Excellent pizza. Outside crust is amazing and light.

I will put their pizza up with any of the other top places in Philly. And, I have been to them too. Dough is just fabulous as is their sauce. Just an excellent pizza. Seating is just a few tables outside but most folks were to go orders. Services was good. Highly recommended.

I've heard quite a bit of hysteria regarding the quality of the slices so I decided to take Pizza Shackamaxon for a spin. My experience surpassed all my expectations. ENVIRONMENT It's key to keep in mind this is a pizza STAND as opposed to a sit-in pizza restaurant. I quickly came to realize this as I ordered during one of our colder winter days. The service was quick, effficient and left nothing to be desired. However, smells coming out the service window....lead me to my next point! FOOD The aroma! Before I could take a bite of my slice the aroma of their herbs hit my nose at the service window. The slices are large, not the extent of your average NY slice but most certainly in comparison to the average slice you'll encounter in Philly. Overall, I was more than pleased with my experience at PIZZA Shackamaxon. I can proclaim them to be my favorite thin-crust pizza spot in the city. Happy eats!

One slice of pepperoni and one can of Diet Coke was $8.64. The pizza has a crispy bottom and perfect amount of toppings. The pizza isn't super saucy and not overloaded with cheese. It has a great dough to topping ratio. Very good slice of pizza with no complaints.

FOOD We had their plain and pepperoni slices, both of which were delicious. The crust was thin and crispy, the sauce rich and flavorful (though I wish there was a little more), the cheese soft and chewy, and the basil/Italian seasoning the cherry on top. For $5.50/6.00 a slice, it's on the pricier side, but definitely a great place to check out at least once. SERVICE You order at the window and receive your order when they call your name. Both cash and card are accepted. AMBIANCE There are a couple tables for two and a bench available outside the store, but we ended up standing near the shop to eat. PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity.

Meh. Maybe it was an off day but the slices here just did not hit. This was stop 1 of a Pizza crawl and they just missed the mark. The ingredients just were not great and the pizza just tasted old. They have a few tables to sit on but they are dirty and in direct sunlight which is not ideal for summer. I would skip this spot unless it's the only place open on your way home and you are craving a slice.

For Philly, this is a fantastic slice of pizza. Thin crust, nice amount of pepperoni & not too saucy. We got a pie to save some for the next day but it was so good we couldn't stop eating it fresh. The wait for a full pie is around 20 minutes and since it's in a great area you can walk around until it's done. Highly recommend.

I've been coming here for the last 3 years and it's definitely my top pizza spot in Philly. You can never go wrong with the special, I have enjoyed every slice I've had. Love the tomato pie and pepperoni too (esp with hot honey). I will say their service can be a bit prompt and cold at times but not enough to ever stop me from coming lol. Limited outdoor seating and parking can be a pain. Prices have gone up over the last year to $6-7ish a slice but they are pretty big!!

tl;dr don't let the dedication to slices and takeout deter you; the premium pizza at this streamlined Fishtown hole-in-the-wall is anything but forgettable Pizza Shackamaxon (named after its tiny Fishtown sidestreet) debuted in 2018 as a slice-centric popup simply known as "Pizza". The venture established its brick-and-mortar operation within a little corner shop on Girard, taking over the space previously occupied by Philadelphia pizza royalty Pizzeria Beddia. Despite the large shoes to fill, the folks at Shackamaxon have since been recognized locally and nationally as premium pie-slingers. Hip hop and fragrant aromas pour out the front door, distinctly recognizable even several rowhomes down. Indoors, pizza-themed artwork, drawn directly onto the whitewashed walls, starkly contrasts the industrial pizza-firing equipment. The front door and inside are off-limits except for staff -- make your way to the side window and ring the makeshift doorbell to order. A vibrant mural of Philly chef Christina Martinez pops against the brick wall adjacent to the ordering window. The trim menu, colorfully etched onto a chalkboard on the other side of the window, always includes cheese, pepperoni, and tomato slices; a rotating weekly special is chalked onto a modified pizza peel. A handful of mismatched picnic tables are arranged around the shop. My partner and I swung by Shackamaxon for a low-key, post-happy hour dinner. Multiple other parties were awaiting their 'zza or chowing down on slices, but we were able to order immediately. We opted for 2 Pepperoni slices and the Special: Upside Down Provolone with Confit Rosemary. We posted up at the only unoccupied table, and, within a few minutes, a staff member handed up a hefty box. The pizza was surprisingly large, spanning a radius consistent with NYC slices; further, one slice even looked to be a quarter-pie (rather than the more-standard sixth or eighth). The crust achieved the appropriate balance between thinness and sturdiness, withstanding blistering cheese and an indulgent layer of oil. Parmesan was grated generously across the surface, including atop the slight cornicione. The pepperoni slices were crisped into grease-laden cups, and the rosemary popped beside fully realizable flavors of tangy red sauce. While decidedly enjoyable, I wish that the food was moderately more affordable. At $5-6 per slice, the prices resonate more with NYC than Philly. Nonetheless, for a completely casual affair, Shackamaxon is a fantastic pizza option within an otherwise whole pie-centric neighborhood.

Ask the Community - Pizza Shackamaxon

Hi, i'm making a trip to Philadelphia this weekend with the wife and toddler. Pizza is my priority on this trip (aside from the Rocky steps ;)). Is there a particular time that's best to get there i.e. when there won't be much of a queue?

