NOT MILITARY FRIENDLY. DISCRIMINATED AGAINST ME BECAUSE I'M IN THE MILITARY. Very disappointed with their management and customer service. For being "the world's foremost outfitter" they are extremely un-versed in Virginia and Federal firearms laws. I ordered a bolt action rifle online and had it delivered to the store. Since I'm military I provided a copy of my orders. Even though my orders and unit are addressed in Arlington, VA, since the NAME of my unit is "Headquarters Marine Corps Washington DC" they said that they couldn't transfer the rifle to me, even after I explained the situation. Further, I asked to transfer the rifle as a non-Resident (VA allows for the transfer of rifles and shotguns to non-residents), but they said since I'm military, they were not willing to do the transfer, even though I am legally allowed. In other words, they won't transfer the rifle to me because I'm in the military. Had I just been a civilian from another state, I would have been fine. read more

Went to return a few small items. Called the store before I drove 45 minutes. The recording was normal. Normal hours. No changes due to the virus. I get there and there's a huge line. Finally someone comes out and explains they are only allowing ten in at a time. Even if you just need to return something that would take 2 minutes you have to wait for people who take an hour to pick out a firearm. CHANGE THE VOICEMAIL OR PUT THIS NEW INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE. Don't shop here for the time being. read more

In short: I just wasted a Sunday afternoon waiting for someone to help at the guns section. The gun section "outfitters" are few, and the only few are too cool to care about essentially anything: you, guns, or the Cabela's store. Elaboration: On a Sunday afternoon I walked into this Cabela's store with some Gift Cards I received in hand, hoping to buy a 380 auto pocket handgun. This was not my first time coming to this store, but it was the first time trying to buy a gun. I took a number (B50) which is supposed to be the order in which the staff (called "outfitters") serves. I stayed at the counter looking at guns on display for about half an hour, the number counter stuck at 45. There was only one outfitter helping a couple of customers finalizing their gun purchase, which was fine. We know paperwork takes a while. I went to check out the ammo section, which is next to the gun counters. I came back to see the number still stuck at 45. It was about 30-35 minutes after I took a number. I kind of thought it was ridiculously slow, so I took picture No.1 shown in the gallery. I realized the gun section was now empty: no outfitters are left helping. Only several (definitely not many, at least compared to the opening weekends) customers leaning at the glass display eager to get helped. So at that time I took picture 2 shown in the gallery: no one was helping. I wandered further away (about five aisles) to take a look at recurve bows, came back to see the gun section still empty, with zero outfitters helping customers, who were still leaning against glass and eager to get helped. This was picture 3 shown in the gallery, about 10-15 minutes apart from picture 2, zero outfitters visible. So at that time I walked into the "Gun Library" right at one end of the gun counter to see the guns displayed there, and when I came back 5 minutes later, voila, the counter turned 52. I got upset and asked one outfitter helping customer 52, why he did not call 50. Apparently annoyed of my interruption, he replied with an angry face, "I called every number, you were not here, you take a new one now," as if it was my fault. So let's break it down here. Apparently he expected me to stay at the gun counter, which had been empty for a better part of half an hour, stuck at 45 for an hour, for his unpredictable return. Once he returned, he "called" number at a volume that one could not hear at one end of the gun section (I NEVER LEFT THE GUN SECTION). There was no bench to wait on, there was no amplified announcement. In retrospect, the outfitter probably didn't even make any attempt to call (remember, I was there at one end of the gun section when he supposedly called: I was not away from gun section then). He just whispered 46 through 51 real quick and noticed customer 52 leaning against the glass. He did not care that anyone could have been waiting, standing, for an entire effing hour on a Sunday afternoon. So I stepped out, having lost all appetite to buy a gun here. Moral for you: if you really want to buy a gun here, take your number, and stay at the counter, standing, for the auspicious return of his majesty outfitter who will bestow upon you pleb the kind assistance of selecting a gun, some time in the future. Because it's never them helping you, it's you begging them for the favor. read more

