Are you looking for that hat for that music festival, party people ? How about the Summer wine tasting hat? A hat for that gala you are attending ? The month of May seems like the start of that hat season . The Kentucky Derby in the month of May had people at Churchhill Downs wearing hats with exaggerated brims which resemble the rings of the planet Saturn. Then there was the Met Gala with some hats that are something else. There is also the Sunday on Mothers Day stroll hat . In June this year there is the hats to wear at the World Cup and on July 4th the 250th year birthday of America hat. There is a place where you can get hats which are cinematic which can give you the Indiana Jones look or the cast of the Broadway musical play Newsies look. If you wear a lot of hats you can find these hats located on Sutter street in the Financial District and it's called Cable Car Clothiers. On a May stroll down the streets of the Financial District there is a San Francisco legacy business which has been around for 80 years. Inside you will find a barber shop along with ties and scarfs of all deigns to match your suit and outfit even the color hue of blue such as Cerulean. Inside they have anything from Oxford dress shirts to plaid Pendletons ( not the flea market kind). Although I am not a fan of the Dallas Cowboys they do have Cowboy and Cowgirls Stenson hats. You can even find a 1800's Forty Niners style hat .Now you can get a Michael Jackson type fedora to help you dance better or go for the Sherlock Holmes British detective look or wear that straw hat for Carnival in San Francisco at the end of May. Hats off to Cable Car Clothiers in SF. You can find a hat for any "occasion" wear a hat to cover you from the sun on your next "vacation" wear a hat for that party theme "celebration "and grab a patriotic hat for the 250 Year birthday for the USA as a "nation" Come to a place where you find a stylish shirt, ties, and an "umbrella "and when it comes to hats they have "hella" you can even get a hat to get cheesy like "mozzarella"and also find that new hats for the different stages at music festivals like "Coachella" read more

Worst shopping experience of my life! Not exaggerating! I usually don't care about customer service or writing reviews; but the older salesman in the sunglasses & blue hat treated me & my partner like garbage! We were causally dressed & walked in to do some window shopping, & maybe buy/try on some hats. The minute we walked in, he followed us around the store as if we were going to steal something. My partner picked up a decoration to admire it and the guy came over and nearly yelled "That's not for sale!" This guy was extremely rude! There were 4 other people ahead of us & he treated them all with respect. We patiently waited for him to finish with the other customers before we talked to him. Whenever we asked him a question, he was curt and abrasive; he clearly didn't want us in his store. I wanted to know my hat size & asked for help; he lied and said he didn't have any of "that measuring stuff." On the counter next to us were 3 measuring tapes and a hat size chart. I guess we were supposed to measure ourselves. My partner asked to try on a hat & he handed it to me instead, like he couldn't tell us apart. He practically shouted at me, "Well don't you want to try it on?!" Maybe he's homophobic, that's the vide I was getting; or maybe he doesn't like lookie-loos. Unless he knows you're gonna buy something expensive, he'll treat you like trash. It's a shame, because I WAS going to come back later & buy a couple hats. Maybe build a new wardrobe... Can't speak for the barber shop part, but this place is is awful! Stay away! read more

Disgusting service and over inflated prices. If you want to be treated like garbage by a rude old man and a slimy salesman for items, 2/3 times over the marked price, pay them a visit. Good spot for masochists who love to be fooled to pay crazy prices. Don't be misguided by the nice, classy location, the people working there are not nice or classy at all. I have been there twice and I would rather get clothing from Old Navy, TJ Max, or Target than those two goblins inside there. read more

I wanted to support a local business, by shopping here, but this place is a ripoff and the salesman had no idea what he was talking about. He kept recommending poor pattern choices and didn't listen to what I was saying. He kept suggesting patterns and colors that didn't match. Ended up buying a pair of no show socks and some shirt stays... turns out it was $90 for the two items. I checked the prices when I got home and the prices were scratched off the items. Whatever this place may have been in the past, it is absolutely not the same today. Stay away from this dump. It's overpriced and the staff is clueless. Shame on me for trying to support a local small business - sometimes they deserve to go out of business for this type of sketchy behavior and poor service. read more

