cute restaurant in center city with the iconic spicy chicken caesar! all i can say is: spicy chicken caesar. it lives up to the hype, and it is delicious. i've eaten here several times now and none of the other food is particularly memorable, but the spicy chicken caesar is fantastic albeit a little expensive. i really need my boyfriend to learn how to make the spicy chicken caesar so i stop coming back, but it makes for a fantastic girl dinner. most of the times i've come here were either for restaurant week or the spicy chicken caesar. i really don't think it's worth coming for restaurant week, it's kind of a bummer that your whole table has to order the same thing and that you share a lot of the dishes. it ends up being not a whole lot of food, and i did the math and the cost comes out to be about the same. overall, it's a decent restaurant with good service. it's located right in center city with a million other restaurants so it's easily overlooked, but when i think of prunella i think of spicy chicken caesar. read more

The ambiance was prunella was cute and cozy. I opted for the spicy Caesar salad with shrimp, and two pizza : white claw and queen bee. The Queen bee was by far my favorite, with the delightful hint of sweetness from the hot honey. White claw felt a bit plain for me and I probably would go for something else. The pizza was of great value. The service was questionable. I made a reservation and as I got there, the hostess didn't have a table - suspected that it was given away. So we sat at the bar for 20/30 min until we can be properly seated. They also forgot our order so we had to wait even longer as we reorder our food. We had a fun dinner before the show Shucked at Forrest theater. Our table in the bar area was awkward as one seat was in the way of all who walked past. My drink wasn't my favorite. Great Italian food with on this double date. Our waiter Devon made us feel comfortable by walking us through the menu and the place. We order so much food and all the food that was eaten by us was well prepared and high quality. The octopus was no chewy, the gnocchi was like chewing on a cloud, and the dough for the pizza has the nice black spots on the bottom and a nice chew. As my first review for the year, I was excited to try a new restaurant especially a place from the Schulson group, but it was just okay. The ambiance was nice with dimly lit interior, a romantic vibe at the bar and multiple outdoor seats with heat lamps. The service was timely and the service was attentive. As far as food goes, we started with the arancini appetizer and the short ribs. The arancini were not crispy enough with a crunch like I was looking for and they were a bit over peppered for my taste buds. The short ribs were perfectly cooked . For an entree, we went with the white claw which was fine, but nothing exciting and the crust was a bit too thin for what I was looking for. My friends wanted to meet up for dinner and suggested prunella. I will say I saw prunella online going viral for their spicy Caesar. My review on it is that it's a Caesar salad, not bad but not anything crazy. The whipped ricotta was our second appetizer that we ordered. It was very yummy with a good balance of sweet with the honey. I just prefer my ricotta on the side to dip the bread but it was overall very good. I also ended up ordering the rocket and rolled pizza. It was ok but I do find the choice to not have cheese very interesting. There also was more arugula more than anything so I was underwhelmed but I quite like the crust on the pizza. The service was quick and attentive. Jared was our server and he was very kind and made sure to make us aware of anything that he found necessary. Lastly the ambiance of the restaurant was good but I didn't love how small the inside was. The tables were too small for a group of four in my opinion and most of the food was crammed in addition to the drinks. Wood fired pizza makes all the difference plus the drizzle of pesto on top! The cacio e pepe was flavorful and you could tell the pasta was fresh! Topped it off with a healthy scoop of gelato. For drinks we ordered Birds & Bees which was great and a basic Pinot Grigio. Both came almost immediately. For food we ordered the following: Meatballs: 9/10. Really strong flavors. Loved them! Spicy Caesar: 6/10. Everyone loves it but I thought it was just a normal ceasar salad with a slight kick. It didn't blow me away. Ricotta honey: 10/10. Delicious! Tried this place during restaurant week and I was GAGGED. It's a small and cozy venue. Bathrooms are clean. Service was friendly and helpful. We started with two plates, the whipped ricotta (the toast was too hard) and the spicy ceasar salad (10/10 deliciousness). Solid pizza and pasta. I stumbled in here for a very late dinner with a friend, and it was just what we needed. The space is small and filled up quickly after we arrived (at around 9:30pm) but the servers were still very attentive despite there only being 2 of them. We opted not to do family style, although that's probably how it was intended to be. My friend had the margherita pizza and I had the agnolotti. We also shared their bread, which is a non traditional dough ball situation, and honestly was my favorite thing. The agnolotti was delicious, but the portion was very small, especially compared to the pizza size. I'm talking like 10 little pasta pouches. If you want a pasta and aren't sharing family style, definitely order bread and an appetizer to supplement, because this was about the same size as an app. I would come back to prunella if I'm looking for a last minute spot in the area or want a good quality late-night bite, but probably wouldn't make a special trip for it. Prunella offers an upper casual style setting at very normal prices. I appreciate that very much. I can't recall any other place quite like that, tbh. When you walk in, without looking at the menu, you assume you're going to spend $50/person. Nope. They just have a very nice & chic restaurant. Settled on a pizza with pepperoni & pickled hot peppers. The pizza wasn't great. It was very oily and floppy, which was a bit surprising given that it was made in a wonderful looking pizza oven. Service was fine! No real complaints there. Ultimately, the thin menu + greasy, floppy pizza prevents Prunella from getting more than 3*, but I'm glad that I tried it! Came in here for dinner after a long day. What a cute place! I ordered the splitting pears cocktail which was light, refreshing, and delicious. It reminded me of a Shirley Temple which I used to order when my grandparents would take me to the "top of the Ponch" in Detroit when I was little. It wasn't the same flavor profile, more the