I do not pretend to be a expert on the coffee NYC has to offer, but of the 8 to 10 days of traveling I have done there over the last couple month- I have hit a new coffee shop on the NYTimes best of list each day. At this point it is moot to say, but Grumpy is definitely one of my favorite cafes in North Brooklyn. Good variety of seating options (which is important at a cafe, I maintain), awesome music (actually, one of the baristas introduced me to one of my favorite artists, Thomas Mapfumo), great baristas, and of course, their roasting is amazing - far better than anything else I've had in NYC. Finding Grumpy improved my quality of life markedly, when I lived in Brooklyn. read more

Coffee is good , customer service needs a little work.

A fine coffee shop in all respects, with of course some of the best coffee but, despite this and the comfortable seating and ambiance and oftentimes excellent music curation by baristas (Stockhausen, Messiaen, etc) it is really no longer an appealing place to work because there is almost always some photographer/ videographer/ interviewer making everyone self conscious and causing general tumult and overall compromising the anonymity and tranquility that make coffee shops somewhat appealing. Ultimately, it feels ever more low brow and uncool, sure, but what's worse is that one feels complicit in the gradual complete commodification of Brooklyn. It even makes one question consuming good coffee! So now I usually avoid Cafe Grumpy for all but beans, and stick to some of the still anonymous, innocuous, coffee shops around, but I do still regularly give it a chance. (But, a note to the management- if the situation improves, I'll surely regain my perch in the corner, and sit there blissfully dissertating for hours). read more

I just don't understand how anyone can rate this "as good as it gets". It's okay. Spacious coffee shop in an otherwise crowded city.

The drip coffee here is about as good as it gets anywhere. They use the Clover brewing machine which was developed by Stanford people. I personally like the Clover system. It gives a really flavorful and clean cup of coffee if it is used correctly. Grumpy appears to know how to use it correctly and they take care when brewing. I've never had a bad cup of coffee from here. This is the Greenpoint location where they roast their beans, which is cool to see. I took off one star because of a confusing and indifferent experience I had at the counter. The coffee is superb though. read more

i like coffee. i'm often grumpy. without morning coffee, i'm borderline hostile. enter Cafe Grumpy. perhaps the most perfectly named coffee shop in existence. awesome coffee by the cup, drip, americano, espresso, whatever, and you've got plenty of carribean, south american, african, and other origins from which to choose. great service behind the counter and half price refills on already reasonably priced coffee (even if you run away for 30 minutes to move your vehicle and leave them your cup at the counter, ready with coffee when you return). great sign, corner location just far away from the madness, high ceilings, sunny spacious layout, plenty of tables, newspapers scattered around, a couple couches, banter, a goodly grab-bag of people, and some offbeat great tunes make grumpys a perfect spot for some reading, writing, studying, or just some good old conversation. they also have brooklyn beer. if you need it. and sometimes when the shakes set in (caffeine induced or delerium tremens or both), you might. for me, worth the drive or ride across brooklyn, especially on some leisurely winter day. read more

The cappuccino is the best you will ever have. The shorter female barista needs to get a new job, she is clearly very unhappy and it is a drag on everyone else. I'll give it three stars, but if you go during the weekend she's not there - then it goes to five stars. read more

when i first visited Cafe Grumpy almost a year ago, i couldn't have imagined i'd be back as often as i have. located in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn, it's not the most convenient location to get to but well worth the journey. these days the cafe serves coffees from Counter Culture Coffee and Ecco Caffe. i've always been drawn to their espresso and French press coffee service. the owner makes delicious brownies and banana bread. over the summer they began carrying Balthazar pastries as well. the baristas pull good espresso drinks on a 2-group Synesso espresso machine. there are several tables with one large table with bench seating. art work is on display in the cafe, however, one would be remiss to not visit the gallery in the rear. on occasion there is live music and art openings. with a second shop opening shortly in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, you'll have one more reason to be "grumpy". read more

Alright, when I first moved to Diamond, I was completely oblivious to the fact that this place was a few doors down from my apartment and would walk all the way to Champion for my fix. Although I love Champion, I'm glad I found Grumpy, not just for its convenience, but goddamn they make amazing coffee! I've only had their clover coffees, but that's my thing, black roasted gold. Their clover coffee ranges in price depending on roast (most recently its been 2.75 - 8.75...yes that's per cup). These are rotated fairly often, depending on supply. The baristas are intelligent, friendly and know what their doing. Inside is spacious, with papers, magazines and a book shelf. The music being played ranges from jazz-punk, but usually doesn't interfere with what you're setting out to do. The ambiance is intoxicating and relaxing. This is probably one of the most legit cafes I have been to in the northern part of Brooklyn, but watch out, its very popular and despite the ample amounts of seating, space fills up quickly. read more

I was super reluctant to visit Grumpy on account of the Girls link (hey, I really like the show but I don't want to go all Sex and the City tour, you know?), but I badly needed a place to work and Yelp told me this was a good place to work. Yelp was right! Day after day I came here to bang out a university assignment and then write what felt like endless job applications for Sydney in the back room. (That was one hell of a holiday.) The place looks deceptively small, but out back is a (usually) hushed cavern of wooden tables and powerpoints and wifi. I don't drink coffee so have no idea what that's like at Grumpy; I'd always get the chai and depending on who was making it there was mixed results. Sean (Shaun?) is the man; he was always super sweet to me and hooked me up (thanks Sean). And no one seemed to mind that I was sitting there for hours on like two mugs of chai, and occasionally sneaking outside to eat some rabbit food. read more

