Szechwan Spicy Dumpling(10)
John B.

After living in Houston for over a decade, I finally gave this place a try. I was so disappointed. The good stuff first. The staff was very pleasant. They were prompt to check on me, refill my drinks, and check on me frequently. The food also came out very fast. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. Upscale while be comfortable enough to be casual. I actually felt like I was in a PF Chang's. Very similar decor. The food....in my opinion it was very bland with no seasoning and very little flavor. I ordered the lettuce cups and the Szechwan style spicy dumplings. The lettuce cups were a large portion, so that's good. Full of crunchy texture. But completely bland with zero flavor. The dumplings were not spicy at all. I can't handle a ton of spice, so for me to say not spicy means that they were incredibly mild. Usually when I order these at other restaurants they are in a pool of spicy Szechuan oil. Sadly these were not. So I'll give them props for good staff and a nice restaurant, but they need to up the flavor profile of the eir dishes.

Beef with Fresh Hot Pepper

I see this place often and finally decided to stop in for a delicious meal. It was not what I was expecting when we walked in but it was a delight. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We felt a bit rushed at first but it wasn't busy since we came at an off time so I can understand. The food was very very good. I ordered the beef with fresh hot pepper, spicy salmon roll and everything was quite tasty. I like the intimate setting inside Overall it was a pleasant experience and I will certainly be going back for more of their delicious food.

Teriyaki with Tofu (specially made for a vegetarian)

Ample parking and quick service in a pretty restaurant. I asked the waiter the difference between the sauce on two beef dishes and he said that "I'd have to try the dishes to know the difference" but he did said he had them both. The waiter was attentive and visited us a few times to be sure that all was OK. The food was cooked to order and I'd say that it was average food (not flavorful) - only one vegetable dish on the menu but the did make a special tofu dish for my friend. No low calorie options. Not impressive.

Spicy Shrimp and Eggplant

Cafe Ginger is so solid I wish it was closer to my house I would prob be there every other week. Had Spicy Shrimp with Eggplant, a red dragon roll, and wife had sesame chicken. Everything was delicious and service excellent. They also have really nice specialty cocktails. I have come for lunch and dinner a dozen times over the years and always leave full and happy. Also the place has great ambiance and feel. Don't let the strip mall fool you. Inside you will sit a table with white table cloths, beautiful sculptures and art all over the wall's. They have a bar and sushi bar area also.

Plenty of social distancing.

By far one of the best, flavorful Chinese restaurants in Houston. The food is always fresh, the drinks are very nice, and the atmosphere is always nice. The service is always outstanding, they never miss a beat.

Dinner with friends

Okay place for Sunday night dinner with the family. Make sure to confirm any food restrictions repeatedly. We repeated them more than a couple of times. The hot and sour soup is good. The crispy eggplant with chicken is a bit unusual. The crispy eggplant is topped with minced chicken and minced veggies. By the time it gets to you, guess what? The eggplant is not crispy. Ordered moo shu chicken with extra pancakes. Confirmed no pork and no shellfish several times. When they brought the moo shu, we confirmed that it was moo shu chicken. After my husband took a few bites, guess what? Our server came over and apologized that they accidentally made moo shu pork. Nooooo!! Learned our lesson. If we go back with family, no more moo shu chicken, which is one of our favorites.

I cannot believe, I just started hearing about this place within the last six months! I have shopped next door at the TJ Maxx often and never thought of coming here. This is my regular place to meet up with friends now! I love the service is great here as they seat you right away. They have a cocktail bar and sushi bar. The parking is ok, as they are located in a shopping centre. I love the Lychee Martini, I'm telling you, one glass can get you lit! They have lunch specials weekly and a great variety of options. The appetizer menu is so good and we mostly order from there as the portions are almost like an entree. The ambiance is nice, with white table cloths. I recommend making a reservation if you want booth seating. I really enjoy the drinks and food here!

1. General Tso's Chicken
Lauren M.

First time coming here with a group of coworkers and was very impressed with the decor! So beautiful. We were seated in the back room promptly as we had a reservation. The service was notably great. On top of that I felt like the lunch general tso's portion was large and the chicken was hearty. Some general tso's is mostly breading and I didn't feel this way about this dish here. Dumplings were really good! They had a chili sauce that was so good I wanted to take a big batch of it home. I would absolutely come back!

Really nice atmosphere and great food. I usually stick to the sushi, and it never fails to satisfy me- always fresh and beautifully presented. My friends had the lo mein and loved it as well. The martinis are definitely worth recommending. Perfect spot for a great night out.

Nice quiet atmosphere. Tonight maybe 18 customers here tonight. Me and my girlfriend always reserve a seats at the bar or at the high top tables near it. The food is always fresh. Sunny provided great service.

Hot & Sour soup.

Oh my, I found another gem! Cafe Ginger is the real deal on every level! Such a beautiful restaurant. I sat at the bar and immediately had people around me bringing menu, silverware, sauces etc. excellent service from host stand to bartender to servers...all top notch. One thing I loved was the menu. Many Chinese dishes I've never seen at any other restaurant. Yes some of the standards were there but I was excited to go on a new Chinese culinary journey! I ordered the Beijing shredded pork. You have a choice of soup and side. Hot and sour and spring roll for me...both excellent as was the Beijing pork. While waiting for my meal I observed how the ultra professional staff went about taking care of the other guest. Wow...that's how it's done and one would expect a restaurant of this caliber to be expensive but it was very reasonable for what they provided. I can't wait to go back for another 5 Star culinary journey! GREAT JOB!

