This was the best food I've had. Hands down. As a vegetarian, whenever I go someplace i worry about food options but they had lots of options and marked them as well! I got an impossible burger and oh my god it was delicious. The best I've ever had. My dad almost cried having the Mac and chees. My sister sad her chicken sandwich was one of her favorites she ever had. My mom and grandma got the caeser with shrimp and thought it was delicious. We also got the pimento cheese dip and it was warm and gooey and delicious and the chips that came with it were perfectly seasoned. Our fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. it was my dads birthday and he got the peach cobbler and said it was the best he's ever had. Out waiter was kind enough to bring candles which was so sweet of her! My sister, grandma, and I shared the red velvet cake and it was amazing. You could taste the history and personality of every dish. I have never tasted such great food. we sat on the patio and it was so gorgeous. They had a plaque about the green book and the history of the time period and what it was. My history loving family found that super cool. The atmosphere inside was great. The artwork was beautifu. Also he service was impeccabl. Our server, isis, was incredibly kind and helpfu. The service was speedy which is great bc my grandma was tired and usually had dinner at four (it was 7). However we still had enough time between appetizers, the meal, and dessert. Overall my family and I will be going back and I think we found our new favorite restauran. So today we had a group of 21 ladies taking up 2 long tables for lunch at Fixins for lunch. We were celebrating being in community and sharing love with one another. This was my very 1st time there and can I just say that our server Terri was on point from the very beginning. She introduced herself with a smile, took great care of all 21 of us with ease and patience, and just lovely! But here's the kicker! I was super impressed at the fact that literally after the 2nd table which had 8 of us seated, (1st table had 13) finished giving our orders to Terri, the 1st table was already receiving their food! 5 minutes hadn't even gone by! It was so incredibly fast and the food was hot and delicious ( I know because I sampled some of it)! I mean I have never been to a restaurant where the food comes out that fast and that delicious! And something else that was impressive was there was 1 issue with a meal at my table where the meat wasn't cooked all the way so the young lady wanted to send it back. Restaurant Manager Billy Whitaker (A.K.A. - BJ) came out, introduced himself, apologized and offered up a brand new order of everything! He was very professional! The entire experience from start to finish at Fixins today was so incredible that it really warmed my heart in such a way that I pulled Billy aside to give him praise for the great job and to make him aware of the excellent service provided to us by his staff as well! I wish I could remember what he told me he learned from his family member that he carries with him. I know he definitely carries it out and shares with his staff and it shows because I am here broadcasting and I normally don't give reviews but this is one worth sharing because it was really that good and praise worthy! Just wow! Everything was so good! The drinks, the food, and the service were amazing. I tried oxtail for the first time and it was so juicy and tender that it was falling off the bone! The collard greens were delicious and had a bit of a sweetness to it. The drinks were fun and unique. The peach cobbler was good, but I wish it had a lot more of the crunch. There's seating inside, at the bar, and outside on the patio. They have misters and shade for when it's hot, and heaters for when it's cold outside. Plenty of TVs at the bar. Decent amount of seating in the dining area. The staff were friendly and chill. The service was surprisingly very fast compared to other BBQ spots. My one complaint is that it can be pretty loud in there. There are a lot of children (from babies to teenagers) who like to run around or just talk loudly, so if you want a quiet place, I guess try to figure out what time is the least busy. Founded in 2019 by former NBA star and Sacramento's first Black mayor, Kevin Johnson, this restaurant combines Southern comfort food with a strong sense of Black history and culture. It comes with a biscuit, and you can choose from their selection of Southern-style "Fixin's" (side dishes). *Gumbo Chicken and sausage stew served over rice with cornbread. Hearty and comforting. *Shrimp & Grits Shrimp, onions, peppers, and tomatoes simmered in a beer brown gravy and served over creamy grits. *Fried Fish Cornmeal-crusted fish served with corn fritters and your choice of two Fixin's. Chicken & waffles 