Cabela's Biometric Portable Gun Safe For the past two years, I have been trying to get assistance with this safe--IT IS UNRELIABLE. The reliability of this safe opening is not a guarantee. I have spoken to many at Cabela's Customer Service and each time, I have been walked through the process of getting the safe to remember my finger print. And, it was not until today that I was told by both Stacy and Carol at Heritage Safe that it only takes a picture of your finger print so you would need to store several finger prints in various positions. For the life of me, I cannot believe no one was notified of this issue, this is a real security problem. For the past week AGAIN, I called Cabela's Customer Service at 1-800-237-4444 and was told by a gentleman that he would have someone from Product Support to call me, well, that was a week ago. Called today and reached Denise who said she could not find a record of my calls but she would stay on the phone until someone from Product Support was on the line. Patricia from Product Support answered and after I explained the problem, she admitted that there was a problem with this safe and suggested that I contact Heritage Safe at 1-888-577-9823. I spoke to Stacy at Heritage Safe and she walked me through the process several times to no avail. Her attempt was to have me put my finger print on the safe in various positions. PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND WHY I WOULD BE COMFORTABLE WITH THIS IN A LIFE AND DEATH SITUATION? For the life of me, I am not sure why I am the only one realizing that in an emergency, you don't want a gun safe to not open or have the gun safe alarm to start blazing! Now that this is in writing, It has now become my goal to assure that anyone who reads this will know that this safe is not reliable and that they would be putting their life in jeopardy to continue using it as a gun safe (see video). I think it's bad when a store for fun / the outdoors sells products that are not only bad for the outdoors, but actually ignorant of local law. For example, the store sells felt sole waders. Those are the #1 cause of transporting invasive species and harming fish populations like SNP trout. In Maryland, they are illegal and have been since 2011. In Virginia, imported bottled deer urine for use as a hunting lure is causing CWD (basically mad cow disease). It's illegal in the state, yet the store also sells this. Now after the store has opened for a few years, we have a CWD issue locally. If you are here (Cabela's) to be a resource to outdoorsmen/women, respectively, protect the outdoors starting with what's on your shelf. read more

Cabelas lost two clients today, for good. I call the shop early, and ask the lady if they could appraise my weapon in the evening, and she says yes. We get there around 6:15, wait for at least 40 minutes. I ask a guy if we have to talk to someone specific for this; he goes to the back of the shop. He comes back saying that they are about to close and they could appraise it tomorrow. Mind you, we drove 34 minutes to get there just to be dismissed by these disrespectful, lazy fools. Love this place. As soon as you walk in it's like being inside a Toys 'R' Us for adults. I've been considering buying an outdoor grill for a while now and this place has some pretty cool selection, although the model I saw in their store a month or two back no longer seems to be available. Oh well. Anyway, here's everything I've loved so far: Friendly staff that greeted me at the door when I first entered and offered to help me out with anything I needed. Always nice. During these crazy times, ammo for all sorts of weapons has been in short supply. Thankfully I was able to find some 9MM JHP rounds from Sig Sauer available on the Cabela's website. They had a 'Ship to Store For Free' option which I went with. Picking it up from the store was a breeze. All I needed was proof of my purchase and my ID, I was in and out of customer service in like 60 seconds tops. Excellent service. Will be returning as rounds become more readily available from different companies as factories start re-opening. While I was there to pick up my online order I swung by the gun section. It was busy, and they had people taking a number and waiting to be called to the gun counter. If you waited this long to find something to defend yourself with I feel bad for you and wish you the best of luck. It certainly looks like they have some stuff in stock, however, so if you still need to find something right for you or your family I suggest stopping by. I saw they had some slugs for my 12 gauge on the shelf at a pretty good price so I picked up a couple boxes. Very nice find. I also picked up an ammo storage container and they had reduced the price on those from $15 to $12. My trip to Cabela's just kept getting better. And last but not least, I swung by the home goods section to browse their goods, and they had a few boxes of biscuit mix (jalapeno cheddar and bacon cheddar), so I figured I'd pick up a few to try them. They weren't the cheapest but, gosh darn it, those were some tasty biscuits! I will definitely be coming back for more in the near future. Thanks! read more

