The big Italian bread has a great crust, but the inside is soft like cloud. Perfect for dipping

Cacia's bakery is an ABSOLUTE must when you are in Philly! Very small bakery that sells different breads, bakery items, and sheet pan pizzas. You can see how long the bakery has been around from just looking around inside, especially the oven! Parking can be a problem during the rush, but we have lucked out the couple of times we've gone. The star of the show is the tomato pie. When we walked in we were greeted by a lovely lady and a man that came out from the back working the oven. Told them I was there for the tomato pie and he said wait, I'm pulling a fresh one out. I cannot even start to tell you how flavorful it was! I literally think about it all the time! Dough is absolutely cooked to perfection and the sauce is something I have never tasted before. Absolutely delicious! My biggest regret is not getting the entire pan! 100% recommend!!

Actually it looked drier & cold in person!

Bit inconsistent more & more when I order pizza it's usually dried up... I like my pizza esp Tomato pie w lot sauce & warm if not hot & cheese bit melted if cheese pizza... I realize this is not the typical pizza pie it's a bakery... but the slices I got were cold & dried up if I didn't know better it was like eating the store reheated yesterday pizza.. was ok or below ok ... the whit pizza was dry & hard as a brick damn shame as I remember this pizza in its heyday my mom use to work at school & take hot yummy juicy slices home to us kids a lot!!!

Italian Bakery Tour - Cacia's Bakery I've been baking for the last 3 years, since COVID began, and while I've had some successes, I haven't yet mastered two native Philadelphian baked goods - Hoagie (or "sub" or "grinder") Rolls and Tomato Pie, an Italian-American/Philly take on Sicily's Sfincione Palermitano. So, one day in April 2023, I partnered with my Yelp buddy, Gerald S., to traverse the Greater Philadelphia area, visiting five well-known and respected Italian bakeries, sampling those two things. I wanted to understand the nature of those breads, to understand their common traits - size and weight, density, crumb size; and, in the case of Tomato Pie, the sweet/acid/spice taste of its sauce. Of course, none of the bakeries that I visited would share their recipes, but I hoped to return to San Diego with a good idea of how to fiddle with recipes I have on hand, to make hoagie rolls and tomato pie similar to those I ate in Philly. CACIA'S BAKERY Hoagie Rolls Cacia's hoagie rolls were not for me. I found them bland, and worse, too dense for use as sandwich rolls and too dry for table bread. When I was learning to bake and made bread like Cacia's, I called it a mistake and tried again. [Philly locals: I understand that you can't talk about commercial Italian bread production in the region without mentioning Cacia's. I don't care. That conversation also includes Amoroso and Liscio, and I'm not crazy about their products either. Also, not for nothing, all three companies are either entirely or mostly New Jersey-based, and I'm interested in Philadelphia's Italian bakeries.] The Numbers: Cacia's hoagie rolls were 12" long, 9.5" in circumference and weighed ~140g. A 4" midsection weighed ~60g. I estimate the density of the baked rolls at 0.12745 g/cm3. Tomato Pie This is where Cacia's shines, and they know it. Of the five bakeries we visited, Cacia's original retail operation at Mole and Ritner Streets in South Philly featured tomato pie most prominently, and in the greatest number of variations. Because my "project" focused on the plainest version, that's what I sampled, but the neighbors speak well of the half-dozen alternatives that line Cacia's counter. The crust on Cacia's 6" x 4" slice wasn't as rich and snappy as that of Sarcone's, and, like their bread, it was denser than I'd have preferred. But their sauce was delicious, an onion-forward, herby coating, lightly flecked with what I think was black pepper. It was less pizza sauce, more oven-baked "Sunday gravy." As I sampled, I wondered how I'd replicate that sauce, then realized that I already have something similar in my freezer. Every few weeks, I make a large batch of sauce: a hybrid of Marcella Hazan's tomato sauce (perhaps the most famous such thing on the internet) and, from seriouseats.com, Kenji López-Alt's variation of Hazan's recipe. I top my weekly pizza with my sauce; serve it over pasta; layer it into lasagna; and use it to dress meatball subs. I've added it to minestrone, pot roast and even chili. So when I make Philly-style tomato pie at home, I'll simply cook down some of my sauce, paint it onto dough, cook my pie halfway and then add a touch more sauce, for a tomato bite that's similar to, if a little fresher than, Cacia's. ******************** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Sarcone's Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/3ssh9u3v Conshohocken Italian Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/4ffak98y RECOMMENDED New York Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/bdhtunz8 Cacia's Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/mw9yf6v8 NOT RECOMMENDED Corropolese Italian Bakery & Deli: https://tinyurl.com/26upuxdx .

