This place has character. It's ambiance reminiscent of a 70's sitcom where a group of old friends are going out on a special occasion. The service was spectacular and the food was very authentic. And my gosh, I can still taste the chocolate berry desert - I was in total shock when I tried the first bite and my friends were instantly jealous. Most of my friends got plentiful containers of muscles (while I was getting muscles through lean protein i.e. a tender piece of chicken. I'm not a huge seafood guy - but that's really what they're know for). I have to say I was very disappointed in the quality of the food and the taste. We have been coming to this restaurant for years and I will always say the service is wonderful. The servers are very attentive and patient but we continue to ask for the status of our food or drinks, that were ordered two different servers to check on the status more than once. Example, sugar, soda, dessert. I ordered the mussel appetizer which was baked and truly had no flavor with a lot of Parmesan cheese. My steak frittes was good and the fries were excellent. However, my friends mussels had a very strong wine taste overpowering , and she did not like them. my fiancé's rack of lamb tasted like you were eating like kerosene from the gas grill. He is a chef so he is taking them home and will have them tomorrow once he fixes them. For dessert we ordered the perifoles. The ice cream was very icy inside not creamy. I bragged how good this place was and I was hugely disappointed. I think it needs a little help. In terms of ambience, it's a quiet little restaurant, but my girlfriend had concern. They did not have the little forks to eat the mussels and by the end of the night the chairs were very uncomfortable. read more

Let me start by saying that I ADORE Belgian cuisine. Its hearty nature, especially with the change in seasons, brings on the cravings. So I was really optimistic to try Mannequin. This optimism was bolstered when upon our arrival encountered a table party speaking French. Let's start with the good. Attention to service was outstanding. The decor felt like stepping into a European bistro. The beer menu was extensive, and had a couple of my Belgian favorites. Then we got to the food, and all my built optimism collapsed. My wife's steak frites was almost flavorless. And to call the potatoes frites was an embarrassment. They were more akin to McDonalds fries. My seafood bisque was okay, but for a $50 plate I was expecting exceptional. Even the bread missed the mark. Although it's a much longer drive, next time I crave Belgian food I'm heading back up to Carlisle and Cafe Bruges. read more

Came in for dinner with my family because my dad was missing Belgium. Loved the fountain/sculpture of the mannequin pis outside! The interiors seem authentic to a restaurant in Belgium, though none of the employees spoke Dutch lol. I've been here multiple times and have had the mussels, salmon and steak. Truthfully, I was unimpressed with my food. It tasted like any ordinary American spot that would have these options. Nothing really stood out to me about these items. The only item that impressed me was their chocolate mousse in the dessert section - rich & not too sweet. I like that they have occasional menu specials based on holidays and celebrations. I will mention that their service staff are very thoughtful. I made a reservation indicating that we were celebrating a birthday, and for dessert we ordered ice cream and (without us even asking) the staff came out and sang happy birthday to my dad. Mannequin is a unique Belgium Restuarant. 3 of us ate here recently and really enjoyed it. Notable items were the potatoe leak soup, a kilo of province mussels, and the steak frites. All very good. The stew (highly discussed on other reviews) I found to have a great flavor; but the meat was not very tender and it contains no vegetables. Great selection of Belgium's beers and good wines. Our service was good. The Restuarant ambiance is like eating in an old WWII bar in Belgium. Nice place. We will be back to try some other dishes. read more