10/10 the chicken is extra crispy, juicy and the flavor goes all the way through the chicken not just the skin. Biscuits and grape jelly butter 10/10, these are the biscuits you want! They were flaky and hot to order. Fried green tomatoes 8/10, though they were good the slices were pretty small. For months, my girl and I had been talking about trying Fixins. Since it isn't too far from her house, we finally decided to check it out for Sunday brunch. The first thing to know is parking. Fixins doesn't have its own parking lot, so you'll need to find street parking nearby. We got lucky and found a spot close to the restaurant. Since it was Sunday, it was fairly busy with a lot of people coming in after church, but we were greeted immediately and seated right away. One small detail I really appreciated was the little sign on the table that said it had been sanitized. I've never seen that before, and it was a nice touch that showed they cared about cleanliness. We arrived around 1:30-1:45 p.m., just in time since brunch runs until 3:00 p.m. Because I'd never had chicken and waffles before, I figured this was the perfect place to try it. You can choose white meat, dark meat, or a mix, and I went with the mixed option. My girl ordered the chicken and waffles with one piece of chicken, while I had to be a little greedy and ordered mine with three pieces. She also ordered a side of biscuits and gravy, and we washed everything down with a sweet tea for her and a lemonade for me. One thing I immediately noticed was the size of the drinks. They were huge, probably the equivalent of 2 regular drinks which meant we never needed refills. Our food came out surprisingly fast, about 10 minutes after ordering. The biscuits and gravy arrived first, and they were excellent. I liked that they split the biscuit into two smaller pieces instead of serving one large biscuit. It made the portion feel more generous, and the biscuits were soft, fluffy, and paired perfectly with the flavorful gravy. Now for the main event the chicken and waffles. The chicken was outstanding. It was hot, crispy, and seasoned really well. It honestly tasted like it had just come out of the fryer. The waffle was soft, flavorful, and came with a scoop of butter and a little jar of syrup, which was a nice touch. For my first-ever chicken and waffles experience, I couldn't have picked a better place. The restaurant was lively and full of energy. Families were enjoying brunch after church, and it had a welcoming, family-friendly feel. There was outdoor seating with a canopy that sprayed a cool mist to help with the warm weather, and TVs were showing a soccer match, adding to the fun atmosphere. Whether you're coming for breakfast, brunch, or dinner, this feels like the kind of place that's great for the whole family. As we were leaving, our waiter thanked us, told us goodbye, and said he hoped to see us again soon. It was the perfect ending to an already great experience. We came here Thursday, July 30th at 11:30am. We made reservations off of open table for 12. They will only seat you after half of your group arrives. They waited till our entire group arrived before they seated us. Though they didn't give up our table either so that was good. We were all there by 11:35am and we were seated at 11:40am. They came outside to let us know our table was ready. They only had 2 servers when we were there so it was quite busy for them. They seated us on the left hand side at a table for 12. We had the front table next to the window. It was perfect for our party. 3 people sat on each side and there was a bench seat on two sides. It was cozy to say the least. The table was giant and easily held all of our food with plenty of space in the center to display the flower arrangement that my coworker brought for the retiree. Our whole office was there to celebrate a retirement. She chose the place and everyone was happy with the selection of food. They are located in oak park and parking is limited. All parking is street parking with out meters which was good. Some spaces had an hour time limit and other spaces had a 15 minute time limit. I thankfully found an angled space with not time limit around the block. Thankfully we got there early to beat the lunch crowd and find parking. They open at 11am and I arrived at 11:10am to ensure our reservations went though on open table. I use open table infrequently and like to call the restaurant to ensure the reservations go through. So far I haven't had any problems, but I worry. I was unable to contact the restaurant directly as their phone only directs you to their website for reservations a there is no direct line to the restaurant which I found odd and concerning. I ordered the shrimp and grits. They weren't as good as I remembered them and wouldn't order them again. They had