    "Fresh tomato pie" via ubereats

We ordered pizza from ubereats. The photo of the pies were full, normal, square pizzas. The description was "fresh tomato pie". Not only did we receive old individual slices, they were ice cold with no attempt at being heated up before delivered.

Apparently there are 5 of these bakeries but I would have never guessed as the first one I saw was in a residential area of South Philly. They have delicious pizza and apparently fresh cannolis. The other locations seem to have hoagies but not here. Probably too much competition for hoagies in Philly. Parking is not the easiest but welcome to South Philly. In the pictures is a TooGoodToGo order. Don't buy for yourself if ordering this- share share share!! Wish I noticed the bread rolls and cheese bread to share as well in addition to the pizza. Service was quick. Standard South Philly service vibe and personalities.

This fourth generation Italian bakery at the corner of Mole and Ritner in South Philly was the smallest of the bakery visited with Yelp Bro, Omar S., as part of his deep dive into the secrets of sandwich rolls and tomato pies that has made this part of the city so famous. While he weighed and measured samples on the trunk lid of my car, I watched and tasted a little of everything he chose to evaluate. Impressive effort by Omar. I had by far the easier and more enjoyable job. So, Casia's was purchased by Joe in 1953 to be the neighborhood bread store. Today there are 5 stores, the majority in Jersey, still run by the extended familia. They must be doing something right. Check out Omar's review for the technicals and his observations, but for my tastebuds, their torpedo rolls were very good, if not quite at Sarcone's standards, but a worthy competitor with a large following. The shop front is tiny for customers, but behind the glass is a large working flour dust filled bakery. During our few minutes in the store people were coming in and out to pick up their daily bread and tomato pies. The staff was friendly and informative, seeming to always have a moment to explain things to the inquisitive. These guys had more varieties of tray pizzas than the others. If Tomato Pie wasn't your itch, they provided a half dozen other varieties with meats, veggies and cheese to satisfy your taste addiction. The sweet Italian sausage looked particularly appealing. My limited introduction to the T.P. was very similar to all the others. A slightly divergent tomato pasty sauce and moderately crunchy cool crust. You have to love this local approach to simple sauce on dough. Most folks can't get enough. I am in the minority. I'm okay with it, but much prefer either full blown pizza or the Trenton version of tomato pie, with the mozzarella under the chunky crushed tomatoes. Still, I admire the family traditions displayed, and the 70 year history that has left its deep imprint on the community. As a kid who grew up in a city; who's grandmother walked to the local bakery almost daily for fresh bread and perhaps a sweet cookie or cupcake for her grandkids, I know how important the neighborhood baker was to all of us. Around Ritner & Mole, it still is.

Not only does this place have some of the best pizza and bread in Philly, the folks that work here are wonderful, friendly and helpful. My daughter, wife and I drove down from from Conshohocken to get some "Bird Buns". These are green rolls perfect with hot dogs and green relish and jalapeño peppers for the game on Sunday. Unfortunately when we got there they had none. The baker/owner seeing our disappointment came to the counter told us if we could wait 20 minutes he would bake us up a batch. We got a dozen hot out of the oven rolls which he thoughtfully placed in a pizza box so they would not get soggy. He also gave us bags to freeze them with and instructions on how to defrost them on Sunday. The counter person was also so friendly and helpful carefully packing our pizza slices, all corners thank you. In this day and age there are not many places left that provide this kind of service and quality. Thanks for making our game day party special. Go Eagles.

