Having moved from Maryland to NoVA I sure do miss the Arundel Mills Bass Pro Shops. And there isn't a Bass Pro remotely close to me in NoVA (closest is the MD location) so I have to settle for Cabela's. Let's start with the good: I love that I can sell guns here and I've sold one before and felt I got a fair price. The guys behind the firearms counter are good an knowledgeable but depending on what time you go you could be waiting for what feels like an eternity to get served. This location is also rather small? Or maybe it's just because the inventory is a bit underwhelming for me, especially in the archery department. Idk every time I've been to Cabela's it feels like they don't have what I need unless I get it shipped. Yet when I've gone to Bass Pro in MD they always had what they need. Also there's been two instances where I ordered something online and despite this location having plenty in stock I've had to wait over 6 days for them to tell me my order was ready for pickup. At the Arundel Mills Bass Pro Shop if something was already in the store inventory and I ordered it in the morning itneluld be ready within 3-5 hours. read more

Prior to the new Virginia state law, made an on-line order for a new firearm, 5 days in advance, did not received at the store till the 1st of July ...TOO LATE ... was told sorry, nothing we can do about it but we can give you a discount on something that meets the new laws ... If I had known they were not able to meet the dead line, I would have gone else where that could have ... they charged my card, have yet to get credited back.. Didn't receive what I ordered and paid for, after July 1st item no longer available, and now I have to fight with Cabela's/ Bass Pro to get my money back .... totally f'd up Will not be going back anytime soon. read more

I usually love this location. However today at 4:35 my mother and I went to grab me new boots for work. There was plenty of staff on the floor but yet when I asked for help I was told no? Why are you paying for people to be on the floor then not do their job? Worst firearm buying experience ever, and I've been to many FFLs over the years. I will not be back. One employee checks you in, a second does your background check and then a third has to check it before submitting. Then after approval, you have to wait for the employee that started the background check, so you can checkout. I'm currently sitting here, approved over 45 mins ago and two employees have told me I need to wait for that employee to come back. I haven't seen him out on the floor in over an hour. Two and a half hours now and counting, but at least I have plenty of time to write this review as I wait. EDIT: The employee came out from the back over an hour later. He immediately started helping someone else, so I waved to him and told him that I had been approved an hour ago (59 minutes at that point to be exact - I had the text from VA state police) and he said anyone there could do the final checkout and he asked one of the other employees to check me out - It was the second person I had asked if they could check me out, 40 mins earlier. As she was finally checking me out a third person had to verify all the paperwork and the serial numbers on the firearms. I had already purchased the firearms online, so I only went to pick them up and do the background check and it took three hours (15 mins for the approval to come back). Every single other FFL I have been to over the last 20+ years, I was able to walk in, browse, make my selection, do the background check, wait for approval, and be out of there in an hour or less. read more

As everyone knows, the quality of Cabela's has plummeted since they were acquired by Bass Pro. It definitely seems like another case of a trusted brand being destroyed by private equity. One of the draws for Cabela's is their used gun room - the gun library. It's been closed the last 5-6 times I've gone there. I typically stop by in the middle of the day during the week to avoid crowds. I recently gave them a chance on a Saturday afternoon. It was still closed. Most gun stores make the biggest margins on selling used guns. I guess Cabela's must be different for whatever reason. But if they can't respect their customers enough to put a single person on staff to EVER open the used gun room, I don't see any reason to continue to shop there. I was going to buy a case of ammo but went home and ordered online from somewhere less expensive. Yes, all of the other complaints are valid. Badly overpriced. The quality of their clothing and other items has gotten much worse. The staff is really out of their league and clueless. The pride of working and shopping at Cabela's is gone. It's tough to say how long it will be before you see their going-out-of-business clearance sale. But as the joke for Gander Mountain went, get ready because they'll drop their prices to MSRP. read more