I finally got to try the Moules Bruxelles, and the mussels were tender and cooked to perfection, and the sauce was suburb and clearly homemade, with shreds of leeks and good quality bacon. The mussels come in a pot, and I recommend scooping out a load of mussels onto your plate, so you can ladle the sauce from the bottom of the pot on top of them. The French bread tasted homemade, too. I ordered a French Chardonnay which was very pleasant. We ordered the Profiteroles for dessert, and they were by far the best I've ever had. The pastry was light, airy, flaky, and likely made in house, and the ice cream and chocolate sauce were tasty, too. The service was attentive and respectful. So for the last 3 years we've been meaning to try this place. They have good reviews and it's local. I think I wasn't thrilled about the menu options. I don't really eat mussels or sausages, etc. BUT they have a lot more to offer on the menu. Sea bass, salmon, etc. We went for lunch and it was quaint and clean. I had a delicious salad- the mannequin pis salad and the lobster bisque. Very fresh and very good. I loved how the salad was assembled just right so that every bite was perfect. And they are known for their lobster bisque. My husband loves Delerium beer and they have plenty of that. Oh the fries! The garlic frites are a must. Came here on Mother's Day and was not disappointed!! Everything we ordered was delicious! My mom got the soft shell crab which was a Mother's Day special but she said it was so amazing she would order it again if it became a regular menu item! I had the Snob mussel pot and omg it was so good!!! Not to mention the garlic pomme frites I had with it which were perfectly crispy and seasoned to perfection! My dad got the salmon and my brother got the pork loins and they were both good as well. The mushroom ragout was amazing and the escargot was pretty good as well! What a cute charming little bistro! Came here for a birthday dinner with my mom recently and we had a lovely time. They seem to have a good selection of various Belgian beers, which isn't a style I know very well but we both enjoyed our selection. We shared a sausage appetizer, a big pot of mussels with a delicious, garlicky, herbal, creamy broth, bread to dip of course, and delicious fries. We were really looking forward to Mannequin Pis, and while it wasn't perfect it was enjoyable. The unique atmosphere of a true Belgian pub in the area is certainly worth a visit. Here's the details. Let's start with the beer menu. We love Belgian beers and if you do you will not be disappointed with the options. Really nice selection of Ales, Trappists, Lambics, etc. it's one of the few locations in the area you can dive into that type of beer selection, and it's a solid 5. On the food, the menu paired nicely with the beer selection. The steak-frites are solid, with a well seasoned cut of meat. The frites were unfortunately overly oily in flavor, and I'd say the oil was in need of a refresh. The Flemish Bier Stew was also solid. Tender cuts of meat, maybe just a bit under seasoned. And unfortunately again the old oil flavor of the frites overpowered the nice stew. We also had the Hawaiian mussels, delicious and a sauce you just want to sop up with bread and consume with a beer all night. Unfortunately even heavily seasoned garlic fries couldn't shake the flavor of the oil. I'm sure we'll go back again and see if it was just an off night with the fries. I have passed by this place many times, but had never been. I was able to visit it recently, left satisfied and would not mind checking it out again. I went with a group, so I already knew that since there were more than 5 of us, that an 18% gratuity would be added to our bills (I saw this information on their website before going to the restaurant). This is my experience and what I had: They have a Wine and Beer menu, but no Cocktail menu. As I only like Sweet Wines, they only had two to choose from, but I was able to get a taste before choosing one - Riesling and a Rose and based on the tastes, I would have settled on both, but had them pour a glass of Rose for this visit. I got their $34.99 dinner special which was 1 Appetizer, 1 Entrée and 1 Dessert. I think the employee stated that it was only done on Sundays to Thursdays, which worked out for us perfectly. For Appetizer, I had their Lobster Bisque and I really enjoyed it (would have that again). For Entrée, I had their Amish Chicken Breast - their menu listed it as Oven roasted Amish chicken breast with brussels sprouts, pomme croquettes in brandied cherry sauce. This chicken was not dry at all and I liked that - I ate it along with all the brussels sprouts (the chicken was not tough at all which was great). I probably didn't eat any of the pomme croquettes - can't tell you what that is, but it was the only thing left on my plate. For Dessert, I had their Bread Pudding - menu described it as a slice of warm bread pudding with raisins and crème anglaise, caramel sauce and topped with homemade whipped cream. Great bread pudding and it was definitely warm - I ate it more with the whipped cream (which was topped with a slice of strawberry). I did not like the taste of the sauce as it didn't blend well with the bread pudding, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the bread pudding. Overall, the company I was with was great - a few in our group had been before and many had mussel pots and enjoyed theirs. Another had the Sea Bass dish which looked so good. However they took at least 15mins before taking our order. The food took a while to prepare but it was delicious. I had a side order and the waiter forgot to put it in so I had to ask for it. If only they came around to ask how things were. I had the sea bass which was delicious. It paired well with the balsamic sauce and potatoes. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender and flavorful. The brussels were good too. The leek soup was creamy rich. I don't even like leek, but this thing was packed with flavor. I have driven by Mannequin Pis more times than I can count, but I've never noticed it. Its tucked in the plaza that's behind the plaza on the corner of Georgia Avenue and 108, and not even at the front of that. You'll have to drive around the mattress store, the pizzeria, and the "dispensary" to find it -- and parking here is tight. They're definitely not the easiest spot to get into. Stepping in, its a quaint, small restaurant: perhaps a little too small, as seating is tight and limited. They accept reservations, and making one ahead of time, particularly on a busy night, is a smart decision. The restaurant is Belgian, and features much of the country's motifs, including large portraits of their royal family. It also features the statue from which the restaurant takes its name. Inside, it feels like a small European cafe. They have a huge selection of both wines and Belgian beers. They have a great selection of /really/ incredible sausages, at a great price: this may become a regular stop in for lunches. But, what you're here for are the mussel pots. These are pots filled with mussels, celery, and onions, and your choice of spices / seasoning. They range from pretty simple garlic and butter to smoked salmon and brandy, with even Hawaiian options mixed in -- its almost overwhelming. I tried the "snob," which is mussels in brandy and lobster bisque, while my fiancee tried the "Provancale," which is tomatoes, bell peppers, and white wine. The mussels were fantastic, but unfortunately the amount of celery and onion is a little overpowering, and for me, the mussel pots tasted similarly because of the vegetables -- they were both really good, but just too similar (even with bell peppers in one). Next time, I may have to order two that are wildly different. One of my favourite things, believe it or not, is a well done escargot, and we started our meal with escargot. I have a friend who jokes that "escargot is an excuse to eat cheese drenches in garlic and butter, the snail is immaterial." Unfortunately, Mannequin Pis seems to agree with this: there was almost no snail to be tasted in the completely overwhelming amount of cheese. It was good, but if I wanted cheesy bread, I would have ordered cheesy bread. We did finish up the meal with dessert: their pot of chocolate is to die for, but also try the mousse. read more

