Unfortunately this location is going through its teething troubles. First of all it took way too long to get a server to check with us after sitting down. There were plenty of staff available and in fact I noted about five or six people standing at the end of the kitchen on their phones while the chef was busting his butt to get orders out. I ordered a simple double bacon cheeseburger which, at any other restaurant in the country, means you get a double patty. The burger came out greasy and tiny and with only one patty. I complained to the server who tried to tell me that it was just smashed down. I insisted on getting two patties and she took the plate back to get the requested add. She also added a charge for the patty. This place may someday be worth a visit but they need to get a lot of problems fixed. Very disappointed.

It is a free event today handing out free breakfast food for everyone. Met some official looking staff as well as city officials. Even the Popo showed up for breakfast. Enjoyed seeing them take part in this opening. An important part of a city's growth and getting to meet everyone. It's was crowded and very loud being a festive event. Waffle House has a clean atmosphere. The aromatic smell of coffee and frying food as you come in. It is Manor coming in through those front doors greeting the day. A wonderful sight and experience!

The entire premise was clean and the prices were very reasonable. We are heading back to try the breakfast on Sunday.

It should be mentioned, that the noise level here is fairly high with all the patrons and children. They do have outdoor seating, including both an inside and outside breakfast bar. The first bar of measurement is the coffee. We were served a dark roast, which is somewhat comparable to what you get at Starbucks, but I'm not a fan of those creamer pods 3*. The good news is that they bring you an endless pot of coffee. We ordered the blueberry lemon cornbread in hopes that it come out first, but they forgot it. When it arrived, it was topped with a lemon custard. I'd recommend skipping the pancake and go with this choice, although it did remind me of that Jiffy cornbread with freeze dried blueberries. We chose the Athlete and the trifecta. Those choices were basically good and some yelpers draw comparisons to Denny's, but we thought it was a little better. For the money, it's worth a return visit. Service was also attentive. You can pay with a QR code on your receipt or visit the checkout station where the tip screen starts at 18%. Some additional points of interest is the fact that you will have to ask for water, I was pleased to see that they do offer real maple syrup for an additional charge, no credit card fee and there is ample parking. I think I should have gone with a meat-based vermicelli, as I missed some of that flavor, but it was all very fresh and tasty nonetheless. My husband had the pan fried noodles, which were sooo good. I forgot to take a picture of the pork dumplings until after I stuffed my face because I was so hungry but they were delicious. They've decorated the restaurant very cutely, and though it doesn't knock your socks off, I think that's preferable because the food does all the talking.

Inside you'll spot three restaurants and a coffee bar. One of them is this burger place. It should be noted, they also have another location like this on East MLK near the tollway. There's lots of seating inside and each order takes about 5-10 minutes to prepare. What sets this burger place apart from their competitors is their use of roasted Hatch green chilies and their "Magic" sauce. You can also add jalapeños for free and bacon for just a dollar more. If you get the combo, you can upgrade to a shake for just two dollars more. Let's start with the star of the show which is the burger. I got the double cheese with bacon and I have to admit it met all my expectations. The bun is not your typical white bread, I was told it's called a "euro bun". The roasted chilies added just a subtle note of heat. As for the chocolate shake, it was pretty similar to what you'd get at In-N-Out Burger and the previously frozen fries were fairly average, not home cut. As far as burgers go, I would definitely add this place to your "go to" list for good and unique burgers that deliver for the money. Another unique aspect of this operation, is that they do serve frozen daiquiris in case you need an alcoholic kick. Eight photos included for more insight.

Went to the Cafe 290 last week. This place still rocks comfort food. I had the Big Country breakfast that includes all my favorites: eggs, bacon, chunky hash browns, two big fluffy biscuits & gravy, and a bottomless cup of premium coffee. I don't know of any restaurant in the Austin area that can pull off the big breakfast better. Maybe Hoovers, but I'll have to report on that at a later date. If eggs and bacon are not your thing, try the their Texas French toast with toasted candied pecans on top. If you miss breakfast ending at 11AM then try their Roadhouse Cheeseburger with the biggest crunchy onion rings in town. Compare to Huts or Waterloo, you'll agree. If you miss Lunch, then get there for dinner. These guys know chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken breast. It's as big as the plate. I think the Cafe 290 must be boot camp for learning the art of the deep fry. They even offer brown or white gravy. What other cafe does that? If you still have room for dessert the meringue pies are all good. I like to take a slice home and have tried them all. My one complaint is that I would like to wash it all down with a cold beer but will have to settle for big ice tea or an Arnold Palmer. Service is always friendly and efficient. If the cafe is crowded your meal may take a bit longer than you normally expect but that's because it's all being made fresh and that makes it worth the wait and worth the trip from Austin to Manor. read more

