Tryed to go to El Navarro's 1 hour wait ! So we went to Caballo Blanco , walked in no wait sit where ever you want we were told. Nice staff ! The waitress asked if we wanted to order drinks . 2 seconds later we were asked to order? I said we Justed sat down , I ordered Asada plate . My husband ordered carnitas plate . The carnitas was good! My asada was no good!! The meat was very chewy! I thought I was going to choke on the fat ! The chips were good flour tortillas! Again employees were friendly! REALLY GREAT EATS ! It's not fancy by any means but here you will find a great Mexican menu and greatest chips ever ! Home baked tortilla chips are crisp and soft at same time delectable! Really good Chile Relleno! Guacamole Enchilada is scrumptious, I would say the Food is Authentic and 5 star and they serve you really nice cup of tasty Mexican Vegetable soup with most meals, the only caveat is to not earning overall 5 star review it's a bit dark in the interior dining area but do not let that deter you if you want a great meal ! How do you want to be treated when you come into a restaurant? The Caballo Blanco was the epitome of customer service. I'm not sure if it was early, slow or if the ladies there were just that friendly but the wife and I enjoyed a wonderful feeling of friendliness from the three women who checked on us throughout the meal. Oh yeah and then there was food! We enjoyed the warmed tortillas, the plates they brought out, even the Modelo felt better in this place. Maybe our new favorite spot. read more

The first time we came to this restaurant we were really impressed. We received a small bowl of soup that was delicious and the waitresses were very kind. The atmosphere was great. We came back a second time and were treated with no attention or care. The waiter took our order and brought our food and that was the end of that. The beans looked as if they had been sitting out all day. I had the shrimp and it had no flavor and was very bland. Also,we received no small bowl of soup which I truly was expecting. I thought things would have been consistent but obviously not. My husband had beef enchiladas which he said were okay. If this is how things are, I don't think we will come back. I've been going o Caballo Blanco for my entire life and I never leave hungry. It's family ran and if you go enough they'll remember you by you 1st name haha. I am a huge fan of their crispy beef taco. not very traditional as its served in a hard shell but very addicting. If you dine in a fair warning, they serve these homemade chips that are super thick and addicting and you'll eat them unconsciously before your main course comes out and bell full. they also serve a vegetable soup, let it cool off because you'll burn your tongue... sigh. Portions come large and you'll be able to take leftovers home to enjoy later. I don't recall a time I left there unsatisfied. Sacramento has such a large competitive Mexican food scene and there's so many options to choose from. Caballo Blanco is going to blow your mind or anything. its simple and effective. the staff and owners will make you feel like you're eating in someones home which kind of keeps me coming back. read more

I was pretty disappointed from the other reviews. Yeah, the chips are really light and crispy. Very good. That was about it. I found the other food to be very bland. Their wait staff was nice, nothing wrong with the atmosphere. The chairs are really cool, they have some good things going for them. We had a part of 6 and none of us finished our food. It wasn't horrible, just not good. There weren't any lime flavors, garlic, cilantro. The salsa is unique with a smoky chipotle flavor and the plates are presented well. I probably wouldn't eat here again, I might try the taqueria across the street instead . read more

I went with a friend for an early lunch today, and although it was a cold and cloudy day, the deciduous food warmed us right up. They have the option for To-Go or sitting at the outdoor patio, and we chose to sit outside. The waitresses that helped us today were so sweet and super accommodating, the service was impeccable! The in house made chips as an appetizer were amazing, seriously the best chips I've ever had! Super crispy and flaky and melt in your mouth type of chips, and paired amazingly well with the salsa!! I ordered the three enchiladas (chicken, cheese, and beef), and I highly recommend trying the chicken and cheese enchiladas! We also ordered hot chocolates with whipped cream which was super comforting with the cold weather. Overall such a great experience, my friend and I are huge fans! read more