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's is regularly practicing "Bait and Switch". They send emails about discount offers on products that they never have available. But they always have a very similar product at a much higher price. My examples involve guns. I have searched 5 different guns on their website. Within a week, I've received emails offering each of them at very good prices. I have immediately gone to the website to order and each and every one shows not available, out of stock. Stopped by the Gainesville Cabela's to buy a fishing rod and reel. I had money on my Rewards card and was looking forward new gear for the season. Impossible to spend my money. No one was interested in assisting me. When I did chase down a self proclaimed fishing gear expert they were clueless. I was bothering them. Dozens of employees wandering the store aimlessly attempting to avoid customers. This store will fail. I will order my gear online to use up my Cabela's rewards points. I have never been in a Cabela's before but I can tell you I won't go back. Everything was way over priced, from the ammo, to the targets to the fat food at the entrance of the store. I'm not a fan of super stores (hate Wal-fart except for good deals on ammo). To me it holds just enough of the crap that labels people who go into it as redneck, but annoying that they charge country club prices for it. You're better off going to the local hunting or gun store to find the real deal. Plus, this is located at the end of a street that can hardly support traffic without it. Total CF. CABELA'S Gainsville Va. We were there today. Very Very DISAPPOINTED. It was just like a Gander Mountain. Not as good as a Bass Pro Shop. I will never go again and will tell people to not waist there time. Everything thing there can be bought online cheaper and faster. Now the store in Reeding Pa. or Wheeling WVa is worth going to. Those stores are amazing. The Gainsville Va. store is NOTHING like them so don't waist your time. Please trust me. This was my first visit and experience at this store. Overall it is a HUGE disappointment unfortunately. As others have stated my experience dealing with the staff handling the firearms was less then ideal. Out of all the stores and individuals I have worked with over the years purchasing firearms this store and the staff were the poorest. I was there to pick up a firearm that I ordered online. Now..I will say the only reason I used Cabalas for this transaction was they were the only retailer to have what I wanted before a rebate ended for this particular firearm. Looking at their selection and prices while waiting they are way overpriced and I would never go back to buy a firearm from them. As others have stated when you go to the firearms section you take a number like you are waiting at the DMV. So, I took a number but the problem that I ran into and seeing in other complaints was they are way understaffed behind the counter and not once while waiting by the counter did another staff come up to me and ask if I was being helped. I saw Cabala staff members walking around the firearms section..not behind the counter...doing nothing. I consider myself pretty low maintenance and understand things happen but it took 20 minutes before I saw a staff member behind the counter. There were several other individuals waiting to be assisted as well and we all had numbered tickets. I finally tracked someone down to get some assistance on starting the process of completing my paperwork to complete my transaction. Then I noticed the two individuals who came back behind the counter were not following their own system of calling customers numbers. So customers where very frustrated and I saw several leave. Overall I would not recommend this store to handle any FFL or to purchase firearms from. You're much better off purchasing your firearm from a reputable dealer online and having it transferred to a local FFL agent. You will save money, less headache, and from my experience a much better experience. read more

Their two-storey locations are better. This format, how the new stores will be built, have minimal outdoorsman decor and no place for a meal. The older stores are worth a tourist visit but these are more cash and carry. I drove two hours to Gainsville and it was a disappointment. If you've been to the store in Wheeling or Harrisburg this one is a bummer. read more

Ok, while I did not try to buy a firearm, I buy all my guns from Trader Jerry, I did buy powder, ammo, snacks and soft goods. No it is not the colossal stores that they used to make, but it still is a great store that I like very much. I was warmly welcomed outside, and as we entered, told about the special events and asked if they could point us in the direction of anything. So we knew the store and found the powder (most small gun shops have discontinued carrying powder, and the hazmat fees if ordered online are less than great), perused their ammo selection (a bit picked over as there are some rebates and sales right now, and looked at some clothes. Each department we were greeted within a few minutes and asked if we needed anything. Never once felt hassled. We had a great time, and am happy that we have a shop so close. read more

Having a Cabela's so close has been convenient and it's now my first goto choice when looking or restocking my fishing arsenal. Almost every time I have visited the store, Brad, in the fishing section, has offered me great advice. He is knowledgeable and honest about the products which I highly respect. I've noticed that while I wait to have a reel spooled a few times, he was very attentive to his customers even though he had a few folks waiting to pick his brain. Great job Cabelas on hiring this guy. The only thing that could be better is to better restock the shelves but I'm sure it will work itself out soon. Tight lines! read more

The firearm counter is manned by horrible and unproffessinal personnel almost every time I visited. I bought a Berreta M9A3 and a Wilson 1911 from them and every time the transaction took well over 3 hours. The personnel at the counter seemed like retired cops or mostly retired individuals with very limited knowledge in the legality and purchasing rights of individuals. In one instance, a retired cop told a gentleman front of me that he couldn't get a paper copy of the forms that needed to be filled out to buy a firearm. As I stood there for my M9A3 and it was over 2:30 hours by then, I quickly Googled and was able to pull up the forms on line. Over all, the retired personnel behind the counter are extremely unproffessinal, unhelpful, unknowlegable and clearly there for the pay but not to provide any basis of customer service!! Store management and organizational leadership either wilfully blindness to the behaviors or just don't care enough about the service provided. Extremely disappointing. read more