The gun counter was very busy, and I waited 1.5 hours to be served. But that is not the reason for my 1-star review. The reason for my 1-star review is that nobody seems to want to do anything to improve my experience. When asked how long I had waited (because I was visibly frustrated), the response was "Oh that's nothing!". When I asked if the people behind the gun counter had ever been asked what they think could be done to improve the flow of helping people, they said that they had never been asked that. When I offered suggestions on how flow might be improved during busy times, they immediately responded "That would never work". When I asked for the General Manager's email address to start a dialog, it was not given to me. I did talk to a few people: redacted, Gun Counter Associate, was kind and helpful, and showed empathy for my frustrations. redacted, the manager at Customer Service when I went up there, offered nothing but excuses, and blamed me for choosing to visit the store during the busy holiday season. When I countered that Amazon gets very busy too, yet they have figured out how to increase flow to meet demand, she responded, "But we aren't Amazon". That much is obvious. First and last time setting foot in Cabela's. Store was bright and shiny; but customer service on a Saturday afternoon was lacking. I was in the market for a folding knife and had narrowed my choices down to 2 specific models. Per Cabela's website both knives were in stock. Did not see either knife in the case, waited for 15 minutes to speak with an associate, he could not find them either despite checking on his computer and assuring me they were somewhere in the store. His only suggestion was to order online, when asked how long delivery would take his response was I dunno a few days. My response was to walk out the store, order knife online from Amazon for less money and have it delivered to my home in 2 business days. With brick and mortar stores having trouble keeping up with online retailers you would think Cabela's would be happy having a customer who's willing to spend money in the store. read more

A little torn. I was in the store right at closing time but wasn't trying to do a lot of shopping. Mostly mental lists of where things were so I could come back. I'm about an hour or so from home and my day didn't go as planned. The associate in the boating area was very helpful; however, the cashier may as well have told me GTFO as well as bitching about her manager while she was ringing me up (there were other customers checking out at the same time so I wasn't keeping anyone from leaving). I really don't know if I will make the trek out here again or go somewhere else even though I may pay a little more. Best advice I can give a shopper is as follows. The first employee that approaches you in regards to the club card take it. Just be polite and listen to there pitch. From this point on keep that club card brochure in your hand and noticable for the rest of your shopping experience. So when the next employee that approaches you which will be your next 50 steps or so, just wave your brochure and keep walking. I have always gone to get clothes, firearm accessories, and other items with no problem and the customer service have always been great. Now one day I had a very specific firearm-related inquiry, so this was the first time I actually needed to speak to the employees who work behind the counter. I take my number, I have 3 people ahead of me. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. After 1/2 an hour of standing around, I gave my number to someone else waiting and grumbling about the wait time. I specifically went shortly after they opened on a Saturday. It was NOT crowded. The problem is the gun counter employees were too few and nowhere to be seen. While the rest of Cabela's is excellent, I would STRONGLY suggest you go to a different store for firearm stuff. If molasses were a quantifiable unit of measurement for time, you can rate the service at the gun counter as slow as molasses...when they are even there. read more

I tried to purchase a firearm here on two separate occasions and honestly I'm extremely disappointed. I'd venture and say this is probably a great store for camping stuff but as far as guns are concerned I'd go elsewhere and I'm going to do just that. There seems to always be a long wait on the weekends, you need to grab a number like the DMV and wait for them to call you. Now I'm not going to go in details as to what happened in my case but I can 100% guarantee you that the in-store app they use on their ipads or PCs instead of the paper form 4473 is INACCURATE AND INCOMPLETE. Their staff is poorly trained and have zero idea how to handle anything besides an approval. It's borderline malicious when they start quoting fictional laws to customers. read more

