Life is too short not to order dessert first..and at Cafe Alsace, it would be a shame not to. At some point in your life, please order their house made ice cream. It is...and I never say this, the BEST ice cream I have ever tasted in my life. Particularly, the Lavender Honey ice cream. Sweet and herbal, creamy and buttery, not too rich, but decadent enough, this ice cream is hands down the best dessert I have eaten in Atlanta. They also had Biscoff ice cream which was equally as delicious, but the Lavender was my favorite. Now that we got that out of the way, the rest of the meal... I ordered Beef Bourguignon: Satisfying, nice warm flavors, pairs well with red or white wine. The Schnitzel was light and buttery and a lovely accompaniment. A bit too much tomato for my taste. I prefer brothy/beefy/ gravy vs. red tomato based. But still tasty. My partner ordered: Beef Wellington. She said it was the best thing she ever ate. No kidding. Two "bests" in one visit! I had a bite of hers, it practically melted in my mouth. I've never had Wellington before. I only heard of it from Hell's Kitchen and I always thought it seemed too stuffy of an item to serve at a cozy restaurant. Boy, was I wrong. This item is the epitome of cozy. A tender piece of seasoned beef wrapped in a chewy and airy blanket of dough. Other notable things: the peppercorn salad dressing, bright, peppery and creamy on fresh greens. Ambience: eclectic,homey, rustic. Kitschy mismatched photos, chairs, salt shakers, jars of jam for sale, local paintings and photographs hung for sale. etc. Service: friendly. I highly recommend. While on my search for beef Wellington on the menus of Atlanta restaurants, I stumbled upon this quaint little cafe in Decatur. It was a little difficult to find after parking in a random spot along the street. The interior is small and maybe can seat 10-15 small tables of people. We were seated in the back of the restaurant since we were a bigger group, and ended up at one of few large tables. The server (and owner!) was very nice and had a charming French accent. Most of the group ordered the Boeuf Wellington, since that's what we came here for, and salads with fig and honey vinaigrette dressing. The Wellington came out drenched in a gravy sauce, that I thought would drown the puff pastry but still complemented the dish well. The meat was already medium rare (only cooked that way, otherwise it will be a dry well done mess inside the puff pastry). I enjoyed the dish although it wasn't like the hyped up Gordon Ramsay dish we hoped for. Definitely give it a try, though! Afterward we all splurged and split three desserts among the seven of us: creme brûlée, bread pudding, and the profiteroles. You can never go wrong with an order of creme brûlée. The bread pudding was a little tart for me but texture was perfect. Profiteroles were light and sweet, although the ice cream melted real quick. Other dishes also look like they're worth a try, so I will definitely try to pass by here again for some more nom's! read more

I don't know why this spot gets so much hype. Came here for brunch and was utterly disappointed. Okay, I know Alsace is a region in France, but how can you call yourself a French restaurant and serve store bought/cold baguette with butter and jam from what I can get at a continental breakfast at a Holiday Inn Express? The omelets were okay. The potatoes were okay. Maybe the dinner is great. The service was slow even without a full room, the food was meh, the prices were high for the quality. I'll probably stay home and toast bread at home next time. read more