tl;dr skip the tomato pie and opt for cheesesteak and pizzaz slices at this affordable, family-run bakery This old-school, takeout- and cash-only, South Philly institution has baking pizza squares from its brick oven for over 60 years. Chief among the wide variety of pizzas, strombolis, and baked bread offerings sits the signature tomato pie, a nostalgic eats for many locals. A large red-and-white sign hangs above the small, stucco-finished corner shop. Inside, the square customer space barely has the room for multiple parties. Large, rectangular trays of pizza, stromboli, and cheese bread -- each with a handwritten paper price tag -- sit behind a plexiglass barrier. Further back is the large, industrial kitchen. The room fills with the sound of chatter among customers and staff members. The dreary whitewashed walls are decorated with a mix of sentimental photographs and pragmatic signs and calendars. I've been meaning to try Cacia's pizza for some time now, and this past weekend, I finally had the opportunity. I ordered through Too Good To Go, and I picked up my grab bag just before closing time. Immediately, I was floored by the quantity of food that I received: 18 assorted square slices, a kaiser roll and an Italian roll topped with cheese and tomatoes, and a large Italian loaf. I realized that I didn't receive any tomato pie, but a staff member generously offered to add a complimentary slice of it to my pile. Ready to dine, I biked home cautiously with my hefty loot. A quick reheat in the oven (7 minutes at 500 degrees) brought the slices back to life. As a whole, the focaccia-like crust hosted a nice crisp on the bottom while remaining otherwise pillowy throughout. The toppings were spread close to the edges, leaving only a few bare bites. Of the varieties, I was most disappointed by the tomato pie: it was one-dimensional and drab, begging for a drizzle of olive oil or dollop of ricotta. Conversely, I was notably impressed by cheesesteak and pizzaz slices. The cheesesteak pizza carried an even layer of ribeye and an extra dash of cheese across a white pie base. Meanwhile, the pizzaz (a sauceless pie topped with New Yorker White American, tomato slices, and banana peppers) was a bizarre concoction that surprisingly works, reminding me of an open-faced grilled cheese than a pizza. Finally, the white, red with cheese, and spinach slices were all standard -- coated with an even, moderate layer of toppings and sporting the same pleasant crust. Cacia's slices themselves didn't knock my socks off, but they were well worth the paltry prices -- already affordable at a regular ~$2 per slice, my entire Too Good To Go feast set me back only a meager $5.99. While I likely won't commit to a second, dedicated visit to South Philly just for Cacia's pizza, I would recommend either the cheesesteak or pizzaz slices (even at full price) for a quick bite while in the neighborhood.

I actually celebrated my birthday here last year and this place is always a hit, never a miss! We started with the cucumber and tomato salad and the country bread, and what a delicious combination! We also ordered a side of olive oil, and they seriously have some of the best olive oil I've had in a while. I definitely recommend getting some on the side to dip your country bread in. Trust me! We paired everything with a pitcher of sangria, which gives you about four drinks and was much more economical than ordering individual cocktails. I finally tried the chicken Parmesan, and boy, am I kicking myself for not trying it sooner! The chicken breast was thick, juicy, moist, and perfectly crunchy. Some places make their chicken Parm so thin that it barely feels like you're eating chicken, but this was an actual substantial piece of chicken with the perfect bite. Our waitress told me I could swap out the pasta and sauce that normally come with the chicken Parmesan, so of course I did! I got the rigatoni with vodka sauce, and it was DELIGHTFUL. The portion was massive, so I took leftovers home and yes, I absolutely ate them the very next day! My fiancé got the branzino and wanted something lighter so he could help me with the rigatoni. His plate was beautifully presented, the fish tasted incredibly fresh, and it was exactly what he wanted. Overall, we had another wonderful experience. This restaurant will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we'll definitely be back! A special shoutout to our waitress, who was absolutely delightful and told me I could change the pasta and sauce with my chicken Parmesan. You changed my life! You have no idea how happy you made me. The service was good, but there was a wait both times we strolled by (Sunday and Tuesday), so would recommend making a res. The only caveat is that I would not recommend coming here with a party larger than 4 people, the restaurant is very small and rustic and can't fit a larger party. It was fine for us as we were able to push some outside tables together (and it was a beautiful evening), but I do wish we could have sat inside.

Surprise surprise we actually found parking OK maybe that's because we got there earlier than our reservation in hopes to make another stop that didn't work out so we came early and they greeted us with open arms took us to a beautiful table in front of vintage fireplace hence we were sitting in the perfect spot. Our server, Justin came over to greet us. We got into some conversation before we even touched upon the food. He was exceptional at his run through the menu, his explanations on preparations handling questions. This was definitely not his first, not his second and not his third rodeo he's definitely a professional at what he does. Upon review of the menu we started off with steamed clams and a spicy marinara and actually asked for fra Diavlo hence they gave it an additional hit of spice. It had a nice kick. It was very tasty. My wife was going back-and-forth between their signature lasagna and a little weak weenie with crab Bianco and in the end she went with the baked lasagna oh my goodness the size of that piece on the plate we took half home. She certainly enjoyed her. For me, I went with the veal Catherine, the medallions veal with shrimp, lump crab meat, and fresh tomato and a Bianco sauce the plating presentation I can't describe you'll just have to see my photograph. I've never seen it like this before and it was extremely tasty. Very tender I would certainly get that dish again. And since I am not a pasta eater, I ordered a side vegetable of broccoli Rob. And we ordered a bottle of the Italian Montepuliciano wine, what was the perfect compliment to our dinner? And this was my birthday. My wife was surprising me she had already pre-ordered their homemade tiramisu with ladyfingers, which would wind up taking with us cause we were kind of full and had later that night at one of our favorite coffee houses in Philly and boy that dessert was perfect and I'm glad we waited. Again, everybody was smiles, friendly, and helpful. The place of spotless and you really feel like you're in someone's home. Be sure to see my food photos and don't blame me if you drool on your cell phones

