I have not written a review in years and even then I don't often leave bad reviews. This tailor left me with no choice. Cliff notes: Failed to do the work agreed upon, were rude about it, demanded an extra payment to meet the original scope of work, left stains on my clothing. Full review: A few week ago I called asking if they can do surgeon cuffs (functional cuffs) on my new sport coat. I informed the person on the phone that the lining would need to be cut which they assured me they would do. The quote I received was $10/button hole for the entire job coming out to $80 for 8 buttons. Last week I took the sport coat to Spoon Tailor and was greeted by a man who introduced himself as Calvin; he confirmed that I spoke with him on the phone and that I wanted surgeon cuffs done. To make sure he understood the work I needed done, I brought another jacket with me which had surgeon cuffs added previously. After a brief examination Calvin confirmed that the lining would be cut (as expected). Pickup was the following Tuesday after noon. Today is when I was supposed to pick up the sport coat. Just to confirm it was ready, I called around noon. The man on the phone was not sure which article of clothing I had brought in, but after a few minutes he was able to find it and let me know that they were in the process of completing the work. This is typical of tailors but it did raise a bit of a red flag. When I arrived a different man (Andrew?) greeted me. I checked the sport coat and immediately noticed that they did not cut the lining and instead just made button holes and attached the buttons. I asked why it was not completed as discussed. His answer? It can't be done like that. He then called over another man (not Calvin) who when he looked at the sleeve *rudely* informed me that it can be done but it would cost an extra $60. He then ran off to the back to his work area. I let them know I wouldn't be paying extra to do the work they agreed to do. I begrudgingly threw $80 on their table and left their store. While walking to my car I noticed that there were orange *food stains* all around the button holes that were not there before. Clearly they were doing work with dirty nasty fingers. I am not sure if these stains will clean off. They could have very well ruined my blazer. Furthermore, they did a half-assed job sewing the buttons. Bottom line: Potentially RUINED my sport coat. TERRIBLE and RUDE customer service. EXTORTIONARY practices. ZERO remorse or care that they wronged me. read more

Absolutely fantastic company. Came here for a custom suit. I'm quite tall but am not particularly big and as such it was hard to find a suit that fit me in general. What's more I wanted a green suit as that is my favorite color and I was getting married and wanted something special. I am not exaggerating when I say that Calvin pulled every color off the shelf looking for the right green during our consultation. He was incredibly patient, knowledgeable and informative about the process. It took several months and many adjustments but the final product is something I hope to have for the rest of my life. It was fit to my body and was incredibly comfortable. Benson was incredibly helpful, even allowing me to meet up with him at his home in mountain House for the final fitting and pickup to save me on commute time to San Francisco. Wow wow wow! Where do I start? Andrew is the absolute best. I am vegan and wanted a custom suit that didn't contain wool. I had been to a few of the other custom suit shops nearby and learned there was suit fabric made from bamboo. I didn't quite like the experience/options/staff/prices at these other shops so I called Andrew to see if he carried the bamboo fabric. Although he didn't, he was willing to call up a supplier and procure the bamboo material I was looking for. I was impressed! Andrew helped me choose a beautiful dark blue color and was diligent and thoughtful throughout the whole process. Also, the prices were better than all the others in the area. We were on a tight timeline due to supply shortages/shipping times; Andrew hustled and kept in constant communication with me to ensure I would have the perfect suit for my wedding. I cannot recommend Spoon Tailor highly enough! I worked with their team to craft the three-piece burgundy suit I wore for my wedding (see the attached photo). Calvin was an absolute joy to work with: warm, kind, and honest. I am very particular about how my clothing fits but also inexperienced in the world of tailoring, and Calvin was very patient in answering all of my questions and giving me straightforward feedback on what he thought would and wouldn't work. He and his tailor truly went above and beyond with the final fitting at the end of the process. Since I live in Sacramento and was running out of time before the wedding, they spent more than an hour with me making small tweaks in partial steps so that I could see/feel how it fit before the final stitching was completed. I'm going to sound like a commercial but this is what I was thinking when I discovered this FiDi gem on the edge of Chinatown: why pay for an off the rack shirt when I could get a local tailor to make me a custom shirt for $80? Suits are about $500. This family run business leverages their SF-Hong Kong based stores to make custom shirts in SF at Hong Kong prices. Andrew manages the SF store, his uncle is the owner and tailor. Andrew's brother is based in Hong Kong and manages the business from that end. Quality of the cloths was great. How should I put this gently? I have short legs and a long torso. I have thick, squating thighs. I have a 31 inch waist with a 42 inch chest. I CANNOT buy off the rack. If I buy a jacket that fits my top, I get 36 inch pants. If I buy pants that fit, the jacket hangs like an oversized coat. Somehow, Calvin made it work. And it looks damn good. He took his time to take my measurements. He took his time walking me through the various fabrics I can choose from. From beginning to end, it was a VIP, white glove experience. Aside from getting a dark charcoal suit, I also got a white shirt fitted to my body. For the first time, I didn't have a short hanging out at the end of the night, which is typical of the oversized, un-tailored shirts I used to get at Macy's and Nordstrom. And it's really for $20 more!! I thought it was cool.that I had the option to choose different color buttons on my white shirt. This way, I can wear the white shirt without a tie and still have a contrast. I opted for black buttons on a white shirt. I can't wait to go back for a few more shirts and maybe a dark blue suit. They create the "skeleton" of the suit here in San Francisco. Then they sent it back to Hong Kong where a tailor will complete the suit for you. You're getting a roughly $2000 suit for about half that price! I just referred my friend to go an get a new suit for his wedding. But don't take my word for it. Calvin and the rest of the folks in this shop are amazing. I'm a tall lanky guy with one leg longer a bit longer than the other, and I've never had any luck with Suits. I've tried made-to-measure and everything else but have always been disappointed. Spoon made me a bespoke suit with top notch fabric at a similar price to what I was quoted by the MTM shops in town. After dealing with 3 months with Indochino suits for a number of remakes and alterations, which I returned for a full refund, I went to Spoon Tailor in Chinatown. Upon arrival on a Saturday morning, I was greeted by Calvin, who's uncle is the master tailor at Spoon Tailor. They already had a few customers in store, but Calvin quickly asked me a few questions and got me started. And since I wanted to get fitted for a customer made suit, he gave me a number of fabric options to choose from. Two basics 2-piece suit options at Spoon Tailor are the $999+tax option and ~$1250+tax option. Both options are 130's wool fabric made in Italy. I chose the $999+tax, and added a vest for $300. The first option takes about 4~5 weeks to make, and the second option takes 4 weeks, just because they have the fabric in stock. They also had a ton of gorgeous linings with different patterns. I chose blue paisley to go with my grey suit. Once the fabrics were selected, Calvin thoroughly took measurements and photos. At this point, he told me all about my "abnormal" features, which assured me that Spoon tailor really understands what "custom-made" really means. Once the measurements were taken, I put $500 deposit and scheduled for 1-st fitting session in 2 weeks. I will update my 1-st and final fitting experience with pictures. (FYI, I have traps and softbal-like shoulders with narrow shoulders, and these features could not be captured by Indochino measurements, even with the Iodochino traveling tailor.) 1-st fitting update, 7/19 Firs fitting of the jacket and the pants took approximately 15 minutes. This time, the master tailor, the uncle mentioned above, came out and marked all the little details on my jacket and the pants. The jacket did not have the lining yet, and the pants did not have zippers or buttons. We also talked about the general style of the suit, and made 2nd-fitting appointment. My experience on the 1-st fitting is consistent with the initial meeting. I will update again after my 2nd-fitting in 2 weeks. read more

