3.5 stars Stopped in to grab a few things and some sandwiches. They stock some nice prepackaged items, nothing seemed to have a price tag which is annoying, but prices overall were ok for dry goods. Got a couple things from their deli and sandwiches, which overall feel overpriced. Italian sandwich was ok, but small for $16 and the bread needs to soak up a ton of the dressing. The reuben was decent and the better of the two. Also ordered empanadas which were pretty good, but $6 each is crazy. read more

I've been going here for over a decade and the quality has taken a nose dive while the prices have skyrocketed. They will now charge $20 for dry unseasoned sandwiches. Their baked goods are not good - same with their prepared foods, all while being very overpriced. Went to their location on MacArthur right after they opened and they didn't have a menu prepared yet so the cashier just made up a price for my plain turkey sub and charged me $18.50. When I asked where they got this price they gave a vague roundabout answer and would not budge on lowering it. Very sad because my family has been supporting this place since I was little. Rarely leave reviews but I've loved this place as a staple in the neighborhood. I love going to Wagshal's for my late lunch/ early dinner break. Sure the sandwiches are a bit on the pricier side, like $16 for tuna melt. And it was very crunchy due to over abundance of celery that gave it a rather astringent taste. BUT, the service is friendly, and the turnaround time was great! I loved the steak and cheese sandwich I got a few days ago using DoorDash and can't wait to try other items they offer. Their cake displays were incredible looking too. And the empanadas. They keep expanding their offerings and increasing prices, yet so much of it is absolute crap. Been going here for 30 years. It's a sad state of affairs. I still go in for about 4 different things, knowing I'll pay too much, but that I'll like it. Anytime I try something new, or something I haven't had from them in a while, it's a total failure. $16 for an Italian sub? Fine, but better be good. Or at least edible. Yet, they included brown/grey salami on it. Major sign of epic managerial failure. They need to wake the f up, or they'll be burnt toast just like too many of their breakfast sandwhiches. They didn't tell us some things were "out" - they just never brought them, and then offered to take it off the bill. Really?! I wish I'd come here first to read the recent reviews. This is not the deli I used to stop in for sandwiches as a local undergrad. To be fair, it was more than 20 years ago - but that does not negate how awful it was today. My Ruben was lackluster at best. For $17 I expected the meat portion to reflect that price point. It did not. Then to top it off, the corned beef itself was just ok and there was waaaay too much sauerkraut for the amount of meat on the bread, throwing the sandwich proportions all Off. Wagshal's is a D.C. institution. It's been around for decades serving Washington, D.C. residents including several former U.S. presidents. It's since expanded to several locations and this one is in Spring Valley in Northwest D.C. close to the Maryland border. It's in an old strip mall and a stone's throw from Wagshal's Market. This location is spacious and sells a variety of groceries from wine, grab-n-go items, bread, etc. They sell breakfast, lunch, and dinner items from a stand within the shop. In the mornings, they sell bagels, pastries, and coffee. I recommend their chocolate croissant. read more

I ordered a dinner for my husband and I to be delivered tonight at 5:45. When it had not arrived by 6:15 I contacted the company that delivers the food and was told that it was cancelled by the driver! No one called me and I have no idea how that is even ok. They tried to contact Wagshalls and noone answered. So then I called Waghalls and was put on hold and disconnected. I called back again and the chef answered. I explained the situation and he said he would get back to me. I never heard back. This is totally unacceptable. I am so disappointed in Wagshall's. We never had dinner. read more

I went and order fries and ask to cook them soft, not crunchy. When I received them and went back to work (only 2 minute walk), the fries we hard and very crunchy. This is the second review I have wrote about different issues at this place. And they charge 6.05 for the fries, my co-worker tried them and spit them out. Been here before sort of a hit or miss with the prepared foods but I got the chicken empanada and the cucumber tomato salad with a side of pita chips. The empanada wasn't really good more on the doughy side and the flavor was eeehhh. The cucumber salad was good although the empanada wasn't great it complemented well with the salad. Do not rely on this business' employees to know what they have in their stores. They gave me incorrect information over the phone and I wasted my time and money ubering there for nothing. I wasted $70 and 1.5 hours of my life ubering to this place after they confirmed over the phone that they had haggis (the Scottish food) in stock, only to have the staff act like they didn't know what I was talking about when I arrived. I specifically asked about this product, I specifically confirmed the location to make sure I went to the right store, and I had them repeat it to make absolutely sure they had it, and they were totally clueless. Absolutely unprofessional. I have no idea what I could have done differently to avoid this. The woman who answered the phone left me on hold for fifteen minutes while she went and checked, and verbally confirmed to me over the phone that they had it. Gourmet deli and market with a sandwich bar and decent wine selection in the Spring Valley Shopping Center. There are a few tables outside as well as a nice enclosed dining space in the back. It is our neighborhood go-to for breakfast and lunch sandwiches, prepared deli treats, and last-minute wine or appetizer purchases for easy entertaining. I much prefer the ambiance of this location to the one on New Mexico Ave. It has a comforting, neighborhood feel. The prices are certainly on the high side, but the selection is pretty upscale and it's not outside what you would expect for the area. Service can be mixed, but all in all I've had a positive experience with staff going out of their way to help out. My only complaint would be the organization of the store, which can make it confusing to know where to pick up and pay for things. For example, you can order sandwiches and pay at the counter across from the sandwich bar, but if your order includes a deli item you have to separately bring your paper order receipt over to the deli for them to know to prepare your item and then pay for your order at the deli counter (but don't forget to go back to the sandwich counter to pick up your sandwich). I think it's exacerbated by the arrows on the floor which indicate the direction of traffic (as a COVID precaution) but can be tricky to navigate in a small space. However, I appreciate the efforts made to help customers keep 6 feet apart so that's not something I mind. I also appreciate the easy curbside pick up they are offering right now. This review is mostly for the deli side. The market is in a separate space a few doors down. I haven't been frequently enough to review it, but have friends who come from outside the neighborhood to its butcher counter. It seems quite the institution. read more

