Took me too long to visit Cafe 59! We went on a Wednesday evening around 8 PM. Super quiet which was nice. We sat at a high top in the bar area. We started with the polenta wings in a honey sesame sauce. So so good. Hot and crunchy! They had a dinner specials menu available 5-10 so we both ordered off of that to take advantage. My boyfriend got the spicy duck stir fry and I got the 4 cheese grilled cheese with bacon and tomato soup. (There were 4 soup options to chose from!) everything was hot, tasty and well done. We also got cocktails from the bar that were delicious. Low key vibes. Definitely will be back. read more

This is another restaurant that we patronized for years and had to stop going to because the prices didn't match the quality or quantity of food. I miss Cafe 59...and used to overlook the fact that potato wedges aren't included with the sandwiches, the falafel burger is always mushy in the middle, they don't include enough dressing with their salads...and things are sloppily prepared. I overlooked all of that because they use whole foods and the taste was decent. Fast forward to 2025, I've included a photo of a turkey burgundy sandwich with a small bag of Lay's (weird choice, but ok) and a pickle spear, which costs $17.25 before you even add tax or tip. What?? I totally get that costs are rising for everyone including restaurants, but this isn't in line with what you can get at other places, even on the same street. If you can't sell your original menu at reasonable prices anymore, then you need to adjust it. We won't be back. read more

I rarely give a 1 star rating. There's people livihoods at stake. But this place wasn't it. It mostly definitely pass the vibe check. It's a simple but weird spot in Allentown. Which I liked. Photos and things around the place will keep you interested and can be a convo started. The staff were sweet. Super friendly. None of that should change. But the food was pretty awful. Came with a group, one baby and five adults and four of us thought the food was okay to bad. The only one who liked their food was the one who ordered a 59 Club. We ordered the Bourbon bowl, Teriyaki Stir Fry, Cafe Rueben, and 59 Club. I had the Bourbon bowl with shrimp. The shrimp was good seasoning but overcooked. The rice and vegetables tasted like it came from the frozen section and was microwaved. It was super disappointing. And it was cold. I didn't send it back because I'm not sure if there was anything that could have fixed it. And the kitchen was understaffed so it would have taken even more time. The fried polenta that my friend ordered with their stir fry was the only thing they liked on the plate. Their plate was at least warm they said. The one who ordered the Reuben, felt that the sandwich was rushed as the sandwich was falling apart. And that they could use more dressing since it was a bit dry. And lastly the one with the 59 club had no complaints. The drinks we ordered weren't too bad. There was a lot of interesting options. We went with Jump City, Sho Hey!, The Blinkus. The Sho Hey! Stopped here on my lunch break. They offer a full menu with plenty of breakfast/lunch and dinner options available all day. I opted for the BLT, which was a double- decker!! The 2 guys working behind the bar super friendly and helpful. There was plenty of seating inside and out. It looks like they may be adding more seating outside (in the process of being built). The only thing they did not offer was a selection of coffee drinks, but they do have a full bar with a drink menu. read more

This was a return trip for me. A few years ago I had their mussels and thought they were among the best I ever tasted. This visit was during the Allentown Art Festival and the place was mobbed! And for good reason. It was hot. Everyone was thirsty, and they had a special menu just for the festival so they were able to get people waited on and taken care of quickly. Many people were there just for the drinks. Everyone seemed very happy. I certainly enjoyed my sandwich. Not wanting typical dogs and sausage, I came here because they had a teriyaki portabella mushroom sandwich with roasted red peppers and a delicious bean soup at a reasonable price. Maybe it was the festival. Everyone was enjoying themselves, including the staff. This was a pleasant visit. There are no steps or other obstacles blocking access. While the restaurant was slow at the time we went the food still took a very long time to arrive. The chicken flavor was good, although not very spicy. The chicken was overcooked and overall did not live up to the hype. The meal cost was very expensive for what you receive. Overall, I am still looking for a fairly priced and high quality chicken finger sub. I think you can do better elsewhere. read more

