You really don't get anymore real than this. I had some custom shoes made 15 years ago and they are still not warn out ! And they get more comfortable over time not that they aren't initially. We were married in July of 2022. Al's Attire was recommended by a very dear friend, so we already believed in the business when we arrived for our fitting for our wedding clothes. We spend nearly 7 hours being measured and carefully picking out fabrics. We both chose a 3-piece suit, so everything needed to be selected - right down to the buttons, and how many. We chose fabric for our shirts as well, and were measured. Our poor dog waited patiently. We ended the day by paying approximately $4,900 by the time we finally left. Three weeks before our wedding in Alaska, we hadn't heard a peep, so we checked in with Al. Turned out that none of our clothes had been made (we heard many excuses) AND all of our measurements had been lost! Al drove an hour north to our home at the time and measured us again. Al also informed us that some of the fabrics we had chosen were out of stock. We had to choose others. To make-up for all of this inconvenience, we were offered an extra set of vests for free, and he was going to consider a partial refund. Our wedding clothes were completed just in the nick of time - it was really stressful as we were leaving for a flight in less than one week. When we arrived at the venue, and put on our clothes from Al's, all of the measurements were off for each of us, and there were many egregious errors in the construction of the pieces. The vests were made with the incorrect fabrics. I gave up on the trousers part of my outfit (they were total "high waters") for the wedding, and wore something else; our plan of wearing matching, beautiful suits (that we could use again in the future) was completely foiled. We still have the suits, and sometimes (not often) reminisce about how poorly they fitted - and occasionally put them on again when we're in the mood to laugh and weep at the same time. We were absolutely disappointed by the whole experience, especially given the cost. We never received the additional vests that were promised, never received a partial refund when we asked (we asked about it all a couple of times), and ultimately never heard from Al again. We feel taken advantage of and brushed-off. It is unfortunate because we really liked Al personally. We thought we would always cherish the memory of the day we went for our fitting, and that we would could wear the clothes for years to come. This was the first experience for both of us having custom tailored clothes made, and it has become something we just don't talk about, because we both become irritable again. There are far worse things that can happen to one of this planet, so it is in perspective. However, it has taken me all of this time to write a review due to how troubling it all was, and the fact that I also don't like to have to write poor reviews - sorry Al, you really blew it for us. We have no use for the suits now as they fit so poorly - what a waste of time and money. We've nicknamed the business "All Satire" since the joke is on us. read more

Al's is the cornerstone of class in San Francisco's historic North Beach neighborhood. I was very happy to support these local artisans over some random retail suit slingers, even if it meant spending a little more, and MY GOD did they knock it out of the park with this beauty! Al is a pro and it was a true pleasure working with him to concoct the perfect suit design to fit my wedding needs. I had a very specific color in mind and of course Al had the perfect fabric. I felt like a kid in a candy store, flipping through his book of swatches, pin pointing the perfect lining. Al guided me through all of my stylistic options and in the end, I felt like we made something truly unique. Not only is the needlework top notch, but the leatherwork is superb too! I couldn't resist designing and ordering some custom boots to go with my fit. Giving Al's Attire 3 stars is generous. In November I brought my purse strap here to see if they could make another one for me. Renee said if I give him the strap with the hardware he could make one for me and I didn't have to come back when the new leather strap came in to measure it. I thought, ok, it'll save me a trip. He said it would take 2 weeks. Since it was around the holidays, I said I'll follow up with them after. Some weeks passed and no update. I was in town in January and came by. When I asked about my project, Renee brought out a purse that wasn't mine. He said my strap might be at the studio and he'll call. I hadn't heard back and I called again and Renee finally found my purse strap and then said he remembered that he ordered a strap and wasn't satisfied with the width of it. But that was never communicated to me. Somewhere down the line the tag on my old purse strap was lost. So I suspect that's why I didn't hear back and the project was forgotten. Anyway, he finally found my purse strap after I had to call again and ordered new leather for it. Once he found the purse strap in late January (finally), I then received the purse strap quickly via FedEx (no charge) in early February. The purse strap is good quality and fits my purse (hence the 3 stars). I am relieved that my purse strap wasn't lost. Overall, I had to call many times and it took 2.5 months to complete this small project. I like what they do (custom purses, clothes, shoes) but I do not have a desire to work with them in the future given this experience with them. read more

