Belgian Cafe Bruges (I'll bet you pronounce it wrong) is what you get when someone made a wrong turn at NYC and ended up in Carlisle - and thankfully so. Belgian is a culinary experience, and the Flemish part has some very decent dishes - but those beers, those are the things that most people find out about the hard way haha. I'm not much of a beer guy but I do love me some moules frites and Steak Frites or really, just about anything and frites... and the Belgians have perfected these dishes - and so have the fine folks at Cafe Bruges. I had to wait until later in the week as it does not open until Wednesday. I popped in on a Thursday and there were plenty of seats at the bar - perfect. The bartender was there to greet me and she set me up with some menus and gave me a few moments to decide on a drink. As beer is not really my thing, i found a decent glass of Côtes du Rhône to get started with. The menu is decent sized and I wasn't completely famished, so I went straight for the steak frites. Myself, a fellow diner sitting next to me, and the bartender (her name was Brooke, by the way) decided it should be med / rare in case the kitchen was off by a level. Turns out the kitchen was spot-on with the medium rare, and this bad boy was just fabulous both in the way it was cooked and seasoned. We came here for a work dinner and everyone ordered steak frites! It was so good, I can't wait to have my leftovers. I did try to make reservations, but they only take reservations for parties of 6 or more. It was pretty loud, which I was surprised by, but once we got settled it got easier to hear everyone. A friend and me had lunch at Cafe Bruges today. Boy that place has gone to shit both food and atmosphere wise. Their version of moules-frites was like trying to chew and eat greasy slivers of river rock. Of course, room temp salad w limpy salad greens and mushy, sticky tomatoes is always a delight. To top it all was our creepy male server (Jeremy?) playing grab ass w a table of chunky middle-aged women adding to an already unpleasantly loud dining experience. My dinner was not good but I'm trying to be fair and rate the overall experience and all the food at the table. Let's start with the beer. An amazing selection of Belgium beers, even on tap. A minor disappointment when several selections were out and when you order something that wasn't under the "on draft" section and it still came out in a glass rather than the bottle with a glass. Easy to overlook when we didn't have to wait too long for drinks and the beer was wonderful. The table decided to forgo the apps so let's get right to the mains. Starting with the good, the Moules Frites were fantastic and everything you'd expect from a Belgium restaurant. The Waterzooi, a creamy stew of fish, shrimp and scallops was the surprise of the table. Excellent choice but needed something to sop up all the creamy sauce at the end. Should have gotten a side of frites but was talked out of it. Oh well. Don't want to side step the fries. They are cooked wonderfully and served hot. Nice mayo dipping options too. They are a little short. Too short to be served in a traditional cone. The biggest disappointment was the steak frites. The steaks were cooked to order to perfection (one medium and one medium rare). The issue is they were tough as a board. Still can't fathom how it is possible to cook a piece of meat to a perfect medium rare and it cuts, chews and tastes like shoe leather. Terrible. Must be a lousy cut of beef. The atmosphere is loud and tables are close together but it is not terrible. Service is attentive from seating to check but I don't think anyone in the place smiled once. I just love the beer hall vibe here. It's not fancy, but always such a good time. Expect a loud, family-friendly, beer-forward place with friendly (if not busy staff) when you come here. I would never say that it is quick service, but it is always a great time! I can't really tell you about anything else but the currywurst and the mussels because honestly... If you are getting anything else on the menu, you are doing it wrong ... also, getting the frites with the curry catchup...catsup...ketchup... however you spell that word, IS.A.MUST! What a wonderful place to have a bite. My wife and I visit about once or twice a month and they never disappoint. Ask to be seated in Jeremy's section. He is an amazing server. Drinks never go empty, always comes by at just the right time. Really knows how it's done. Excellent service. The frites are AMAZING. Double fried so very crispy and crunchy without being overdone. Many dipping sauces to choose from. I prefer the mustard mayonnaise. My wife always gets the mussels appetizer. Always good. Mussels are their specialty. Cafe Bruges is hands down our favorite restaurant. The food is amazing, we recommend the Mussels Bruges style, the Steak Frites, and The Sweet Waffle. The beer selection is second to none. I am personally a fan of Golden Draak 9000 on tap, and keep them coming!!! The owner/chef is fantastic and is willing to come out of the kitchen to discuss beer, the menu, or the glassware that matches your beer selection. Our favorite server is Jeremy. I finally got to try this place for lunch and was very pleased with the experience. The beer selection is great and I was very excited to see Chimay on draft! The inside is typical pub vibes with dark wood accents. They also have a patio and the tables have umbrellas--it looks like a cute area. I ordered a burger with a salad as a side. The quality of the meat was excellent. The burger was super juicy, had a nice amount of toppings, and the homemade mayo was fabulous. I also really enjoyed the shallot vinaigrette dressing on the salad. My husband orderd a pork schnitzel with the fries--yes yes yes to this dish! I love schnitzel, but not many places do this dish. The mushroom gravy on it was creamy & rich. The breading on the pork was divinely crispy. Mmm. The fries are double-fried in beef tallow, so there are no complaints here. We decided to give the restaurant a try during Carlisle's ice fest! It was extremely busy, and after a little wait, we were able to get a table. The server came over quickly and took our drinks and appetizer order. We ordered the roasted brussels sprouts, which were outstanding! My friend and I both ordered the sirloin burger with a side of frites. The burgers were cooked to order and the frites were crispy and delicious! Upon arriving, we were quickly seated. Waited a few minutes for our server to bring water, but wasn't long. Just enough time to look over menus and figure out what we wanted. Plenty of beer & sours on tap and a full menu of beverages to choose from. Just be careful, some of these are really strong and you can get wasted before even getting an appetizer. Loved the cherry lambic and Flemish sour. The frites were delicious and so rich. I'm guessing from being fried in beef tallow. The lamb burger was wonderfully seasoned and perfectly portioned. Only downside was I asked for medium and it came out well done which put it on the drier side than I like. The carbonnade was sooooo good. The beef was so tender and rich in flavor from being braised in beer. The potatoes were so full of flavor from being in the stew. I just wished they gave a little more of the beef because it was so good. Had plenty of gravy left so put some frites in there and finished it off. Overall very happy with the lunch. Atmosphere is very nice too. Busy, but not so much that you can't converse with your party. Food was very delish! I came to Carlisle for 2 weeks and this place was recommended. My group of about 20 people or so were well accommodated and despite the size of the group, I thought the server was very attentive. I had the fish because I wanted to be more healthy. Normally I don't eat fish, but I was pleasantly surprised. The salmon was soft and it didn't have a super fishy taste. I thought the asparagus was a nice addition too. read more