Absolutely appalling experience. The owner is blatantly sexist and treats female customers with open hostility. While he went out of his way to assist the men in the store, he completely ignored me and then had the audacity to sneer, "This is a Men's store," as if I didn't belong. His attitude was not just unfriendly, but downright rude and demeaning. I have never encountered such unprofessional and discriminatory behavior from a business owner. Went into to buy a Barbour jacket. I specifically asked for a 42 and 44. Store employee was distracted, very pushy with his recommendations, and rude. I've never had one or tried one on before so I didn't know that the size is hidden in the front right pocket in newer Barbour jackets. I was given a 40 but was told it was a 42. I hadn't worn it and didn't notice until I wanted to get my dad one for his birthday because I liked the quality. When I noticed later and called, the worker seemed annoyed and again rude when he saw that they didn't have a 42 to exchange. He told me to give the 40 to my dad and get a 42 for my self and they would come next week. When I asked when next week he told me "just come in man" smh like y'all have easy parking just to check in. He ended up saying, "do whatever you want" and hung up. I called back and told him I will not be doing business with them anymore. I considered taking back the jacket I purchased from them but I'm not going to waste another second of time working with them. You are a clothing retailer, treat people who give you buisness better. I have experience working in high end retail management and this employee needs to get some people skills training. I was just trying to buy a jacket from you all and get another one for my dad. Two stars instead of one because they do have superb stuff that's hard to find elsewhere. However, the customer service is abysmal. I stop in there every single time I'm in San Francisco and have never bought a single thing despite their terrific selection of items. It's as if the salesmen don't like to make a sale. Or perhaps I don't "look like" the type of clientele they like to serve. The salesmen just seem uninterested. Great place to pick up gifts for the men in your life who have a bit of an old soul, are anglophiles (circa WW2/Churchill), golfers, or Ska boys. It's a cozy store full of plaid, classic looks, pocket squares, handkerchiefs, boxers, ties, bow ties, socks, hats-- know their size. I mean, it's a clothier so there's that. There is likely more (belts? suspenders/braces), but I was going ISO boxers. I called in advance ensuring they had them, yes, they carry them. 10 minutes flat: From the time I entered to the time I left with boxed up boxers. I strolled in, and right away connected with one of the shop-keeps and told him what I was looking for. Like a pro, he sensed this was a Valentine's Day Gift, and he guided me to the area and right size; he made it easy, selected a few. Tah-dah! Done. I've been looking for a barber for a long time. If you've ever tried to get your haircut in San Francisco, one soon realizes how difficult this simple task may actually be. I found Nicky's the Barber's location inside Cable Car Clothiers by accident during an afternoon stroll at lunch time. The business, or rather the barber shop, is attached behind the counter in what looks like a place from 1920's Americana. It's cool because it's not trying to compete with all the other "barbershop salons" who are trying to be modern and appeal to men and women alike. The day of my visit Nicky the Barber was not available. However Luis the Barber, an apprentice to Nicky, decided to take me on and trim my beard. Luis recommended a haircut which in retrospect was long overdue. Before and during my cut Luis made suggestions regarding the stylization and maintenance of my hair. I could tell based on his questions that he really knew his shit and this made me feel comfortable. Afterwards, I was very pleased with the result and so was my girlfriend! The next day I brought my buddy over to CCC to get a haircut from Luis and he too was pleased with the result. A week has gone by and I started to notice that even as my hair is growing out, the "shape" is still there. This is a great sign. Overall this is a good location that focuses on doing hair and Luis was is a pretty damn good barber. I'm looking forward to my next appointment with Luis. read more

Solely have experience with the barbershop here, so that's what I'm reviewing. I've been seeing Steve for my cuts and trims for 2+ years now. When he moved on from the previous shop we met at, I followed because he's a great barber. Steve currently only cuts on Tuesdays and Fridays, so stop in and make an appointment. You'll be happy you did! read more

I just had a terrible experience with the older gray haired and bespectacled sales clerk who was wearing a hat. Quite simply, he's extremely sensitive and overly dramatic. I was walking by the store and stopped in to look at hats. I noticed they had a barbershop and asked about it. He said they had availability and so I wanted to double check reviews before getting in the seat. He was SO upset by this that he proceeded to scream at me about how rude it was to look at reviews. I apologized for offending him (pretty tiny thing to get so offended about?) but look, I'm not going to get a haircut without seeing what other people's experiences were. I won't be back here for any reason. This guy needs to fix his attitude. The review below about someone screaming at a customer fits my experience here. Will be taking my business elsewhere and recommend you do the same. read more