I've been a couple of times now and while the vegetarian entrées I've tried are good, the polenta wings always leave something to be desired as far as texture and flavor. Their potato wedges however are SO good! They've got friendly enough staff and the artwork is cool to look at while waiting but it's always a little colder than I anticipate there and I'm not sure why. The waitress that seated me was ok up until she tossed the crackers on the table after the first packet was open and BOTH WERE STALE. The other waitress that walked in front of me twice in a very rude manner was ridiculous. The soup was super spicy but not seasoned very well. I watched how the other patrons were treated, I was never checked on until I was ready to cash out and it just wasn't a pleasant experience whatsoever. Thanks but no thanks. Lovely lunch spot in allentown! I got a quick bite with my mom here on a Thursday afternoon and was able to sit outside. It is located on a nice, quiet street corner. One thing I noticed: they don't have any normal soft drink options, they use a local brand that I forgot the name of. My mom is big on pop and didn't really like their options. I liked my coffee. Service was really quick and easy. Everything came out in a good amount of time. For such a small location, There is an extensive food and alcoholic drink menu, so plenty of options including burgers, pasta and cool appetizers. Anybody can find something they'll like here. Our food was great! Such a good fried fish, I was seriously surprised. Not only did it look good, but it was really well done. And I loved that special sauce they gave us. The potato wedges were also really tastey and unique. Greaatt quick casual food in an cute location. Nothing fancy but Reasonably priced and good service. Had dinner here last night with friends before the BPO fundraising concert for Ukraine. The space is very open, high ceilings, and local art on the walls. The bar is as you walk in, we sat at tables along Allen; great windows and light. The menu is large, and has something for all tastes/diets. Typically a large menu can mean lower quality, but our three dinners were excellent. I had the special broiled salmon with hummus on a Napa cabbage salad with roast carrots. Large portion, salmon cooked well, salad very fresh. Paired well with their Rose. The Mediterranean salad with falafel is gigantic; the picture doesn't do it justice. Very fresh, and the falafel was expertly cooked. Our third had the bourbon bowl with falafel; smaller, yet with the rice very filling and great taste. Beer menu is quite good as is the cocktail menu; wine list was short (unless I missed something). I will be back for certain! read more

Cafe 59 has a very nice selection of beers and an interesting mixed drink menu as well as a bunch of other alcoholic goodies that are not my usuals. Their take on an old fashioned greatly pleases this Kentucky girl. They've added Orange liqueur and Amaretto and it made me wonder why I never thought of that myself. The staff are very friendly and attentive. I've also had some very decent meals here. They do great fried pickles, falafels, meatballs, gigantic and interesting salads, and have really fun specials. I like the layout of the bar and restaurant space. It's easy to feel like you have your own private nook at the tall tables to the left or a place at the bar. Bathrooms are also clean and ungendered. After having a couple drinks at a birthday-happy hour down the street, it was pushing 7:30pm on a Friday and I was more than ready for dinner. I wanted to find a place that'd get me seated and food in front of me quickly. I met up with some family and after walking along Allen St., we came to Café 59 and, for the most part, had a good experience! We walked in around 7:30pm-7:45pm on a Friday night and were immediately seated at a high-table, close to their kitchen. Our waiter brought over menus, the drink list, and a couple waters to start with right out of the gate, which was excellent. It appeared to me that they were understaffed as I only saw 2-3 people waiting on customers the entire time we were there, and there were plenty of customers that night, so our service was a little slow - Our waiter did a nice job with us though! When looking at the draft beer specials, I saw a radler-style beer on their and was going to order that, but our waiter did me a solid and let me try it first and I'm glad I did - I ended up getting CBW's "Let's Go Pil's" instead. After we placed our food orders, the service kind of grinded to almost a halt as we waited probably close to 30 minutes for our meals to arrive. But as I said before, they appeared to be pretty understaffed and were handling it the best they could. For dinner, both of us ordered the Burgundy Burger (cooked medium), which is an 8oz. beef burger with field greens (think of the spring mix you'd find at the grocery store), red onion, Gorgonzola cheese, and topped with a red wine mayo and served with a side of potato wedges. The burger itself was pretty good. The standout, for me at least, was the red wine mayo. The burger was cooked perfectly and truly was hot, juicy, and delicious. The potato wedges were hot and crispy too and nicely sized. In terms of portion size, this was pretty good. Maybe a better lunch spot more so than dinner but I walked away satisfied. As for the cost, I thought it was pretty reasonable seeing as food prices and such are on the rise in 2021. After we ate, it did take almost another 30 minutes to pay for our meal as there had been a slight mix-up with another table. The bill we paid was actually cheaper - in essence, we had one of our burgers taken off! The staff were very apologetic and conscientious for the long waits and bill switch-a-roo, but again, we understood. Overall, I liked it here and the food was great! After reading about them on Yelp, I really want to come back here and order their (famous) chicken finger sub. :) read more

