And I'm so glad I did. What a great group of people. Jose is calm, quiet, friendly and does everything in his power to keep things on track and done correctly. His timeline was reasonable, his bid was very competitive, and the job was finished in a reasonable amount of time. Jose and his team were absolutely wonderful with rough finishing our attic. We had no internal access and no flooring (just exposed joists) so the attic was pretty useless and unsafe. We'd received a few other quotes, and Jose is competitively priced. His wasn't the cheapest we received, but based on his estimate and the clear understanding he had of the project and what his plan was, we chose Zurc Construction because we wanted a contractor that looked a project from every angle and really understood the scope, rather than someone who would just do the bare minimum. Zurc Construction installed sister joists and totally reinforced the ceiling support so they could add OSB flooring, a pony wall, and make it much safer to access. They installed a pulldown ladder and did a beautiful job framing the access point. They kept everything super clean and adhered to all COVID protocols. Jose is super responsive and was happy to answer any questions we had along the way. He is also very proactive and if he sees something that might be problematic or that you might want to have input on, he always checks with you before continuing with the project. We were incredibly nervous about such a big job (you never know what you might find in attics!), but we knew that Jose and his team could handle it, and we couldn't be happier. Jose and Chevo did an incredible job on our gorgeous new bathroom floor! We needed our bathroom sub-floor and tile replaced because the shower was leaking. When Jose gave me a quote, he didn't second-guess the tile I'd already bought (another contractor did). Jose was up-front with a concern that we wouldn't be able to match some original tile I wanted to keep. We figured out a solution, and that care and attention to detail throughout the project was so important -- the floor turned out even better than I hoped. They were also patient and persistent -- I messed up ordering the tile I wanted twice and Jose didn't make me feel bad about the delay. Then they arrived quickly to finish the floor as soon as the correct tile arrived. I don't often write reviews but Zurc construction is worth sharing. I called Jose to remodel a two bedroom apartment unit that had been occupied by the same tenant for over twenty years. This remodel included the kitchen, a bath and a half bath, repairing and retexturing all of the walls, installing LVT on the floors, installing moulding and doors, install new shut offs, install new switches and plugs, and other stuff that comes up in a major remodel. First he gave a bid that was within my budget. As additional work was added it was at a fair price. Second, Jose was able to start right away and he worked on the job a full day everyday. He completed the job sooner than I ever imagined. Third, Jose was easy to work with as questions came up and had reasonable solutions. All in all it was a great experience as the finished apartment looked great. He will be the guy I will call when I need the next unit remodeled. read more

Jose Cruz is an old fashioned professional in a modern business. His prices are fair and clear, his timetables reliable and prompt. But his work quality is far, far above expectations. We have a modest, century-old home in NE Portland. The neighborhood is comfortable, the house is well worn, yet attractive. But we needed help. Over the years several problems emerged about which other contractors and specialists made big promises with small results. These were unglamorous problems, the kind unsuited for those "gallery" pics contractors use to display their work. They mean much to homeowners but don't 'show' - reoccurring rodent incursions, growing foundation flaws, dubious seismic stability, funky wiring, dysfunctional bath appliances, dim lighting, poor heat and cooling, inadequate storage, sticky doorjambs and locks, and so on. These were part of a basement retreat space used by the renters and a real asset to the building. Some repairs were matters of convenience but the majority were urgent and important. Before Jose came the expensive architect, several exterminators, foundation consultants, and assorted contractors. All took money and time. None solved problems. The issues did not fit neatly into their cut-and-paste categories or work or pricing. Then along came Jose. At first, I was wary. We discussed the work stage by stage, and Jose offered gentle reassurance. It was a big job done in little pieces - removing wall covering, sheer-wall reinforcing, foundation bolting, sealing, plumbing, wiring, rerouting, reinforcing - behind the scenes stuff, out-of-sight stuff. The stuff that matters when the job is done. And I had some quirky, non-standard notions about big showers and fancy toilets, precise under cabinet lighting, special paint and sealant, and others. Jose did it all, correcting my errors, adding his own sound, more affordable alternatives, then carried the job forward to a cozy, functional, delightful living space. In the end, the finished project far exceeded my anticipations at a cost much less than even my most optimistic hope. Over the past 40 years I've owned and or managed 18 commercial properties and residences and worked with dozens of contractors and building specialists. Jose is the best - patient, precise, professional, and personable. You will not find a better partner for your project. read more