This used to be our hands down favorite restaurant in Carlisle. We havent been there for a while and tonight 12/28/23 was our first time back. The food used to be excellent, but has gone downhill. I had the currywurst appetizer with fries. The wurst was sliced like thick pepperoni, and cooked until it was far overdone. Half the order of fries were very overcooked and the oil was way overdue to be changed. My wife ordered mussels and they were sandy from not being rinsed and prepped properly. I also ordered a sirloin burger, which was always great previously, this time, the burger was way smaller than the bun, and the bun seemed like it had been in a warming drawer all day. I ordered it medium, and while it was pink, it was also dry. Another member of our party had a chicken sandwich that was unbelievably greasy. We will more than likely come back, but probably wait a while in the hopes that the current management or cooks move on. read more

OK, so my husband and I needed a quick dinner in Carlisle and this was convenient and closeby where we are visiting. First of all, it looked closed from the street (first sign). Second, the hostess who was checked out and distracted, sat us in a near empty restaurant so that I was 6" from a man seated at the bar. I was so close, I had to sit at an angle to avoid bumping him. Why she thought that was where to seat us, idk. Third, we ordered sandwiches and fries since we only had an hour and it seemed like it took at least a half hour for a burger and a toasted cheese (croque monsieur) and the fries were fried beyond recognition and they were in little pieces. My sandwich was pure grease and my husband's burger was overcooked. Our waitress never came back to ask how the food was (although she did give me ketchup that I had to ask for). It is a hard NO. Do not waste your time or money on this place. They had alot of employees who tried to appear busy, but were not. It is not a good environment. read more

As a Dickinson alum, I absolutely love Bruges. You can't beat their burgers and my person favorite the modules and frites. The my two favorite sauces for the mussels are the Thai and the leek/bacon. There is also a great selection of sauces for the burgers and frites, I always go with the Asian mayo and the curry ketchup. The last time I went, June 2019, everything was delicious. The mussels were small and tender, the frites were crispy. My boyfriend and friend also enjoyed their burgers very much. The time before, was not quite as good. It was last year and the mussels were very big and a bit fishy tasting, I did not like them at all. I am glad my most recent visit was up to par. The moules frites Bruges style are quite good, and the fries are irresistible, but if that's not your thing, the beef stew, steak frites, sausages and salads are good as well. Cafe Bruges can be a little rough around the edges, so I wouldn't rank it among the great Belgian restaurants in a major restaurant city, but in Carlisle, it's a standout. read more

We had a delicious dinner at Cafe Bruges. My teenage son devoured his lamb burger - he didn't even put it back down on the plate once! My Bruges-style moules were delightful in their amazing broth, and the frites were truly as good as we had read in almost every other review. But the curry ketchup? How have we managed to survive up to this point without curry ketchup in our lives?! My husband orders salmon almost everywhere we go, but he decided to take a chance on the meatball as it was something different. He was not disappointed. We opted for a bowl of raspberry sorbet and a Belgian waffle for dessert. Both were fantastic. Even the end-of-meal mint was a touch above the normal fare!
