This is a nice place to go and grab a salad or sandwich. You don't really go for the food, more so the ambiance. Saturdays at lunch parking is just horrible, but the plus side is the Full Service gas station in the parking lot. This is a quaint little blast from the past coupled with the market, and deli. Everyone is super nice and they have lots of neat little finds. Specialty cookies, candy, and deli finds. I stop by when I'm in the area which is once a year. read more

Expensive-o, but you can find tons of stuff here. The deli is its high point, for sure, but I'd avoid it on busy days because the space can be stifling. Also, Wagshal's has one of the best bread selections I've ever seen. I've had some price disputes here in the past that, for the most part, keeps me at a distance. Popped in for a bottle of wine last night and went with a nice mid-range cab (Silver Palm) which typically retails somewhere between $16-18. The cashier said, "that'll be $32.50." Listen I'm all for paying a 2-3x markup on wine in a restaurant, but being bent over the counter when trying to support a local business is criminal. I promptly placed the bottle back on the shelf and opted for two cans of LaCroix. "That'll be $5.49." WTF. I fully realize CPI is up 7.5%, but this is highway robbery. I could literally buy a 12-pack of LaCroix for the same price at any grocery store in America. TL;DR Wagshal's pricing makes Millie's $14 Frose' look like a bargain. Unless you want to feel like Jodie Foster in "The Accused," you're better off elsewhere. read more

Way overpriced sandwich. First came out burnt bread. Sent it back then came back barely toasted. Looks like the toasters have been around for decades. Then getting nickel and dimed for every ingredient. No chips included. Nor fries. Just pickles. Not much to write home about - for fifteen dollars. Not even a water. read more

I came in this store to get something to eat after leaving the hospital from getting chemo, I have lung cancer which causes me to have breathing problems I didn't wear one going into the store and I bought chicken salad to eat. When I went to my car and tried it, the chicken tasted really old and terrible so I went to the store to switch it out for something else. When I was standing in line one of the mangers the tall white dark hair guy came to me very disrespectfully and told me to leave and tried to push me in the store when I tried to show him and tell about my medical card and my medical conditions he said he didn't care what my health issues were I was walking out with my chicken salad he tried to yang it out of my hand and yelled in the store in front of customers saying I stole it then he acted like he wanted to hit me. So i had to have a family member come back in the store to say something to the manger and the way he acted towards me and treated me and asked like he wanted to hit me when he raised his hand and arm at me. The employees wouldn't go get him. So finally someone switched out the chicken salad for the shrimp salad they gave me so little not even the amount I actually spent on the chicken salad, they gave it to me dry and barely any of the sauce on it. Those employees and manger did me so wrong and disrespectful. How can you treat a customer like that instead of be I guess respectful you raise your voice at a customer in front of every other customer in the store instead of pulling me to the side and speaking with me. I than called customer service and talked to the owner and he didn't give NO FUCKS ABOUT THE WAY I WAS TREATED AND DIDNT CARE ABOUT MY MEDICAL ISSUES EITHER THEN HE RAISED HIS VOICE AT ME ON THE PHONE AND TRIED TO ARGUE WITH ME. WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS IS THIS YOU DONT GET NO RESPECT FROM ANYONE IN THIS PLACE NOT EVEN THE OWNER WHO TRIED TO SAY HE HAD CANCER 5 mins later who also said he didn't care about my conditions. Wagshal's is a perfectly acceptable artisan grocery and deli that has a cult status in NW DC. I've been going to Wagshal's for the better part of a decade. Service is always friendly, and they feature a broad range of sandwich options, hot bar, and sides to suit your needs. Eclectic cheese and beer options make it a fun spot to pick up snacks and bring them home. That said, the place is always packed, and service timelines and accuracy can suffer. Check your order! I've had items cheerfully replaced when missed, but that's after checking afterwards. The prices tend to skew to the high side, and it's a madhouse most days. read more

First time there, (1) wearing AU T-shirt, (and btw, they are located next to AU) (2) carrying a laptop and a Timbuk2 bag, I hand her my credit card, and she rings me up. Then I see the tiny little $1 off card for GW, GT and AU students. She just shrugs and goes, oops, next time hun. Next time!??!?! Sure, it's only a dollar, but it's the principal of the thing. Come on lady, it's just four quarters, the equivalent of like 12 minutes on the meter outside my apartment, I'd give more to the lady who stands outside St. Matthews and asks me for change on my way to the Y. Alright, that aside, I finally succumbed to my hunger yesterday, and walked in, TBLT, $5.99 (and you bet I remembered my card...god I'm a cheap prick but hey, DC is pricy and you don't get that much when you eat out) and you know what, the TBLT was f*ing awesome. Cajun spices, generous serving of bacon and tilapia....Enjoyed it all the way to Baltimore, driving stick with my knees. (as opposed to working a stick on your knees, check out DuPont for that type of action) They would have received four stars if they gave me a fork, or a spork or even a damn tooth pick with my cucumber onion salad. Wagshals is good, but they're a tad cheap. Great prices on low -to-moderate-end vodka and other liquor. You know, the stuff people around the 20016 wouldn't take a second look at if they were dying of thirst in the desert. read more