I sincerely appreciated the help the staff at Cable Car gave to me in my quest for a new winter coat. I give the staff four stars for their efforts but sadly what they had to offer just did not meet my needs. They did not have the coat I had hoped for in stock and then suggested they could have one made for me. I was initially open to this suggestion but then the deal went south. I was quoted about $2,000 for a coat but then I found the style of the coat was too short for me. Next they said they might get it made to my length but it would be another $500 or more. Next they pointed out the factory would be closed for the coming holidays so in addition to having to pay and additional $500 over $2,000 for the coat I would have to wait until January at the earliest to get it. All things considered it seemed too much of a stretch for what I wanted and to have to wait too long. In the end I found a tailor on line which will make you anything you want fast for about $1,000 and so went with him. Frankly, I had hoped for more from cable car but I sincerely appreciate their efforts and will keep them in mind for a suit in the coming year... read more

My family of 3 men -casually dressed (jeans, sweater, jacket, t-shoes) for a day of walking around in SF- and myself were treated quite rudely. Maybe we didn't look like the usual type who patronize Cable Car Clothiers. Initially, we were chastised for ringing the entry bell more than once (nobody acknowledged us after the first ring and we couldn't hear the bell from the street) and then ignored once entering, with only one other customer in the store at the time. Nobody welcomed us or said they'd be with us soon:100% ignored in a very small shop. No customer service provided for my group. We got a bad vibe and left. Staff should not judge a book by it's cover. My money is as green as anyone else's. read more

I came into this store to purchase a 2k dollar Hickey Freeman coat and a few other items to help prepare me for my east coast trip for work going into the winter season through a recommendation from a store next door. I was sold a coat by Ed who I might add was amazing. Though the coat wasn't a fit, the material looked like it might work. So, together we strategized that I would return in a few weeks to discuss how we could tailor the coat and begin building out a wardrobe since I would be in the east coast more often. Ed took the time to get to know me and my needs. He was kind enough to help work with me and assist in finding a solution to my problem going into the new year. Throughout this experience Ed had a coworker named Jonathan of whom I later today realized was one of the owners. He consistently attempted to interject himself into the experience. To a point where it felt the same way that an actor does when they "get caught acting" the facad was disingenuine and it felt incredibly fake like a used car salesman. I understood that the man meant well, but it just came off as an overacted attempt to make a connection to someone who was spending lots of money because they were a potential sale for them in the future. At the time I had not put too much thought into it as Ed was so amazing so it basically canceled out the experience at the end of the day. Upon finishing my two week trip, I realized that I had to get a new suit that had a different color scheme. Since the material for this coat was not conducive to both suits I had to change it or return it. I was still excited to start building out my wardrobe, so I drove an hour into the city to see if Ed would be there to discuss getting some custom shirts made, build out a plan for my wardrobe, and to potentially exchange the coat for another color if not return it. Upon returning to the store, the owner was the only person there besides the barber. After explaining that I wanted to change the coat he began to question my judgment upon not liking the color. After going through the store to see if there was anything similar to exchange it for I came to the conclusion that there wasn't really anything available. When conveying this to the man he then asked what I would like to do. After telling him I'd like to return the item due to the fact that the store had no other options available the response that I got baffled me. It was as if I just got sold a lemon at a used car lot. The man began to speak fast with an abrupt and rude undertone. He said that all I could receive was store credit because it was over two weeks. When I told him that he was the guy that rung me up and that I told him I would be gone for two weeks and that I was looking to do more business here. He explained that he wasn't the guy that sold me the coat. As if to say that he would not give me my money back, even though this coat was never worn or used and was still in its bag because he wasn't getting anything out of it, all he could think about was not losing money on the sale. He just repeated that I was over the two week policy. Keep in mind that I was explicit upon purchasing the item that I would be gone for two weeks when they sold this coat to me (which did not fit) and I was planning on spending several thousands of dollars more with Ed to build out my wardrobe. The man then pointed out quite condescendingly that I should have looked at the receipt where it was printed and that two weeks were up. I was shocked. I had no idea how to react. It was as if the only thing that was important to this man was a sale. Not the customer experience. Not even the return business that was literally coming back to the store. To be honest, I felt like I was taken advantage of. I originally left after working with Ed thinking that I finally was able to find someone to help build out my wardrobe. In fact, I was looking to spend well over 10k trying to find the perfect set since it all needed to be customized. But the way I was treated today felt both dishonest and impersonal. The interaction that I had with Jonathan is the sole reason why I will never do business with this store ever again. As a business owner myself, I understand how important it is to create return business and the way he treats his customers is atrocious. The fact that I was vocal about my schedule, that I was to be back after two weeks, and the fact that none of this information was given to me the day I purchased the coat (of which was already too big to begin with and needed tailoring) just shows where his priorities are for this store. I will never shop here again. The frustration and anger that I have towards the appalling behavior and way I was treated (by the owner I might add), is just inexcusable. I thought my business was welcome. Apparently it is not. read more