I bought 4 tailored shirts a about 6 months ago. (4 shirts was where they will give you a small discount) came out to about $80 a shirt. Fit was great, no complaints here. Not impressed by the fabric, definitely could tell a huge difference in quality of designer shirts and their fabric. It was tough to tell when just feeling the fabric in the sample book, but definitely could feel it when wearing the shirt. Also after about 5 wears, the buttons on my wrists are coming off already. That was very disappointing... (this was with only dry cleaning too). $80 for a custom fit shirt is not a bad price, but man i was hoping for a little more quality. read more

Highest quality products with the best service for competitive if not lower prices. What more could you ask for? This is a no brainer. I personally have had suits and jackets tailor-made to my liking and my bodytype, and they always do an excellent job. I also like how they have my dimensions on file so that I can pick out a fabric and they can design a first draft of a suit or jacket or pants without me initially needing to come in and try it on. Love it. They do suits, suit pants, shirts, jackets, and general tailoring too. I asked them to tailor a few things that did not come from their business for me. They always, and I mean always, do a great job. The service is impeccable. They are very professional and actually came to my office when I needed to try some things on because I was too busy at work that day. I do not think that they normally do this but it does show that they are very committed to their craft and building their business. Their prices are very competitive if not cheaper than their competitors. If you're looking at having a suit, jacket, pants, or a shirt tailor-made I would definitely call Spoon and either be done with it or put them and your short list to do comparison-shopping. I have recently lost several pounds and had to get basically a whole new wardrobe. This included bringing in all of my suit jackets and pants where possible. I gave them several things to bring in and they did so for very cheap. One of my jackets they brought in for free because I had had it made within a year of needing to do this tailor work. Last time I was in the store there was a businessman from Atlanta who had flown in to San Francisco to see a client and he had heard about this place and was getting several new shirts and suits done. Goes to show you that people are flying all over the country for Spoon. i would have easily given these guys 10 stars if it was possible. i've been in search of a custom tailor shop in the bay area similar to those in hong kong for years. since discovering spoon tailor shortly before the end of 2010, i have had several shirts and sport coats made. there are a wide variety of materials to choose from. even the entry level materials are of top quality. as for wool fabrics, they carry loro piana, holland & sherry, marzoni, dormeuil and will soon carry zegna. for shirts, some of their top materials are thomas mason and cistes, both from italian mills. andrew, the proprietor, is extremely patient and pleasant who will help you design your shirts and suits the way you like. if the outcome is not what you had in mind, they will tirelessly work with you to make it right. you do not leave disappointed....ever. i'm perhaps their pickiest and most demanding client but they have met or exceeded my expectations every single time. i'm very impressed with their attention to even the smallest of details. i've had the pleasure of meeting their master tailor and he is a seasoned pro who excels in his trade. yeah i've been to shops where you get to pick single breast, double breast, two button, three button, side vent, single vent, no vent, wide lapel, narrow lapel...spoon tailor does all that....but the master tailor has been in this business so long that if you want an armani cut or zegna cut suit, he can do that for you as well. want high arm hole suits like james bond? no problem. want that zegna milano cut that fits like a glove? no problem. want that extra ticket pocket? homeboy can do it. and the sleeve buttons are fully functional with buttons made of bone, not resin. their workmanship rivals my zegna suits at a fraction of the cost. i actually come out ahead going custom. who would have ever thunk that? read more