a little kick to them that I enjoyed. The shrimp were tender and with a little bit of struggle I was able to take off the tails. That was quite messy. I wish they came tailless. The downfall of the dish is it looks huge, they bring it out in a huge bowl, but most of the offering was sauce. There was very little grits. Grits aren't that expensive to make and I wished they had doubled the amount of grits so it filled the bowl and it wasn't just a little pile in the center. It just didn't fill me up. I was craving my coworker's fries as they sat next to me uneaten. My dish also didn't come with sides and it was the most expensive dish that was ordered. Next time I think I'll try the fried fish or fried chicken with a side of collard greens and something else. I would come back just I wouldn't order the shrimp and grits again. The ambiance was very nice. The place was quite empty when we arrived so if you are looking to get in with out a reservation come for lunch. I've come for dinner before and was lucky to get a table as it was so busy. They also have outdoor seating which I saw people at, but for me it was too hot to eat outdoors as it's summer and the heat is on. read more

A meal that feels like it came straight from grandma's kitchen. Stopped by Fixins with The Kid after a doctor's appointment in Sacramento. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was on point and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. One thing I love about Fixins is that the menu truly has something for everyone. We even got the chance to meet Aunt Pearl, whose name appears on the menu, which made the experience feel even more special. We ordered the Chicken & Waffles along with sides of Mac & Cheese and Candied Yams. The candied yams were buttery, sweet, and everything you want from a classic soul food side. The mac and cheese was rich, creamy, cheesy, and packed with flavor. The waffle was a standout. It had a subtle spice to it, a crispy exterior, and paired perfectly with the chicken. The chicken itself was well seasoned, perfectly battered, and fried just right. And then there's the Red Kool-Aid. Fixins should honestly bottle that stuff and sell it by the gallon because it was THAT good. One thing that caught my eye on the menu was their Kool-Aid soaked pickle. I didn't try it this visit, but next time I'm definitely ordering one of their sandwiches because it comes with the sandwich plates and I'm too curious not to. The food, service, and atmosphere all came together to create an experience that felt like family. Had a wonderful early dinner at Fixins! I brought a coworker who was visiting from out of state and he loved it all! The drinks, appetizers, meal and of course, THE FIXINS! First time trying Fixins and let me tell you, I honestly think the chicken here is better than Jollibee which is a crazy comparison. It was so flavorful with every bite and topped with the gravy makes it 5x better. The coleslaw had a nice heat with it which i really liked and ngl its prob the best coleslaw ive had. The biscuit with their cinnamon sugar was also elite tier, reminded me of Texas Roadhouse but honestly better. Collard greens were also top notch and I kinda regret not getting them. The mac n cheese was so gooey and complimented the chicken perfectly, I just wished they had panko and a crust on the top. Last but not least their banana pudding was ELITE. I dont think ive ever had banana pudding this good. I need to find out how to make it. Otherwise, inside was clean and busy as typical. Our server was very polite and regularly checked up on us. The downside is that there is no dedicated parking lot for this place, so street parking is always a hassle. I have come here before a couple of years ago and got the sheimp and grits. I wasn't thrilled with it because the gravy was too thick and the vegetables were too chunky for my taste. I came here a couple of weeks ago with a friend of mine to give it another try. She had the shrimp and grits and I decided to give the oxtail a try. I shared with the waitress how I love my hot food hot, and asked would it be hot. She said it would be and sadly it arrived lukewarm. Literally, lukewarm. Not her fault, that is on the kitchen. Sooo they brought me out another plate which was better, but not out of the pot hot. I appreciated the effort though. They were a bit tough and not very well seasoned. I took my leftovers home and when I recooked them, PERFECTION! had they just cooked them a bit longer themselves, it would have been perfect. I gave it 4 stars for these reasons. Absolutely no complaints at all when it comes to the service. There was a slight mishap when my entree came (it wasn't what I ordered), but they fixed it right away and did not cause any delays with us getting our food. Food - The food is great! I got the fried