It is REALLY important that you come here and eat tarte flambee. I studied abroad in 2011 and one thing I have missed is tarte flambee. Trader Joe's tried but it's not the same. I had been dreaming of coming here but I knew I couldn't really make it happen and it just sort of was forgotten. That is, until a friend and I got started talking about how many restaurants there are that we want to go to, and I remembered wanting to come here, so we had decided at the time that it would be our next stop. But months went by, and finally it was time. I was ready. We came right as they opened for dinner and it stayed pretty quiet the whole time, I think when we left there were just four other tables occupied. The restaurant is small and SO cute. I loved looking around at all the decor. I thought about getting just the tarte flambee but my friend and I ended up splitting it. It is HUGE which I should have known, it's a pricier appetizer on the menu but that's because it's easily enough for 4-5 people. Or you could split it between two people with salad, though I don't recall seeing the side salads that come with entrees available on their own on the menu. Tarte Flambee is basically pizza but way better. It was created as a way to make sure ovens were hot enough for baking bread, and I want to thank those farmers for this invention. It's topped with creme fraiche, onion, bacon, and emmenthal cheese. SO. GOOD. We were good and only ate two pieces each and took the rest home. They have a lot of specials: there was a soup, a crepe, a spaetzle, and another dish or two. The entrees ranged from $17-24, mostly on the higher end of things on the menu. I was having a tough time deciding what to have but settled on bœuf bourguignon because I have never had it before. Despite it totally not being an Alsatian dish at all, I liked that it came with spaetzle, which was another thing I was considering, so I got to try both. First though, the salad, you may think it's a salad who cares. But their dressings are pretty damn good. I had the herbes de provence peppercorn dressing, which is the only creamy option. It was amazing. There were even red peppercorns in the salad from it. A couple of the dressings are available to buy in a jar. OKAY. Now bœuf bourguignon. This is one delicious, comforting dish. Beef, carrots, mushrooms, and onion in a delicious red wine sauce. Here they serve it up with spaetzle, which was actually a delicious mix. This dish is $20, and if you have an appetizer it is easily two meals. I felt weird getting leftovers because it really took me back to France but it was not a problem. They also have a bunch of desserts, including 3-4 ice creams. I will definitely be back for more tarte flambee. read more

"Downtown Decatur" has some hidden surprises. And Cafe Alsace was a pleasant one for dinner with wife and daughter. Daughter had a very hardy Spaetzle with mushrooms and spinach. Wife had the crepe of the day. I had the stuffed chicken breast. All tasty. Authentic. I spend a lot of time in France, but not Alasce region. Dinner was quite enjoyable , and reminiscent of many dinners in France. But not overconfident. Wife and daughter had chocolate mouse, they found that disappointing. But they are really fussy about mouse. No kidding. Service was comfortable and accommodating to our schedule. Restaurant is small and fine on a weekday night. I hope they don't lose this on weekends. Hostess (owner?) Was very friendly and welcoming. Decatur has grown up. And with restaurants like this, are worth the drive, even if not nearby. read more

Alsace is like that one you keep swiping on a dating app thinking it wouldn't be special but finally give it a chance and it turns out to be the best date. We had passed by a few times but never felt like giving it a try. But luckily today we did. The moment you walk in, it reminds you of a hipster French Café with laid back servers who are efficient but don't hover over you. As for the food, it was perfection. Ordered the Croque Madame. Very fresh with two eggs sunny side up. The only thing I didn't like that one egg was over cooked. But nevertheless the toast was toasted just right and the amount of cheese and ham complimented the overall plate well. The second dish we ordered was the BOEUF BOURGUIGNON in a pastry. It was a very good twist of the French classic. The carrots in the pastry still had a crunch which worked well for breakfast. Definitely going back for their dinner and hoping it will be as delicious of an adventure. read more

Wifey and I enjoyed a getaway evening and romantic dinner at Cafe Alsace. She had the Beef Wellington (review to be posted soon) and I had the Beef Bourguignon with spaetzle. Both were excellent. We also had the selection of cheeses as a app and a salad came with dinner. The selection of cheeses came with grapes, walnuts and bread. I love their French baguettes -- the crust was perfectly crunchy and the bread was perfectly soft. The cheeses varied from a robust blue to creamy white. Two goat cheeses as well -- one newer and the other aged and more spicy. Wifey had an awesome robust red wine while I enjoyed a 1664 Kronenburg ale which paired perfectly with our cheeses. You don't hear this often regarding French restaurants, but we really had too much food. Prices were a little on the high side but compare that to what you'd normally get (portion-wise) in a French restaurant and I thought it was quite acceptable. I guarantee we will be back. read more

