While they do some good waffles the rest of the breakfast items I have tried, from the eggs to the potatoes and the always seemingly half hour old toast, have been just passable. There always seems to be an issue with all the items making it to the table hot. The service is impersonal and fairly slow. What a great find! We were driving from Aspen to Denver, and heard our stomachs grumbling over the stereo. There was a bit of a wait when we walked in, but it didn't seem like it would take that long. The waitress was single-handedly running the entire front of house, with sharp-as-a-tack demeanor. Although it was our first time there, it seemed like it hadn't changed for years and years. Outdated, but perfect because of that. The food was solid. My partner and I agreed that this was one of the best meals on our trip, and left with happy stomachs. read more

Cafe Bernard is at its best in the morning. Get there early to grab the house specialty: morning buns. Yes, basically a french version of a cinnamon roll. C'est magnifique. Stay for breakfast and choose from a range of hearty but healthy dishes, excellent Illy coffee, and the best hot chocolate in the valley. In the summer, sit on the patio and watch the people strolling by on their way to the Basalt Farmer's Market on Sundays. The restaurant is decent for dinner, with a good wine list, but skip dessert -- the choices are nothing special and clearly not made in-house. read more

We decided to try Cafe Bernard for brunch when we were in the area a few weeks ago. Took down the address from Yelp, plugged it into the GPS, and ended up in a residential area of Aspen with no restaurants. When I got home & checked the address in Google, I discovered the address is correct, but the town is Basalt, not Aspen. Urban Spoon had it right. Since I'm forced to rate it if this is going to post, I'll give it 4 stars like the other reviews. read more

I have heard a lot of great things about Cafe Bernard, and finally went there last weekend... It did not disappoint! Service was good and quick, food was cheap and GREAT. Best breakfast potatoes I've had in a while. My friend and I both got breakfast for a grand total of $15 with tip. It is a cute little place with an old fashioned feel. I have only eaten dinner at Cafe Bernard. I will eat there again. And again. I had liver (because Bernard bragged on it) with pomme frites and haricot vert. I was transformed into a fan after the first bite, then vowed to return after the dessert of coconut sorbet. I have been back several times and have never been disappointed. Went there today (August 11, 2012) for lunch. Ordered the Caesar salad with chicken, which i had had there before. I remember remarking when we went there last the caesar was done correctly with anchovie and egg. This time it was drenched in a sweet orange sauce, which I was informed by the server was to accompany the chicken. Absolutely awful and turned the dish into more of an Asian sweet sour type dish than a Caesar. My wife ordered trout which was oily, the vegetables were good, and the potatoes were tasteless, greasy and soggy. The foursome of ladies at the next table ate very little of what they were served. Two of the four barely touched their plates and one of those two had also ordered the "chicken caesar". The kitchen is slipping badly and I had the sense the boss is not minding the store. There is plenty of new competition next door so I would advise Bernard to raise his game. read more

This place is fabulous. We have probably eaten ther 20 times. Great food, great service and a wonderful owner. I can only speak for their dinners and breakfast. I've never eaten lunch there. Menu is not large but everything taste fabulous. read more

Every meal at Bernard's is wonderful, but I am particularly partial to dinner here. Fantastic French cuisine served by a Master of his trade. Love it for special occasions, celebrations, or just a nice meal out. One of my favorites in the Roaring Fork Valley. Always consistent, ample portions and I have tried everything at least once. The mussels ( my favorite is with the cream sauce) but also excellent with the tomato garlic. Escargot, Curry Shrimp (amazing), filet mignon cooked just right, the seafood platter, salmon, even the liver and onions are outstanding. Warm bread and fresh butter, Pom frittes, salad items and we love the sorbets, served in their own casing (lemon in the lemon, coconut in the shell, mango and so on). Bernard personally visits each table to ensure everything exceeds your expectations. No bar service but very nice wine menu. I have never had a bad meal at Cafe Bernard. No let be re-phrase that. I love everything at Cafe Bernard. Priced better than Aspen and better food. Also, good breakfasts at a reasonable price. read more

Can't only give this place one star, but will not give above two. Sat down for a Sunday breakfast and the service was terrible. Took almost 20 min to order and receive a coffee...plain old drip, nothing special. If the place was full I would have had some empathy, but being we were one of a handful of tables I began to wonder why. Upon glancing at the menu I was terribly disappointed, for the price point you'd better offer something special. As hungry as I was, nothing appeared appetizing. I went to Bernard's by myself to grab breakfast and study. I did not feel like I was warmly welcomed. The server seemed to want to rush me out. I was done with my food and opened my book but felt awkward. I left soon after. It did not seem like a "stay as long as you would like" cafe. read more

After reading some of these reviews it seems I not the only one to be victim to Bernard's unacceptable behavior. Apparently if you eat in his restaurant it is considered "complaining" if you a. ask for no salt on your food b. inquire about a different flavor jelly and c. ask if there is wifi there (last time I checked we were living in modern times) While all of these things felt like innocent questions to us, Bernard seemed to take offense. Before I knew what was happening he was standing at my table asking me, in a very rude way, how I can use so much sugar in my coffee. He proceeded to lecture me how sugar is bad for you then made some snarky comment about salt. I actually had no idea what was happening. When I asked him why he was saying these things to me he said I had been complaining. At the same time we realized, like a petulant child, he removed the jelly from our table. When we asked for it back they told us it was gone. When we told him we had been eating there for years he responded with "well this will be your last time". I was fuming and confronted the waitress, who happened to be his daughter. Next thing I know the wife is coming out of the kitchen telling me not to yell at her daughter. The whole episode was so insane. Needless to say we walked out without eating. It totally ruined my day. read more

We had a delicious dinner, pork osso bucco. It had a heavy, delicious cream based sauce, prepared in the traditional French way and served with pomme frites. So far my favorite restaurant in the area. It's a little bit on the pricey side, but it is priced appropriately.
