rotating selection of sandwiches, wraps, and entree items (lasagna, pasta, rice dishes etc.). It's a pretty fair dining option when you're stuck in south campus and you need a more substantial meal. The sandwiches are definitely more appetising than the junk you get at Starbucks. Plus way cheaper, panini + side salad = $7.60 (compared to Starbucks, just a sandwich is $8.20, and it's gross). Their utensils and containers are also on the eco-friendly side, as far as disposable containers go, and there is easy access to compost & recycling bins. The GREAT thing about Perugia is the seating options. There are lots of tables, a bar-height table along one wall, and a cozy couch-bench along another wall. There are giant windows spanning one whole wall so tons of beautiful sunshine comes pouring into the cafe. But if there aren't any tables free in the cafe itself, there are tons of tables to sit at in the nearby Life Sciences Center atria. It's a great place to study or read since they often don't play music, but consequently not the best place to just hang out. Perugia gets 4 stars for a great location, great seating, and average food & bev. read more

Was in the UBC area for a research study and came here for a lunch. I am actually surprised at the quality of the food for the UBC area which seems to be hit and miss. I had the mac and cheese after seeing someone else's photo. This did not disappoint. Good balance of sauce and noodles. It was comfort food on a cold day. We arrived to UBC after breakfast and some walking around at the art gallery. We were really hungry and wouldn't have felt well exploring the university with a little more fuel in our tummy. The location was about to close for the day, but they still had a Mac and cheese and the garlic bread. It didn't taste like anything that was made from a packet or precooked- good quality loaded with cheese and a nice texture from the way it was cooked. The bread had a good amount of butter and just the right amount of seasoning. There was also a coconut curry (lentil?) soup. I honestly cannot remember its name and it looked green a very soupy, but once we got into it there was some good amount of vegetables in it. The soup was very good and delicious. The service was extremely nice and it didn't take them long to gather the food. The area was nice- we were glad there was something at the university, and prices were very reasonable. read more

Their coffees is meh and gives me the jitters. Before they introduced real sugar they had those pumps of sweeteners... gross. I have to put in half a cup of milk for the coffee not to taste bitter. One of the better places for coffee on campus--at least it's not a Starbucks. It's a decent place for lunch also. They have a good selection of soups. And once i had a yummy eggplant panini. The staff is always really nice. And they're down to using biodegradable containers and cutlery. I'm glad UBC food services is into composting everything. read more

One of the better UBC food places; they're not just a cafe, they also serve cooked food (even in the summer) which is fairly decent and relatively affordable. Their breakfast stuff is nice (the breakfast sandwich is way better than the one you'll get at the Starbuck's down the street), and the staff is all really friendly and helpful. Best selection in the mornings, by the afternoon they've cleared out of any pre-made stuff like samosa and salads and whatnot. read more

The food here is actually really good, if there is any left at 2:30 i the afternoon. My gripe with this place is the service. It really is terribly run: slow, slow, slow. The person at the cash leaves to make a pasta dish and leaves a lineup of people waiting for five minutes. really too bad. They had a good manager here, but she was shipped off to IRC and the present manager has been a poor replacement IMHO. read more

This was one of my favourite places for lunch on campus! Until today. They took the Wild Mushroom Flatbread off the menu. WHY?!? Now, they did replace it with a different flatbread that also has mushrooms. But, they are pickled mushrooms. And, the new one has no cheese on it. WTF? Needless to say, the new barren looking, bland tasting flatbread is no substitute for the rich, cheesy flatbread covered with a ton of delicious mushrooms! Such a dreamy dish! The food is subpar and service can be incredibly rude and disorganized. Don't even try the pasta--it's tasteless and almost mushy. For an "Italian cafe" you would think they at least know that pasta should be al dente. The roast chicken is good though. read more