A true French gem tucked away next to some of the more bombastic Decatur restaurants. You could nearly miss, or even just assume it's not worth your time while you're on your way elsewhere. STOP. Go in. Unlike so many French restaurant, this one is actually French-owned. A small language barrier may not be your thing...but you sacrifice some things for authenticity. My boyfriend and I stopped in after a Cirque du Soleil show to keep the French vibe going and we were far from disappointed. They were on the verge of closing and it was a slow night, so I genuinely wasn't expecting miracles. But the host was so gracious in the face of us potentially ruining her night. She joked with us, gave us her suggestions on wine (we went with a red, but I forget anymore than that). I do remember what I ordered in full detail. Boeuf Wellington. I had only had it from my mother before and it only fell slightly short of that. So with that in mind, it's safe for you to assume it is true French home cooking. Appetizers were delicious We ordered something resembling a pizza/flatbread with cheese and a small amount of ham/very tasty. The special cold cucumber mint soup was amazing!!! The French onion soup was also very good! I had the beef Wellington. The meet was very tender and the potatoes were cooked perfectly with a peppercorn sauce. We had a lovely leisurely dinner. The fig honey salad dressing was one of my favorite things I ate. The rhubarb tart we had for dessert was delightful. We had several questions for our server and she was very patient with us and helpful... Very nice location in the Decatur square. I would definitely recommend eating here. read more

My absolute favorite brunch restaurant in the ATL metro area--period. I used to go here weekly (on Sunday) for brunch when I was an actual City of Decatur resident over five years ago. The place still serves the BEST homemade pate in town. Please don't tell anyone else about this place, I may not be able to get a table any more. :-) read more

Cute, quaint, small restaurant in the perfect location. The dining area isn't very large, but we were seated as soon as we walked in. We ordered two appetizers (escargot and Tour de France) and a bottle of wine. The apps came out hot and fresh. We ordered Beef Wellington and the Three Sausage Plate for dinner - both were awesome! And on top of it all our server was great! We will definitely be back. read more

Very nice atmosphere- perfect for my needs today. Wanted a cozy spot to warm up and enjoy a small meal and read my book. The Jerusalem artichoke soup and escargot really hit the spot. Very flavorful and just enough. The mousse au chocolat was fluffy, delicious, and not too sweet. Extremely glad I found this place! FYI: they don't accept American Express. Other than that, a great experience. read more

I agree witht he last reviewer as this place was a total suprise. Cramp, a little slow service makes you feel like your in a french restraunt. I really loved the food here, our appetizer the pate was fantastic and my beef wellington might be one of my top 10 if not to 5 dishes I have had all time. Had such a lovely brunch experience here! Great for a small group to come together and have good leisurely community. When you hear French, you might think it will be more formal, but instead you instantly feel relaxed by the charm of the place. Servers are friendly and helpful, and I saw the owner walking around as well serving and talking to customers. The hardest part is just choosing what you want to get! Other people got a little more complex, but I went with a classic quiche and I think I won the brunch. It was the perfect combination of buttery, fluffy eggs, gooey cheese, and spinach and mushrooms, oh and the crust was quality too. Nothing overpowered the other flavors and it was just an elegant dish. read more

Had an anniversary dinner there. Three appetizers and 2 entrees! Well, truly our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. The French onion soup was delicious, the pate was good but I've had better, and the third's name has slipped my mind but recall it was really good. Ah yes, the onion tarte. I had the duck and my husband had a dish whose name I can't begin to spell but consisted of lamb sausage, cheese, and noodles. They were both daily specials. Overall, it was a nice experience. The cafe is tiny so prepare to cozy up with your fellow diners. The service was excellent and unobtrusive. Everyone spoke French if you so desire practicing :) I'm picky so it's 3 stars but well deserved. I'd return. read more

