Cafe 290 might not be for everyone, which suits me fine. Because then I have the place all to myself and I'm an only child so sharing doesn't come naturally to me anyway. But. The service here is friendly and their coffee (of which I was served plenty) is spectacular. There's a high school kid who has permagrin and can wipe the bad mood of anyone's face. The food is your general truckstop fare: things are fried, things are battered. There's an abundance of bacon and gravy covered items on the menu. I usually am so stuffed by the time I make it through breakfast that I can't get to the pies (which may be for the best). They also have one of the best play lists around. Really? I grew up in Manor and used to work here. Sadly this place has gone down hill. food is pretty good. Michael is great. But last few times we have gone he wasnt there so we got crappy service. the table wanted a basket of fries for an appetizer, when the bill came we were charged 8.00 for fries, we called manager over she rang up as "fried green tomatoes" SUB fries. Manager ( tall blonde guy) then proceeds to tell me well we did receive a larger portion that what would have came with the meal.. Under new ownership; hope this creates better management. Food is for the most part good; however service can be either way. The managers need to learn how to manage; engage with the guest. After a long night, hubby and I were up way earlier than was really tasteful for us, and for some reason the early morning air stirs cravings of fried eggs, meat, and toast in the pit of my stomach. It was between the good old Magnolia and Cafe 290, which we hadn't had a chance to try yet, so we drove down to Manor and almost missed it! After a sharp turn into the lot, we walked in. Small town diner/cafe vibe all the way, and it had been a long time since I'd felt anything like that. Hubby got the chicken friend steak breakfast with biscuits and grits, and an Arnold Palmer. YUM. I chose the steak and eggs breakfast with home fries and toast. Sweet tea to me is one of the gauges of a good restaurant and the sweet tea at Cafe 290 is delicious. Our waitress was an elderly lady who was very, very sweet. The food came out in about 10 minutes. The biscuits on hubby's plate were HUGE. We were informed "We didn't have grits today so I got you home fries." Luckily we're not picky. The steak wasn't cooked medium rare, but it was still super yummy, and for 8 bucks I can't complain too much. Overall everything could have used more salt, but we remedied that at the table. There are lots of other things on the menu that tickled my fancy so we'll probably be back when we want a nice, quiet, calm breakfast with no frills food and good service. Cafe 290 used to be fabulous and then went downhill with prices going up and portions going down. No more! Andy (the former and now current owner again) has things headed in the right direction. Service is getting better, the decor is much better and prices have been lowered to a reasonable price for a cafe. It is nice to see a former institution of dining return to its former glory! Its been a long time since I've had such a bad experience at a restaurant. I decided to try this place on my lunch break. I started with coffee and cream. It took the waiter forever to remember to bring cream. Then he couldn't keep my coffee filled. Several regulars came in after I placed my order. They were all served their orders before mine even though mine was in the serving window. When the waiter finally tried to serve my chicken livers, he couldn't remember which of the his 4 tables it went to. And the food was bad. Now that might have been because it sat under the heat lamps for easily 15 minutes. I doubt that I'll try this place a second time. read more

Until the last two visits to Cafe 290 I was a huge fan. We were regulars. Now, if I ever go back it will be a while. Last week when I went, I ordered a burrito without onions. When my food came out, there was onions in the first bite. (I'm allergic) So I asked the waitress to have it remade, and to put the one that was not right in a to-go box. That we would still pay for it. The waitress goes and asks the chef for a new one, and to put the other one in a to-go box. The chef argued with her where we could hear about how that one didn't have onions. The manager didn't seem to care. So, finally after everyone else at my table was done eating, my food finally came out. Today when we went all of our food was either cold, or barely warm. I'm not sure why that was. We didn't send it back because of the last incident. When we sat down we had asked for teas with easy/light ice. Our waitress seemed to have forgotten and put extra ice. read more

I love this place. Country small town family owner feel. Food has that home cooking taste. I had a delicious Cobb salad there last time I went and let me tell you, that salad was legit. We've eaten there many times though and I've had everything from breakfast to big country dinners and it never disappoints. Make sure you check out the dessert case at the front. I recently moved to manor so I may trying the local places first. My brother and I have been there twice and I want there once with my gf for breakfast. Lunch was good not great. I got the chicken fried chicken which was good. Brother got a burger which was good as well. Breakfast was okay not very good. I got eggs, sausage, hash browns and pancakes with chocolate chips. Eggs were okay sausages was burnt on one side, hash which I ask for crispy was really greasy and not crispy. Pancakes were great. My Gf got French toast eggs hash browns and bacon. She said everything was good besides the bacon. So 3 stars for now I might change it after a few more tries since it's so close. read more

We went here for dinner on a whim, having passed by many times but never stopping. It was Thursday night, so their small sized chicken fried steak was on sale. Being a CFS lover made the decision on what to order pretty easy. The food was pretty good. One thing that really stood out were the loaded mashed potatoes. They included green onions, bacon, and cheese - basically a mashed baked potato. My wife also ordered some fried green tomatoes which were very good. So why only three stars? Value for the money. The food was OK, but it was fairly pricey. The fried green tomatoes consisted of 5 slices about three and a half inches in diameter. The CFS, while a decent value at a sale price, is pretty darn expensive for the "normal" price. I would really like to give 3.5 stars, but I'll settle for 3 in this case. read more

