Cafe Alsace is a popular, classic downtown Decatur French restaurant that has stood the test of time. It's been around since 1997 and it's easy to see why -- the food and service are both great. This is a small, cozy, whimsical place that's great for intimate dates and small group dining. All the servers speak French (and English) and the ambiance is that of an old, charming, quaint French bistro. Metered parking is available along E Ponce De Leon Ave and in the small lot in front of Brick Store Pub (E Court Square). The meters are free every day after 6pm and all day Sunday. Alternatively, you can park in the Town Center Deck which is behind the building across the street. The deck's entrance is at 546 Church St and it costs $2 for every 30 minutes up to a $10 daily max. Metered parking is a better deal ($1 for every 30 minutes) and you can add time to your meter and pay for parking using the Parkmobile app (zone #7801). The restaurant serves lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch (10am-2:30pm). Three of us visited for dinner on a Saturday night around 8pm. Cafe Alsace doesn't take reservations for parties of less than four unless it's a special occasion like Valentine's Day. Not surprisingly, the restaurant was pretty busy when we showed up and we were told the wait would be as long as 45 minutes. Luckily, our actual wait was no more than 15 minutes. Alsace refers to a small region in northeast France, the majority of which borders Germany. Therefore, Alsatian cuisine has a lot of German influence; for example, spaetzle. The dinner menu features eight appetizers, priced at $3-15 each, including items like tarte flambee (Alsacian flatbread baked with various ingredients, $15; it's similar to pizza) and tarte a l'oignon (Alsatian onion pie, $7); entree-sized salads featuring beef and seafood priced at $17 each; and over a dozen entrees such as ratatouille en croute ($19 vegetarian or $22 with lamb sausage), veal cordon bleu (veal scaloppini; $25), magret de canard (seared duck breast, $25 without or $35 with foie gras), and bouef bourguignon (beef stew, $24). And of course, they serve all sorts of French beer, wine, and champagne. In addition, they have a limited take-home menu with dishes like pate, quiche, bouef bourguignon, spaetzle, soup, and desserts which you can order anytime. Here's what we chose: Apps: * Brie aux pommes ($13) - baked 4 oz. Brie with sauteed rosemary apples, garnish of pumpkin seeds, soft pretzel bread * Escargots ($12) - six escargots baked in a garlic and parsley butter, baguette Plat chauds (dinner entrees): * Spaetzle a l'alsacienne ($19) - the original: ham, onions, cream and cheese * Cassoulet ($26) - Southwest specialty of France - lima beans, duck confit leg, smoked pork sausage * Poulet farci ($23) - chicken breast stuffed with pecans, Brie and spinach with a thyme demi-glaze, potato gratin In general, the food was terrific. Everything was a hit except for the poulet farci (more on that later). The Brie was fantastic. It was buttery, creamy, and rich. The sweet and sour sauteed apples paired perfectly with the mild-tasting cheese and the pumpkin seeds provided a nice, contrasting, crunchy texture. If you like Brie, I recommend it. I loved the escargots. These were some of the best I've had. The snails were plump and meaty with a smooth, appetizing consistency. They tasted "fresh." Important to every escargot dish is the garlic and butter sauce and this one was excellent. It was heavy, but not too heavy, addictive, and packed with flavor. I wanted to sop up every last drop with the pieces of bread. If there was only one dish on Cafe Alsace's menu I would suggest, it would be the spaetzle. It was phenomenal. On the surface, it looks like a pretty simple dish, but it's very, very good. The soft egg noodles were boiled to perfection and the layers of cheese were so good, we couldn't stop eating them. While a little on the heavy side, this is a superbly gratifying dish. Cassoulet is French comfort food. If you're looking for a hearty, filling dish, this is the one to get. The ingredient portion sizes are generous. The pork sausage is savory and flavorful and the duck confit leg is moist, tender, and tasty. This is a "meat and potatoes" type dish. The poulet farci was disappointing. The meat was dry and tough and the stuffing didn't help to make this dish any more appetizing. The accompanying potato gratin, on the other hand, was quite good. It was nicely prepared and delicious. All entrees come with a salad and a slice of French bread with butter. Like most of the food here, even the simple salad, with big, green, crisp leaves of lettuce and sliced cucumber and tomato, was delectable. I had my salad with herbes de Provence dressing (a creamy peppercorn dressing) and it was outstanding. The dressing was money. Despite a busy dinner service, our orders came out fairly quick. The staff was friendly and efficient, from the hostess to our server. read more

