We went here for breakfast while on vacation. I just had a bagel because I wasn't that hungry. My boyfriend had a dutch pancake with eggs and bacon that tasted very good. The coffee was good as well. Not sure when their last health inspection was. I ordered a vanilla latte and watched as the barista steamed my milk with an old milk coated steaming wand then stirred it all together with a spoon he pulled out of an opaque cup of water. I don't even want to know how long it had been since that was changed. I'm all for hole in the walls and local businesses, but it's not that difficult to keep a small place clean. Great for getting some work done, good wifi. The sun in this weather makes the spot in the right corner very agreeable.

This place sorta sucks. Not really gonna sugar coat it or say how awesome the corner spot in downtown SF is. Funky place with weird menu outside that doesn't match inside. I mean really basic stuff for not basic price. I got a simple egg, bacon, and cheese crossaint thing that was on the menu. 25 mins at least to get that to me. One other person on the place eating and 2 with coffee. Not sure what the hell was going on back there but damn. Water served in weird plastic elementary school type cups filled straight out of the tap right at the register. No ice and warm. Aldo there's this one big table in there maybe 6-7 seats and this one solo book reading woman taking up the whole table eating nothing with no awareness thst maybe a bigger group might need to sit there. I'm a long time Bean patron. The food is exceptional and the staff is great. The kitchen is small so if you're in a hurry to get your food and the place is packed then skip this place or at least be forewarned. Don't give them a crappy rating because you're waiting longer than you'd like. Remember, this place is a CAFE, not a restaurant. Overall, this is a great place to get a drink and a bite to eat. I usually bring out of town guests here for breakfast. I like that thier menu isn't too fussy but yet have ecletic things on there ( ie swedish pankcakes ). Coffee is nothing to write home about, and sometimes you have to yell what you want to the person taking the order such as I DON'T EAT MEAT!!! DO NOT PUT MEAT IN IT!!! This is a neighborhood jewel. This is a cafe i come hang out at, not because of great food or great coffee but more for the atmosphere and the mood it puts me it. It has a certain warmth and very uplifting quality about it, reminds me of a cafe in italy. The thousands of photos plastered on the tables and european decorations on the wall takes me to a totally different place when i'm there. They also offer WI-FI for the cyber surfers. Big dutch pancakes for $6.00 and good coffee. We walked past the tourist pancake spots in Union Square and headed to Cafe Bean. No wait on a Sunday morning @ 10:00!!!! *based solely on customer service, not on food or drink...* Happened to be standing on the corner after meeting the bf from a haircut. Decided to pop in for a snack and to use the bathroom. Noticing that the bathroom had a out of service sign, my boyfriend asks about it as he hands over his couple of items to purchase. Without skipping a beat, the guy (I guess Chester) says "you need to purchase more than that to use it". My boyfriend then says, ok no problem I'll just get these and find somewhere else.Chesters response was then, "no I mean you need to buy more and I'll let you use it". Yes,..we get it, but after your rude response without waiting for us to even say if we were ordering food or drinks, just by glancing at the items in our hands we do not want to purchase anymore things from you, but we aren't going to be rude and walk away. We did then try to add a coffee but then Chester said "no no I'm only charging you for this, it's fine...." sooo confusing and bad customer service. I understand the need to make money and the need to not be used for a bathroom, but please.. This was an awkward horrible hospitality experience and I'm bummed cuz I love chai and wish I could have tried Chesters. read more

love, love, love cafe bean! I have been coming here since I moved to SF 2 years ago. Chester is a sweetheart! They have free wifi but you'll have to charge your computer somewhere else---there's no place to plug it into. I love their smoked salmon omelette and if you have a sweet tooth, you absolutely must try their dutch pancakes---nutella and banana, to be exact. (you can always ask for extra bananas). Most of the people in the cafe are students and the occasional tourist. It's a great place to people watch on a warm summer day. read more

Excellent food, wonderful coffee. The first time we came here, my husband and I shared the lox plate and a cinnamon apple dutch pancake. He got a white chocolate mocha and I asked for a latte with extra foam. Everything was perfect, and the guy who made my latte really knows how to make good foam. The dutch pancake was so good that we went back the very next day for another one. They're a little more substantial than crepes and lighter than pancakes. Cooked so they're crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Perfect. The next time we went I switched it up a bit and got an omelet, thinking it couldn't possibly be as good as the pancakes but it sounded so good I had to try it - I was wrong, it was AMAZING. I didn't know an omelet could be so delicious. I got the Daniels omelet I think. The next time we went my husband got an herb brie veggie sandwich (don't quote me on the cheese, it might not have been brie but it was something like it) and a caramel latte. I got a turkey sandwich, again not expecting much but was floored by how tasty a simple meal could be. They have a decent beer selection and a few on tap, but we've never tried them. I'm sure we'll get around to that someday. In a nutshell, this place does something for me that I value highly: every time I take a bite of something new, I am floored by how delicious it is.