Very good Texas food. Chicken fried steak was very good and tasty. The gravy did not appear to be homemade in my opinion. The catfish was good and fresh and tasty. Their tartar sauce had a funky little ting to it which tastes like cloves but when you pair it with the lemon it tastes just right. The waitress was very busy and informed us that she was alone that day and so I just didn't get all the bells and whistles that I like seeing that I'm exhausted and need help. For instance having to ask to have my tea refilled, having to ask to have a bag for my to go items, having to ask to have lemon for my catfish. Typically lemon is served with catfish maybe they don't do it there. She was a nice lady she was working hard but I just can't say that she was just fabulous because I need those little extra special touches. She didn't check back and asked how things were. I don't know it almost kind of made me feel disrespected like she didn't like me. To be honest. But the food was on point. Fried mushrooms were good. I do recommend it. Regardless she was tipped well and I'm hopeful that my feedback will improve her customer service going forward. And yes I know she's busy. And yes I've waited tables. JS. Ever wonder what it's like to go to a 'small town diner or cafe' just like in the movies? The kind where the atmosphere is positive, the service is great, and the food is talked about miles 'round? Well this is the place for you! Right outside of Austin, on the way to Houston, it's conveniently located right off 290 so you can quickly hop off the highway and grab a bite to eat. The waitstaff is pleasant, friendly, and happy to accommodate all your needs while you're there even if you're a super picky eater like me! My wife and I have started going there almost every Sunday morning for brunch - she happily ranks their grits as the best in the world. I also love their dinner offerings - specifically the nachos and the chicken fried steak! It feels like we're all one big family and feels right at home. Nope! Never again. I went in the other day and sat in a booth that I'm 100% sure a dead rodent is under the seat. I had to smell it the whole time, pretty hard to eat that way. Some man named Jake was talking very rudely to the wait staff. I used to love the food.... Well I am not sure what happened or who they have cooking but they need to replace them. It's not like it used to be that's for sure. I would rather take my business to good luck grill from now on. I can't even imagine how anyone that works there as a waitress could work for that rude owner Jake. Great location, wait staff is nice, love the pie- but definitely not going back there. read more

I came to this place expecting something new and good.But I got the exact opposite they messed my order up I asked for orange juice and I got Dr Pepper how do you confuse them like cmon man if your gonna be taking orders take them right.I also asked for the 290 but instead I got something totally different my disappointment is unmeasurable and I do not recommend this place at all.If you think bringing the family to this place is a good idea think again because this place is horrible I got dirty silverware it was not clean it had old food residue on it.The chair I sat on was stuck to a piece to the wood floor tile. read more

2 words: cheesy chicken! If you happen to find yourself in the Austin, Elgin, Manor, Pflugerville area go to cafe 290. and have the cheesy chicken! Its a chicken fried steak covered in queso! And they have got every side you can possibly want. The wife had fried green tomatoes and broccoli rice casserole. The kid had corn, carrots, and green beans. I had mashed potato casserole. I really wanted to like this place, but the food quality made the entire experience disappointing. Everything we ordered tasted tired, as if it had been sitting around far too long before reaching the table. The flavors were flat, the textures were off, and nothing felt freshly prepared. Even the simplest items lacked seasoning and came out either lukewarm or oddly overcooked. For the prices they charge, I expected at least a decent meal, but instead it felt like an afterthought. We had Thanksgiving dinner at Café 290 yesterday and were truly pleased! Our group of 16 found Manor, Texas a convenient location (because we came from Houston, Austin, San Antonio and El Paso). This was a first, because we usually eat Thanksgiving at home. The atmosphere was very home-like, the staff treated us better than family and the food was excellent and plentiful. We would have stayed longer, but there was just no really good place to take a nap. The restrooms were very clean and well appointed. We'll do this again. read more

We were in on Sunday night, and let me say the food was great as was the service. I had the Chicken Fried Chicken and my husband had a Cheeseburger, both were excellent. All though they were super busy the waiter was great and very professional as was the lady manager, they always found time to check on us. The one thing that kind of turned us off was that they were putting their silverware in a bucket and they were wiping it down and then rolling. Café 290 was so gracious to our family this past weekend. We were mourning the death our Lance Thomas and needed to meet as a family. They accommodated us with no problem. The burger was decent and was better than other places that offered burgers in town. I would order a dine in burger from here again and try other items on the menu. Maybe second time is a charm? :)

What a mistake and I knew as soon as I walked in I had messed up. First of all the place is ghetto and no one was behind the counter - very common among reviews. I ordered a cheeseburger to go and one for dining in, I even made sure to confirm with the lady 3 times. Obviously english is not her first language so I was trying to be very clear. The tables were completely dirty (despite counter lady having all the time in the world to clean), the floor was filthy and the chairs were wobbly, like we might fall wobbly. There is no rhyme or reason to the dining setup. The bathroom was bad, real bad, also mentioned in many reviews, but obviously no one cares or reads reviews. We were waiting a long time and it was not busy at all. Other patrons were making comments about how long it was taking. You'll see other reviews that also mention absurd wait times, cooks must be in the back smoking. Finally she drops only the to go order. It had been 30 minutes at this point, 30 minutes at a burger joint where each customer should only take 3 minutes to cook for. Even if the entire place was filled to capacity one blind cook with a missing arm could get food out faster. At this point about 8 more people had come in and the lady at the counter said oh we can make you one when I went up to make sure I wasn't double charged, but hard no. I just waited 30 minutes for 1 hamburger, I couldn't imagine waiting in line behind 8 people, Id still be there and Raganarok would be happening outside. I can tell they do not read or take reviews serious as some of these same issues are over a month old. For anyone looking to open a restaurant in a decent part of austin this space will be available soon.
