On afternoons when I need a break from work, and it's too hot or cold to sit outside in Union Square, I love to just sit here and read. It's a tiny cafe, with only 4 tables. I randomly stopped by this place as I was shopping around in Union Square. It's super small inside with a few small tables crammed inside. I only ordered a latte...and it was okay. Whatever beans that were used lacked flavor...almost stale. However, the latte was drinkable but I'll skip it next time. read more

This is the worst service you can image. Bad tasting food, poor service and high prices. Not coming back. If you are waiting in a line if they know someone who walks after you they will serve that person first! OMG. Non consistent food. I ordered falafel wrap that came with wasabi inside. Compact but Eclectic: Can't say that I care for the folding chairs and tables on the sidewalk, but the seating inside is cute, and the cafe makes good use of their very limited space. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious, and the pastries are tasty (although still don't measure up to the North Beach pastries or Specialty's). Location is right off of Union Square, so it is handy for breakfast on the way to the corporate workplace or just outside of some local hotels for tourists. The counter people are super friendly, a marked contrast to most other people in Union Square food service (and my god, can you blame them?). I've tried lots of things on their menu, and I'm always happy. Cuddly happy. Seems like lots of people 'round here feel the same way, what with all the crowding in the morning and whatnot. I prefer Encore to just about every other cafe in the area (except for Theatre Too, for the falafel), because it's one of the few that hasn't given me food poisoning! Wheeee! read more

I adore this little cafe in the heart of downtown San Francisco. It was situated a block from our hotel and we went there for breakfast everyday, and we would even pick up sandwiches for lunch! Cafe Encore has a great selection of breakfast foods including, bagels, eggs, fresh fruit, croissants and yogurt, Their sandwiches can be made on croissants or on whole wheat bread, both are delicious. They even have macaroons available to purchase, and they are also delicious! I think the added bonus of this little cafe is the fact that it is pink... and the fact that the freshly squeezed orange juice is to die for. I think breakfast here was the the food-highlight of my trip!!!! read more

Fast, good and cheap - usually you can only pick two, but in this case, you get all three! I popped in last Thursday right before they closed (7:45pm) and got a large spring salad to go and brought it back to work. Several people commented how good my salad looked and yes, it was tasty -- how many places can you go where you can have lots of yummy feta, olives, roasted peppers, almonds, garbanzo beans, add in your fave thing here on top of a mound of spring greens for just $6.50? Not too many places.....and the fact that I got there right before they closed was a non-issue. I'd love to boycott Starbucks and start supporting this place but I've come here twice now within months and both times ordered a Lox bagel and both their versions of a Lox bagel really suck! First time I ordered the bagel had cream cheese and smoke salmon. What happened to the red onions and capers? Thinking that maybe it was something I had to ask for so Second time I ordered specifically asked for red onions. I was asked if I wanted capers too and I said yes. When I finally get to my destination and to open my bagel I get a semi burnt bagel, cream cheese and CHUNKY ass red onions and no capers. WTH, I guess they don't know that red onions are thinly sliced and why even ask if I wanted capers if they won't even put it in. I would have no problems if it weren't so expensive but it cost almost $8. To make matters worst, the mocha I ordered was choked with chocolate that I could barely taste the coffee in it. This place is fine if you need a quick snack or don't feel like arguing with your significant other over where to eat. I didn't think their customer service was all that great, even if others rave about the service. Just because a place is "local," doesn't mean its good. I'd say go here if you are rushed. If not, choose another place to spend your cash. read more

We got here this morning just as a woman was setting the ATM machine up outside the front doors. Despite interrupting her morning set-up, she served us before the place was really supposed to open! We got a Croque Monsieur, a chocolate croissant, and a couple macaroons. The Croque Monsieur was pre-made but toasted up nicely and was very tasty. Actually everything was good. There's free wifi, that works so much better than my nearby hotel, and I sat for a while getting working done without feeling guilty taking up a seat. Service was great. read more

overall the cafe has a little bit of everything, muffins, bagels , and of course munchies and coffee. It caters to the medical building on the premises but also to the art students across the street in which they give a discount if you show your student id. The coffee isnt bad but not great either. Albeit pricey for folgers coffee style brew...youre better off going to cafe la taza which is two doors down the street for authentic brews and cheaper cups. 3/5 judochops. read more

Came here for macaroons one day. They do not have a wide variety of flavors since they only have a tray full of them. The smaller macaroons are bite-size so nibble on it when you get it to savor the flavor!! It is $1.50 each so it is a little pricey. Other than that, the macaroons are pretty good! read more

Was visiting SF this weekend from LA and discovered this little place. LOVED their turkey pesto sandwich. Friendly and fresh. Also tried their bagel breakfast sandwich (egg, cheese, cucumber and tomato) and I loved it. When I come back into town I'll definitely hit this little jewel again. I *adore* this place. I go there several times a week for lunch and/or snack, and it's awesome. The barristas are always so nice and they remember me. Food's good and well-priced. I've stopped in a few times in the morning and the girl working behind the counter ruined my day each time with her bad attitude. It's a pretty small cafe so I don't understand why they jack up their prices so high. There really isn't anything special in terms of the food and drinks they offer. It's on my way to work. My friend recommend the place to me because I was looking for a choco croissant. I love their drink menu. I don't really dabble a lot of drinks there because of my fixation w/ their Oregon Chai Mocha drink. I get these so often that sometimes I hate to admit that I'm addicted to it. Small place right by Union Square. Doesn't seem to be a good area of the city for food, but this place was a nice surprise. Had the California Dream (turkey mayo avocado lt honey mustard on sourdough). Cashier misheard my girlfriend's order and put mayo on her sandwich, but profusely apologized, offered to make a new sandwich, and gave us complementary macaroons. Sandwich was really good, macaroons were delicious. Very reasonable prices for the area, very nice staff. Cute, quaint little cafe right in downtown San Francisco. I'm very indecisive, but every time I went in there, the staff was very patient. I usually got the chai tea latte, and it was very good. Also,there is also an older gentleman who often spends time in there, and if you are up for nice conversation, talk to him. Honestly this place was sorta a bust. I got a chai tea latte that was more expensive than Starbucks and didn't even taste as good (which is saying something since starbs isn't very good haha). My bf got the egg bacon sandwich on a bagel. They first off we're out of all bagels except plain which kinda sucked and then they literally just microwaved the eggs and bacon.. didn't even really cook them. So unless you want food that is solely cooked in the microwave I don't recommend this place especially since there's so many others right around the corner ! read more

The line at Sears Fine Foods was too long so we walked around looking for breakfast and stumbled upon Cafe Encore. It's a little hole in the wall with seating for maybe 8, but upstairs in a loft there are additional seats for another 16 or so.