There were way too many people here today. People were parking anywhere and everywhere. We lucked out getting a spot right near the door right away. This is the nicest Cabela's I have been too. They have a really large inventory here!!! Even boats! I Staff was super busy but everyone was friendly. Famous Dave's was giving out sample of their BBQ outside. There was a really cool mini house outside. We just looked today because the lines were long. Definitely the place to find everything for hunting, fishing, camping and more. read more

Today I went to this Cabela's in Gainesville, I went with a friend who is new to guns and wanted some advice and to handle some different firearms. It was noon on a Saturday so it was fairly busy, that said we only had a short wait until we were talking to a employee. We talked to Joe, he was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable, he was patient and took care to explain things to my friend who was new to guns, even though they were busy Joe didn't rush us or get distracted by other things going on. I tried to purchase a firearm at the Ashland store, months ago. Only after the hours long drive there did they tell me that my drivers license address has to match my current address. Cancelled order. Got drives license updated and ordered new firearm. Got email from Cabela's that my firearm was 'ready for pickup' at Gainsville store. After an hour long drive (without traffic), I got in line to pick up firearm. After several more hours, I completed federal fire arms form, and started state firearms form. After another hour I was told it would be an unknow time, and possibly a later date for this to go through. After another hour the gun counter was just empty, with no one to give me an update. I canceled the whole order, left, and will not go back. I am 0 or 2. They did nothing either time to help my order move through. Spend you good money elsewhere. read more

Great place. I've been here multiple times, and the staff is always very nice and efficient. I have not bought a gun here, as I'm 15, and I do not want to be a felon, but I do not know anyone that has had problems buying guns here. All I can speak on is the fishing stuff, and the candied almonds(YUM!). I get most of my fishing stuff from here and Walmart, but this place in my opinion is better. I do not have to go to multiple stores to find a product. Finally, let me talk about the candied almonds. They are incredible. Every time I come here I get at least one bad, and eat it very quickly. Of course, I can only eat this because I exercise everyday, because they probably have 500 grams of sugar per bag. However, it's definitely worth it. read more

My husband recently purchased a .22 cal S&W M&P 15 Sport rimfire. The gun was out of stock and had to be backordered. The folks in customer service were very helpful and completed the purchase within a few minutes. After that I never heard back from the store concerning my purchase. Three weeks later I call the customer service line to find out that S&W was not honoring the backorders and my order was cancelled. What was worse was had I called a day earlier they would have allow me to switch to another model. They had my email address but never heard a word - Terrible customer service. read more

Called today (the 18th...the day I was told it would arrive at the store) only to be told the order had been cancelled June 9th & no one told me!!! According to the Gainesville store, this is corporate policy...to not let people know when their ordered purchase is unavailable. I'm furious!!! Will never shop at Cabela's again! This store makes it easy to see why the worlds most foremost outfitter was bought out by basspro shops. I should've taken photos to post to show how out of stock they are on items. I went in to purchase some o2 Octane for an upcoming elk hunt. They have the majority of the camo either not out or do not stock it here. Come on Cabelas there was more Sitka brand out than your own camo. Next, I looked for a 36 sized waist in some Carhartt pants. They literally had 10 pairs of 40 size waist in both the grey and brown colors. On to fishing supplies next. Z Man finesse jig heads were not in stock in ANY size. A large selection of the soft plastics aren't in stock either. Heck, Walmart or Dicks would have more in stock. I did buy a pair of board shorts which I had to tell the girl are on sale on the website. She scanned them and said it should've had a sticker out. I thought yes if they'd like to sell any. Was told a bold face lie by an associate. Asked ROBINSON behind the firearms counter if they ever get 9mm ammo in the store because it's hard to find online. ROBINSON replies they never know when new shipments come in, when they do come in they don't know what's on the shipment and I should get to the store when they open at "10ish" for the best chance to get what I'm looking for. . I have a little retail experience (12 years) and there's no way they don't know what is on the shipping manifest nor an estimated delivery date. I wasn't expecting ROBINSON to look in the computer immediately but an honest answer would've been nice. There is NO WAY someone who works in the firearm section doesn't know something as elementary as the store hours. "10ish??" C'mon ROBINSON. I would hate to think the reason I was intentionally given the wrong info was because I don't represent the traditional customer that patronizes this establishment. That can't be the case can it?? Hmmmm. Guess what ROBINSON? I will be at the store before they open AT 9 AM, LOL, and wait my turn for my ammo just like everyone else. Came to pickup a firearm, that was in stock. Took good 20 minutes to flag down an associate to check on it. After another 20 minutes had to remind that person that i am still waiting for him to bring that gun so i can check it out. Came in at 12:00 left at 4pm. 7 people were in front of me for background check. Took me around 1,5 hours to get to the register. When you pickup your firearm they tell you that someone will call your name when background check is over. No they will not. Go get into the line and wait... After receiving a box with a firerarm, was told to keep it with red tape on top so cameras will see that i did not steal that gun. Really guys?! You'd better find better security in this case. Third, upon arriving home i was about to forget all the trouble i had to go through and wanted to inspect my new "toy". When i've opened the box it was no paperwork in it at all. No warranty info, no manual, nothing! Only gun. I would love to go back but i live 1 hour away! I like to keep everything together, so i called to the store, and told exactly what register i was at, who was my salesman and where did he leave those papers at. They told me that they will call me back. Next day i am calling and no one answers. Called like 10 times. Currently it is third day me calling to the store and no one simply answers the phone. Guys save sime time for yourself and dont go there unless you have too much time and want terrible service. read more