I was just in Wagshalls, on April 10th, 2020. I was appalled that most of the employees were NOT wearing masks. I even asked an employee why they were not wearing a mask and they just looked at me. It makes me wonder if they are not practicing hygienic protocol during a pandemic, what are their hygiene practices when things are more lax. I love Wagshal's! What a perfect deli with a wonderful selection of sandwiches, salads, and other sides. In addition to the deli portion, Wagshal's also has a nice selection of beverages, hot foods (meat, rice, lasagnas, and other pastas), and a terrific array of fresh desserts! I cannot rave enough about this place. My personal favorite is the #25, the roast beef sandwich with coleslaw and Russian dressing. The sandwiches are very affordable, delicious, and decently portioned. In addition to their sandwiches, I have also had several types of salads from Wagshal's - I have tried the tuna salad, the chicken salad, the noodle salad, the fruit salad, and the potato salad. I will have to try the shrimp salad sometime. The salads are very fresh and are sold by the pound (or fraction thereof). Also, try their homemade twinkies! They're incredibly fresh and inexpensive. Wagshal's really has it all - the delicious food, the great variety, the very reasonable prices, and the quaint homey feel of a deli market. I cannot stress enough how amazing Wagshal's is and I will make the most of my time getting to eat there. read more

Weird store ---- strange layout which lends to an uncomfortable vibe. Couldn't wait to get the heck out of this place! It's also really small & somewhat cramped. Anyhow... about the food, ordered an egg on a bagel & was told their eggs are baked, but cooked through. Well, when I got home.... my mouth watering & all, I realized the egg was not cooked through & was runny. Ugh! I don't eat uncooked eggs so I had to move on to Plan B for dinner... Georgetown Bagelry off River Road; they know how to make an egg sandwich. YIKES!!!! FOOD POISONING!!! I got a slice of seared tuna for dinner last night and it was spoiled. At $19.99 a pound, one would think they'd make it fresh daily. They claim that they do, but believe me, folks, they do not!!! I was up all night with a horrible stomach ache and everything else that comes with food poisoning. I had one bite of the tuna and thought it tasted funky; second bite and I knew it was funky at which point I stopped eating it. I can't imagine what would have happened to me if I had eaten the entire serving. In addition, I waited to be served while four people behind the counter ignored me, chatted and cleaned the back area. After about 4 minutes someone had the gall to ask me if I needed help. Really!! No joke. No, I wanted to say, I came to watch your performance. All I wanted was my tuna so that I could go home. read more