I put these guys in a tough spot. I came in just 4 weeks before my wedding and needed a suit. On top of that I told them that I was losing about 15 pounds before my wedding and that I was lifting weights lots. Calvin and the awesome tailor dude (ugh, forgot his name) had such a can do approach and said no problem! They made me a super sweet suit. It's truly bespoke and fits me perfectly even though i had such short timing, lost 15 pounds around my torso and legs (but less weight in my shoulders and arms). Amazingly, they knew exactly how to accommodate for that. Great price too! I'll never go to another tailor! These are my guys! read more

So far, so good. Their prices have increased slightly on the shirts, $95 each, while full suits are still $799. Trousers alone are 1/3 the cost of the suit with the jacket being the remaining 2/3. I stopped in for my 1st fitting, the shirt came out great, I've never had anything fit so perfectly before. I'll be sure to post some pictures when the trousers are back from Hong Kong. read more

I went in the other day for the first time intent on only ordering a test shirt but with Calvin's attentiveness to attention to detail, the great (and endless) selection of fabrics and seeing happy customer after another come in to pick up their things, it took every ounce of will power not to go ahead and order a suit. I'll be back in a couple of weeks to pick up my shirt and no doubt will go ahead and order a suit then too. *edit- The shirt arrived after about 3 weeks (rather than the expected 2) and was perfect in the arms, cuffs and overall length but the size across the chest was surprisingly large, the collar a little more snug than discussed (and a little high for my taste) and the color of the embroidery was off (violet rather than blue). Calvin was much more rushed today in taking notes on changing the chest size and I'm stuck getting this sent back to China for the alterations around the Chinese New Year so things are taking longer than usual but I'm still holding out hope. **edit part 2 Well, the final shirt f i n a l l y arrived and what a huge disappointment! After a ridiculously long wait, the shirt went from much, much too big (across the chest) to just much too big to finally, much too tight. I was ready to just take the shirt politely and just give it to Goodwill but when Calvin added care instructions that it should only be washed in cold water and never ironed, I lost it and just walked out. Out $114 and out a lot of time and trouble. The idea of a custom fit shirt was really exciting but as far as Spoon vs. off the rack, off the rack wins hands down. :( read more

Andrew did a great job paying attention to the small details (Collar spread, the slanted-ness of my shoulders, whether I would be wearing the shirt with/without tie, etc...) and delivered a high-quality, cool-looking shirt at a reasonable price. Great experience for very good custom made suits (bespoke NOT made-to-measure) and excellent compared to off-the-rack. The guys are very knowledgable (they are not suit salesmen) and provide great attention-to-detail. They also do shirts and trousers separately. Wide selection of fabrics and patterns in a small shop (much greater than you'll find at a department store) which can be a bit of a challenge if you're not sure what you want. I've always had trouble buying off-the-rack suits. The pants that come with the jacket never fit and are often beyond alterable (is that a word?). I bought a $1200 Zenga last year and even with alterations it doesn't fit like it should. That's what brought me to Spoon. I ordered a bespoke suit and a couple dress shirts last month. From start to finish it took about 4 weeks and the price was very reasonable. The suit and shirts fit like a glove. I got a TON of compliments. It's like flying first class. Spoon Tailor is truly unique. Although I've worn tailored suits for many years, I had never purchased a bespoke suit. Calvin, Andrew, and the master tailor were outstanding, professional, patient with my endless questions, and delivered more than promised. Finding a bespoke tailor anywhere in the United States is difficult; finding an outstanding one is nearly impossible. So far I've had three shirts made here. Andrew has a fair selection of fabric to select from and allows a great deal of customization - anywhere from collar, cuffs, placket, buttons, pleats, etc. He was great at advising on the positioning of the pleats and how tailoring of the armholes affect movement. For ~$80 each, Andrew measured and had made me some pretty trim, good quality shirts. If you aren't going to Hong Kong or Shanghai anytime soon (where you can still get bespoke menswear for cheaper) then Spoon's is a great place to go. And if you're paying around that much at a department store then at least take the time to come here and you'll get something that fits much, much better. Another plus is that once you're satisfied with your measurements Andrew will have it saved so you can simply place orders and have them shipped to you (helps if you live in the South Bay). read more
