When I'm craving a bigass burrito my go-to place has always been Freebirds. Despite there being a Chipotle and Qdoba within walking distance, it was always far more worthwhile to drive the 15 minutes to eat a better burrito. Now it looks like I'll be driving a bit further whenever that craving hits.
I had heard this place was great but rarely find myself in south Austin. Thankfully an otherwise mundane afternoon of running errands led me to that area so I decided to give it a shot.
The menu is nice and simple. You can get a burrito, tacos, bowl, or salad. There are four tortilla choices (buttermilk flour, ancho chili, cilantro tomatillo, or smokey cheddar), six fillings (beef fajita, chicken fajita, shredded pork, fried tilapia, brisket, and veggies), and three types of rice (white, cilantro-lime white, and brown jasmine rice). There are a ton of sauces that I'm not going to bother listing, just check out the menu. The place works just like any other burrito place so you can have yours custom built or just order one of the 10 'Bob's Specials' off the menu.
They make and press their tortillas on the spot when you order and they are HUGE. I'm talking the size of a medium pizza, maybe a little bigger. After it's cooked for a minute or two on the griddle it goes down the assembly line where you tell your server what you want on it.
I got a pulled pork burrito with pinto beans, cilantro-lime rice, cheese, onions, lime juice and red sauce on the ancho chili tortilla and my girlfriend got a fried tilapia burrito with black beans, cilantro-lime rice, mango pico, cabbage, cheese, onion, cilantro, and chipotle crema on a cilantro tomatillo tortilla.
They were both absolutely fantastic. The proportions of the ingredients were spot on, which is an issue that often breaks what should otherwise be a good burrito. Every bite had a good balance of all the ingredients. The pulled pork was juicy and flavorful and the tilapia was.. well there's only so much you can really do with tilapia -- it was a perfectly fine fried flavorless fish, no complaints.
They've got a bunch of squeeze bottles of a couple of their hot sauces along with a tub of fresh sliced limes next to the soda fountain. The xxhotxxsomething sauce I used had a nice smokey habanero flavor with a good amount of heat. I didn't try out the other types so I can't comment on that.
I really have to applaud their soda fountain. Everything is cane sugar rather than HFCS and they carry some flavors you do not see at other restaurants. I generally don't drink soda very often as it makes me feel a bit queasy but today I kept going back to the fountain for quarter-cup refills of a variety of flavors (copied from their site: Doppelgänger Soda, Root Beer, Lemonade, Vintage Cola, XXX Root Beer, Big Red, Cherry Limeade, Squeeze Orange Soda)
My favorite were definitely the XXX Root Beer and the Doppelgänger Soda, which is just a renaming of Dublin Dr Pepper. If you're a true Texan and therefore a Dublin fanatic, they've got it in fountain form, no need to risk your life going to Waco to get it.
Decor/ambiance is your standard generic semi-fast food restaurant, but honestly I don't expect anything other than that for this type of restaurant. It's comfortable enough, plenty of seating, the music isn't obnoxious, and they've got a few big screen TVs on the wall which is always nice.
I really cannot think of any negatives at all about this place. The prices are great -- a bit cheaper than Freebirds and Chipotle, especially considering the volume and quality of food (if you're like me you definitely get two meals out of one burrito), the staff was friendly, food tasty, store clean, and some TVs so you can turn your brain off for a bit and just enjoy a solid burrito.
The only suggestions I have are that they offer Mexican rice as an option and that they use the fairly spacious sidewalk around the store as an outdoor patio. It's brutally hot right now but during fall and spring it would be nice to be able to eat outside, even if you're still just in a giant parking lot next to a Wal-Mart. Also, build another one closer to me! read more
