With the heat we've had the past few summers and then the snow that seems to be a yearly event now, we thought it was time to get a really good widow upgrade. We also wanted out house painted after installation and Clear Choice set that up for us as well. (See my review for Triple A Painting). What we loved most about dealing with Clear Choice Windows & Doors was the personalized service we received. They have a large selection of window frame materials to choose from and our choice of fiberglass was an easy one. It was explained to us that fiberglass windows are stronger than both vinyl and wood, making them incredibly resilient to weather and climate -- perfect for PNW homeowners. From start to finish, our team of window installers provided friendly service, excellent craftsmanship, and it took only two days to install the 10 new windows in our home. Before, during and after, the team cleaned up and kept the work site tidy at all times. There was minimal damage to our landscaping as well. We can feel a definite difference in the inside temperature of our house since the new windows were installed. Our AC doesn't seem to work as hard and it takes less time to cool off in the summer and to heat in the winter. The outside look is classy and fits well with the style of our house and the neighborhood. We highly recommend Clear Choice Windows & Doors if you're looking for new windows.

They resided my entire house (after another company did an awful job that resulted in water damage) and replaced several windows and installed a cedar soffit. Communication could use improvement, and I would not recommend them to replace any exterior doors (their bid was insanely high). There were a few issues along the way (damaged meter box, dented gutter) that I wish would have been brought to my attention, but everything was addressed and in the end the crew went above and beyond to make me happy. They did an excellent job installing a beautiful cedar soffit, which is now my favorite part of my house.

But I do need to point out some glaring details about this project as a note to myself more than anyone else before hiring this company. I first reached out to them in November last year and Manuel responded back very promptly using the odd messaging system Yelp uses. We traded a few messages, and Justin came out not long after to do a survey on the broken window in the bathroom which looked like it had been hit with a BB or a bullet. He gave me an estimate on replacing that window but pointed out that a lot of my other windows either had a lot of condensation build-up and/or mold beginning to grow out of the dampness. I ended up making the executive call to replace them all. It was a perfectly enjoyable hour or two discussing and then finishing up paperwork. He said he'd be in touch in about 4 - 6 weeks and left. That's where communication on an unprompted basis ended. I waited for almost 2 months before I picked up on the old Yelp thread because no one ever reached out during that period. Manuel told me twice he'd get back to me, but he never did. Someone named Skylar called me and told me Manuel had left on family leave. What kind of professional leaves his customers without notifying them that they are being handed to another representative? Then Skylar handed me off to Luke and despite my request to give me a heads up so I could let my work know if I needed to be home, he never confirmed anything. A third party delivery service showed up while I was sleeping and I had to clear out my garage so they had room. Then half an hour later Alex and his team showed up to start installing. I'm lucky my job was flexible enough to take me not coming in that week, but for other customers, do they have that kind of agility? It took them two days total to do the main job and then finish. After that Alex showed me the work and I signed a paper that he said was more for his team (I do a lot of projects for work and I'm pretty sure they were contractors for ASW). After that Luke said he had to do a walk for job completion that was never followed up on. I called him as promised and he said he'd get back to me, but he didn't. Then came the Docusign asking me to verify the job walk was done. I didn't sign it, thinking he had to do his walk. This was a $20k job. This is the first house I've ever owned. I wanted to be sure. He then said the job walk was done and I signed off on the work which meant the paper I signed with Alex was the final sign off, but he could have just explained this and saved us an email thread. One final laughable detail is his email to me didn't have an attachment, so his marketing team had to send me the photo he referenced to verify I signed. All in all, this whole process left me feeling like I was an inconvenience to them rather than a customer. The plus side: The windows look great. They reduce outside temperature and noise at a noticeable level. But ASW is just the coordinator. Other companies manufacture the windows, deliver them and install them. The one thing they should excel at is communication with the customer, but they decidedly don't.

