Hidden inside Kinship Butcher, this is a small coffee shop great for an on the go pick me up. There are two cushions in the window's ledge to wait for your drink and outside there are a couple tables. I chose to come in because when researching coffee shops in the area, I learned that Atlanta-born owner has a background in mixology and values the craft of making drinks. I could taste the quality in my drink, the base was smooth and mild. They make syrups in hose and flavors change with the season, I came towards the end of their menu life cycle so I grabbed a honey latte, but so wish I had the chance to try a more unique flavor. I walked in kind of wanting to hate this place. The 20 year olds lined up in their crisp never exercised in athliesure awaiting the simple yet sheik designed coffee shop. Coffee was priced very high and portions are small, but what you get in return is a very artisanal experience. So often have I cried and bemoaned coffee shops, that don't go out of their way to be creative with their drink choices. Why doesn't my local shop try to be creative and seasonal like Starbucks, who I try my best to avoid and support the local. While small my drink was tasty and pricey it was tasty and creative with an adorable name. I believe I had the PSL must die (Late witch sweet potato caramel). This wouldn't be a coffee shop I would frequent, I go to one about once a week, but definitely somewhere I would stop by to treat myself or if I was in the area. ACADEMY COFFEE SCHOOLED ME | ever since they moved to Virginia Highlands, I didn't visit until the end of 2022. I still remember at their first location, their menu included the surprise me option for a custom order beverage, which was fun, although a hit or miss if you were too vague with what you liked or didn't like. I'm glad to see they still offer it, although not available on weekends anymore. The PSL must die is as delicious as it is hilarious. I'll have to be honest, I am a PSL drinker but if only the PSL tasted like THIS, I would be drinking these every day. Super creamy and smooth without the overwhelming pumpkin spice flavor that attacks the coffee scene every fall. The Silver Bullet is a more subtle fall drink, but perfect if you're iced a year round iced coffee drinker like me. The apple sesame bourbon syrup is also interesting without being in your face FALL. Academy Coffee isn't your typical coffee shop - their seasonal menu changes make it fun to explore different drinks every visit. And the quality of the coffee and baristas are top notch. I was a little disappointed by how standoffish the baristas were but the coffee makes up for it! read more

I don't know if they have a MICHELIN Star but they should. In one word, quality. The coffee here is top tier. When they offer their seasonal drinks they don't just throw one or two syrups together. How come I'm just finding out about this place??! Located in the heart of VaHi, Academy Coffee shares a unique space with a butcher shop and local provisions store. Very easy to miss, to be honest. Once we found it, I was happy to see a drink menu as eclectic as the neighborhood that houses it. My husband ordered a Boots and Cats which is a gold beet and rosemary syrup latter. I ordered the Multiplex (upgraded to a latte) which includes a brown butter popcorn syrup. Maaaaan! Those drinks were sooooo smooth! Perfect ratio of syrup to milk to espresso. Just *chef's kiss*. The drinks are definitely on the pricier side, starting around $7, but very much worth it if you desire well executed coffee creations. No wonder the place was packed! Adding Academy to my favorite coffee shops in Atlanta list. The only thing that's missing is seating. Otherwise, it could dethrone my current faves. read more