But it's what lies in the stockroom, the custom merchandise that has been specially crafted for various clients that would impress you. You will definitely get the sense that something very creative, unique is going on. Your imagination will be your only limitation. Al Ribaya, the owner proprieter, has ben dressing me immaculately since the opening of this store. Some of the pieces have been off the rack but a majority of them have been custom made pieces for various special events I have attended in the past. TL;DR - Custom suits, dresses, and more, and Al is a wonderful man After getting recommended by 3 different people, we had to stop by. Originally we were just going to take a look and talk about pricing, but but the time it was all over we had bought a custom suit, shirt, vest, shoes, and a tie! Al is extremely charismatic and such a fun character. He exudes San Franciscan energy - quirky, funny, and caring. Plus, he's a perfectionist and his dog Pepper will nudge you to play with him! The suit that Al made was absolutely perfect. It fit my man to the T - the slacks came perfectly to his ankles, and the shirt length was matched to the sleeve length of the jacket. The shoes were high quality as well. Each one of his pieces has a hand-sewn note too. Now, Al is NOT cheap, in fact, his creations are top tier. However, this also means that you're paying for craftsmanship. While I was in fact sticker shock, you get what you pay for, which is quality and an item - whether that's a leather purse, custom tie, etc - that will be a lifetime piece you can pass down to loved ones later. read more

Als is pretty magical. First of all, they're responsive over email! Second of all, Al is honest, perhaps to a fault. I was prepared to spend $650+ on custom shoes to recreate my wedding shoes which were too tight from the day I bought them. Al was the only person who was able to perfectly stretch them so they fit like new, and only charged $25 for the pleasure. He let my dog hang out with Pepper, their terrier, while my husband and I browsed. And the entire vibe was entirely unpretentious for a custom clothing shop. Plus the ready made stuff on the floor was gorgeous, and reasonably priced for the impeccable quality. His assistant Mariela is a gem. I hope I'm remembering her name right! read more