The barometer of a coffee shop's quality is the cappuccino for me. So simple, yet so difficult to get right. Most places make them too big, and then you've basically got a latte with extra foam. I hate that. When I go to Grumpy, I don't need to hate. They respect the size of the cappuccino. They have deep love for the third/third/third ratio of espresso/milk/foam. They understand that it will taste infinitely better in a real cup instead of paper. They intuitively know what a good pull of espresso looks like. They make pretty patterns in my foam. They don't lord their expertise over you, they just want to make you a yummy drink. They have a coffee card, which I mistakenly first thought required 20 drinks before your free one. I live in the neighborhood and am a regular. I've gotten to know each turnover of the staff and I genuinely like everyone I meet there. The coffee consistently great. The neighborhood has also attracted a lot of shoots to the area so from week to week you'll see different crew (not cast) for Mr. Robot or The Good Fight getting big batches of coffee for the set. It makes me feel like I'm a part of something going on, which is a feeling I think everyone wants, occasionally, in NYC. It's one of the best coffee shops I've ever been to. read more

One of the better options in this area. I use to be an avid coffee drinker and have more or less quit, although I have had the coffee here and can vouch for it. The tea selection is nothing special but it works. The area is very big. The crowd enjoys using the wi-fi (a bit too much for my tastes) and the staff is very friendly. I visited Cafe Grumpy not just for their coffee (although it was nice) but as part of my investigation to uncover NYC's coffee shop sustainable practices. I'm rating it here (4/5) in terms of green stars (https://greenstarsproject.org/about/), but strictly based on what I learned from that visit, like how they receive milk in glass jars (which are returned and reused) and their stock of eco-friendly tp (yes, I check bathrooms). The one thing I think they could do better is encourage customers to use for-here cups or bring their own (e.g., offering a discount). What I love about Grumpy is the cozy atmosphere and how I, for some reason, am always very productive working or studying here. There's almost always seats available. The staff is friendly. However, massive cons: The loud and bad music! They used to play some great classic rock songs, but now, there's loud ocean sounds or something?! It is honestly the worst and so annoying. I also think the coffee is overpriced...I can pay extra for great coffee but I really dislike their $3.75 ice coffee. I have to say they have a great soy latte though. I really like grabbing a coffee and sitting down to work here. They have goooood coffee and it's always been a quiet cafe where i can get work done. Today I got tea for $3.50. expensive for tea! But I think, hey I'm here to work for a few hours and it's cheaper than renting an office space for myself. However I'm currently sitting here today wishing the staff weren't so loud. They're laughing, joking, groaning about a mistake or two and talking across the cafe to each other. Generally the volume of the staff is way higher than that of their quiet clientele. I appreciate that they all get along, but there are a lot of people sitting near me rolling their eyes and trying to work (i'm not joking I've locked cringed eyes with more than one person in the span of an hour in regards to the staff, one guy next to me literally huffed and puffed about it, packed up and walked out of here). In the spirit of the name, I know I'm being a bit grumpy, but I've always appreciated how conducive the environment is here to those who want to work and I feel like it's a new lack of awareness on the staff's part and not intentional. hoping a friendly reminder is appreciated. read more

One of my favorite coffee shops in NY. Great atmosphere, always plenty of seating and its never too loud. I spent a month or two sitting in there using their free wifi to find a job last year. They ahve great coffee and tea, and the foam guy makes the most beautiful designs with the foam. He is truly an artisit, the drawback is that its a little longer wait for the brew. Also it isn't a convientient location, not really close to any subways and there isn't much else in the surrounding couple of blocks. Great neighborhood coffee shop though. read more

Excellent, excellent coffee. The Grumpy guys and gals know how to pull a perfect Americano, pour the perfect cappuccino. The music is usually good and the baristas are usually friendly. And, as Liz N says, it's a wonderful place to work. There is a lot of space and quite a few outlets for laptop users. I marvel at what I've managed to accomplish there. While I wish it opened earlier and stayed open later, that's really all that I would change. I just moved out of the neighborhood and it is probably the thing I will miss most about Greenpoint. read more

This place makes absolutely fantastic coffee and the location is excellent for doing work. They've redone the furniture recently, making it an even more pleasant place to sit down with your computer and type away. The front section with the large wall-mounted mirror and windows on two sides has excellent light and many plugs, basically perfect for a graduate student like myself. Also I sort of mistakenly bought the $28 a pound Kenyan coffee they roast to brew at home and I will admit it's probably the best coffee I've ever had, and I take this shit pretty seriously. If I were a wealthy and/or more profligate man I'd keep these beans in steady supply. read more

I was turned off by my first Grumpy experience in Park Slope with bad coffee and shitty service. I decided to try again though and this experience was a total 180. Great service, great location, great interior, and most importantly, an amazing double shot iced latte! Had a strong and unique flavor that was just perfect. read more