Excellent reception on phone when making our reservation for 4. Equally gracious upon arrival. Our table was fully set in preparation. Enjoyed a delicious French cuisine lunch. Our table enjoyed escargot, baguettes, crepes, quiches, salads, onion soup with water, wine and beer to quench our pallets. Dessert was unanimous... apple strudel with ice cream ... and coffee. Excellent French cooking and gracious, relaxed service. The ambiance is lovely, offering a brief respite from the day. We went for lunch and had the pate appetizer, quiche lorraine and french onion soup. The quiche was rich and lush with cheese and ham...no one else serves quiche this delicious. Our French onion soup had a very flavorful broth and the french bread topper had a delicious cheese that did more than challenge your silverware dexterity to eat. I'm not a pate critic but my friend said it was very very good. Downtown Decatur is almost all paid parking lots and spaces which is irritating but there are several public parking lots around. read more

One of my favorite hidden gems in Atlanta, this cozy restaurant serves delicious authentic French cuisine. I've been here many times and never been disappointed. Amazing wines, salads, entrees, bread, ice cream, you name it -- everything tastes unbelievably fresh. I'm not usually a salad person, but their salads with peppercorn dressing are great. My go-to is their spaetzle aux champignons, a delectably rich pasta dish with cream and mushrooms and topped with melted cheese. I always have leftovers. We got the French Onion soup as an appetizer. It was really good 8/10, so could pass if you wanted dessert! For mains we got the Spaetzle a L'Alsacienne (10/10) - amazing comfort food and big portions, Poulet Farci (10/10) - a lighter delicious dish with more protein, and Boeuf Bourguignon (6/10) - it was good, just not my favorite compared to everything else. This unassuming little spot, compared to its more prominent neighbors on the the block like Leon's and no. 246, offers French fare in a charming space. Cafe Alsace has been in business since 1997 and features more German-leaning food from the Alsace region of France. I came for brunch, and I ended up ordering the mauricette au jambon ($11). This was a sandwich on baguette-shaped pretzel bread, with prosciutto, caramelized apples, and Brie on the inside. Herbed red potatoes were the side. Everything was delightful (and rich) though the prosciutto brought a lot of salt to the sandwich so make sure you have water handy. Other offerings included croissants, sandwiches, omelettes, crepes, salads, quiches, and eggs "Benedicte." Due to the cafe's petite size and popularity, I'd advise coming later for brunch, or maybe early. Brunch is only on Sundays and runs from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. I actually tried going for brunch once before at Cafe Alsace but there was a wait and we ended up going to a nearby restaurant instead because of time constraints. They will call you when a table opens up which is convenient. In addition to being a restaurant, Cafe Alsace is also a gift shop. There were cute tea towels from France, tote bags, cheese cutting boards, and more for sale. The dinner menu looks fantastic, will have to try that next! read more