We'd received a few other quotes, and Jose is competitively priced. His wasn't the cheapest we received, but based on his estimate and the clear understanding he had of the project and what his plan was, we chose Zurc Construction because we wanted a contractor that looked a project from every angle and really understood the scope, rather than someone who would just do the bare minimum. Zurc Construction installed sister joists and totally reinforced the ceiling support so they could add OSB flooring, a pony wall, and make it much safer to access. They installed a pulldown ladder and did a beautiful job framing the access point. They kept everything super clean and adhered to all COVID protocols. Jose is super responsive and was happy to answer any questions we had along the way. He is also very proactive and if he sees something that might be problematic or that you might want to have input on, he always checks with you before continuing with the project. We were incredibly nervous about such a big job (you never know what you might find in attics!), but we knew that Jose and his team could handle it, and we couldn't be happier. We wish we had more house projects for them! Zurc Construction gets our highest recommendation!

Southeast Portland

My Northeast Portland neighborhood isn't what it used to be. The City's policy of urban…read moredensification has brought big-city crime with it. Finding tool marks on my front door jamb with the accompanying bump-key exploits that ruined my deadbolt gave me pause. The fact that elderly family members were too scared to answer the door for mail deliveries when alone in the house led me to Mascotte. Research into their product included a letter from the Portland Police Bureau requesting Mascotte's advanced training courses for first responders into how to defeat their doors for rescues and dynamic entry situations. If the police and their battering rams can't get in without help, how is a would-be burglar going to deal with this product? That was my thinking when I called. Mr. Mascotte's wife was very cordial and helpful, showing us the product line and trying to point us toward the least expensive models. She really was doing the opposite of upselling, and small wonder--these top-of-the-line doors are expensive! Fortunately I had the funds to buy one of the fancier models for my front and back doors. Mascotte's representative came out to take precise measurements and I made a half-down payment at that time. The welded steel, powder-coated doors were custom-made in about ten weeks or less at their local facility and installed by an expert father-son contracting team who have their hands full doing mostly Mascotte installs. The old screen doors were hauled away and the doors were solidly drilled into place through stucco into the house's framing. The one-way bolts were painted the matching base color and I paid the workmen their installation fee and the balance for the doors. They were so securely fastened that even if a truck tied chains to the door and ran for it, the side of the house would give way before the door and its hardware would be compromised. They're that well built--like what you would see in a prison or bank vault, but in several pleasing designs and colors. They really class up the place! My neighbor was so jealous that he immediately called the company and ordered his own custom front door, which was an odd 4' by 8' size. It is glorious. I was so happy with the new doors that I engaged Mascotte to return and install a double door to secure my patio entrance. Now I feel truly safe and secure in my own home again, and so do my relatives! Trust me, there are no new tool marks on these doors. There are much easier targets for thieves elsewhere in the neighborhood. The doors are breathtakingly beautiful, as well. They are extremely well sealed and we no longer experience any drafts at any of the entryways, no matter how hard the east wind blows out of the Columbia Gorge. The glass windows can be swapped out easily with screens in the summer, and nobody is getting through that screen door! The only drawbacks we've experienced other than the inconvenience of using a key to get in or out of the house (a small price to pay for security) are three. One is the different keying for the patio door because it was ordered at a separate time from our front and back doors, but this was explained to us at the time and we didn't really care since we don't use it frequently. Two is the fact that the deadbolt locks are exposed to the elements and rainwater gets into the mechanism rather easily, which means dry wax lubrication is a necessity to avoid tedious regular maintenance. After much testing, we finally settled on DuPont Chain-Saver Wax-Based Chain Lube, which won't freeze or run and you don't have to wipe your keys off before putting them back in your pocket! The last is the expense of the custom doors, which we love for their looks and which we felt were well worth it. The more plain, introductory basic models are just as sturdy but cost a lot less because they're more easily welded in quantity. We would hate to leave our home now because we couldn't take these beauties with us! I've seen other security doors and they are mainly a deterrent to crime. Mascotte doors will keep the police out--unless they first ask very nicely.

From the first phone call through installation, everyone I dealt with was professional and polite…read more They know their products, and worked with us to get what we wanted. My new security door looks awesome and I cannot say enough good things about Mascotte. Thank you for an easy experience.