We have been going here in between our two soccer games on Sunday mornings. My teammates always look forward to games near this restaurant so we can grab a great breakfast before our second game of the day. The service is great - letting us pull several tables together for more teammates and the food is wonderful. I split the Vanilla special - sausage, eggs, and waffles with strawberries - it was super yummy. I can't wait to go back and this time I might not split it :) Last time one of my friends accidentally left her glasses on the table and our server ran out to the parking lot to return them - now that is service! I went to the Cafe 290 today and I was really disappointed. Well, let me say that I have been going to Cafe 290 for over 10 years and I always had a great time. Good food, great conversation and great ambiance, but today not so. The waitress was a little slow, but she was polite. When it came time for the check, I went up to the counter to pay for my check and one of the owners was talking with another customer about directions. I tried to get his attention that I wanted to check out and he just ignored me. I stood there for about 5 minutes waiting for him to acknowledge, but he never did. This older white man just stood there joking and talking with this customer while I just stood there to be checked out. I then just walked around the café until I found a waitress and paid my bill. I felt invisible and disrespected. Maybe it doesn't sound like much, but it was humiliating for me. We have lived in Manor pretty much all of our lives. As adults we bought our first home here in 2006. Cafe 290 has been here well before we were and they have always been spot-on when it comes to flavor, quantity, customer service, and hospitality. There was a spell where they went through either change of owner or management and it was rough but we stuck by them. We went there for breakfast today and tried some of their new menu items. the carne guisada omelette, for example was amazing. The only negative (not really negative but constructive) thing I would ever say about this place is they do need to reinvest into the building as the floor has weak spots and the linoleum tile is very outdated. But i know they will get to it as profits allow. Keep up the great work Cafe 290. See you again soon! read more

Cafe 290 is great if you know what to order: traditional breakfast food, the burgers, and I haven't had it but their pie looks awesome. This is a standard spot for us for breakfast on the weekends. It's not fancy and the service is a little slow but not terrible. Even when they are packed to the gills you get seated pretty much immediately. Word to the wise, coffee isn't great, probably just Folgers drip, but most people don't seem to mind. Omelets, biscuits, and especially the pancakes are hella good. My husband got their burger once and was really blown away. I would probably avoid their Mexican selections and any salads, this is a small town diner. Stick to the basics and you'll love this local spot. read more

I like to encourage local businesses and I'll let a lot slide before I say anything, realizing that they're just trying to do a job. I especially love local diners. However, everything was so poorly and unprofessionally done here that I just couldn't believe it. Its continued existence I can only attribute to the fact that until recently there wasn't much choice in Manor. They should notice that that has changed. We were short on time so we figured we'd get takeout. We put in a simple order online, and I figured that since it was the lunch rush, I'd wait another ten minutes before picking it up. I get there and there is NO parking. At all. People parked illegally all over. I find a semi-legal space, figuring I'll just be in there for a minute (HA) and run in. To my surprise, the place is way more than half empty. They must have to bus people in to fill it up because there is absolutely nowhere for them to park. Despite its emptiness, there is a "please wait to be seated" sign and no indication of where to pick up to go orders. No big deal, I'll ask the host when he/she is back. There's no host. The waitstaff apparently just seats tables at random when they have a minute, and they are not in a hurry about it. Every person found at least five things to do before they came back to the line. There were three people in front of me but it took probably seven minutes to get to me. Finally one of the servers comes up and I tell her I'm just picking up an order. She asks the name and walks off. She then proceeds to serve food to three other tables, take and fill a drink order, and refill coffee. Let me add that serving food involves taking the main dish from the kitchen window and dishing up sides/applying gravy themselves from a bar behind the pastry case, so this is not a quick process. Finally she wanders back over (there is a substantial line behind me at this point, although people keep leaving and I do not blame them) and I ask her what's happening. She says, "Oh yeah, what's the name?" and, pretty exasperated by this point, I give it to her again. She goes back to the kitchen window and calls, "Hey, do you have a to go order for [name]?" While she's trying and failing to figure out where it is, some other girl tells me rudely to go wait at the register. Finally she figures out that it's directly behind her on the bar where she has been dishing up sides but I still have to wait for her to bag it. By this time it's been well over twenty minutes. I deeply regret paying in advance because otherwise I would have left. Oh and when we ate the food it was mediocre at best and way overpriced. The queso looked and tasted like it was made with velveeta; the fries were clearly frozen and somehow cooked in a way to make them limp and bland and there was a small handful; the pulled pork was FULL of huge lumps of fat; the burger was dry. I had ample time to watch them serving other dishes and none of them looked appetizing. I wouldn't go back even if it was still the only option in Manor. read more

My son and I have been here several times and usually the food is outstanding. Not anymore. We stopped for dinner on Sunday, Sept 29 and were do disappointed. My son ordered the fried pork chop. It was less than 1/4 of an inch thick and covered with so much breading that it doubled in size. It was also so overcooked that he said it was like eating pork chips. I ordered the chicken fried chicken. Again, there was so much breading it was hard to tell where the chicken was. The cook clearly is out of his element because on both dishes the crust simply surrounded the meat and made a shell. Once it was cracked open, it didn't stay attached to the meat. Something an egg wash would prevent. The only highlight was the peach cobbler, which was flavored well. But for $37, I want more than a decent cobbler. Sadly, we won't be back. read more

I really enjoy the variety of food they have. The American is good ol' country style and the Mexican food is pretty amazing too. We've had breakfast there as well which is a bang for the buck! I've eaten several times at the Manor 290 Cafe and the food has been consistent and delicious. They have the best fried green tomatoes I've ever eaten. The batter doesn't fall apart when you cut into it. I love the chicken fried chicken topped with queso, bacon, onions and tomatoes. Their mashed potatoes with bacon, onions, cheese and sour cream are also pretty yummy.