chicken w/ mac & cheese and yams. Everything was delicious. The fried chicken was scrumptious and even the meat was very flavorful. Food comes out in a timely manner but as I start eating the food seemed Luke warm, the fried chicken wasn't moist but almost dry as if it was sitting under a heat lamp for a while, the waffle was still crispy and was tasty after you added the strawberry butter, Mac n cheese was dense and the collard greens were salty. My wife devoured the catfish but didn't touch much of her sides yams were overly sweet and potato salad wasn't to her liking. I did try one of her hush puppies and it was more like a fried piece of cornbread. Throughout the entire dinner Rollin kept tabs on us and was the highlight of our visit. He didn't even blink when one of my wife's girlfriend shows up late. And made sure her food came out quickly since we were mostly done eating our meals. I really wanted to like this place because the vibe and music were great but unfortunately the service and happy hour confusion made the experience disappointing. Stopped by on a Friday after work with a group of about 9 people to celebrate a birthday and catch happy hour. We arrived around 2:45pm and waited until 3pm to order since happy hour starts then. The restaurant wasn't very busy at first but did start filling up shortly after. The outdoor seating and R&B music were nice, good vibes. Most of our table ordered from the happy hour menu. I ordered the blue raspberry margarita, a shot of El Jimador, and the mac and cheese balls. Interestingly the food came out before the drinks and we were almost finished eating before the first round of drinks finally arrived. The mac and cheese balls were good but nothing memorable. The blue raspberry margarita looked nice but the flavor was just okay. Others at our table had similar comments about the food, sliders were good but nothing that really stood out. Service was unfortunately the biggest issue. Our server seemed overwhelmed and it was difficult to get their attention throughout the visit. Drinks took a long time both rounds and we had to signal a few times just to get assistance which started to throw off the mood for the table. The biggest surprise came when the bill arrived. The website lists $6 margaritas during happy hour which is one of the reasons we waited until 3pm to order. However the margaritas on our bill were $12. If certain margaritas are excluded from the special that should probably be clarified because it was confusing and felt misleading. With a party our size gratuity was automatically added and the bill ended up being over $400 which made the slow service even more noticeable. The atmosphere and music were nice and the food was decent but the slow service and unclear happy hour pricing made this a disappointing experience for our group. I've visited Fixins a few times now, and each time our experience has been consistent and the food has been delicious. Our latest visit was on a Saturday night, date night with my husband and we put in a reservation ahead of time. I'm glad we did because there were a bunch of people outside waiting for a table. Upon entering they were ready to seat us right away at one of the four top booths- but we spotted a couple open seats at the bar and offered to sit there instead so others could take the big table. Our server/bartender was friendly and we ended up ordering purple koolaid ($5) (their sugar to flavor ratio is perfect). It's a LARGE glass, and probably could be shared. We also ordered the Oxtails ($30) and the three piece fried chicken ($23) to share and knew we'd have leftovers. Their oxtails are fall off the bone and really flavorful in the gravy. The chicken is perfectly crispy and they give you a choice of dark or white meat- we opted for dark because it's more flavorful- and it was cooked perfectly. We both chose okra for our sides, it's not something you see everywhere and Fixins does a great job. The restaurant was busy and buzzing with energy. There is indoor and outdoor seating. If you're looking for something close by while you wait for a table there are great shops like Strapping to pop into. There's also plenty of street parking in the area. read more