Before I get to the review, Nicky is by far the definition of barbering and you can tell as soon as you sit in his chair. If you're all about the 'hack and slash' kind of haircuts under 20 minutes then this place isn't for you, but if you want a haircut that I can only describe as the best haircut in my life, then read on. As for the haircut, I used to be one of the people who thought the 'hair ninja' way of getting cut was okay, until I stepped into Nick's shop. He fixed my hair so that it contoured to my natural hairline and part and did so with the precision of a surgeon. Attention to detail is everything to him and I noticed that with how thorough he is. His haircuts aren't meant to just look good, they're meant to look good and last (I'm comfortable enough to say that I don't need to even think about coming back in 2 weeks because I know my cut will look good well beyond that). He truly turns barbering into an art form and I will definitely be back. read more

Whoa. I overheard a profane exchange with a man who said he wanted to return a small item he had just purchased 15 minutes earlier. A few weeks ago, I was attending a meeting at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club (SFIAC), when I noticed a guy who was attired just a bit out of the ordinary. He was decked out in a period-correct 1930s-era suit, a gorgeous 1930s overcoat, a top-of-the-line, high-end fedora, and what I instantly recognized as Allen Edmonds spectator shoes. He wasn't wearing a costume; he owned the look and wore it with confidence. I stared at him for a bit, and then turned to the guy standing next to me and said, "Now there's a guy who knows how to dress like a real man." Yesterday, I met that man--purely by coincidence. I needed a haircut badly, and remembered that there was a barbershop at Cable Car Clothiers. I had been in the men's store a million times, but never the in-store barbershop. The online pictures of the place were cool--sort of a re-creation of a 1930s-era barbershop. I was a bit concerned though, because I wanted a real haircut, not a mediocre haircut in a theme barbershop. I called and talked to Nicky the Barber, a nice Italian boy from South Philly. He said he was booked solid through July, but had a cancellation at 1:00. I jumped on BART and made a beeline to take the appointment. As it turned out, he had recently become a member at the SFIAC, and had noticed me there as well. We knew many of the same people in the Italian Community. From the get-go, I liked this guy. The barbershop itself is retro 1930s, but not in a fake way. Everything from Nicky's clothing to the many tools and products of the barber trade are genuine vintage. It's not just a cheap branding idea, Nicky is really into this stuff. As it turns out, so am I, so the connection was instantaneous. But can he cut hair? Oh, hell yeah, he can cut hair. Without a doubt, I received the best haircut of my life. Mind you, I don't have much hair left at my age, but he performed miracles with what little I have left. His banter was quick-witted and he had the timing of a professional comedian. He's a real pro, totally dedicated to his craft, and just an all-around great guy to shoot the sh*t with. I can hardly wait to go back for my next haircut. I just hope I can get an appointment. read more

Right Ho! I have been a customer of Cable Car Clothiers for over 30 years. Recently, I brought in an old Fox frame umbrella to be repaired. I actually purchased the umbrella over 30 years ago at the original shop. The good folks sent the umbrella to New York and in a short time, my old bumbershoot was as good as new. Over the years, I have purchased suits, cashmere overcoats, poplin and khaki pants, ties, braces (suspenders to you Colonists), Church's English Shoes, Kent hair brushes and combs. I even purchased garters to hold up a man's socks as a joke for one of my buddies, who wears embarrassingly short socks. A real gentlemen always wears calf length socks, but my friend did not know that. The pièce de résistance occurred on 18/3/10 (note day before the month), when I was discussing my trip to Chatsworth House, which is a fine stately home in England. The young man, who must be the owner of the store, told me that it was his cousin's house. Being a street-wise home boy from the Inner Mission District, I was a little leery, but the young gentlemen produced an id that proved his last name was Cavendish. The Cavendishes have owned Chatsworth House for centuries. Jolly Good! read more