First time in and I'll be back if I'm in the highlands! Sandwich menu looks great and everyone seated outside had one and a cup of coffee. On top of having great coffee they boast a full butcher selection with all kind of meats, cheeses, wine and even had caviar. The ambiance is clean and straightforward. Visited Academy this past Sunday on a beautiful fall day. The café is nestled on a cozy street and was bustling with a line that stretched to the door. Fortunately, the line moved quickly, and there were plenty of outdoor tables to soak in the autumn weather. Inside, the space is bright, welcoming, and thoughtfully decorated. What really impressed me was the diverse and creative drink menu. They offer more than just the usual coffee shop fare, featuring unique infusions and flavors alongside the classic drinks. I ordered the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, which is made using products from the butcher shop in the back. It was excellent--well-complemented by a flavorful aioli and peppery arugula. I paired it with an apple-infused coffee from their fall collection, which was perfectly seasoned. For the amount of time I have loved exploring Virginia Highland, I am shocked that I had not yet been to this establishment. I came here on Sunday morning to have a recovery brunch after a fun Saturday night out. I was not surprised to see many people coming and going inside, as people generally enjoy doing on Sunday mornings. I investigated the menu, which is not long but has amazing options. Not kidding, I couldn't decide whether to get a breakfast sandwich (breakfast menu 8a-5p) or one of the lunch ones (11a-5p). I settled on the Poultrygeist per the staff member's recommendation. For the coffee, I got the Coco Loco also based on her recommendation that it is their most popular. Both the coffee and the sandwich were heavenly. The chicken salad was not dry and had a taste that I would find hard to disagree with. The bacon was crispy, the arugula fresh. It's a great place to people watch as well. What a fun neighborhood coffee shop! The specials here are so unique, I had a hard time picking just one - so I didn't! I ended up trying the Figaro (a cortado with smoked fig and cacao) and the PSL Must Die (a latte with plantain and amaretto caramel). Wow, both were packed with flavor and perfectly balanced with the espresso. Plus, they were served at the ideal temperature, making each sip a delight. Very minimalist, modern, and pared down coffee spot! I would never have thought to order their breakfast sandwich, but my wife and her best friend HIGHLY recommended. I got the vegan patty and it was SO good! So flavorful! It was a soft, buttery bun and a red/pink patty. It wasn't crispy but every bite was SO full of flavor (no extra condiments needed). It was luxurious and such a treat for a lover of savory foods! They make a much better (and more unique) latte than Perc down the street. Oh Academy, I love you so much! The shop, the food, the coffee, the staff, the location. On a recent, longer-than-usual stay, I came across Academy Coffee on Yelp. My latte & sausage breakfast sandwich was so good, I ended up coming back the next morning & having the same latte & switched up to the bacon breakfast sandwich. So good! Cute shop with unique variety of coffee and sandwiches. However, it isn't really a sit down kind of place. They have street parking only. I went on a day that was not busy (midweek and 32F deg out) but I could see the neighborhood being really busy in warmer seasons. They have a items/merch/wine/oil type things for sale but a bit on the expensive side. Good for gifts, probably. The only really bad thing is that it is expensive. My small breakfast sandwich "single" was very good but $9 before tax and tip. My specialty latte was delicious but also $7 or so. I ended up paying close to $18 for these two items. Who can get breakfast for that much? I also tipped them even though I was getting take-away (not like you can sit inside anyway). So it was an expensive morning. Very tasty though. I hate to say this but service *could be better.* However, the barista making the coffee drinks had good customer service. Also, it was extremely hard to find this place because the address was wrong on Yelp. I just fixed it. The name of the shop is nowhere on the outside. Atmosphere: the coffee and butcher shop share the same space which I think is so smart! Breakfast sandwiches with coffee is a great combination. While they don't have real table seating inside, they have these cutest nooks in front of their windows that you can sit at (fits 2 people comfortably). They do have some seating outside in the front of the store if needed. While parking is limited, it's a fairly easy walk if you park in the neighborhood nearby! Everyone was really friendly. Food/drinks: I think their coffee selection, especially their specialties, are extremely unique. I had the bridagoon as recommended by the barista and a sip (or two haha) of my friend's shoto style. - Brigadoon: iced espresso tonic with blackberry, pink peppercorn, and scotch syrup - definitely aesthetic with the pink and dark colors of the espresso. Very fizzy, be careful mixing. This was definitely an interesting drink, personally I thought it was too fizzy (I'm also not a fan generally of seltzers and carbonated water so there's that) - Shoto style: iced latte with chamomile habanero honey and 18:21 tart cherry-saffron bitters - LOVED this! Don't worry about the habanero, it's not spicy but you can feel a little tingle in your throat as you keep drinking it. The flavors were great, would get again. - Breakfast sandwich (single): smoked veggie patty (they have bacon or sausage options too!), egg, and cheese on a brioche roll with duke's greens, and griddled red onions. The egg and patty on the sandwich was SO GOOD! Fluffy and made to perfection. - Gator belt: ground beef patty melt on Pullman bread with angry cukes, cheddar cheese, and griddled red onions. I had a bite of my friend's sandwich and I still dream about it. The umami flavors are amazing, and there's this ground mustard sauce they had on there that was just an explosion of flavor. Would definitely get again when I come back! Overall, highly recommend! Unique and interesting coffee specials and the sandwiches are amazing. read more