A couple changes from my last visits, but overall, same experience of a good deli with everything but the sandwiches being very overpriced. (see prior review) The menu is now on easy to read vertical flat panel displays. They now let you pay for your sandwich while it is being made! (finally) Even though there are 5 people behind the counter, you still wait around for a while just to get someone to take your order. It isn't very clear where the order line is vs. the people standing around waiting to pickup. I got the TBLT (Tilapia BLT). The tilapia was a fried thin piece of shoe leather. I think the menu said it was grilled...so perhaps it was breaded and grilled, but it was a challenge to bite either way. (EDIT -when brought to the management's attention they were immediately concerned and said the fish shouldn't have been served. So yours may be better.) Way too much mayo for me, but the bread, bacon and veggies were excellent! If you are short on time, below the order counter is a box that has two types of grab-and-go sandwiches (Cold Cut and something else). $10 I didn't notice any of the unfriendly service folks have mentioned. At least 3 people asked me if I needed help with anything while I was in there. There is a small counter to eat at and tables outside. Again, some great liquor bottles I'd pick up if they weren't so marked-up. I think your best bet is to just grab the sandwich and get your drink/chips/side somewhere else. Or have water. I love this place, eat here all the time. There is the restaurant and the deli/market both in the same building, there's a separate market in the same shopping center, and there are other locations. The restaurant and deli/bakery at the Mass Ave location are really great. First of all, you have to be flexible. I saw the review about calling first if you want something specific because they were "sold out", and i have to agree that they don't really follow their own list of specials, so there are surprises and inconsistencies. But, as long as you know that going in, you can be ready. The staff is INCREDIBLY nice and they will substitute almost anything and customize orders, the chef is super nice, and you can tell they love their jobs which makes the customer experience better. They also have an international influence so the menu items can be interesting and different, but you still get the typical stuff if that's what you like. The crab cakes are awesome, so I very strongly recommend those both in the restaurant and the market. The reuben is also delicious. But they have lots of comfort food dishes too that are more homestyle, like beef burgundy and chicken parm, and these are delicious, freshly made and keep things interesting. They always have sauteed vegetables you can get on the side, consistently fresh and good. And the homemade salad dressings are good too, the lemon ginger vinaigrette is my fave (don't get the ranch I think the creamy ones are not homemade). They always serve fresh bread and butter, and the bread is always changing so we've been able to try a lot of different kinds of bread, all were delicious, the potato bread and the sun dried tomato were the best, in fact we ordered a loaf to take home. The pizza is delicious, plenty of cheese which is a pet peeve of mine. The pizza is big enough for two people, possibly three depending on how hungry you are. As to dessert, they have a bakery with lots of choices. LOTS. I have to recommend the chocolate explosion. It's a hostess cupcake on steroids. It's KILLER and they do actually sell out of it so you can't always get it. In fact, I eat it too fast so I never get a chance to take a photo. You can also just go and browse the bakery before you order. Lastly, it's a great value, the meals are not expensive, entrees come with salad, so you don't break the bank for a high quality meal. If I could give this zero stars I would. Three of us stopped in for breakfast in the restaurant yesterday. I have to say, it was absolutely the worst breakfast I have ever paid for. And, the service was terrible. We waited for a very long time for a simple breakfast of eggs and toast. I ordered a cup of tea. When the waitress poured the water for the tea from a carafe it was brown. I had to point it out to at her and she went and got me a new cup of hot water. She said somebody must not have cleaned the carafe. When the food finally came out it was all cold. The toast was so dry it was like crackers. One of the 3 of us did not get any toast although it was ordered. Then when we asked her for that person's toast, she bought the wrong kind of bread. I would not call the home fries m, home fries. It was a small patty of mush together potatoes. The latkes that we ordered as one side, look like they came from a frozen package. The side of Canadian bacon was cold and dry. When I said something to the waitress, she did offer to send it back, but we are already sat and waited so long, and one of us had a class to go to, so we could not wait for another whole set of food. All three platters of food were uniformly terrible. There is no other way to describe it. A complete waste of money. read more

Sandwiches are great due to the quality of the ingredients, but deli service is problematic. In the past, they confused names at time of pickup. Today we ordered two sandwiches and cole slaw over the phone and confirmed the order. 10 minutes later, they hadn't started on the order and it took another 15 for it to be provided. Really expensive but also really good. If you're a first timer I recommend looking at their menu and figuring out what kind of sandwich you want before you step inside as it can get really busy regardless of whether it's lunchtime on a weekday or some random time on the weekend. The menu can be a lot to take in especially when you have an eager pack of famished Range Rover drivers behind you who want their sandwich stat. As for the sandwiches the Reuben and Adam's Special (roast beef, sauerkraut, mustard, swiss) are my favorites. I've also tried their daily special sandwiches on occasion and have never been disappointed. Aside from the price of course. Even when they're busy they still get the sandwiches out pretty quickly all things considered. If you want something else either wait for your sandwich to be ready then explore or hurry and get whatever else you want right after you order, as people have accidentally taken my sandwich while I was looking at other goodies. Wow -- I am floored by this place, and NOT in a good way. The management has completely ruined my perspective on this restaurant. My family has come here for years, since it's opening, and we were aware that the ownership changed hands a few years back, but didn't realize how much it had gone downhill ever since the Fuchs brothers took over. We went in for the advertised "bottomless mimosa" brunch, which includes bottomless mimosas and a dish of your choice off of the food menu. We arrived around 11:00. There were VERY few customers in there, which I thought was surprising given that it was a holiday weekend and brunch is a popular time of day for restaurants. When we first got our water glasses, one was dirty and stained with lipstick. Yuck! We were not served any beverages until 11:40am. The food came shortly thereafter. It was decent, but not spectacular. I found a black thread (not a hair...but something with a similar texture to it) on my plate of food. Around 12:00, after we had had our drinks refilled once, we asked for another round of mimosas and were refused by our server. He claimed that there was a limit on the mimosas and that we could not have anymore, despite having purchased the advertised bottomless. I've heard of time limits on serving... but one hour? And not to mention after a long delay before any drinks came from the get go? If there's a four drink limit, shouldn't this be disclosed from the start? Not to mention the 35 minutes we waited for our drinks to arrive the first time... When I asked to speak with the manager, he refused to give his name and provided no explanation for why we were not being served anymore drinks aside from that "this is the limit." After doing some research of my own, I found out this person is Brian Fuchs, a son of the new owner. He was rude, disrespectful, and untrustworthy. When I called him to follow up, he accused me of being "belligerent" and threatening him when I said I was going to post a negative review about my experience. I now understand why there were barely any customers in Wagshals when I arrived, and quite literally none as I was leaving. The service is incredibly poor and slow, with false advertisements and rude staff (like server Emily and manager Brian). What a true disappointment. This establishment used to be good, since the 1960s, and it has clearly fallen apart due to poor management. Completely disgraceful showing by the management at Wagshals; we will not be dining here again and hope to discourage others as well. read more