Cafe 59 is the restaurant I didn't know I needed in my life! My boyfriend and I recently moved downtown and have been looking for different spots for dependable takeout. I suggested we try here and I'm so glad I did! They have a pretty wide menu and one thing I found cool was that they offer different specials for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant is at a convenient corner location and the staff was really friendly. Inside there didn't appear to be a mass amount of seating but I'd love to dine in sometime. We started with the fried pickles which were delicious! Things like that don't always hold up after being in takeout containers but they were crispy and flavorful. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad wrap and when I tell you it was the best I've had, I'm not lying. My boyfriend got the salmon pesto wrap and he enjoyed his as well! We will certainly be ordering from here again. Legend has it that they have one of the best chicken finger subs in Buffalo and I need to get my hands on one very soon! read more

This place is absolutely fantastic. We stopped here for a late dinner following the Explore Buffalo Allentown Mob Tour. They gave us a coupon for a free beer or wine with the purchase of food following the tour. We were planning on stopping by here after the tour, but the coupon further enticed us. We both ordered from the specials. My mom had a salmon entree, which she said was delicious. I had the steak entree. It was a strip steak with onions and Asiago cheese on top, with a Caesar salad, and potato wedges. It was delicious. Our bill came to under $40.00 for a wonderful meal. The service was great as well. Took a friend out for their birthday to Cafe 59 and had a fabulous time! Our server had an amazing personality and was very helpful. On a weekday afternoon, the cafe wasn't too busy. We chose to sit in the dining room. It was cozy, bright, and tastefully decorated with healthy house plants. Big fan. The menu looked amazing and it was so hard deciding! Two of us ordered sandwiches, the other ordered risotto. All of our meals were delicious. I definitely recommend upgrading chips to the potato wedges. Two of us ordered the pink lemonade cider on tap and it's the perfect pint for a warm summery day. Also want to mention our meals came extremely fast! I was incredibly impressed. I love trying new restaurants when I travel and I get super excited when restaurants offer vegan and gluten friendly options. Upon arrival we felt very unwelcome because we were a party of 6. We were willing to wait and even split up to make it work since I am typically limited at other places and we had a long day sight seeing. While we waited we were trying to figure out the vibe of the place. Yelp says hipster something... music sucked, it was like an r & b "set the mood" kind of vibe and not good r & b either lol....definitely didn't feel like a hipster. We got the polenta wings. They were good. Nobody checked on us after they came out to see if we needed anything. My husband had his empty glass at the edge of the table for like 25 minutes and no one stopped to check in while we waited for the food. The staff seemed more worried about their side work than tending to the patrons. My husband said his impossible burger was a hockey puck. I got the Moroccan salad, it was good. Very interesting experience. Not sure I'd go back even if I did live around here. First impressions are everything. read more