I ordered their brisket sandwich. Pure gristle, basically inedible. I was with a friend whom I hadn't seen for a long time so I didn't make an issue on the spot. I just ate the fries. The following day I brought it to their attention sending to both emails for the New Mexico Ave location. Totally ignored my messages. Nice small but quite fancy grocery store in a quiet residential neighborhood carrying items you might not get elsewhere. Good place to grab a coffee/tea and have some pastries - when they have mocha butter cream cake by the slice it's the best. This review is for the Chef Trini's pop up. Worst doubles I've ever had in my life. The barra was too thick and had the wrong flavors, chickpeas were not seasoned well, the dish is supposed to be served with a pepper sauce but there was nothing spicy on the plate. The "chutney" they gave me was Thai sweet sauce, which has no place in a trini dish. This dish is clearly for people that don't know any better. The server was nice but they are clearly understaffed, and for a to go order, there was miscommunication between him and the kitchen. Never again. Do not go here for Trini food. I'm giving Wagshal's 3 stars based on the very good French toast and omelets that my friends and I had for brunch one Sunday. Good coffee, too. I would have given 4 stars -- except it took 30 minutes from being seated with menus at the table to actually have food in front of us (coffee did come within 5 minutes). In a half-empty restaurant. I feel like they need to speed that up a bit (though the waitress was certainly pleasant and friendly). In the end, though, since we were not in a rush, and just chatting over coffee, we did enjoy our time at Wagshal's, and our food. read more

Sadly, Wagshal's has deteriorated in quality. Used to get a decent corned beef sandwich, for example. Now the meat comes shredded( chipped beef?) and very salty but little flavor. The rye bread , which used to be delicious and flavorful, is even more tasteless. What a shame . read more

Very expensive. I use to buy D'Artagnan Tasso ham from Wegmans. It has been discontinued for at least 18 months. Called D'Artagnan and they told me the closet place to purchase was DC. I went and purchased the Tasso gem but it was almost double the price for what I use to pay at Wegmans. read more

I know my tuna salad. I also know that the best tuna salad sandwich I've ever had--and possibly the best sandwich I've ever had in general--was at Wagshal's. Located just 0.3 miles from American University on Massachusetts Ave, this crowd pleasing deli offers a vast menu of sandwiches, candies, and tantalizing baked goods for fairly reasonable prices. The options are virtually endless; the toppings list at the sandwich bar goes on and on. Service was not too quick but not terribly slow either. The atmosphere in the small but cosy dining room is quite festive. Whether on a bagel, sourdough, or pumpernickel, I will most certainly return to Wagshal's for more great sandwiches. read more

The sausage for the egg sandwich is also microwaved but barely warm. The cheese barely melts. The Kaiser roll is greasy and nasty. A deli of this type, which has an adjoining restaurant, should have a griddle and cook the sandwiches to order. If I didn't arrive hypoglycemic and hangry OR known how expensive they were going to be I would've stopped the process and refused the sandwiches. I hit up Wagshal's for their "famous" pastrami, and don't feel it measures up to any such praise. Not piled high, but a reasonable amount and moderately flavorful. It just seemed to be missing something. Could have been more juicy and flavorful, but I'm not under the impression that they really care either way. It's also expensive for a deli sandwich that doesn't even include a drink and chips. If you're a local student, they will give $1 off per sandwich with student ID. read more

Today we ordered sandwiches for pickup. We are big fans of the sandwiches here and we're very excited. Unfortunately, when we got home we were a sandwich short! I called the deli to complain and as soon as I explained my issue I was told said "I'm going to make this right". They delivered us a replacement sandwich and an apple crumb pie! Their sandwiches are good. Chicken noodle is fabulous. Service is hit or miss. Ordering out and getting your order right is hit or miss. Ice cream is re-frozen flavored water. Desserts are meh. Their halibut had a ton of scales in it. Their steak is decent. Their crab cakes are too salty. We've had most types of meat from their butcher and a lot of it is a disappointment. To be honest, their reputation precedes them and we've lived here long enough to try over and over again. The convenience is hard to beat. I really prefer not to go except for the chicken noodle. The butcher in dt bethesda and mclean are both more consistent in their quality. read more