I went there to review a rifle sent in from a store in Chesterfield MI. The service was wonderful. The weapon was not a fit and the refund was painless. I didn't get the name of the sales person, very nice and Amber was a great help with the refund. I have no idea what was up with some of the bad reviews.Maybe not enough coffee? I will admit, based upon them I was a bit hesitant. I was happily not party to any untoward actions. People do have bad days, there might be a lack or staff on some days. I tried to buy a pistol at Cabela's on Sunday. I got there at 10:30 in the morning thinking it might not be busy that early on a Sunday. The parking lot was 1/3rd full already. When I got to the firearm counter there were a dozen other customers milling around. They had five employees behind the counter when I got there, four in green shirts and one in a tan shirt. I don't know if the color of their shirts had any significance but the two green shirts were standing with a customer who looked to be filling out his paperwork on a computer. One of the other green shirts was on a computer and when he finished I asked him if he was free and he said he was waiting on something but could help. I asked to see a pistol, he grabbed it from the case. I confirmed it was what I wanted and said I wanted to buy it. He told me to go check in at the iPad kiosk to get in line. I put my name in and I appeared on the screen as 11th in line. Not great but they have 5 guys so hopefully this won't take too long... Over the course of the next 20 minutes that one customer that they were helping was still filling out his forms and all of the other employees disappeared. Finally the one tan shirt came out, updated the queue and the list shifted down. He briefly talked to a customer that seemed to be next in line and then walked away. So it took them 20 minutes to help a single customer.At that rate it was going to take them 3 hours to get to me. I waited another 5 minutes and the tan shirt guy just wandered back and forth behind the counter, helping no one and none of the green shirts were to be found. I finally just left. Well I've been waiting for assistance and walking around for about 15 minutes now. I have been approached about an offer opportunity for a vacation from someone who doesn't work in the store. The shoe selection is poorly staffed and selection is poor for us tall gals. Once we found someone the first thing she said was 'I usually don't work in that area", and went into the employee section with the two pair of Keene shoes that I gave her. All of sudden another employee came out from the area and stated that there usually isn't anyone here needing anything. The employee that we found to assist us said that the only one that she found in my size in the store was NXIS and then couldn't find it on display. Walking into Cabela's is like stepping into the ultimate playground for anyone who loves the great outdoors--or just loves looking like they do. This place has EVERYTHING, and I mean everything. I went in for some fishing gear, and somehow walked out with a new camping stove, a flannel shirt I didn't know I needed, and the vague feeling that I should start hunting. The store is huge. If you can't find what you're looking for here, you might not actually need it. There are whole sections dedicated to camping, fishing, hunting, and even boating. Need a kayak? They've got that. Looking for camo gear? They've got more patterns than I knew existed. You could get lost in here (but hey, at least you'd be well-prepared to survive if you did). Staff? Super helpful and surprisingly non-judgmental when I asked where to find the coolest tackle box (yes, that's a thing). They seem to genuinely know their stuff, which is great when you have no idea what you're doing but still want to look like a pro. And let's not forget the taxidermy. I mean, the place is basically part outdoor store, part natural history museum. It's like they're saying, "Buy this gear and you too could one day have a deer head on your wall." If you're into anything outdoors--or just want to walk around and feel like a rugged adventurer--Cabela's is the place to be. Just make sure you have a budget... or don't. Until Cabela's gets their stuff together, I'm not pleased. As a former loyal customer, since being bought out by Bass Pro or vice versa, service has dropped significantly. A simple order for a firearm became a four month nightmare. They got it in a week and a half, yet couldn't find it. I understand and am patient, as they switched over to a new system, but this was similar to my grill purchase. My hope is they will make changes. Yes there was a supply shortage. Yet one thing that can stay adequate is communication and accountability. I am not pleased, and am less likely to go here first anymore. This store isn't all that anymore. Here we are 4 years later. I decided to try Cabelas 1 more time to try and buy a 9mm. On Wednesday, I went to the counter and got a number according to the number I was number 16 lol time was 12:06 when I got the number. I waited and waited and waited and waited finally after a hour I left. Welll around 2:55 almost 3 hours later they called my number by then I had long left and was at Clarks gun range lmao. And they are just now calling me.. they seriously need to hire more so they miss out on a boat see previous review now a gun that I was buying.. losing lot of money so far. This is probably the worst sporting goods store I've ever encountered. First, it took nearly 1.75hours to meet with at an "outfitter" at the gun bar after signing in at their iPad check-in. That should have been the first clue these guys didn't know their r1ect2um from a shotgun choke. Then, the manager took over 1-HOUR! to check me out. The guy didn't know the difference between a slug and a carbine. Idiot. Worst gun buying experience of my life!!!!!!!!-the foreigner manager and yokels at the gun counter know less than a box of .22 magnum. It's a good source of ammo but forget about buying a gun here unless you have other choices. I am reluctant to give it a better rating due to some frustrating experiences. On one occasion, I was made to wait for a gun salesman to train another doing a sale for an unreasonable amount of time. Why doesn't this happen during off hours, not during the open hours? On another, I was given a lowball figure on a rifle I wanted to sell when the same gun was sold for hundreds of dollars more. I was given the excuse, "That's what another company employee offered the customer." Offering logical arguments to some of these employees will get you nowhere. read more