I have been going to Wagshal's since I was a little kid, and consistently go every time I am back in town. We always get sliced pastrami, corned beef, marbled rye, and potato knishes. I highly recommend a visit for an authentic jewish deli nestled in a quiet neighborhood in DC. They have outdoor tables to sit at when the weather is nice and the service is always friendly. read more

So we order two reubens. A pretty quick thing to make, when I order at my downtown deli, this takes about 3-4 minutes to get. We waited for 22 minutes (I timed it). They weren't busy, and had over a dozen people 'working' there at the time. We almost asked to cancel our order it had been so long. They've gone downhill. Wagshal's, in my opinion, is passing fair. It is not dreadful; neither is it terrific. Maybe I am comparing it to one of the great NYC delis, but that is what the area needs, not more "not bad" ones. The quality of its high-priced meats may also be skewing my view. We used to use them for meals for special occasions. I was disappointed the first time I was buying some after a rather long time, and the disappointment was amazing. It just is not the butcher shop it used to be when the Wagshals still owned. It's not easy to review Wagshal's as I have probably shopped there a couple hundred times and it is a mixed bag. Here are my favorite things about the place, then, my less so: Favorite Things: #1 - The STAFF. Great Management - you have Stephan who runs the wines and ordering of items, he is a sweet, slightly grumpy (not at you just you know like a seven dwarf kinda friendly grumpy) guy who is, if you ask me, massively overqualified for his job. Look for him with anything interesting like putting together a special menu for a party. He basically runs the place. The guy went to culinary school. If you come up with a menu or food questions, be prepared for thorough assistance. He will find EXACTLY the thing you need, and knows the place like the back of his hand. Gifts? Ask Stephan. Special event? Ask Stephan. and so on, this guy is really sharp, talented and a gem. You also have Jorge who I love. He is this smiling fellow who runs all the food operations in terms of sandwiches and etc. Very nice, upbeat, and very helpful, always brightens my day. The rest of the staff, Maria and everyone else are awesome too. The bakery is delicious. Love the rugulah, cakes and all the breads. In terms of lunch items, I am partial to the nicoise salad on the new side and the greek salad on the old side, all the sandwiches are good but I am not a fan of the crabcake, too bready. The reason I don't give 5 stars is the owner. The woman is nice, but the guy is not. He hires well, but is unpleasant. The old owners sat in front of my family in a private organization for years and were really warm, sweet people, but this guy, he just seems mean and he was quite rude and defensive towards me over something I was happily ordering. I have witnessed his sour demeanor around the place and he'd be better off staying home. I have literally walked out when I saw his face just because he is so unpleasant. Additionally, it is overpriced. I know DC is new on the wave of culinary knowledge and Wagshals has great items that are hard to find out there, but it is still a bit overpriced. Not terribly, but a bit. But I go there regardless, and I bring guests from out of town, as it is an institution of sorts, good, casual, high quality food with a great staff! Every item handmade and they do get busy at lunch, so if you are tight on time, make sure you preorder or go when there is less of a rush. Oh, and they often have tastings for the wines in the early evening.Oh and another PS yes their matzoh ball soup is pretty much as effective as penicillin for a cold. read more

This is a great deli. For DC, it's an amaaaazing deli. The best in town. I get sandwiches from here all the time. They have always gotten my order right (except for ignoring my "no pickle" instructions). Love the corned beef. Portions are huge. The brisket sandwich is really, really good. I have never gotten a stomach ache from eating here and I get stomach aches all the time, so this says a lot to me for how they use proper sanitation. Wish they would get their Eaglebucks machine fixed. Wish they wouldn't have given me stale marble bread that one time. Other than that, no complaints. A sandwich from Wagshal's will come through in a clutch -- if you're in the area and really hungry. I would suggest the roasted turkey or roast beef, those are the best I've had at this place. The neighborhood is wonderful, and it's not hard to find parking. I guess this place was once a glorious, respected deli, but now I doubt that few outside of the neighborhood know about it. There's very little seating here and it's crowded at lunchtime. I haven't had any bad experiences with the staff members, but I've heard about their crankiness more than once so it must be true. read more