Visited for the first time to have brunch this morning. Service is prompt and friendly without being suffocating. Immediately offered two drip coffees, which were strong. My mom ordered the assorted croissants -- plain, almond paste, and chocolate. They were good, but I was a bit surprised by the dessert-ish presentation with whipped cream -- still good, but a bit surprising at brunch. (This was probably a personal preference issue, though!) My mom had the savory crepe with eggs, goat cheese and tomatoes and I had a savory crepe with eggs, andouille sausage, and mozzarella. The crepes were huge and served with well-seasoned potatoes and toast on the side. The owner (?) is French from Alsace and charming -- nice to hear French in Atlanta! Price-to-quality, this is definitely one of the best places to have brunch in downtown Decatur and a nice respite from typical Southern food. I suppose I would have loved the option of a café au lait -- steamed milk, rather than packaged half-and-half -- or espresso-based drinks, but the coffee was fine and I suppose Americans expect unlimited drip coffee refills. I also would have been delighted to be served a portion of salted butter from Brittany for my toast -- even better with sea salt crystals -- instead of the little packaged butter containers on the table with the half & half. Minor disappointments aside, I really enjoyed the restaurant and would love to return for lunch or dinner. Cafe Alsace is a step above most of the restaurants in Decatur. read more

How many francophiles does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Well, when I was in Paris, their lightbulbs were all zzzzzzzzzzz... Cozy bistro setting in a small hole in the wall location. We noticed our server was authentically French and appreciated that. Bad news: the escargot was very average. Good news: the Nage St. Jacques was outstanding! In fact, I would rank it as one of the best meals I've had in my life. read more

Super cute ambience and really sweet waitress. I wish I could give this restaurant a positive review however we went for just desserts and were disappointed in 2 of 3. The creme brûlée was not set and dripped off the spoon and the pot de creme had seized or separated (?) - completely gritty. The honey and lavender ice cream is well balanced and creamy so there's that. They comped just the creme brûlée. Also of note, apparently dining in meant that they were $7/dessert. The price listed online and on their last page of their dinner menu (which priced the desserts at $5 and pot de creme at $6) were "only for take out pricing" so they said. Will not return. read more

Shrimp with Scramble Egg with Mayo (made with leaves that grow wild and taste like garlic) EXCEPTIONAL! Eggs Benedict is the other dish with ham. Red potatoes on the side - Delicious! My waitress was the owner I'm guessing. The place is very French and decorated very well. There are lots of things you can buy. I got the coffee cup that you see on the table for my husbands mom in the U.K. I'll bring her here when she visits. Bread was delicious and made there. Come early or see if you can get a reservation. It's a packed place and very popular which I'm not surprised. read more

Alsace is the Eastern region of France on the border of Germany and Switzerland. You find a strong Germanic influence in Alsace food (Sauerkraut and pork dishes, spaetzle, onion pie...) and wines. Café Alsace presents a few of these typical dishes as well as classic French fare (Cassoulet, Boeuf Bourguignon, Coq au Vin...) and dishes created by Chef Pascal Burel (from Alsace, France with Benedicte Ulsas Cooper , co-founder of Café Alsace, which opened in 1997. Pascal brings his technical and creative knowledge of French cuisine while Benedicte, native of Alsace shares her traditional family recipes. Our wait staff speaks French and is happy to give more details about the menu and recommend pairing wines. We rarely eat meat, but I have made an exception to try the Moroccan lamb burger which was worth it. I usually spring for the upgrade to get crispy smashed potatoes instead of chips. And it's worth noting that the drinks are also well above average: I've enjoyed the indulgence of a Bravassi hard Italian soda with my meal on a lazy afternoon, after shopping at the Second Life thrift store. Their drinks are very good, and they serve them up straightaway to savor while you wait for your order to come up. I have not yet ordered a salad but they have an array of excellent / choices, and I know they will not disappoint. I also want to note that although there is not waiter service (which makes it an ideal spot to meet friends) the staff is friendly, and well above average. It's such a great vibe, and a real bonus of living in the area. They also serve breakfast, and I feel confident in their level of quality in recommending them as a stop for anyone.