I never thought I'd be here, writing my 200th review...here goes nothin'! Caballo. Blanco. Two words I dreaded as a kid...and somewhat still do to this day. However, this place is a legacy, 33 years in the making, so I truly cannot rate it anything more than what I am going to right now. 33 years ago my parents had their first date here. Still married, two kids, and going strong. CB's carnitas must have sealed the deal, cause they are still together. No matter how many times I've been told this is where their first date was, as a kid I always forgot, and complained about going here. Don't get me wrong, I love Mexican food...but this place is on a seedy corner and just is so random. I don't know how much I trust a place where you enter in the back...of the restaurant ;) I generally order the Carnitas, but because that was off limits due to Lent & Veggie week, I went with the veggie quesadilla. I was pleasantly surprised, not as good as the Navajo quesadilla at Ernesto's, but a good runner up. A suggestion, would be to season their grilled veggies. I loved that it was not over saturated in cheese, but a good ratio of cheese and veggies to tortilla. I will give them the fact that they aren't stingy. Their portions are HUGE. Average in tasting in price. I don't understand how it's possible to be out of carnitas, but they were. The birthday boy, Pops, was not very happy. Carnitas are the way to our families heart. One of us will always order some form of it in one way or another... Their service has always been spotty. No matter the time or the day, they aren't really stellar customer service providers. Not really sure the reason, but sometimes they lack enthusiasm or they just don't care what's going on. Just know, you get what you get and don't hope for much better when you get seated. What a milestone for Caballo Blanco...50 years in business! How many Sacramento restaurants can claim that? Used to come here all the time when I was young (ah...the glorious Valley High School daze) and it's still one of my most adored places. Yeah, the service used to be grumpy a lot of the time, but I'd probably be grumpy too if I worked at Franklin & Fruitridge. This was the first time I'd been by in a couple of years and they've made a few impressive improvements. First off, that service was gracious and friendly. Second, they've upgraded the salsa. It was always a mystery to me how they could accompany the best chips in town (they're flour!!) with some of the worst salsa. Guess I wasn't the only one because the new stuff is perfectly spiced and yummy. On to my favorite part- Carne Seca. It's a stew made up of slightly crispy carnitas, simmered with tomatoes, bell peppers and onion in a savory base. Absolute bliss wrapped up in one of their homemade tortillas. This definitely makes it into my top 5 dishes in Sactown, right up there with the meatball sandwich from Sampinos and the pork chop from Mulvaneys. The BF ordered a mondo platter piled high with shrimp in garlic sauce and a butterflied chicken breast. The camarones were huge, but overcooked a bit. Chicken breast was tasty, but both paled in comparison to the pork dishes I've had here. Cheese enchilada was a winner. Big time bonus points from me. A complimentary cup of vegie soup comes as a starter. It's a little on the bland side, but hey, it's hot and it's free, so no complaining :) I've always loved their wooden booths and comfy Mexican kitsch. I have been to Caballo Blanco several times now and each time, I've left completely stuffed and very happy. The restaurant is very warm and nicely furnished/decorated. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. They gladly answer questions about the menu, quickly give you fresh chips and salsa, and often refill your water or soda. My boyfriend and I always order one dinner entree and we share it. The employees don't mind that we share and it works for us, because the portions are very generous. Our usual is the garlic shrimp, but we've also ordered a la cart items before, and they're all good. Highlighting the garlic shrimp dinner ($13.95), you get: Soup: it tastes like minestrone. I like it. It warms me up and is very flavorful. Flour or corn tortillas: We always get flour and we've never been disappointed. They give you 3, but I'm sure you could get more if you needed them. These tortillas make some delicious tacos. Salad: I usually don't go to a Mexican restaurant to eat salad, but this salad is surprisingly good. It has a unique dressing, which is actually pretty good. Beans: topped with cheese and nicely cooked; they provide a delicious first layer to the tacos my boyfriend and I make with the shrimp dinner. Rice: Full of flavor, not dry at all (which is sometimes the case with other restaurants). Shrimp: always hot, plump, and flavorful. The dish usually has about 10 shrimp and it's plenty for my boyfriend and I to share. The shrimp are good-sized and delicious. Overall, the food is consistent and very tasty; it always comes out hot and freshly made. If you've never been to Caballo Blanco, you should give it a try, because they have very good, home-made chips. They are very light and flaky, while still having a nice crunch to them. I love the chips, and I can't imagine them any tastier than this. If I'm in South Sacramento this is where I'm going to stop and eat. The flour tortilla chips bring me in-and when I'm really weak I get a bag of the chips to-go. The salsa is fairly hot and it's the perfect companion to the tasty chips. Carnitas...that's my favorite no matter where I dine, and it's a meat option in practically every dish they offer. The prices for the full meal start at $11, and includes soup, rice, beans, and the entree you select. It will fill you up and after you eat it all you'll be stuffed for the remainder of the day. Three words: FRIED FLOUR CHIPS. Most of the time when I order a taco salad, I just want the damn shell. Thank you, Caballo Blanco, for saving me the hassle. There was a large party in the middle of our dining room and I was cracking up at the fact that there are still elderly people in the world today who have never heard of or seen guacamole. The actual conversation went like this: Middle-Aged Lady(With a thick enter-your-own-hillbilly-state here accent): Mom. Mom. MOM. You want some of this guacamole? Old Lady: Guacamole? MAL: Yeah (shows her the bowl). OL: Hmmm...I don't know...what is it? MAL: It's avocados. OL: Avocados? I like avocados! Okay. I mean, seriously? No wonder the token Indian girl (no clue why she was sitting with them) was typing away on her iPod the whole time. Anyway... Pretty good enchiladas. I'm not sure where the bad reviews are coming from with regards to the kitchen not being able to "mix it up" for you, but I ordered two chicken and one cheese enchilada in my combo with no problem whatsoever. I really disliked the taste of pork fat their chips had. I've also never been to a restaurant that charged for any subsequent refills of chips and salsa. The quesadillas were okay even though I could taste more pork fat on them too. I tried my sister's plate of Camarones a La Diabla and wasn't impressed. The worst part was the beans in my Macho Nachos which tasted like the old refried beans that come in a can with dried cheese that looked like it had been microwaved to get it to melt. This place is amazing! I was introduced to Caballo Blanco a few years ago by a long time Sacramento native whose family has been eating here for years. I've eaten here many times in person, and now during COVID getting delivery. The food quality is consistent, still just as good getting delivery as in person and they get a bonus for not using foam packaging. I've really enjoyed their chicken tacos and enchilada meals. The only saving grace to this place are the fried tortilla chips that everyone talks about. It was so good -- and my expectations were so high because of the tortilla chips -- that when my chile relleno arrived, it flopped BIG TIME! It was the worst chile relleno ever -- Jimboy's makes a better chile relleno! The chile doesn't even come whole and is sliced up in strips, over-drenched in the egg batter that by the time I cut into the relleno, all there was to it was glops of egg batter and not enough cheese or chilis. This is not called an egg batter relleno but a "chile" relleno. I didn't try the soup since it wasn't vegetarian, the rice was meh, and the refried beans were mediocre. One of my all time favorites in the Sacramento area for authentic Mexican cuisine. The flour chips and salsa appetizers are the best. I'm hung up on the three item (taco, enchilada, burrito) combination plate which is probably more food than many care to eat, but what a great value. The chicken and beef is tender and fat free and the sauces are flavored to perfection. Albondigas soup comes with each meal in addition to the small salad, rice, and beans. The service has always been excellent and the food delivered piping hot and fresh. Great value and I can't imagine anyone leaving without being completely full and satisfied. Nice atmosphere inside and very pleasant servers. Very extensive menu that includes several authentic fish dishes. 2011 is their 50th year in business, they know how to keep customers satisfied. read more