I have been going to Cafe Alsace since I was a child and I keep on coming back each time I'm in Atlanta. Not only is the food and atmosphere incredible, Bénédicte, the owner, is such a genuine soul. Bénédicte always remembers my family and she and my mother have bonded over that fact that both of their daughter's share a love for horses. I've made a point to bring visiting friends and family to Cafe Alsace, as it allows a nice glimpse into the city of Atlanta but without the extra buzz. The restaurant is a small, quaint space, which is great because it is never too loud and you can always hear your dinner guests. The restaurant is decorated with items from Alsace and you can even buy some of the trinkets. This is the home of my favorite salad in the world and I normally hate salads with all of my heart. The honey-fig dressing is life changing and the salad is always beautifully plated with lively greens and yummy tomatoes. My three favorite appetizers are the Brie aux Poires, the Tarte Flambee and the Pate du Chef. For entrees, anything and I mean anything is good. I typically order the Spaetzle aux Champignons, Veal Cordon Bleu, Truite en Papilloteveal, Spaetzle a L'Alsacienne, Confit de Canard, Choucroute Garnieonfit de Canard, Boeuf Wellington, or the special. All are delicious. However, when it comes to ordering dessert, I dare never sway. Always and forever I pledge to thee.. The homemade honey and lavender ice cream that is. After wanting to go here for quite some time, I finally made it in. It was more than worth the wait. All of my food (and I mean ALL of it) was incredible. I had a Mauricette au Jambon (ham and caramelized apples on a pretzel bun) with creamy asparagus soup and Chauteau Duchasse White Bordeaux. I do not usually have dessert at lunch, but I couldn't resist the apple rhubarb Tarte Tatin with homemade honey lavender ice cream. The apples were skin on and tender (I don't know about you, but I love skin on my cooked apples). The ice cream was decadent. The Tarte tatin was so hot and fresh I barely escaped burning my mouth. The pretzel bread was crispy and salty on the inside, and perfectly soft and moist inside. The soup had a very strong asparagus flavor, and everything was the perfect portion. The atmosphere was cozy and jumbled; just the kind of atmosphere one should want in a delicious café. You'll be knocking elbows with knick-knacks, and the concrete floor is a little uneven, but in my opinion, a sterile atmosphere is the kiss of death for a cafe like this. Chaos makes food taste a little better. I was served by the owner, Benedicte, who had perfect timing. European style dining is famously slow, and I wanted to linger, but she whisked away my old dishes and brought new menus with almost clairvoyant accuracy. This is a charming little restaurant with a true neighborhood feel. Service is very good and friendly. The pate appetizer was excellent served with toasted baguette and cornichons. I traveled from Portland, Oregon to visit family and stumbled on this charming restaurant while taking a walk. We decided to have dinner here the following evening and had a fantastic experience! We ordered a cheese platter, salad with fig vinaigrette, duck, sauerkraut and sausage, and lavender honey ice cream and macaroons (blueberry and chocolate) for dessert - all made with love and fresh, high-quality ingredients. Portland is know as a foodie city, but doesn't have anything like this lovely spot. Everything was delicious and reasonably priced with large portions - plenty of leftovers to take home. The owner was our waiter and took excellent care of us, including recommending a delicious wine pairing for the duck. We look forward to eating here again whenever we return to Atlanta! read more

Everything was looking right! I walked into Cafe Alsace on a Friday afternoon for lunch, and was surprised to find a packed house with only 1 table left. Fortunately I only needed one, but I was super excited about this place because it was checking off all my boxes Super cozy? Check Authentic french vibe? Check packed house? Check Hidden in plain site? Check They do have daily lunch specials at Cafe Alsace, but after perusing the menu, I decided on the Mauricette Au Poulet with chicken ($10). The Mauricette is a sandwich with pretzel bread, came with pesto and your choice of cheese (I got blue cheese) along with black truffle oil. In addition it came with soup or salad. I got their french onion soup. The presentation on everything was nice, however the big problem to me was the sandwich was dry. The chicken was cooked to the point where it wasn't moist at all. The bread was nice, but I was expecting it to be a sandwich that was a little more juicy than it was. The french onion soup came with a block of bread soaked in the soup, along with some cheese and onions with a brown broth. The broth was okay and the soup was definitely better than the sandwich. Cafe Alsace is located off of Ponce de leon ave, is just a few doors from Starbucks and Leon's. There's no parking available outside of the street parking and few lots you can find near the Decatur Square, but it's easily within walking distance. Customer service was a little slow...both with getting a menu to me and getting a check to me. That's likely because one person was working the entire floor of about 25 people, but I managed to get my meal taken care of in a lunch hour, so while they were a little slow, things worked. Cafe Alsace has been around for a while, so I think they've carved out a nice customer base despite the strong competition in the form of restaurants in or near the Decatur Square, which is great. I do wish my sandwich wasn't so dry, but if i'm ever feeling the need for french eats, I may check them out again. read more

My wife and I came here for her 68th birthday. I had seen good reviews of their beef wellington. The reviews were right on and the wellington was well worth the over an hour trip there. We had a bottle of Syrah, salad, wellington and chocolate eclairs. The price was resonable and we'll go back. read more
