I'm not sure why the reviews are so mixed on this place. We checked it out this weekend since the weather was beautiful and Cafe Montmartre has an abundance of outdoor seating and we really enjoyed our lunch here! We decided to split several things. We started with the baguette with apples and brie- all really good! Though the baguette was thicker and fluffier than expected, it was still very good bread. Then we continued with the french onion soup, complete with the thick layer of crunchy cheese. For our entree we split a bacon cheddar quiche with a side salad. We really liked the quiche- the bacon was crispy and the quiche was savory and satisfying. The service was just ok, they didn't come by too often and we had to ask for more bread, but seats by a lake on a gorgeous day made up for it. read more

This is a fun way to enjoy Lake Ann in Reston! Food is much better than anything nearby. Excellent wines by the glass. Try the duck mousse Pate and the quiche! read more

First: service was great! Fast, efficient, friendly. Food: Meh. Pricey. Not great. We had the gazpacho, which was the highlight of our afternoon visit. Then on to a sampling of appetizers. Smoke salmon was okay, but very expensive for the serving size. Mushroom caps were small -- which means a pinch of crab in each --and not that great. Again, skimpy serving for the price. Also had the grilled veggies, which was a small dish of cold veggies with a salad that had a tarragon dressing that wasn't very tasty -- too vinegary. Tried the viet rolls that were the saltiest food we've had in a long time. Almost inedible. If you order, skip the sauce. Not a lot of dining options at Lake Anne but you can skip this one knowing you're not missing anything. read more

Excellent service and good food! Went there for brunch with a friend, all delicious! First time there, excellent location near the lake, lots of outdoor seating for nice weather, comfortable and modern on inside. Menu was very French for brunch, so we got that - quiche, French onion soup, creme breule , warm baguettes. I got the French onion soup and tuna sandwich on French bread with side salad. My friend got the brunch special with the mimosa, mushroom and onion quiche, side salad, and choice of dessert, and a coffee. The bread was warm and fresh! The quiche was light and tasty! Mia skips work and gets paid again!! Ok, so Cafe Montmarte is where the planning stages took place. After a brilliant lunch filled with delicious golden calamari and the best tuna sandwich I've ever had - how could I go to work? I just wanted to bask up the sun on the "shores" of Lake Anne. The cafe is situated in a quaint shopping center with bistros lining the sidewalk right in front of the "lake" which looks more like a giant swimming pool. It's very reminiscent of something you'd find hidden in an "off the beaten path" sort of place in continental Europe. That being said, the atmosphere is great, especially on a warm spring day when you can sit outside underneath the umbrellas and people watch, while sipping on your wine (or in my case water with extra lemon) and enjoying a leisurely lunch. The servers are very sweet and pay attention to your every need. I will definitely skip work to dine here again (with Leila of course!). read more

I was taking a box of books to sell to the used bookstore next door, but I was starving for lunch. I happened upon this bistro and decided to give it a shot without any prior research (gasp - the horror!). I was very pleased with my lunch at Cafe Montmartre. It's a very French menu with baguettes and quiche and pate. I had the potato leek soup and it was very good. I don't know why I was expecting more of a chowder or a bisque, but it was a clear broth with potatoes and leeks. In any case, it was pretty tasty. Then I had the crab quiche and that was really very good. Atmosphere-wise, the restaurant is very bright with large windows facing Lake Anna. There are no booths, but they have about a dozen four-top tables that could be pushed together for a larger group. There's also a full bar and what looked like a good selection of martini's. It was tempting to give one a try, but I needed to sell my books and get back on the road. The service was attentive, friendly, and helpful. The prices are higher than what I normally pay for lunch, but that's partially due to having the soup and the quiche. The quiche came with a side salad that had very crisp, fresh, delicious tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, and greens. Their house dressing is home-made, and the waitress was happy to check the ingredients for me to make sure there was no MSG (I have an allergy to MSG, and it tends to be a common ingredient in ranch-type dressings). Overall, I really liked my lunch there and I would go back again. read more