This spot is a family favorite. My parents are regulars, we've been going for years and the one waiter knows their order by heart, wonderful guy. The frites are the best, and I always love the mussels. However, they've hired some new waitstaff that are less than enthusiastic. We're greeted by a young man who is polite in theory, but speaks as though he is reading a script. While we were eating our lunch there was an incredibly loud continuous noise coming from the bathroom hallway, followed by a stench of cleaning products. Someone was cleaning while we were eating in the restaurant which I understand does sometimes need to happen, however things like that, and vacuuming, happen after customers leave. The waiter forgot silverware multiple times, the music was too loud, and it was hot with the fans only being turned on at the end of our meal. Overall a disappointing trip as we normally have a much better time. We will be returning in hopes to see our usual waiter and because the food is always wonderful. read more

So I've been coming here now for almost 20 years and have had some amazing outings and some mediocre outings...BUT never have the mussels been sub par. Sunday night, the mussels were sub par. Their Marinière mussels are (were) a 100% reliable order. Subtle flavors and grit-free fabulousness abounds. But these seemed like they were cooked separate from the Marinière broth and they were completely devoid of flavor. To add insult to injury, almost each one had some sandy crunchiness to it. I'm seriously hoping that this was a one-off boo-boo and that the chef left the kitchen to the wrong people. I love this place so my fingers are crossed. I know I'll go back, but if there is a repeat performance like Sunday night then that might be the end of Mannequin Pis for me. :-( read more

The starched, white napkins set the tone (actually, the place would look even better and more consistent with its atmosphere if he had table clothes) set the tone. The service was excellent, from beginning to end. Not obtrusive, but friendly and attentive. We were there for Mother's Day and the restaurant did not disappoint. The appetizers were wonderful, especially the mussels pot and the salmon. The rack of lamb and duck dishes were terrific as was the Seafood Waterzooi with half lobster. The potential is there. I have been wanting to come here for years, as its always listed as a top place for mussels in the DC area. Finally had a chance to do it yesterday. Upon entering the place, you get the European vibe there, dark, cozy, smells of good food. Then the reality set in. Host was rude/indifferent to us walking in...no hello or smile and rudely pointed us to our reserved table and we walked over ourselves. Wait staff was equally cold and non-communicative and it took a while to even get menus. Each time someone different would come to the table, and surprisingly they all had the same attitude!! Food was good as others have said, but it wasn't outstanding. There are other places that serve mussels that are equally good or better, so I this their overall 3.5 rating is quite accurate. Haven't been here since the pandemic started, as the moules are my favorite here, but don't really travel well. Just tried the new to-go sandwich menu - both sandwiches were well constructed, with excellent bread and expertly applied condiments that minimized the dreaded soggy bread problem. (Half of the steak and cheese was even great the next day! That's a sturdy sandwich.) The Rueben had plenty of meat, though they have a option to add more for a small amount more if that's your thing. We got the side/house beverage combo to add onto to the sandwiches and chose the pommes frites - they also held up to the 15 minute journey home and were packed well. They came with a mayo dipping sauce that was garlicky, lemony perfection. 4.5 stars. Short version: Poirot has detected a hidden gem! Seriously hidden, I missed the turn twice. In a little strip tucked away off Georgia. Small space, black ceiling, comfy tables, art and wine bottles around the walls, a bar in the back, and three replicas of the notorious whizzer. Soft music. It's like stepping into a local restaurant in Europe. MP was suggested by a Yelp friend, to take advantage of half price wine night. We sipped a luscious malbec/syrah from Argentina while perusing the menu and snacking on the crisp crusted fresh bread. We went with the $35 three course prix fixe. The escargot were very nice, baked with herbs and cheese rather than the usual drowning in garlic butter. The star appetizer was smoked salmon, perfect fish served with pickled caper pods and a cheese crostino that I wanted more of. We both went for the waterzooi entrée, a cousin of boullibaise with mussels, salmon, shrimp, and scallops in a light cream sauce so good I lapped up the last few drops with a spoon, restraining myself from asking for third basket of that yummy bread. The pot au chocolat was tasty, not over sweetened, denser than mousse but lighter than pudding. The star was the chocolate triangles, rich and a little heavier than flourless cake, with bits of nut and fruit for a complex flavor and texture. Our server Edoardo was informative and attentive without hovering. A little slice of Belgium in suburbia. Excellent experience, good value, extensive beer collection and well curated wine list, five *****.