Outside off hours you'll be fine. If you go after 1 but before 4, you'll will be fine. And even if there is a line, it moves quickly. It's mainly overflow from the super small inside.

Is Shackamaxon take out only?

We have standing tables and plenty of outdoor seating providing there's no rain.

I had the Mootz pizza, it was so immaculate that I had a dream about it today... a whopping 449 days after I had that pizza. I searched through a dozen pizza shops on Yelp and looked through pics of their interiors before I was able to figure out that it was Paulie Gee's that I ate at so I could write this review. I'm not a cheese pizza guy, but I can appreciate a really good one. If you enjoy a quality cheese pull (IYKYK) and garlicky goodness then get the Mootz... in fact get 2 bc that one slice is going to be gone way too fast. If I'm EVER in Philly again I'm bee-lining (or is it v-lining?) straight to Paulie Gee's to get 2 slices of the Mootz.

While I might choose another place for takeout, when the goal is a night of pizza, wine, great atmosphere, and authentic neighborhood vibes, this is usually where we end up. The space is bright, industrial, airy, and thoughtfully designed but unforced. White walls, warm wood, considered lighting, and a floor plan with real breathing room. The vibe recalls Bucktown, Wicker Park, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint: design-forward but genuinely local. There's a great bar, and booths near the kitchen with glass windows that let you watch the staff. Our three-year-old was mesmerized, and the staff was warm and playful, smiling and waving while they cooked. A small detail, but memorable. The crowd feels local. Good music, friendly people, hip but never pretentious. It's just a fun place to be with great service, too. The food is outstanding. We usually order the chicories caesar with grana padano and breadcrumbs, and the lettuce salad with shaved vegetables and creamy oregano dressing. For pizza, we love the arrabbiata (the Angry pie) and tomato pie with sausage and pickled chilies. My wife enjoys the ice cream. A note on bringing kids: I don't think this is a family restaurant, but if your kids are curious and well-behaved, it's absolutely worth bringing them earlier in the evening. We've gone around 4:30 or 5:00 on weekends and always felt comfortable. One time, our daughter had a full meltdown, and we were mortified, but the staff couldn't have been cooler. They packed everything to go, kindly and without any judgment. That kind of grace is hard to fake, and it genuinely stuck with us. Pricing is fair for the quality of the food and the experience. Places like this can seem overrated or overpriced, but this one doesn't. It offers real value for a memorable night out. The whole restaurant feels like a microcosm of Philadelphia's progressive, creative side. There's real ambition behind it, but it still feels human and grounded, nothing sterile, nothing corporate, nothing over-engineered. Just smart people building a cool neighborhood place that others actually want to spend time in. Oh, and make a reservation. Great spot, Joe. We'll be back soon. Thank you!

The hostess took our coats (a nice touch!) and then a rotation of two servers explained the specials and we ordered. I love that the menu is on the shorter side and they rotate the pizza offerings, so even if you're visiting on a regular basis, you'll always be able to try something new. Additionally, when a menu is only about 2 pages, you know everything on those two pages is top notch, as was the case at Pizzeria Beddia. This evening we got the meatballs (didn't take a photo, was too excited, but they were HUGE and excellent) and the beef, pork and veal balls with a rich red sauce was outstanding. Came in an order of 2 but one was plenty for each of us. The Pizza we got had potatoes on it, and we added sausage per the servers recommendation, and it was cooked perfectly and all of the flavors blended so well together. We are so lucky to have an amazing (and nationally recognized!) pizza spot in the neighborhood and it's always nice when you can walk in without a reservation from time to time.

I'm a native NYer who loves his pizza and living in SF, really good, NY style pizza is hard to come by. EXCELLENT LATE-NIGHT STOP! MUST TRY!…read more We walked in about an hour before closing on a Thursday night--never an ideal entrance. You know the look. The polite smile that says "it's fine" while the eyes say "it is absolutely not." Totally understandable. No one loves a near-close order. I even acknowledged it out loud--apologized, explained we weren't from the area, and that we were just trying to grab a quick bite because it was one of the few places still open. She said it was okay. Her face said otherwise. Fair enough. Here's where it turned around. The pizza came out hot, fresh, and legitimately impressive. Not "good for late night" good--just plain good. Every bite was fresh, the ingredients tasted clean, and the pizza clearly hadn't been rushed or phoned in despite the timing. Hunger probably helped, but even factoring that out, this was a standout. Honestly, I was kicking myself for not ordering an extra one to go before leaving the city. That's how good it was. We did try to get drinks, but were told the soda machine was down. The nozzles were off, so I'm guessing it was a cleaning/end-of-night thing. I won't ding them for it--though let's be real, tossing nozzles in sanitizer isn't exactly a marathon. Still, not a deal-breaker. Restaurant was clean, but of course, they were near closing. I tipped her a few bucks for staying late, and left genuinely satisfied. Bottom line: the food carried this experience completely. If you're visiting Philadelphia and need a reliable, fresh, late-night bite, &Pizza is absolutely worth the stop. Sometimes the places you expect the least end up delivering the most. I plan to 100000% return (and it'll probably be near closing time again, too)

I was immediately seated upon arriving to Pizzeria Vetri. I was asked if I wanted to sit at the bar, at a table, or at the pizza counter. I chose the pizza counter so that I could watch staff making pizzas. As I was there on my own, the serving staff continued to stop by and check on me.
