Went back here the other night, hadn't been out this way in a while, but when I'm near Manor I always have Cafe 290 on my radar. This time it was for dinner, and they did not disappoint. Comfort Food is their middle name, and this place has daily lunch and dinner specials throughout the week (sweet!). We ordered the Chuck's Cheesy Chicken (CFC topped w/ queso, bacon, tomatoes, green onions) for $10.99, it comes w/ 2 sides, we got fried okra and a side salad. My other friend got the CFC w/ salad and mashed potatoes. Our CFC's were both awesome, and the portion size is large marge as you will be full. The steamed cabbage side looked great, my salad was fine, my friend's Italian dressing was really runny but the honey mustard was okay. The fried okra is the best I've had, and I just LOVE their jalapeno cornbread!! It really kicks major cornbread-ass, it was so good I asked for a little more and the waiter gave me a small bag to take home! YEEEE HAW!! They even have Arnold Palmers as a designated menu item (1/2 ice tea + 1/2 lemonade) and a plethora of nice desserts to choose from. I think this is one of the top places to go for comfort food w/ that small hometown feel. Okay. Why 5 stars? The bacon and egg sandwich is OUT OF THIS WORLD. We found this on Yelp..hate chains..prefer local fare. Cafe 290 doesn't disappoint. Visited on a Sunday morning..not too busy..attentive staff..coffee hot and tasty.. I got the bacon and egg sandwich with a fried egg, medium and home fries. My sister got the same with an over easy egg and hash browns. The sandwich is so large with Texas toast loaded with butter. A great place to dine. The food and service was extremely good because we had a large group. Would recommend this place to everyone.

This is the third time in two weeks. I have given them chance after chance to redeem themselves. I sat unattended, no drink order, no nothing for 12 min. Now that may not seem like along time for some, but I am here on a one hour lunch break and drive time is not included. So 12 min to even order a drink is TO Long. Now I have to shovel my food down, not enjoy my lunch break. This will be the last time I will come here for awhile. The food is good, but the wait is rediculous. read more

So coming from Houston where everything is deep fried and delicious, I was a little bummed the chicken fried steak was ehhh , the outer fried part had flavor and the steak was just bland and flavorless :( , our waitress was amazing (Shannon), but the steak didn't live up to its buzz in my opinion. The mashed potatoes were definitely 5 of 5 , fried okra 1 of 5 to be super nice about it lol , my girlfriend liked her chicken fried chicken , and her corn was great too (you can't mess that up honestly lol) . I ordered the teriyaki wings, kids tenders and slice of pecan pie. I really enjoyed the teriyaki wings, fries and ranch so I can't wait to go back! I didn't like the tenders, they were flavorless and over done. They gave me and extra slice of pie because my order did not go through their online system even though I was charged so that was nice of them. Hash brown was crispy and all you want in a hash brown! Food was prompt and our waitress was friendly. They have Happy hour $1.00 for all beer and wine, monday-Saturday from 2pm-5pm . Homemade cake, pie, and cheesecake. Grubhub pick up available. 4 TV on each corner of the restaurant. Booths and tables. On Sunday mornings they get extremely busy and service will be a lot slower. If you see the parking lot full... expect service to be slow. I came here twice. First time it was after their morning rush and closer to lunch on Sunday. Service was fast. Second visit, came at 10:30am on a Sunday and the wait for food and service was over 35+ minutes. I will definitely be returning to dine with them again outside their rush hours. Every time I come here the service is very good. Their breakfast is now served all day, which is great, and their waffles are the best (way better and way cleaner than "Waffle House.") I would have given them 5 stars if at least one of their beautiful waitresses would smile. Not that they have to, but as common courtesy. Decided to stop and try this small diner. No regrets! I ordered "The Big Country " and this was more than I could handle. The welcome was causal and immediate friendly service was provided. My drinks were delivered without time to waste. Wow I haven't had this attention with a great attitude to boot. The staff checks with each other to make sure no customer is waiting. Cafe 290 feels like something out of a movie and once I saw the cake on display I knew I came to the right place. I'm glad I was able to visit, and eat here after 73 years of it being open. Coming here feels like someone would come to after a high school football game. I ordered the Western Omelet it was good with there red salsa. It took a while for someone to acknowledge and seat us, and the food also took pretty long to be served. The food was piping hot. We ordered an omelette with chorizo - it was a little bland until you added the salsa to it and it was very oily. I never got my side of texas toast. We also ordered the big country (i think) - eggs, biscuits with gravy, bacon, and hashbrowns. the biscuits were very fluffy- the gravy was a little under-seasoned. the prices were super cheap and the food did what it was supposed to. My daughter and I went to eat at 7:30pm on a Thursday night. When we walked in, there were 3 other tables seated and 3-4 ladies working the front, but unnoticed only one girl was waitressing. We sat down, got our drink orders from one girl and she told us our waitress would be with us. We knew exactly what we wanted and the waitress wasn't helping other people, so we were just sitting