Finally a chinese japanese spot i can return to over and over! I thoroughly enjoyed the lo mein and wonton soup. It was fresh and just delicious. I am planning my return to try the sushi varieties. The staff is just so flipping great, very attentive, and have great recommendations. The restaurant surprised me when I walked in it looked small feom the outside but expanded when I walked in. I met a long time patron and was ensured all the dishes are all pretty great.

Dumpling (8) Pan Fried

I didn't get to post all of my food but I can say the food was delicious, and freshly made. We got a variety of items from the menu to share amongst our table: general tsu chicken, dumplings, spicy edamame & sushi! The atmosphere is very charming to the cuisine, and the service was great. I will be returning with family next time! Also, The lychee martini paired nicely with the food, definitely recommend going if you want a cozy meal.

Can you bring your own wine?

I don't think so, they have a nice variety of wines in the restaurant in different prices. Indeed they have a full bar.

Is there an outdoor area?

No there is not. Restaurant is so beautiful, you would want to sit inside anyway.

Do they have a full bar or just some small drinks?

Are there gluten-free options?

Don't know. Sorry

Where is the new cafe ginger as we put this address in and doesn't exist? Can someone update the new address?

Even this time the GPS took us to an entrance that had us going the wrong way down a one-way, but we eventually figured it out I will say that the parking isn't all that great, but we were able to find a spot. If the parking lot is full you should be able to find street parking nearby Kanpai Club is a sister location to Handos. They share a kitchen and you can walk through an inside door access either. You can find the same cocktails and bites from Handos on the Kanpai menu, but there's also additional drinks and bites The bar feels like a Japanese Izakaya. It's a narrow space resembling a Japanese outdoor bar. It's intimately lit and well decorated. We did have to wait for two spots to open up, but that didn't take too long The bartenders were friendly, professional, and efficient. We went on a Friday night (fairly late), and they had two dedicated bartenders The cocktails were fun and were beautifully crafted. Most were served in novelty glassware. You can order classic cocktails, but both Kanpai and Hando offer a variety of signature cocktails. Most having some sort of Japanese or Asian fusion. They have beer, wine, and extensive sake list, as well as green tea and other nonalcoholic options The cocktails were tasty. The only one I was iffy on was their Espresso martini. It was poured from a machine and I guess there were having issues with it. The presentation was phenomenal. There was a roasted marshmallow garnish. The drink itself was far too Smokey in flavor than I like, or at least in terms of my espresso martinis The Yuzu Kosho fries were incredible. The flavors really hit the spot. The Okinawa Potato salad was both questionable to looks and and to eat lol. This purple mound of potato's had an interesting taste, look, and consistency. It wasn't bad, just... interesting and new Some tips: If you can't find this spot from the street, look for Handos. It's part of this restaurant Ask the bartender about the happy hour menu. And most nights they're open until 12am, but on Fridays and Saturdays they are open until 2am If you order food online (technically from Hando's) you can get 10% off using code: HANDO10. This is part of their "Hando and Chill" special Cheers!!

Our server, Camille, took our order and then would disappear for 30+ minutes at a time. At one point, when we asked where she had been, she simply said she was "walking around." Her overall approach to serving us felt extremely nonchalant and inattentive. The atmosphere also made us feel as though the level of attention you receive depends on how much you're spending--particularly whether you're purchasing bottles. The servers seemed more focused on creating a bottle-service experience than providing attentive restaurant service. It gave the evening a very transactional, "pay for attention" feeling rather than genuine hospitality. What really sealed the experience for us happened after we had already paid our bill. A host approached our table and essentially said, "Can you leave now? We need to seat someone right now." There was no gracious transition, no "thank you for dining with us," and no polite explanation--just an abrupt request to leave. For a restaurant with such a beautiful ambiance and good food, the service and hospitality were incredibly disappointing. Guests should feel welcomed and valued from the moment they sit down until the moment they leave, regardless of whether they're ordering bottles.

I've only tried the Pepperoni Madness and Fancy Backpacker. The crust is perfectly thin and the toppings pair well together. I would also recommend adding pepperoni to the Fancy Backpacker. Gypsy Poet is always consistent with the taste and service, you can always expect a good experience in both aspects. It's located right at 19th St. and Shepherd near the light. There's a small angled parking lot that can be tight when people park along the fence. It looks like a cute tiny A-frame home with a few patio tables in the front. The inner area has about 6-7 high tables. It's nice and clean inside. The vibe feels similar to H-Town Brewing Co. but on a smaller scale. You can also sit at the bar. I didn't really like the high tables/chairs. They're not as comfortable. It was hot out, and there are mosquitos, so we sat inside. I ordered the salmon plate for steak night. The drinks here are ok, and since I don't really drink, I was looking for mocktail options. In this era, most places have mocktail options with brand alternatives like Ritual, Seedlip and Lyre's or at the least, something with juice, Topo Chico and simple syrup. The female bartender made me a NA margarita which was great. I liked that she didn't make it too sweet or too tart which happens with mocktails that don't have alternatives and are mostly juice or lemon. On the other hand, when I ordered a second, the guy bartender made it too sweet. I didn't like his version. For the alcoholic versions, they seem to have good cocktails, wine, beer and flights. They also have daily specials. Aside from the steak night, they don't serve food here. It wouldn't be my first choice of bars in this area.
