As a budding gun enthusiast and someone who's new to shooting (2 years in), I've been looking for places to get target practice in and to improve my skills. XCAL is the nicest gun range I've ever been to! The facility is only a couple years old, so everything is still shiny and new. I arrived here on a Tuesday late afternoon around 4ish and there was already a line. Seems like a popular place, so get here early if you want to avoid lines! While I was waiting, I checked out their retail area. The counter staff was very knowledgeable about all the guns I asked about and had helpful suggestions on other options that they though I would like. When my lane was ready, they called my name on the intercom. The staff who helped check me in was also super friendly and asked me how my day was. I told her it was my birthday! She threw in a free target with balloons on it! I asked to rent a PCC and full automatic glock with a couple boxes of ammo. They said the glock rental was on the house for my birthday! Sweet! Normally full automatic glock rentals are about $85. I ended up paying for the PCC rental, a couple boxes of ammo, plus eye and ear protection (about $109 in total. this included ear/eye protection for my wife who joined me in the range). The full automatic glock was incredibly fun to shoot! I felt like I was in a John Wick movie! I highly recommend trying it out. The range staff took all the helpful safety precautions on site, including for this particular gun. A range safety officer was required to be next to me to use the full auto, and loaded the magazine for me. For the PCC, I was able to load it myself. Best range experience I've ever had! The facilities were state of the art and all the staff were so helpful.

They also grouped lanes by like clusters of 3 then door(s) to the next set of rows - I assume it helps sound compared to a whole open space. I think it's a decent price for what you're getting (service/facilities). We did have like 4 people share a lane since they didn't have more open so the amount of shooting time was limited per person. They had a chair or bench in the room so we could put our cases and equipment down.

As an avid clay target shooter, finding a place to go (besides my gun club) was important, since my club doesn't have a Sporting Clays facility. A few people told me about Bull Run, and I visited for the first time back in October. I was impressed with the facilities. The county government runs the spot, and it is nice and clean! Pricing is fair. If you don't have a gun, you can rent one for an additional fee. If you need shells or bring shells that violate the rules of the range, there are boxes of shells you can buy on the premises. The one drawback I personally had thag doesn't directly affect me is if you bring someone who's never shot before, they will be required to do a mandatory safety course. The course isn't terrible, and my friend who has to do the safety course said it was very insightful. But if you don't have to do the course, but a friend does, you're gonna be waiting a hot minute before you guys can shoot together. Nevertheless, as someone certified as both a shotgun firearms instructor and an RSO, I value their commitment to ensuring everyone at Bull Run is safe.

Especially since the pistol and rifle ranges at my club are outdoors, it's convenient to come here when it's super windy or super rainy. You don't have to be an NRA member to shoot here, but you do get a discount. Also, there are no gun rentals at this range -- if you wanna shoot, bring your own firearms. They also have range rules on what ammo you can shoot, and they will check your ammo before they assign you a range. Thankfully, they have ammo for sale if your ammo isn't shootable at the range, and/or you forgot your ammo. If it's your first time coming to the range, you will be required to take a range safety test (if you're an average shooter with common sense, it's nearly impossible to fail unless you're intentionally trying to fail). Once you pass, you get a range card that you have to pay for, but once you buy it, you never have to pay again (unless you misplace it). Also, ladies: I recommend coming out on Thursday night! Not only do you get a discount on your range reservation, but you also get a free range card on your first visit! All in all, the NRA HQ range is great. As long as you follow the rules, it is not a bad place to shoot.

Vendors sell tasers, knives, holster, all sorts of bags to carry weapons and ammo... they even have high end first aid kits. Lots and lots of body armor and old military gear and clothing is sold here too. You can do transfers to DC & Maryland and apply for concealed carry permits. Some vendors also offer weapons handling and self defense training courses Not a bad entry fee... and they offer a military/veteran discount.

There's no clear communication, no accountability, and no sense that anyone at the top actually has control of what's happening day to day. Mistakes keep stacking up, problems go unresolved, and instead of fixing the root issues, everything feels reactive and sloppy. People are left guessing, cleaning up messes that shouldn't exist in the first place, and dealing with unnecessary stress because leadership refuses to adapt or acknowledge how bad things have gotten. When the same problems keep repeating, that's not bad luck that's bad management. Running something like this requires energy, organization, and the ability to evolve. Right now, none of that is showing. The result is a mess that reflects poorly on everyone involved and wastes time, money, and patience. At some point, self-awareness matters. If you're no longer able or willing to run things competently, the responsible move isn't to dig in harder it's to step aside. Honestly, it might be time to seriously consider retiring and letting someone else take over who actually has the drive, clarity, and capability to run things properly. Because what's happening now isn't sustainable, and pretending everything is fine just makes the collapse louder and more embarrassing when it finally hits.