fun bive of the drink. I decided on the spaghetti cacio e pepe which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was rich, creamy, nicely seasoned. I opted to not order an appetizer because I wanted dessert so I needed to save room. Absolutely made the right decision there! I got the zeppole which came with both a chocolate caramel and strawberry balsamic sauce. The zeppole were light, airy, melt in the mouth good. The sauces were good too, but honestly they were gilding an already delicious lily. Service was a bit hit or miss, but not like rude or anything. I think they were just busy. Prunella serves small plates/tapas of mainly American & Italian-inspired cuisines. I highly recommend the Happy Hour! -- I dined at Prunella on a Tuesday for the Happy Hour. The Happy Hour typically runs from 4-6 PM, bar-only seating, and no reservations. I arrived at 4:30 PM and it was fairly crowded at the bar and we were allowed to be seated outdoors. I was happy with the outdoor seating's temperature (heated) but I was a little uncomfortable because I saw the plates/cups were left outside for all the tables before being seated. I was concerned about the cleanliness of the plates, cups, and cutlery. Also in typical Philly fashion, we had an individual come up to us as we were dining outdoors. It wasn't ideal but it is truly something I don't think is the fault of the restaurant, just something to be mindful of with outdoor dining. The service was truly excellent considering we were seated outside and we were never waiting for anyone to fill our waters, bring food/drinks, or bring the check. They were friendly, quick, and efficient. Extremely happy with our service experience! My group of 4 ordered the following items from the Happy Hour menu: 1) Daily pizza special, 2) Plain Jane pizza, and 3) Whipped ricotta snack. I left feeling mostly full but not stuffed. I found the pizzas' crusts to be thin and crispy, the sauce ratio to be ideal (very saucy!), and toppings/flavor quite complex and tasty. I didn't quite catch the name of the special pizza, but it was a mix of Italian cured meats, arugula, lemon, and ricotta with a white sauce. This was my favorite! The Plain Jane was nothing crazy but it was still a fairly good pizza, nonetheless. Lastly, I was a bit surprised by the ricotta snack, but only little complaints since the bread it came on was actually so delicious. I wished it was a larger size for the price, but I would still recommend a taste with the Happy Hour pricing. Lastly, I ordered the Birds and Bees drink and I was very happy with the drink. It was strong but there was no overwhelming alcohol taste and the drink leaned more towards mocktail taste than alcohol taste. I would order it again for sure. My friends and I have made a tradition of visiting Prunella every January for restaurant week - you truly cannot beat the amount of delicious food you get! I recommend a party of 3-4 to really maximize your experience. However, this year, we just weren't as hungry, so we did some girl math and decided it would be cheaper to do ala cart. We ordered two of the famous spicy caesar salads (must order!!), a ricotta toast, a White Claw pizza, and a finished off our meal sharing two chocolate budinos. The White Claw is a pretty classic white pizza, mozzarella and swirls of basil pesto; the crust is amazing! It pairs perfectly with the salad. The ricotta toast is decadent and addicting, but a little bit goes a long way. The chocolate budino was outstanding - sweet, with hints of espresso. We won't talk about how I ended up with some of it on my white turtleneck... Service was friendly and QUICK! We ordered, and I swear we had our first dishes in less than 10 minutes. The server was a doll, though I can't recall his name. Downside of Prunella, like anywhere in Center City, is there is no parking. Upside, is you're just a short walk from the 13th St. Septa Station, and you're literally equidistant from Broad and Market streets. Pro-tip: Killer happy hour specials, but only at the bar. Good selection of beverages, if you're into that type of thing. Come hungry, leave happy, and maybe don't wear white. read more

I wanted to give a higher rating for Prunella because the food was genuinely delicious, but unfortunately, the service and pacing of the meal left a lot to be desired. My party of four visited on a busy Sunday evening, and while we were seated quickly, the experience went downhill from there. Our server, Brendan M., was friendly and quick to give us menus and waters. When he came back to take our order he had explained that Prunella is a tapas, sharing type of place. We ordered several dishes--the meatballs, squash & burrata, shortrib & polenta, and two pizzas (the big nick and cheesy parisi). While we expected the small plates to come out first and the pizzas to follow, the timing was completely off. The meatballs came out first, followed by the shortrib & polenta about 10 minutes later. Both were very good. The squash & burrata came out 20 minutes after that. While tasty, it was only enough for 2 people to share. One of the pizzas, the big nick, followed a few minutes later. It was an exceptionally well-made Neapolitan style pizza topped with mushrooms, burrata, and a savory porcini crema. We enjoyed our food but were still waiting for the cheesy parisi pizza. When we asked Brendan about it, he explained there had been a miscommunication with the kitchen but assured us it was being made. Another 10-15 minutes passed. When we followed up again, the host came over, apologized, and promised it would arrive shortly. Despite this, another 10-15 minutes passed, and the pizza still didn't arrive. I had mentioned when we were seated that we needed to catch a train at nearby Jefferson Station, but budgeted two hours for the meal. Running out of time, I asked for a box for the remaining half of the big nick pizza and for the cheesy parisi to be packed to go. Instead of a pizza box (which I saw other patrons leaving with), the leftover big nick pizza was folded over and messily stuffed into a plastic container. We asked again about the cheesy parisi and were told it still hadn't been started due to yet another kitchen miscommunication. With no time left to wait, we had to leave without the pizza. While the host comped the cheesy parisi, no further accommodations were offered for the delays. Though Brendan was friendly, I wish he had been more attentive and better coordinated with the kitchen. The food at Prunella is undoubtedly excellent, but the chaotic service and inconsistent pacing overshadowed the meal. I would consider giving it another try in the future but would hope for a much smoother experience next time. read more