Went today to buy a Ruger handgun and picked #45 and the number up #85 which stayed up 1/2 hour and the customer knew exactly what he wanted. Gentlemen in line said he had been there for 2 1/2 hours and was still waiting to be called. Today was the day before Veterans Day. I went into Cabelas on a Monday afternoon. Not a busy place and lots of salespeople hanging around. However, they all seemed to do everything in their power to totally ignore me. I was looking at hiking shoes. I was in that department for a good 30 minutes and the salesperson walked nearby several times and never once looked my way. Salespeople in other departments walked by and ignored me. The boxes in the shoe department are TAPED SHUT meaning I couldn't even try something on myself even if I wanted to! I went to the camping department and purposely looked at merchandise, picking it up and moving it around and yet I was totally invisible to the salesperson standing a few feet away. I grabbed my husband and daughter from the gun department and my experience was repeated. After nearly an hour in the store, no one even glanced my way - I have never felt so invisible in my 60 years. We ended up going to a Dick's store in another town where I was greeted promptly, found exactly what I wanted and we were helped or spoken to by a half-dozen salespeople and I spent $185 and will spend more as that's the only place I'll go to from now on. read more

First time I went there sales personnel seemed to want to help and were fairly friendly and my main interests were in their reloading supplies, firearms accessories and their firearms. Now that they've been opened for awhile apparently upper management has forgotten about them as often happens when the novelty wears off, even though their reloading shelves may look stocked don't let that fool you the primary equipment is there, loading presses, dies, tumblers,etc. but for the perishable items powders, case length gauges and so forth the shelves are bare and what they do have is worthless second apparently these guys behind the gun counters don't know how to just help people sure calling out waiting numbers is a good idea when they're busy,but come on three or four people waiting for service have to continue waiting while the salesmen continue calling out the next number. As far as getting anybody to help you out on the floor forget it no one is around to help you and IF you can find someone you still have to wait while they try to find someone to help you.as far as their bargain cave some of the prices are somewhat reasonable such that should be on their regular store items thanks to this and their lack of knowledge I think they've seen the last of me and I them. Do have to add to my review, buddy of mine wanted to go check them out again, I went to check on a specific firearm, exact caliber, action, barrel length etcetera. After telling salesman exact details he didn't even bother to look on his rack but after an indefinite amount of time on their website he started telling me which other states had the carbine, I repeatedly had to tell him I wanted the rifle and the handgun caliber, plus I didn't want to drive to Texas, Maine or any other state. read more

I needed an air rifle ASAP and the other two guys that came out to help us (during covid 19 so wasn't allowed inside) were rude and not helpful at all someone sent out Stewart from the gun section I told him what was going on and he was amazing, completely helpful and figured out exactly what I needed. If you need help with guns of any type GO SEE STEWART!!! The one guy who was rude came back out (after Stewart had already taken our card and was inside to take care of everything) and said yeah I asked everyone in there and no one knows anything about bb or air guns. They offer in-store pick up and have a sign outside that says in-store pick-up but when we arrived at the store and called to pick up our order, the employee on the phone said they don't do in-store pick up. You would think they would have curbside pick-up like other stores are offering, but they don't offer that either. They want you in the store so you can see and buy more merchandise. I won't be back until they offer in-store or curbside pick-up. read more