Avoid at all costs. I waited 20 minutes for a server ... even telling her twice that I wished to place an order, and was dismissed both times. One owner stopped by to ask if I would move to another table in the event that a larger group wanted mine. The other owner walked up just as I was packing up to leave without having even been offered a glass of water. I explained to her that I was leaving because of the total lack of service. Quaint bistro at the original Reston Town Center in Reston, Virgina. I say original as there is a "newer" Reston Town Center about 1 mile away but this is the original that was built when Reston as a planned community was constructed in the '60's. Cafe Montmartre is one of about 4 restaurants in the Plaza area bordering Lake Anne. 3/4's of the year when the weather is warm, the outside sitting area is the place to eat if you want a relaxing, picturequese setting though they should upgrade the plastic/vinyl chairs and tables used for outside seating. The food is good (not very good or excellent). The Montmartre Burger or French sausage over pasta is what I generally order. The prices are ok, slightly more expensive then the quality of the food would suggest but you are paying somewhat for the locale. The clientele is generally the liberal (politically speaking) set of Northern Virginia/Washington DC or just plain locals that find it convenient and accessible to walk to the plaza. For those that feel the American Dream is not complete without matching Hummers in the driveway, the New Reston Town Center is nearby. During winter months, traffic drops off significantly though I have not noticed any negative drop in quality of their servings during those months. read more

Had a chicken sandwich here one a croissant. It was pretty good, but not great. They could have put some sauce or something on it as the chicken was a bit dry. The place felt weird though, perhaps because it was slow. It was clean though and the staff was friendly. read more

Sorry, but no. I hate to be harsh on a little place at Lake Anne, but why can't we get some better places at Lake Anne? I won't bother going into how badly the place is in need of some updating, as it's pretty much in line with what you can expect in the plaza. They can get away with a lot in that regard, given the availability of outdoor seating on a nice day. But they can't get away with bad food, and, there's no getting around it, the food is bad. I ordered the chicken croissant sandwich. It's just a piece of chicken on a dry croissant. No veggies, no sauce, no mayo, nothing. Chicken. On. Bread. It comes with a side caesar salad, and unfortunately that was no better. The salad leaves were wet, so I could see they were dressed, but the dressing had absolutely zero flavor. It was like eating damp romaine. My husband ordered the steak sandwich. It was a slab of overcooked meat on a dry roll. Again, no sauce or mustard or anything else to counteract the dry steak and even dryer chunk of bread. I don't know how he choked that thing down. The staff seems nice and I feel a bit bad saying I won't be back, but, yeah, I certainly won't ever be back. read more

After going nearly twenty years (from 2002 to 2021) without even coming near this gem of a cafe, I ate out at a restaurant (well, with outdoor dining) for the first time since the pandemic, on Mother's Day of 2021. I could have made a meal alone from the appetizers. Cafe Montmatre serves both French and Vietnamese cuisine. I immediately fell in love with the well seasoned pork and onion spring rolls. I also loved that their calamari was well battered, but light and crispy as opposed to soggy and heavy. Additionally, I tried their escargot, and thought the creamy mushroom sauce made with garlic butter, and topped with dried red pepper flakes with divine. It was the perfect combination of saltiness and silkiness. For my main course, I had the Poulet Grille, which is comprised of chicken strips in a creamy, just garlicky enough tomato sauce. However, instead of a heavy milky sauce, the consistency felt like the perfect balance of diary, oil, and herbs. This underrated cafe is highly recommended. read more

4 1/2 stars Yeah, this place is awesome especially considering the price. Went for dinner with my girlfriend and I have to say I love Lake Anne anyway but this is just over the top for this area. Appetizer was great (tomatos and mozarella) as was the carafe of wine which was surprisingly affordable. I had the Steak Frittes sandwich, cooked medium rare and my girlfriend had the trout. My sandwich was OUT OF THIS WORLD good. The steak was large and thick, cooked and seasoned perfectly. It was put ontop of a fresh baked baguette. My girlfriends dinner was flavorful and not overcooked. The only thing I was very disappointed with was the dessert. We ordered the chocolate mousse which came in a small dish, and an even smaller portion but they charged $6.95 for it. This honest to god wasn't even 3 ounces of mediocre chocolate mousse. Complete rip-off. The service was great, the ambiance was great, and it is always nice to walk around this shopping center and around the lake. I will definitely return. read more

The y were off key and oblivious to the fact they were in a small restaurant and not a stadium. We've been here a number of times since moving to Reston and it's become our go to brunch spot. It's a shame more people don't know about this place. It's far better than any brunch available at Reston Town Center. Not to mention the lovely setting right on Lake Anne. The brunch menu is simple and all excellent. I liked the apples in the salad so it wasn't so ordinary but I was appalled that they put sliced American Cheese in the salad. How tacky! Especially when the salad cost $19. We ate here on an absolutely gorgeous day, so that always helps. Beautiful view from the outside tables of the lake and right near the fountain. The food was really good and waiter was very pleasant. At our table, we tried a carafe of the chardonnay, which was very reasonably priced and quite yummy for being the house wine. We also tried the escargot, tuna salad on baguette, and the tomato mozzarella, artichoke salad. Prices were reasonable and they had a pretty expansive menu. The seating doesn't look as nice as the place next door to this, but the food was delicious and I would return. read more