I really want to love academy. I've been numerous times over the years and they're one of the one shops that makes their own unique homemade flavors in all of Atlanta. And they rotate constantly! Super fun creative things like key lime graham cracker lattes etc. the problem is the syrups are too weak. It's so disappointing to pay $7-8 for an exciting latte and get that first drink and.... Coffee flavor, nothing else. I've asked to DOUBLE the syrup and still barely any flavor. It's not just me - any person I'm with I ask if they can taste anything in my latte and they assume it's just a plain latte. Please cook the syrups down more or add a lot more! read more

I would ask for less ice, because the cup sizes already can be pretty small. They have a nice little bench area to sit outside if you can snag it. They have some pretty unique drinks, so I would check those out, like the purple ube drink or purple butterfly pea tea drink. This place shares space with Kinship Butcher, so it is a 2 for 1 if you come here. You actually place your order and pay for both places at the same register. We came on a weekday in the morning and it was pretty crowded. All of the tables are outside as the inside is fairly small, and none of the tables were available. The menu is a letterboard behind the staff and was a cool design. I was tempted to get one of the breakfast sandwiches from Kinship but stuck to a latte instead. They have a small grocery section and random merch for sale, including stickers, one of which I got. My drink was ready quickly and was very tasty. The staff was super friendly and there ended up being a table available, but we opted to walk the pretty neighborhood and enjoy our drinks there instead. read more

I've heard so much hype about this place that I had to come try it. It's definitely a welcome addition to the Va-Hi neighborhood, and Connan was very friendly and personable. The aesthetic inside is lovely, and the service was great. They also have some beautiful, soft-looking Academy Coffee tees for sale in this gorgeous shade of purple, and I seriously might come back one day just to buy one of those, though I looked through the stack today and for now, they only have size S and M. Yesterday, I ordered a chai latte which was tasty, just a bit strong on the ginger for me. No harm done, though, I know everyone does theirs a bit differently, and objectively speaking it was really good. Today I ordered a Hercules Hercules (flat white with bay leaf and olive oil). I love me a good flat white, but I was a bit nervous about the additions -- the first few sips were sweet, oddly enough, so much so that I thought maybe I'd accidentally gotten a vanilla latte instead! But the flavor soon leveled out to what I'm more familiar with. They also sell some high-quality, creative pastries here as well: I got a kimchi buttermilk biscuit (yup, you read that right) that might be the best biscuit I've had to date (delightfully soft and crumbly) and an olive oil muffin that was moist and not overly sweet. All in all, this place definitely lives up to the "coffee mixologist" description I've seen thrown around. While my taste buds are not quite adventurous enough yet to try some of the other, more creative drinks, I can definitely tell that this is some seriously fine coffee, and I would stop in several more times at least, to try other things on the menu. read more

If you go through my Yelp reviews Im sure you'll see me say this a lot but... this place is probably my favorite coffee spot in Atlanta. First off, the menu changes seasonally. Their summer menu included a banana basil cold brew that was awesome, and currently their fall menu has a Jameson flavored iced latte that I haven't been unable to not order every time I go. Halloween they had an Ube flavored latte that was also really good. Can't wait for their winter menu to roll out soon. Their OG location was right off the beltline near Jake's Ice Cream and Glide Pizza, but that location closed during the pandemic, so I'm very glad they opened this brick and mortar spot, especially so close to where I live. The food here is good as well. Their breakfast sandwich is a bit gourmet and bougie but definitely worth a try. Well done team! Keep it goin. What is there to say without wasting your time? GO! My usual is a vanilla latte with oat milk which is always smooth and delicious. I have fallen in love also with the waddamalon which is an amazing refreshing watermelon drink on tap. Sometime it has more watermelon flavor on some days (those are the best days) but ALWAYS delicious. I fell in love with academy over quarantine when they were by Kroger street and I'm so happy they have the space they now deserve to create their drinks. It shows they care about making a quality drink. Also there is a butcher side that sells breakfast sandwiches and They have an area they sell fresh meat, butter, broths and some herbs..