3.5 star experience at this restaurant. The attentiveness from the servers was a bit lacking. Friendly employees, however after our food was delivered, our server rarely checked on us. It took awhile until I was able to ask our waiter for a refill on my water, and after we got our check, the waiter never came back to collect our cash and give us change. My boyfriend had to get up from our booth and get the change. On a positive note, the food was good and it satisfied my Mexican food cravings. Great food, very generous and nice. Our order was wrong after it was taken twice. They did everything to fix it. The chips are made with flour, which is unique. Between me and my conspirator, we have visited this place over 5 times. I had the enchilada with rice and beans. Which was great, I just wished the rice was next to the beans(Lol, just me being picky). My conspirator had the Chile Verde, Caldo de Rez, and the enchiladas. They are always friendly and make you feel at home. Food is awesome and even though they have the regular fair they go outside the box and have a liberal amount of special items that you only see at authentic Mexican restaurants. The soup is included with the meals and is a simple but very flavorful vegetable. Their chips are made fresh from flour tortillas and is served with a fantastic salsa which stands on its own as one of my favorites. Three stars....I know, I know, everyone is giving it more, but I will explain. First off, the food. The initial chips they served, while complimentary, tasted "different." I have been too many Mexican restaurants throughout my day (some authentic, a lot Americanized), and this is my first version of these type of chips. They essentially tasted like doughy Chinese Wontons......didn't really care for the taste and texture. It just seemed too much like a Chinese bowl of complimentary wonton pieces. The soup was good, but it felt weird to have a Mexican broth with Noodles in it and about three little pieces of celery. While I apology that I am sounding nitpicky, it just seems that the first few tastes were, um......we'll go with "different." The actual main course was quite good.....well, the pork was. It was not dry at all, and I enjoyed the avocado salad they served with the rice and beans to mix in with the tortillas. The cheese in the beans could have been melted more. Again, nitpickyness, and all that crap....but it seems the basic tastes we have come to know and love were not mastered. The service was polite, but sometimes nonexistent. It took repeated requests for a simple soda refill, and considering how salty this meal was, we had to wait before taking another bite.