I had such a great experience at Al's Attire. They came highly recommended from boat loads of hip, respectable friends who place a high premium on vintage duds, and they did not disappoint! Al and the team were super welcoming, responsive and attentive from the first moment through the door and we had a great time shooting the breeze and pontificating on suits and custom footwear. Ultimately we put them up to designing and building a pair of custom Beatle boots for my wedding suit, and it was probably the best decision I made the whole wedding. I honestly don't know - - - - all about vintage shoes, boots, or dress shoes more generally and they went right to work fitting me for a last and wringing the required specifications out of me. We did an exhaustive google image search on all the parameters and at the end of the day I was like "honestly, I really just want a pair of boots that looks like I've been wearing them for years, like these ones" which turned out to be John Lennon's actual shoes on auction at Soetheby's for millions of dollars. At that point, it was like "- - - - all that noise, for $700 we damn well better make John Lennon's actual shoes" hahaha which we did and they came out great! There's so much about a wedding that centers around girls being frilly and enjoying their time with the hair and make up lady and for me, this was the one really nice thing that just felt great to wear. And everyone was right, custom Beatle boots was definitely the correct thing to wear with my vintage 1963 style Beatle suit. People were really impressed, and they continue to be really impressed. Since the wedding, I've been rocking them at public events (I'm a hip DJ that offers custom weddings, call me) and they never fail to get a gasp out of the audience. If you need anything custom made, Al is the tailor for you. I'd been looking for a camel coat for the past 2 winters. If I found one I liked, either it wasn't available in my size, or it was exorbitantly expensive. I finally decided to have one custom made for me. At Al's Attire. From the very beginning, it was a smooth experience. We first discussed what I wanted. I then booked an appointment for a fitting & to go over all the details. Picking the cut, the fabric, the lining, the buttons, etc. This was actually the first time I've ever had anything custom made for me, & I gotta be honest...it's a mad cool thing. It feels special. This will be the only coat of its kind. Love that. I was told it would take about 10 to 12 weeks. The price for one custom made camel hair coat? $630. Feeling like a rock star? Priceless. This was absolutely the worst experience I have ever had with any sort of tailor. To sum it up: Horrible customer service, terrible quality (looks threads and stiching everywhere), incompetent at measurements, lying about pricing and charging you more than promised, complete rip-off as compared to other custom attire shops, and the final product turned out nothing like the specs and did not even FIT ME. First, they lie to you about pricing by quoting you a lower price and then, after you've invested time and energy into your first fitting, they jack the actual price up from the estimate. I was told mutliple times that they would be able to make me a dress in my budget ($500) and on my timeline (3 weeks). After coming into the store, the woman quoted me a higher price ($630), and when I inquired, she claimed it was because of the fabrics I was looking at, and told me that if I stuck to a cheap fabric, we could keep it to $500. I went and bought my OWN fabric (spent $130), and the woman still refused to bring the price down to the originally agreed upon budget, claiming the price was higher because it was a "rush job"... which they were aware of when they gave me the original quote. To top it all of, the top they eventually delivered to me in New York DOES NOT EVEN FIT. It won't even zip up. They are clearly incompetent and don't care in the least about customer service. I've now spent $700 dollars on a dress that I can't even wear. This is my first ever bad yelp review, and while I'd hoped to resolve this amicable, the folks at Als attire wouldn't even give me back a dime. I've also since gotten 3 quotes from other tailors in the area, all of whom say they can do this piece for $200 from scratch. Should have done my homework before being ripped off... Trust me, stay away. (Update from months later - I had this garment remade from scratch in New York for my sisters wedding. Als is taking credit for it by posting it in their Instagram and here on yelp. Absurd.) read more

Al is the Gem of North Beach. I remember when he had a smaller shop and then he expanded and started even making shoes. I've always wanted a blazer made for me. I finally pulled the trigger and got fitted, chose some amazing unique tweed fabric with a blue satin lining. Al knows his stuff! The quality is impeccable. So disappointed. Long story short, I paid $200 and waited 5 weeks to basically get my same crappy boots I brought in. Thanks Al! Now the longer version: I had been searching for boots for months, none of them fit like I wanted. My old boots fit perfect but they were ten years old, and no longer made. They have a worn out heel and soul. The soul had a hole in it that was killing me to walk in. So I decided to buy a new pair and have them tailored to my likes. I brought in the new pair and an my old ones to demonstrate what I wanted. Al took a look at them and said, "Why don't you just fix the old pair? The leather is still good and it's soft. We can resole them and clean up the leather and re-stitch the lining if it needs it to make them look nice again." Oh my gerd, I was so excited!! I could still wear my old pair?!! So great! I was measured in the shop and they wanted to make a cast of my foot for the future. I said no thank you. This was all I was there for the moment. Al then told me that he could make a great pair of custom boots in brown for me, which was an interesting prospect, but $600 +. He said "I don't make any money on these repairs you know. It's barely enough to cover the cost of the cobbler." So why did you offer then? I had not come here looking to pay $600 bucks on a pair of boots. I was told they would take 3 weeks. After 5 weeks they called me to pick up. The outer sole looked new. I got them home and it turns out all they did was put a new sole on the bottom. The new sole was good, but the giant hole on the inside was still there. The leather looked just like it had when I brought them in. No reconditioning, restitching or cleaning them AT ALL. It's as if they didn't even LOOK at them! Such a bummer. I haven't brought them back because they are in the city and I am in the North Bay. I don't have time for 4 trips to the city just for boots. So I am back to the drawing board, minus 5 weeks and $200. :( read more