Made the mistake of having a firearm transferred to this location. I purchased the firearm on line from another retailer and thought it would be convenient to pick it up at this location. Mistake. First time I went on a Wednesday early afternoon. I was No 3 in the queue. I waited an hour and never advanced. There were only 2 people running backgrounds. The people having their backgrounds checked were there when I got there and still there when I left an hour later. Came back a second time and was No 4 in the queue. Same thing. 2 people were buying firearms and an hour later they were still there. So far, I haven't seen anyone walk out with a completed purchase. Another guy came in after me (he would be No 5 in the queue) and he was told 2-3 hours wait time. Last time, I was first in line on a Sunday morning. I was in and out in less than 45 mins. The person was very familiar with the on line forms and was efficient. Their fee is a little expensive at $50 but they waive it if you buy $100 in merch. Won't be using them again. Plus, most of their firearms are overpriced. read more

I really enjoy having something closer than Bass Pro and paying for shipping online but I was very confused when I was shopping. Apart from it being crowded still I thought was very strange was they had men's clothing mixed in with women's. I was very confused as to where the women's shirts started and the men's started/ pants. Columbia has a lot of bright colored shirts and I love it, but as I was looking for boob darts or ladies cuts, I didn't see really see many. I'm not sure if they're going for a gender neutral theme? Purchased a revolver after driving from over an hour away. Paperwork wasn't processed correctly by junior varsity level staff. Request went to a delayed status. Drove back up there the following day after calling and being told to bring ID. I arrive and find out they processed the information under a pistol vice revolver. Again no attention to detail on their behalf. I am told I'll have to submit again. Because the employee again instructed me to drive up there with just my ID. Just a bunch of "shooting from the hip" that goes on their. I would hope that when you are processing paperwork for a data base it was correct. Not the case here. I will never go to Gainesville Cabelas again and will be sure to steer people to the Richmond store. read more

Terrible Service. I was sold a broken fishing pole. It was packaged so I did not know the kit was broken. I live almost 2 hours away so I had to mail the product back. I have called multiple times to address the return and have been given a different story with each call as to why the return has not been processed. Meh. If you're thinking this is going to be a mega store like the ones in the mid west, prepare to be disappointed. I would say this is like a "cabelas-lite". The clothing area is small. The jerky selection is non existent and there is no in store restaurant. I was kinda looking forward to having an elk sandwich. :-(. Tho there is a mini fudge place. One piece for $3.50. Merch is just ok. Cammo selection super small and kids clothes is pretty non existent. There is a selection of animals, but it's very small. I'm bummed that there was no animal statue out front. Horrible customer service. If you expect to purchase a firearm in any sort of fashion, might as well block out a whole day no matter how busy it is. Or better yet, buy it from somewhere else. The firearm we came to pickup was prepurchased online so we wouldn't have to deal with all the other people trying to buy guns. Didn't matter. Got stuck in the same line for people just there to look. Store was empty the entire time but somehow it still took an absurd amount of time. 2 hours later, still hadn't been called despite being told the wait was just shy of an hour. Plenty of employees walking around but no one had a straight answer and no one seemed to care that their customers are being ignored. You'd think that during a time of high gun sales they would bother to staff accordingly. After finally being called, was told that the ID we had and the paperwork, that is specifically mentioned in the email, was "not acceptable" per that employee. Refused to get manager. Absolute gargabe store. I've been to Cabela's at other locations and never had an issue even when the store was packed. This store will not be getting our business ever again. read more

I recently purchased some items and after a week of them sitting on my kitchen table decided to return them since I wasn't going to need them. I returned to the store with the unused and unopened items but didn't have the receipt. I most likely threw it out the second I pulled everything out of the bags. I informed customer service that although I didn't have the receipt, I did have the card it was purchased on. I was told they could no longer look up receipts using the card and that I couldn't have the money refunded onto the card, but could only get store credit. She told me it was a new policy. I find it ridiculous that in today's age of everything being on their computers, that they can't do this. I honestly haven't been to a single other large retailer who doesn't have the ability to just put it back on the card. I will simply find about outdoor retailer to give me business to. read more