I hemmed and hawed about coming here due to the mixed reviews so I was a bit leery about coming to try. Came here on a cloudy Sunday late afternoon. The place only had a handful of diners, but we arrived just as several other groups were seated. Because of this, it took a few extra minutes to get to us as they only had 3 people working for both inside and out. They were quick to get us water and bread, but almost 10 minutes to get our orders. But by then everything had a smooth flow. (I won't dock points for ill timing!) We had an appetizer of summer rolls, dinner of shrimp stuffed with crab, crab quiche and the viet grill (pork and shrimp). I think if it wasn't rude to lick the plates clean, we would have!!! Everything was delicious! For dessert, we ordered the apple dumpling and the chocolate mousse. Another reviewer mentioned to not pass on the mousse and that is a spot on suggestion. The mousse is light, not too rich with a hint of a liqueor of some kind. The apple dumpling came with a small dollop of handmade custard and mousse. All on all... highly recommend. I love Cafe Montmarte! I've come here over the years with one of my coworkers just to meet up and my boyfriend is a fan also. I prefer to come during the spring/summer/fall months so I can sit outside. I don't know if I can think of a better afternoon than relaxing by the lake and enjoying the brie with apples. I've also enjoyed the Oeufs Brouillés Aux Légumes, Le Full Monty sandwich, the Salade d'Épinards -- all delicious, no complaints! This place truly is a hidden gem. I work in Reston, but have a long commute, so I haven't had the pleasure of having dinner there, only lunch. Every meal I've had there has been wonderful. The bread alone is always worth a stop, and the quiches are a favorite of mine. I'm surprised every time I visit that it isn't more busy. I've always sat outside, but I have peeped inside and the place looks very modern with lots of interesting art on the wall that that I'll explore some rainy afternoon, but as long as the sun's out I'd rather be outside enjoying the view of Lake Ann and the lively community. Another nice plus is the used bookstore next door where you can find something fun to read and keep you occupied if you're dinning alone. The only thing that might add to the experience might be some lite, french cafe like music to sweeten the atmosphere. read more

Two of my gal pals and myself were looking for a brunch spot off the beaten path outside DC and this ended up being our choice. Driving from Arlington- this isn't exactly close...but it was a fun drive with some great friends. This place was a bit difficult to find on the GPS, but if you park and walk to the restaurant you should be ok. The restaurant is tucked away on a cute little plaza overlooking the water, with a unique apartment complex over looking the plaza. Cafe Montmarte has an outside sitting area which was perfect for our adventure. We sat outside, ordered cokes, and all had different types of quiche. THE QUICHE WAS AMAZING....seriously great. It came with a side salad which was ok- not ba not great. The quiche was the real all star here!! The server i think was a bit over extended and it took like 15 minutes for them to come back with our cards- even though there were like 5 tables totally full at the restaurant. Interesting place, great quiche, but the distance from DC will not be making it one of my usual places. read more

3.5 stars. Cafe Montmartre is a decent little French-style "brasserie" (notice the quotation marks- aka not really) tucked away inside Lake Anne Plaza. It's a nice choice for a weekend brunch or a light dinner, but I would never call it a destination restaurant. The best aspect of the Cafe is it's location- the aforementioned Lake Anne Plaza. Being nestled in there means that it's outdoor seating area is wonderful, offering up beautiful views of the lake and surrounding shops & apartments. Definitely come during the warmer months to take advantage of this. The food is pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The last time I went, I had French Onion Soup and the Filet de Saumon à L'Aneth (salmon with capers and a dill-lemon sauce). The soup was alright, but with so many other places offering superior versions, I wouldn't recommend it. The salmon, however, was quite enjoyable. The capers worked really well with the salmon, and the sauce played off both nicely. It was a bit too buttery for my taste, but not enough so to ruin the dish. I know several people who love Cafe Montmartre, and go there far more often than I do. So I'll include this just as a final point- it might just be me who's not all that enamored with the place. No matter what, though, it's a nice choice when you're looking for a quiet, beautiful change of pace (the beautiful part coming from the outdoor seating, of course). Come here for a relaxing evening with friends, family, or a loved one. read more