Heavy reputation and history brought us here. Google and Yelp reviews were solid…read more We came on a Friday, and Saturday was their last day of service before their summer vacation break. I think they phoned it in as a result. Our server was disengaged, almost rude. Our dishes; the veal was tasteless, the lasagna was excellent and so was the calamari. Our pasta dish was tasteless and overdone. Our $70 red was beautiful. He never asked if we wanted another, or anything else. They were out of tiramisu. He could have told us. Also, the bill was handwritten, more like chicken scratches, I couldn't read any of what was written. I'm sure their rep is deserved, but as a visitor to Philadelphia, on our night it was not.

What is up with the raving reviews yet only 4 stars?!…read more My goodness, this is one of the best Italian restaurants that I've ever visited! Mind you, I understand they don't have risotto, ossobucco, and some other exvellent Italian staples, but man do they make up for it with abundance, price, and quality, The linguini with prosciutto is one of the best I've had. The fresh bread to start with garlic confit also paired well with our appetizers of prosciutto and carpaccio. Thankfully this was found on accident as it's walking distance from our hotel, so we're reserving our spot for tomorrow and will come prepared with our bottle of wine. This is a BYOB establishment. They do not have any alcohol on the premises but do not charge a cork fee. It's a true family run business, which is my go to back home so I'm so THRILLED to have stumbled on this wonderful establishment. I'd give 10 stars if I could! Don't walk here, RUN!

Vibes: casual, mom-and-pop Italian BYOB; bring a friend or the whole crew…read more Tasting notes: - Calamari: lovely combination of tender shrimp, beans, and rings that was so scoopable with the bread - Burrata: appetizer special for the night; cherry tomatoes were delightfully sweet - Caprese: large wedges of juicy tomato paired with bite-sized mozzarella balls over fresh spinach with a drizzle of balsamic; shareable for a few people - Linguine with clams: very light but clammy broth; abundance of pasta Other thoughts: - Friendly service - Very busy on a Monday evening, can get pretty crowded and loud - Plates are generous, as is the bread service with garlicky olive oil with smashable and smearable whole cloves - Great for gluten-free and vegetarian Impression: What a homey Italian gem!

My favorite restaurant that I went to while visiting Philly. This place feels like being back in…read moreItaly. It is tiny inside with just a bar and a couple tables. That's it. I love this European feel. Up first, I had a $17 El Noe. I was hoping for a strong burnt mezcal taste, but nope. It seems like only Florida gets this drink right. The drink wasn't bad at all, but I was just looking for that burnt taste. I also had a $18 Dirty Pasta Water Martini, basically a dirty martini. It was fine, but it came in a micro grass which was kind of weird. Clearly this isn't a place you come for cocktails. Now, onto the star of the night, the food. Up first, the $16 Spring Salad. Loved it, hit the spot. Also, had the $17 Arancini. I really liked those little balls and especially the dipping sauce. I had the $26 Rigatoni. It was absolutely phenomenal. I could go eat it every day. My mom had the $24 Tonnarelli and it was also top tier excellent. The flavors, the atmosphere, the staff, everything here is top notch. The Internet did not let me down. I'm so glad I decided to book this restaurant. I had a wonderful night.

The rumps seasonal pasta was great and would come back for that!…read more Maybe because I had higher expectations this was a 4 for me! The antipasti we chose the crudo was not my style of sashimi pairing. They added a fish with something even more oily/heavy so it just made everything heavy and not light and fresh which I prefer. The rigatoni honestly was way too salty for my taste. With the focaccia that's mid...it was less salty. The rumps seasonal pasta was delicious and fresh tasting! The service however is amazing and the server gave the great rec of the seasonal rumps pasta!