Tried to purchase an optic for my pistol. Emphasize "tried". We told one of the gun counter mental giants that I wanted to purchase an optic. The response " well, .....(stutter, fumble, gaze incoherently). Someone will have to escort you to the front. This in itself is ridiculous for a non weapon purchase. Of course I said ok, no problem. I can wait. The Burger King dropout then called for help. How do you not know what you're doing when working a gun counter? Then.....nothing. No help. The fantasy escorter never showed. I waited and waited. Then, I left. I'm not sure who mismanages this place or who hires the ultra intelligent gun counter employees, but they need a new position. This store is not close to us which is a bummer because it was amazing. Clothes were great and well Priced and so were the shoes, waders and all foot wear. We found a great selection of ammo and the staff was super helpful and nice. This is an outdoorsman's playground. Check it out. You definitely spend more time there than you scheduled. I am not sure about purchasing a firearm except they seemed busy ( usually great places are busy, so schedule a time if possible) and they are very thorough. The store has a great selection of gear for the outdoors man and woman and the staff is helpful and friendly it seems in all the areas except the gun counter. The wait times are super long up to 4 hours depending when you walk in and seek help at the gun counter. The employees that work the counter are basically helping one customer each per hour and they have 3 to 4 employees. The employees will assist you if you are purchasing a firearm and walk you over to the check out to finish the paperwork and get approval but it's after this that everything becomes questionable with the employees. They basically get you checked out and then disappear through the door in the back left corner and don't return to the counter for 45 minutes to an hour. It's like the policy is to help one customer for X amount of time and then disappear for an hour. It is minding numbingly painful. I was in on back to back days and waited 2.5 hours with no help on the first day and the second day I waited for 3.5 hours and was told I had to come back as my paperwork was waiting approval. If going to the gun counter I would recommend going as soon as they open and if you don't prepare to wait up to four hours or more for assistance in the gun department. I can't say if I will ever purchase from there again. read more

Was at Cabela's today to pick up a transfer from another store I already paid for. Had to wait in queue for 2 hours, note that I was in the number four position for about an hour. I'm not sure where all their employees disappear off too but they come out talk to a few people and then head to the back to hang out. As we were waiting one of the reps ended up helping one of their very own staff members that got off work and wanted to buy a firearm. He skipped from 5th place in queue to first, the other customer with me was super confused. I will say that Chris O. Really did make the experience at least a little bit better as he was very helpful. We were able to get my background through and the fire arm in my hand after 4 long hours of wasting my time. I can't recommend using this place as an FFL or buying anything firearm related here as it would literally just waste your entire day. read more