I love that they give genuine, warm Vietnamese/French bread when you dine in. I wouldn't say it is the most freshly made, and is a bit too dry for my tastes, but still freshly toasted. Paired with butter, and you've got yourself a satisfied customer! For lunch I've had the sandwich pate, and the quiche aux champignons et oignons. The sandwich pate was okay, but probably better off getting "banh mi" elsewhere. The quiche was quite delicious and creamy! As an app the saigon summer rolls are ok. The shrimp does stand out as tasting like it's quite fresh and grilled. For dinner I have dared to try the beef pho, and I really couldn't believe that it was so delicious, especially for a non-pho restaurant. The beef was the star of the dish, and what sold it for me. Although it did not come out rare, its quality exceeded most any pho restaurant in the area! The broth was good with plenty of spring onions, but the noodles were a little too stiff (small concern). This isn't a pho restaurant, so I rejected my initial expectation of the basil, lime, and bean sprouts plate. They did give sriracha sauce, though. There are 2 reasons why this perfectly delicious pho would not receive 5 stars to me: the size (I had a small that would probably be considered an XXS at other places), and the price ($7.50 for a small and $11 for a large). However if I'm craving a very well-crafted bowl and willing to shell out the extra bucks, I'd come back for the pho! Looking forward to trying their other dishes too, and enjoying the last moments of good outdoor eating weather. read more

Our first time there last night. Really like how they have spaced the tables so there it feels safe outside on the patio. Our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. And the food is reasonably priced. Two points of feedback on the food: one, the summer rolls had too much vermicelli and not enough veg in them. It was almost all noodles and very little vegetable. The peanut sauce was very good. The bahn mi was good (the chicken was really well seasoned) but lacked the bite of jalepeno that you usually get in them and I didn't get the cilantro either. The other reviews are right about the bread--it is first rate--and we loved our desserts! Great experience overall and we will be back. read more

We asked for water and had to wait for someone whom we could communicate with. The lady who was able to help us seemed quite inexperienced. I have lived in Reston since 2010 and 5 minutes from Lake Anne/this restaurant for the last three years and never tried this place. I tried Calypso's, the thai place, but never here. I REGRET THAT NOW. This cafe is a gem. The interior is adorable, and the food is delicious. SO many options and everything we ordered was delicious--from the summer and spring rolls to start, to the Viet Chicken, Quiche Lorraine and Saigon dumpling soup. The waitstaff was great as well--very friendly and attentive. We brought our dogs and sat outside in their outdoor seating area, and they even asked us multiple times if they could bring water for our dogs. The only bad part about our dining experience, was lamenting the fact that we wanted to try SO many things and simply couldn't choose! Light, refreshing, tasty, high quality food--perfect for a nice lunch out with friends. We can't wait to come back and try more! I almost forgot to mention the BREAD--I was with two people who have traveled internationally extensively, including to France and to Vietnam multiple times, and they said the french baguette at this cafe was the best bread they've ever had, served upon being seated, warm, light and mouth-wateringly delicious. read more

This place is pretty neat. It's a pricey, but you can always get a seat outside. Fairly decent tradeoff. Service is good, about 1,000 times better than Kalypsos. I've had the cajun pasta, which was good, a couple of decent sandwiches, as well as the delicious escargot and french onion soup. As with most everything in Lake Anne, it stays in business because the community is willing to spend a little more than it's worth in order to keep it in business. Would be a great place for a date, and always an excellent place if it's nice out. read more

I'm giving this place one star because it had nice out door seating. Otherwise I am very disappointed. Took my sister and nephews down for lunch. The food was subpar and the service was sincerly lacking. And the price! $50 for a frozen pizza, premade grocery store hamburger and I'm not even sure there was actually tuna on my tuna salad sandwich. I will not be returning. read more

So my one star is 1/1 for the food. Which was great. Everyone enjoyed their meal... but service was horrible. I think they just had the water boy waiting on us. He knew nothing about the menu, took way too long to get drinks ordered (except water..).. there were only a few tables taken, so it wasn't like there were tremendously busy. No manager came by to check either. At this level of restaurant I would expect some kind of attention on a slow afternoon. Not the best way to celebrate a birthday. Hours may have been an isolated incident, but still not planning to ever go back.. but again, the food was good. read more