Well I thought I was going to walk into a store with no customer service and high prices according to some of these reviews but my experience was quite the opposite of this. I came in for a new knife and a little air horn. I walked to the back and saw all the guns (ew) and immediately an employee walked over and asked if he could help. I told him I was looking for a new camping knife and he let me and the kids right to them. He talked to us a while about kinds/shapes/uses, ETC and we picked out one we thought was perfect. Another employee later saw us still walking around (it's a big store!) and I asked about the air horn. He walked us right over to them. Both of these guys were smiley, polite and helpful. As a matter of fact, even check out was smiley and nice. It was a great experience of customer service. I got the knife for $30 and the air horn for $9.99. Perfect! . I checked prices on a one person tent and it was half the cost of one at Dicks! Even online sales, Dicks one person tent is more expensive than Cabela's. I don't have any complaints for this store on my visit. I can't wait to find an excuse to come back. read more

Probably the worst and most confusing visit to the store. Looked in the area the item used to be, store has moved things as is normal, no biggie. Go to Customer Service expecting them to perhaps look up the location or tell me it's only available online. Nope, lady says follow me we can check with the guys in camping. Okay, start to follow her, she stops after three steps, points and says they are over there go ask them. Then she starts visiting with a female customer (?). Go all through camping, no guys there. Run into another lady that doesn't work camping, she at least locates a guy that works in camping. He says he doesn't think they carry the item, instead of looking or checking the inventory, goes back to folding shirts. Well, I went to Cabelas and bought a fishing pole holder. They had one with the base attached for $19.99. Without a base attached $16.99. They only has 2 with the base attached so I got them. The base separately is $4.99. I asked if I bought the base and put it on the holder could I get charged the $19.99 together. They manager said they couldn't do that. I didn't want to pay $16.99 plus $4.99. That would be more expensive. Anyway I had to pay separately which I didn't like. Oh well I know we're talking about a few dollars more but it's the principle. Wouldn't you want a happy customer then a disgruntled one. However the fishing knows his shit and hooked me up with what I wanted. read more

This newer location in Manassas was opened just prior to the merger with Bass Pro. Walking in, I was overwhelmed with the crowds and size of the store. They have a good selection of reloading supplies and ammo, but at premium prices. Their firearms selection on hand was a bit slim, but that may have been due to the upcoming Holiday season. The bad part was trying to check out with 2 or 3 non-firearm items. It took 45 minutes of waiting in line to finally be rung out, with long lines and delays caused by technical failures, and not all registers being open. I'll try going back in the off season, and see what it's like then. read more

I went to cabelas 2 times to buy a handgun. Both times I was put on a queue of about 30 people, only to find out my spot was taken after I showed up 2 minutes late to my spot. I waited 2 hours for all this to happen. You need to HIRE more people in the firearms department. Do NOT buy a gun from this store, unless you enjoy wasting half of your day standing in a line. Made my last purchase at this store. Unfortunately I had gift cards and used them on a firearm. I bought online and went in to process the transaction. It took them over 2 hours to get through 7 people in front of me. The folks working behind the counter were doing their best but their process is terrible. It took over 3 hours from when I walked until I left. This is a management problem, they don't pay the gun counter employees enough to attract more employees and they don't have enough staff. They could easily cross train more store employees to process transactions. I watched 3 or 4 customers cancel their orders because of the wait times. Store Management is the main part of the problem. A Manager apologized for the delay and tried to tell me that the wait times are soo long because they sell hundreds of guns a day. I explained to her that her numbers are way off. In three hours they only did 7 transactions, no way to make it to100 transactions at that rate much less hundreds. Then she tried to say it was because they didn't have enough laptops. Then she tried to say its because customers take a long time to look at multiple guns and that takes a long time. Every single person I saw there was trying to to do a background check on a previously purchased gun. A real gun store or a dealer at a gun show can process 7-10 times the transactions per hour that this place can. Do your self a favor and avoid buying a gun here if at all possible. read more