I have some favorite pretty unique, timeless, pieces: sport jacket, Italian shoes, and a one-of-a kind hat I lost one of my favorite hats, my jacket was getting worn, old If you had told me these items, especially the hat, could be replicated, I would say no way I spoke to several custom clothing shops and they all said no, go talk to Al Not only did they said yes, we can make these things but I could make improvements, such as fabric that was prone to less wrinkles, different colors, remove features I didn't want So I am waiting for the estimate for 2 jackets, 1 pair of shoes and 3-4 hats and I am thinking to myself this is going to be unaffordable Not only was it affordable they could make it happen! So I nervously left my only favorite hat, jacket and shoe They were meticulous on my measurements Several weeks later I get the long awaited call, your stuff is ready. She shows me the hat first and I say great you still have my original, snd she smiles and says, no this is the copy and I am blown away, awesome The jackets fit better, they repaired my old items just incredible They get 5 stars read more

Needed to fix my shoe heel because I wore them down by a lot when walking throughout the city with them! (Note to self: bring a change of shoes before and after work so I will not damage fancy shoes.) I finally paid a visit to check out Al's Attire when I walked by it countless times - never really needed anything boutique like and customized until my Ferragamo shoes were worn down like no tomorrow. I like how entering this place, it smells like antique leather and the articles seemingly appears to be man made or handcrafted. It was very enjoyable browsing around this shop. It was something new, but of the retained classic. They were late on their promised repair date. A courtesy call on whether it was done or not would have been appreciated. Nonetheless, they did a great job on the repair and I support these small boutique shops that has been around for (what feels like) decades. read more

I needed to find a competent and creative tailor to make a very important garment: my wedding dress. After getting an outrageous estimate from one tailor (referred by a friend), I found Al's Attire on Yelp. Al makes all manner of clothing, as well as shoes (which I plan to have made some day). Al also designs apparel for several local celebrities. He prefers not to advertise himself as a wedding gown designer, but more of a vintage clothing designer. The design process was relatively easy. Al understood and translated my design ideas into muslin in a very short amount of time. Once we went to actual fabric, the process slowed down for a variety of reasons. Fortunately, we had plenty of time in which to complete the dress. The dress was finished as promised and on budget. It's absolutely elegant! Who needs an overpriced designer gown--probably made in a southeast Asian sweatshop--when you can have a custom gown made by a local artisan for a fraction of the price?! Al did my husband's suit for our wedding in 2011. He also did custom vests for our groomsmen. The suit was absolutely beautiful, but be sure to get in there early, since these suits are handmade, and many are based on vintage patterns, it can take a few fittings till it is just right. I highly recommend Al. Also, a heads up to the men, Al is thorough, and he will ask you a ton of questions, as well as have you pick out fabric, look through patterns, etc. So the initial appointment will take a good chunk of time. If you want any alterations done expect to wait months before seeing your garment again. I got my most favorite vintage jacket tailored here and I had to call in twice to ask about when it was done. First time they said a month and a half. After a month and a half I called in and they said 2 weeks. 2 weeks later they said 2 more weeks. Once I got it it was too tight in the arms and chest. I've never brought anything to them after that experience. I now go to another tailor that charges half the price, does a better job and has a 1 week turnaround. read more

Terrible service. I ordered a custom hat in November of last year. It was to be the second hat made from a pattern I had created so I could clone my favorite hat. I was told it would be ready by the new year. No one ever called... I called repeatedly. It was finally ready in late January. It was an inch too big around and fell over my eyes, and it was an inch and a half to high and looked silly. I asked them to make it according to the pattern, which was the whole point of paying for a custom hat. I called weekly, and finally they said it was ready. I went in and it was still too tall, they only fixed the size around. Why would they do that? Did they think I wouldn't notice. When I was there I decided to get a label added with my phone number so that if I lost the hat it might come back to me. Last I heard there was some error with the label (wrong number? wrong name? I don't know) I am still waiting for my hat and it's nearly May. I am sad. I had such high hopes for this place and for the idea that you could have your favorite garments cloned or created for you. I really hope that some day they will call me and have my hat ready. An apology would also be kind of awesome. I am so terribly disappointed. read more