I've become a regular at Fixin's Soul Kitchen - they are consistently tasty and now that I can make a reservation online the wait is gone. My only issue is that the two times we have had the male servers, our wait time literally doubles. I usually order the oxtails, chicken and waffles, and a Kool-Aid (unless I'm grabbing a drink from the bar), and the food is always sooo good--honestly a 10/10 every time. The service is consistently great--super welcoming and friendly, which makes the whole experience even better. I do recommend making a reservation so you can get seated quickly. The chicken breast is succulent and juicy. The ancestors hands were guiding the chef as they seasoned the chicken cause the gravy-&-crispyskin combo were heavenly. It reminded me of my Mom's perfectly seasoned fried chicken, so kudos to the chef over there. *Chicken and Waffles 3/5 - This is only referring to a To-Go order I had for this item. It's placed in a package that has ventilation holes. You puncture the holes to keep air ventilation so the waffle does not get soggy and the chicken stays crisp. Fixin's Soul Food has the best Soul food of any we have ever had. It is always fresh and wonderful. They have a great menu so you can go a few times without repeating, but some things you just must have. They have great fried chicken and the best greens and mac and cheese and their pork chops smothered are wonderful and I am very picky about smothered pork chops. They can be dry and over cooked and tuff. These are perfect. I mean they are just perfect. Their corn bread is great. If you can't finish it, don't be shy, ask for a bag and they will give you one. They heat up so great. The service is the best. Now, it takes a minute for them to get your food. That is because it is not laying around in bin somewhere, they have to make it. They never rush you. For being new to the area, I was recommended to go make a trip to this restaurant, and I definitely was not disappointed. Immediately after walking into the restaurant my family and I were greeted warmly by the staff and seated right away. The menu had a good selection to choose from and everything sounded good. I chose the gumbo and added some shrimp and it tasted amazing. I cleared that plate clean. Another thing I would love to add is the place being very spacious and gave a relaxed vibe. I enjoyed how the staff made my family and I feel welcomed and like regulars especially Aunt Pearl! She made sure we felt like we were at the house getting a home cooked meal and the food exceeded our expectations. Definitely will be coming back again! My go/to "lil bits" is the cornmeal fried green tomatoes with a smoky chipotle mayo, very fresh and tasty and the perfect starter to any meal. We happened to be in town so we decided to try this spot as the pictures on here looked really good. We were able to get seated fairly quickly although after we arrived, I noticed a line started to form. I will start off by saying that this place is really loud. If you are looking for somewhere that is quiet. This is definitely not the spot for you. You can hardly hear yourself over everyone else's conversation. We got their hot chicken sandwich as well as the fried chicken, macaroni and french fries. I will say the macaroni was really good. The fried chicken in my opinion lacked a little bit of flavor. The biscuit was also really good as well. Service was ok. Our server really didn't talk to us at all. Basically our whole time there we had almost 0 to no interaction with her apart from when we placed our order. She also originally gave us straws for our water and then she took one of the straws back, which was a bit weird. The whole time there, she would just come around periodically to refill our water cups, but nothing more was really said. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'd be back. It saddens me to give Fixins 3 stars. They are more deserving of 3.5, yet not quite a 4 for me. The food was solid, but not a standout. I pulled up on a busy Sunday and thankfully there was a seat at the bar. To drink, I ordered the Uncle Nearest Strawberry Cooler and to nibble on, I went with the fish nuggets and fried green tomatoes. The fish itself was mild in flavor and the coating was seasoned well. The tomatoes were overly seasoned in my opinion. This is just a personal preference, the seasoning was similar to what you would find on a fried fish. This is a great option for vegetarians. The service was good, although the wrong order was put in for me and I had to wait some time for my fish nuggets. Meh, mistakes happen. We had a really long wait time for decent enough food, don't think I'll come back. We got there at around 1:30 on a Sunday during the summer and waited around 40 minutes to be seated. We had the most amazing, welcoming experience on Saturday, August 15. The staff was incredibly accommodating even when our reservation time changed due to our travel delays. From the moment we walked in until the time we left, everyone in my group was so pleased.The food was a 10 out of 10! Once we got back on the bus, everyone was talking about how fast the food came out, and how it was quick, hot, fresh, and good. I wish I had taken more pictures of the food because the catfish nuggets were fire, and the adult Kool-Aid was apparently incredible.There was a small issue with being double-billed, but I spoke to the manager, BJ, after I caught it later that day.