I recently bought a firearm on-line with Cabelas and waited to hear from Cabela's (Gainesville, VA) to let me know when the weapon was at the store so I could complete the purchase process for the sale. I never got a call or text from Cabela's and had to keep checking the the Cabela's web page to see if my order had come in to the store. After seven days, with no contact from Cabela's, I determined my weapon was at the store via the online page and yesterday, 18 November, went to the Gainesville store. Cabela's acts as if a customer is purchasing a nuclear device with the multi-step, time consuming process they have for completing the paperwork to legally obtain the firearm. First, you have to get a number (mind you I already bought the firearm) for seeing an employee (this took 50 minutes to get called to the counter) and then I had to be introduced to the man helping me, who then went through the paper work process with me. Then, the employee had to have another employee "double check" the 4473 form, which again proceeded with the speed of translating the Bible into the Chinese language. After the "double check" was finished, I had to have the background check done (I told the employee the check would take 1 minute or less and it actually took 25 seconds to clear me). Then, after getting my background check done, I was sent to ANOTHER counter to yet again wait for two employees to come over and for the second employee to "double check" the 4473 form again. Finally, I was asked about getting a credit card AND filling out some comment form, telling me the name of the woman who did the "double check" at the second counter I was sent to, as if I was supposed to be impressed by her performance in looking at a simple form. The entire process (granted this was a Sunday but keep in mind I already had bought the firearm) took 90 minutes to complete. The time I was at the counter doing the paperwork, at least two Cabelas employees walked up to the man helping me and complained about needing the bathroom and questioning why they came back to the gun counter to help people. Really? Bottom line is the process is too long, too many steps, and it flat out too slow for a customer as the process currently is done by this company. Cabela's s should have a separate area for completing purchases of on-line orders and not make them (especially in-state purchasers) part of the number of gun peepers who are roaming the counter space looking at firearms. Horrible experience and again, the multi step process seems to be created by Cableas legal people to avoid some level of liability, when the person buying the gun who may not tell the truth on the 4473 is the one responsible to ATF for correct information on the form. read more

I have always liked Cabelas, and this is no exception. I am only removing one star for the higher prices compared to the internet at times. Overall, this is a very clean and organized store, and the staff is very friendly. They have a good selection of everything, but sometimes stock is a bit low. This is especially true during the holiday season, but I guess in VA that is normal. I do wish the store was more open to accommodate shopping carts, as it gets cramped when crowded. All in all, it's a bit of a drive for me, but when I can make it out there, it is worth it. read more

Like most of my friends, I was excited to have a Cabela's coming to the area, and the first step into the store didn't dissapoint. It looked great. Unfortunately, the mistique wore off quickly. Every time I've been in, the customer service has been sufficiently lacking and the checkout process lengthy. Last night solidified my feeling about the store. I went to purchase a bow and some accessories, knowing exactly what I wanted. I picked up the bow and caught the eye of the sales person in the section, who was currently helping another customer. He said he'd be with me shortly and I indicated that would be fine. I just needed the various security devices removed and had a quick technical question, and didn't mind taking a few minutes to search the archery section and see what else I can't live without. I browsed with a friend while carrying the bow I planned to purchase. After 20 minutes, it was getting frustrating. The sales rep came out of the back room with the customer he was with, then started helping him browse accessories. Another 10 minutes went by and they were still at it, about 10 feet from where I was standing, and giving no indication that I would get assistance anytime soon. At the 30 minute mark, another sales rep showed up and started working with a customer who seemingly came out of nowhere. If there was another sales rep around, why couldn't the first one call him in to assist? I finally hung the bow back on the rack and walked out. There was no indication the saleperson cared, or even noticed, even though he was 10 feet away and facing my direction. It would have been an easy $500 sale. Based on the reviews, and stories from some of my friends, it doesn't seem like this is an isolated incident, which is really a shame. I can't imagine this store will last more than a year unless they fix these issues. If I had realized that Cabela's was so disinterested in helping customers, I would have just ordered on Amazon and saved a few bucks... which is what I'll be doing going forward. read more