there waiting. During this time, the three other girls behind the counter are talking, stuffing napkins/silverware, etc. our order finally gets taken and the waitress is nice and is super speedy, so I'm unsure why it took so long to grab our order. We were ready to go around 8:30pm and they close at 9pm. The kitchen was already cleaning up when they got a phone order for 5 meat plates. The cook told the waitress "no more big orders". I'm sorry but if the restaurant closes at 9, the grill stays hot til 9. This review isn't necessarily about the waitress but more so the efficiency of the staff. I don't understand why they have FOUR people working the front if only ONE person is waiting tables. All four of those people should have been waiting tables or at least helping to do so. Had to add salt and pepper and that still didn't save it. Omelette came with a biscuit that was way too dense, I prefer mine light and fluffy, and grits that were way too sweet and watery. I also ordered French toast, which was the only decent thing I had from there. Still wouldn't order it again though. I have to say I'm surprised Café 290 doesn't have more reviews, considering that both times I've been here the joint was busier than a Furr's next to the Geriatric Chateau on Easter. Expect that on weekends service will probably stink, because the trio of harried waitresses can't possibly keep up with a whole restaurant between the three of them. You're going to have to flag them down for refills or napkins or what-have-you, but please remember it's not their fault--it's management's. And the food is worth it, anyway. Because in all honesty, Café 290 is home of the best breakfast I've ever had in Austin. Forget Kerbey Lane, Magnolia, or Dan's. This place is the biscuits and gravy mecca--to create real perfection, just crumble two sausage patties on top of your steamin'-hot-drowned-biscuit-goodness and give it a shake of Tabasco. Their hashbrowns and eggs aren't anything to sneeze at, either. Order the Big Country breakfast. You will thank me. Your waistline will not. Check out the pictures I uploaded--the Big Country breakfast is TWO WHOLE PLATES of food. From the dinner menu I've had Chuck's Cheesy Chicken and the chicken-fried NY strip. Chuck's Cheesy Chicken is what I like to call "gross good"--an amazingly unhealthy dish that is sinfully delicious (and will likely leave you feeling pretty gross, since you inevitably overeat). Fried chicken, smothered in queso and topped with bacon, tomatoes, and green onions? Sign me up. Throw some delicious fried okra and loaded mashed potatoes on the side, and you can bet I'm unbuttoning my pants before this meal is over. The chicken-fried NY strip is about as good as chicken-fried beef gets, but it's still pounded thin in the traditional way and cooked through. Does anyone else think that there *must* be a better method? I'm not very serious about many things in life, but meat and fried grub are serious bid'ness, folks. I'm considering buying some nice NY strips, searing them to "rare-ness," blotting them meticulously, and SUBSEQUENTLY battering and chicken-frying. The wait is forever. We came here for breakfast and they served our food to the wrong table. Once the realized the order was wrong because we alerted them, they pulled the food off the table and took it back to the kitchen. Tip toeing through the tulips to the city of Manor for lunch every there months or so just to have lunch with a friend who lives there. We always go to the 290 Café because it has my kind of meat and tater food, just good old plain American food. Jeepers I forgot my camera again. They have a daily special Monday thru Friday sometimes I get it and sometimes I order form the menu. I like the chicken and dumplings on Mondays and the meatloaf on Fridays. I have also tried the chicken fried steak. As for sides I have tried the mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, French fries, salad, and cabbage. I like them all. There is an extensive menu for lunch and dinner, they also serve breakfast. I am sad to say I have never had breakfast here. The restaurant is old and has been around awhile and the locals love it. The inside has tables and booths and the wear is showing on the floor and tables. It is clean and the staff has always been very good and the food has always arrived in a short period of time and hot. I will admit sometimes it is better than others but most of the time good. The cost of the food seems fair to me. As for desert I have never had any here. So overall I like it. So I seem to be eating a lot of plain good American style food lately. This is a place for blue collar and pickup drivers not so much for Yuppies that drive BMWs and Cadillac's. Although if you dress in jeans and a cowboy shirt and hat you may like it anyway. I had the "Ultimate" chicken fried steak. The description said it was "chicken fried NY strip steak." If it was NY strip, I couldn't tell. The steak inside all the batter was between 1/8-1/4" thick. It was good, but not any better than any other plain chicken fried steak I've had. It was pricey for what I got. My sides were loaded mashed potatoes and green beans. The green beans were very good. The potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. My partner had a burger and onion rings. She said the burger tasted like a frozen patty. We both liked the onion rings. I wanted pie for dessert. The waitress talked both of us into the peach cobbler. It was very pricey for a little cup and tasted like the stuff you get at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Neither of us ate more than a few bites of it. Our waitress was nice but flakey. Service was very slow and we had to get another waitress to refill our drinks.