Our boss was treating our department to a team lunch. One of our team mates is vegan, so she suggested we go to Cafe 59. She assured us there was food for "regular people" too. I was hesitant, at first because I was not in the mood for "rabbit" food. I'm glad I was out voted. The atmosphere is very hip and trendy, I felt like I was in a coffee shop in NYC. Our server was very attentive and very knowledgeable with the menu. We started out with the polenta " wings" . They are exactly what they sound like, a vegan take on the traditional chicken wing. I could of eaten the whole plate by myself. I didn't know what to expect since I've never had polenta. The patties were crispy and golden brown on the outside and creamy and soft on the inside. Pairing these tasty vegan wings with their homemade dips, my personal favorite was the paprika lime siracha, made me wish I didn't come with a group of people. I continued my vegan journey, with some "regular people" food: The Turkey Burger Special. I never had a turkey burger with a ricotta cheese basil pesto, but I sure was willing to give it a try! It was very smooth and very flavorful. The ricotta cheese added a slight sweetest which really added to the overall flavor profile of the burger, paired with homemade potato wedges, I was very pleased with my selection. I love this little place on Allen Street. This time I went for the chicken finger sub that is constantly raved about. It was pretty yummy, but nothing I would go back for. (I'm a big fan of the Wegmans' chicken finger subs). I did like the bbq sauce on the fingers, but my son felt it was "too spicy." Was a little disappointed that the sub roll wasn't sesame seed like other reviews had shown. For the side, we chose the potato wedges ($2 upgrade from chips), which were basically homemade steak fries. Nicely salted and a big portion. I'm sure we will be back, but I'll delve into another sandwich. I also can't resist their housemade focaccia bread that they serve with oil. I love that it's grilled and so fresh! We were staying around the corner and wanted somewhere we could order and pick up to eat in the room. Ordered food and picked it up within about 30 minutes. Food was decent, didn't blow me away and my whatever bread they gave my wife with the salad was pretty bad but decent food overall, although the cost was a bit high for the quality of food if i'm honest. I would have given them 4 stars but they are one of the restaurants that when you order online doesn't let you proceed without putting in a tip amount. I have my own issues with this. If i'm sitting down and get great service, I tip well, even if i get below par service I typically will tip, albeit a lower amount, but if i'm ordering online and all you're doing is making the food and i'm just picking it up, what am I tipping for ? What if you messed up my order ? What if something else was wrong with the order ...i've already paid a tip when you provided terrible service ?? Ate there yesterday before we left Buffalo after going to Teddy Roosevelt Inauguration Site. Food was delicious, good price and quick and polite service. They have I've menu for a bar restaurant. All of our food was great . I got the fish and chips which were great and a real piece of haddock not a chunk of fish. Would rate it a 5 but slaw was a little tart for my Texas taste. I prefer the Cafe 69 for obvious reasons, but if I want a slightly-fancy Chicken Finger sub that is really actually damn good, and I'm in downtown, this is where I'll come, so to speak. What to get: Chicken Finger Sub What else: Jumanji actually isn't a movie I've seen Cafe 79 is nowhere near as good, and they play the Bee Gees all the time. Alex L has a lot of food recommendations and so do I. His are usually in and around downtown, mine are usually in far-flung suburbs or faraway cities. He likes a good portion of my recs and I like a good portion of his. We have similar tastes but also good tastes. Says the guy who thinks he has good food tastes. Two people are never going to agree on everything though, not by any means. This is one of the places we agree wholeheartedly on. He brought me here to have the "best Chicken Finger Sub of my life", and while it's not the singular best (maybe Mike's in Kenmore and others are slightly better, or at the very least as good), this is actually a five star sub sandwich, and I really appreciated it. It was very well done. Cafe 89 is pretty good, until the wall (the Berlin one) falls down mid-meal. It's a couple of dollars more expensive than most of these kinds of sandwiches around town, but it's on Allen Street so you sort of expect that. Wait time took a little while, but there's a lot of weird and interesting art on the wall to look at, and it's a nice place to sit around and chat, so you won't mind. You get a lot of chips with this expensive sub... they should offer you a bunch of other stuff with it for no upcharge (the chicken fingers are unhealthy enough as it is). They don't, at least not for free, but then welcome to Allentown. Nevertheless, excellent sandwich and 5 stars. Which is out of character for me to give to a slightly overpriced and pretty hipstery place, but you know... the sandwich is that good that it has to be a 5 from me. Will be back to try other items. This is my first 3 star review, and I feel like it's warranted. Here's the breakdown -Atmosphere- This was a very bistro-like place with indoor and outdoor seating. Although it felt kinda tight, you could still go as a group of 3-4 people. As you enter, you're greeted by the bar and in the back is the dine-in seating (although they do take out as well). The main reason why I've given 3 stars though, is because of the service. However, I'll get to that later. -Food- I ordered the falafel burger, and it was spot on! The falafel itself tasted fresh and flavorful, the fries were clearly made in house, and it was very filling! -Things to Consider- 1) My main problem was with the waitress who was serving the four of us. Everything was fine up until we were almost done eating. My one friend had to leave early, so she told the waitress that she was pressed for time and then asked for her check (aka we wanted the checks split). The waitress then proceeded to take 10 minutes to bring us a check for the entire table, not what we asked. When we asked for separate checks, she took it back (very irritated with us) and eventually came back to have each of us pay separately. She didn't have my friend pay first either, so she ended up waiting ~20 minutes total to get out of there and nearly missed her deadline. read more
