An Italian sandwich the size of Texas... sign me up!…read more I went into this market when I was exploring Georgetown one day and I naively ordered an Italian sandwich and once they received it I realized it was big enough to feed a family. I found the cutest little park bench and decided to dig in. Needless to say I had left overs but I could have found a way to eat this whole sandwich because it was that good! Every topping was homemade and you could tell. Def a must stop in DC.

The sandwiches looked epic and the photos of the place looked adorable for a local joint. We walked over from our hotel in Georgetown and were overwhelmed by the sandwich choices. Caught between the Grinder and the Pastrami, we went with the employee's suggestion for the latter. About 5 minutes later we were handed a wrapped sandwich the size of a football. We found a quiet spot to unwrap and enjoy it and dug in. Frankly, I wouldn't order it again, and I think we would have enjoyed the grinder more. It was just a huge pile of meat on pumpernickel bread with mustard. Flavor was meh. Neither of us was overwhelmed for nearly $25. Props for the cute European goods in the shop, though, and the employees were courteous and friendly. But next time I'll look elsewhere for lunch.

I wasn't anticipating a nice dining room to dine in, but there it was so we did. Although it was uncomfortably warm in there. Must have been something wrong with their A/C because they couldn't possibly always have it so warm, especially in the middle of summer. I ordered The Clevelander and she had The Mel. And of course we hit their awesome pickle bar! Why doesn't every deli in the universe have a pickle bar?! The sandwiches are piled high with meat and so delicious. Several complaints about mine, however: the menu said it comes with mayo and provolone. It came out with no spread at all so I was brought mayo packets to apply myself, which is way less than ideal with a huge already assembled sandwich. And the brand new server (on her second day there) came back after we ordered and asked if I wanted cheese. I mentioned I thought it listed a cheese on the menu, which she confirmed. But then I ended up getting charged extra for the cheese that my sandwich was supposed to come with. Kind of lame. And while my friend was asked if she wanted hers toasted, I was not. I didn't think twice about it until mine came out toasted, which I neither asked for or wanted. Lastly, the sandwich was also supposed to come with "fresh cranberry spread" and if there was any on my sandwich, it wasn't detectable. But I decided not to even mention it because I didn't want to deconstruct my sandwich a second time. Regardless of these hiccups, I would certainly consider returning.

I returned nearly after a year and happy to see improvements in packaging. Love foil wrapping because it does not leak and holds the sandwiches better. I heard good things about their sandwiches. My go to is normally Mangialardo's on Pennsylvania Ave in SE DC or Carl's Subbs on Rhode Island Ave in NE DC. I think I will stick to both of them next time. The staff was very friendly and helpful to me as a first timer but the sandwich was totally disapointing! NOT worth it, at all. I ordered a 9 inch capicola, ham, and cheese sub on the hard roll. The roll was very good and fresh but I couldn't taste the cheese or meat in the sandwich because there wasn't enough of it. I tasted the bread, the toppings of lettuce, tomato and onions. I decided to deconstruct the sandwich and found exactly 4 very thinly sliced pieces of meat and 2 very thinly sliced pieces of cheese as pictured clearly in the photographs. I also noticed that the they have different prices for the same type of meats. For example, they have a $29.99 per pound Capicola and one for $9.99 a pound. I asked which went on the sandwich and of course it was the cheaper one. That wasn't surprising and getting my sandwich back to the office. I decided not to eat the rest of the meatless sandwich and just take the loss. I wouldn't come back nor would I recommend a friend to try it

The roast turkey subs were huge- with thinly shaved turkey packed in so full- and my kids ate every last bite. I ordered "The Italian" as it was the special, and it was so delicious! It has their homemade Italian dressing, salami, hot capicola, and provolone. I re-ordered it again! My mom also ordered several desserts: house made cannolis, banana bread pudding, oreo cookie mousse, tiramisu, and chocolate mousse cake. Everything was wonderful! I really liked the banana bread pudding. The real gem was the chocolate mousse cake, which was so amazing that we ordered more slices in our next orders.

Delicious gourmet sandwiches - the March monthly special veggie sandwich, The Truth hit the spot!…read moreThe sandwich shop is tucked inside The Gatsby hotel with only indoor solo seating on cozy bar stools with a window view and some outdoor seating in front of the stadium. It's primarily a take-out shop with a dozen or sandwiches and a few sides. The Truth veggie sandwich was bursting with flavor with sweet potato, crispy eggplant, juicy portobello mushoroom, and creamy lentil aioli stuffed between whole wheat bread. It was so good that I didn't even miss not cheese! Initially, I thought about adding cheese, but glad I didn't and stuck with the classic sandwich. By the time I made it through a couple of bites of the 2nd half of my sandwich, I was stuffed and didn't have any room or a craving for chips or fries that I typically get. It was a simple sandwich with quality ingredients made well. Crossing my fingers that the veggie The Truth sandwich stays on the menu and looking forward to coming back to try other sandwiches!

The pickle bar had dry sauerkraut and the pickles were mushy. Got home 8 hours ago and I'm still sick as a dog. My wife ordered her regular turkey sandwich with Russian dressing- turkey is always dry but this tasted old, old and dry. She threw out the 1/2 sandwich she couldn't eat. The deli has a small dining area for patrons. My interaction with the staff was limited, but they were friendly enough. I ordered a steak and cheese sub. It was ready pretty quickly, in less than 5 minutes. The sub was ok. I felt that it had less meat than other steak-and-cheese sandwiches I had. It was also cooler than I expected. The meat was lukewarm. It had a little spice, which I liked. But outside of that, I did not like the flavor. The sub came with a pickle, which looked very sick. It tasted even sicker. Hi everyone, just wanted to leave a review of German Gourmet on Columbia Pike…read more Before I begin, I want to identify what the ingredients are for a classic Reuben. You'll need two slices of seeded or marble rye bread, about six ounces of thinly sliced corned beef or pastrami, two slices of sharp Swiss cheese, roughly a quarter cup of well-drained sauerkraut, and two tablespoons of Russian or Thousand Island dressing. A little butter for toasting the bread and optional spicy brown mustard round it out. That said, what I actually received was the absolute worst Reuben I've ever had in my entire life. They used ham instead of corned beef or pastrami, an insult to the name. The Swiss was bland and low-quality, not sharp at all. There was no mustard, barely any Thousand Island, and I couldn't even detect any sauerkraut. The bread wasn't toasted, and they still charged me $12.50 with tax. If this is what passes for a Reuben at a supposed German delicatessen, save your money and go somewhere that actually knows what they're doing.