That changed recently with the opening of a Cabela's in the Virginia Gateway retail complex in Gainesville, VA! First time here must I saw wow this place is beautiful. I see a bunch of kids and animals which is nice place to enjoy a view with great company. They have tables chairs every where so you can find a spot. They also have a fire near to hang around and keep you warm. The food was excellent also with the ipas. Definitely nice family spot or just even a hangout spot to go with your friends. The sunset is great out there so mesmerizing I definitely can't wait to come here again and share with other. DO NOT GO TO CABELA'S GAINESVILLE, VA, READ NOT JUST THIS BUT OTHER REVIEWS TOO. THIS STORE IS GOING DOWN! Extremely poor service from the Services department! I bought a Pontoon boat from them, yes, a brand-new boat! In less than 2 months the starter battery was dead. I took it to the closest "Advanced Auto Parts" store, and they checked, then even charged it for FREE. After their turbo charge, they show me the battery is just dead, can't even hold the charges (Great service). My boat is kept at a Marina, more than 1 hour drive from the Cabela, Gainesville, VA where I bought the boat from. So, I took just the battery to that store, and the service person recognized that I had bought a boat from them. As soon as I told him about the battery being dead, without asking anything, he offered to sell me another battery and he has it stocked. I told him it should have a warranty, it's less than 2 months old. So, his face changed right away from a service person to a debtor, now he has to find the manager, keep calling him. After 15/20 minutes later, service manager "Travis or Tristan" comes and tells me "It might have some warranty left" - yes after buying a boat in less than 2 minutes, he "thinks" the battery might have some warranty left. I have the battery and all the paperwork with me, but he didn't want to see anything. He kept saying, I will have to make an appointment to have the battery checked, but he doesn't know when someone will be available - they will call me. More messed up he said I will have to bring the boat with me to check the battery. Yes, keywords are 1) I will have to haul the boat for more than an hour so they can check the battery and 2) They don't even know when someone will be available, and 3) He thinks there might be some kind of warranty left (I have the paperwork with me). This CLEARLY shows how they are trying to just get rid of me and cheat on the warranty work. I walked out eventually and bought a new battery from Walmart and the boat is working fine. They knew I would not be hauling the boat for more than 1 hour each way to have the battery checked, even though they couldn't give me an appointment to check the battery. So, it is a super way to cheat. Yes, they lost me as a customer for good. Not just boats, me and my friends and family have spent 10s thousands of $$$ for hunting and fishing gear / guns / ammo etc. It ALL STOPPED now. They have lost a bunch of customers to have $100 on the battery in the wrong way. I even emailed the sales manager, Kimberly Barker for the store manager's contacts, but she never responded. It's great to have an option like Cabela's in the area. The closest Bass Pro Shop is almost in Richmond so this place is much closer. There is so much going on in here but my focus on this first visit was to check out their selection of work boots and hiking shoes. They have several selections for steel and composite toe work boots that are Electrical Hazard rated. They have Keen, Wolverine and the Cabela brand. All fairly completely priced I thought and some great selections and styles. They also have a great selection of hiking boots with many different models of Merrell, Keen and their own brand. I also wanted to check out their hand guns, Wow! This place has the selection and price which is hard to beat. The staff was friendly and knowledgable and overall it was a good experience. read more

I was looking for a new CC handgun and became interesting in Kimber. Saw an ad online that the Cabela's near me was offering a stainless Kimber Micro 9 at a decent price so I decided to check it out. I doubted they would have it in stock but if I could look at it or at something similar in size and grip I was going to go ahead and spend the money and have them order me one. I was a slam dunk sale and all they had to do was take my money. I fought through an hour of Northern Virginia traffic to get there. It was a smaller store than the Cabela's and Bass Pro stores I'd shopped before. The gun section was large and roomy even through a lot of the firearms and ammunition was sold out. I saw a Kimber under the glass that was similar to the one I wanted so I thought I had a shot at a purchase. There was one guy behind the extensive counter and he was helping a guy but the store wasn't busy. I saw a sign saying customers had to check in at a counter near the "mountain" so I did that. The guy signed me in and took my number to text me when it was my turn. He said it might take half an hour to get my turn at the counter with the gun guy. That didn't make sense to me but okay. They had employees all over the place but that's the way they want to run their business I can handle it. I wandered around the store for half an hour, saw nothing interesting. Went back to the gun section and I now I see no one behind the gun counter at all. I go back to the check-in guy and asked about my status. He said there were still two guys ahead of me but he guaranteed they would get to me today. At this point I realized they weren't going to take my money so I gave up and left. An hour after leaving the store and heading home I got a text telling me it was my turn. The place hates customers and the whole shopping trip was a waste of time and a bad experience. read more

A large amount of employees and patrons were not wearing masks, which goes directly against the VA governor's orders. What's even worse is that the store has signage about 6 feet social distancing and plexiglass barriers, but very few were abiding to these protocols.
