Grits with cheese
Steven C.

Really good Southern dishes being cooked up. Mom and pops type spot. Highlight for me here was the shrimp Po' boy sandwich. Crispy shrimp with a tangy sauce served on a soft French roll. Loved it. Their fries here are bomb. I liked the Mac and cheese too. Super creamy. My lady loved her breakfast. The crispy bacon was nice. Pancakes were her favorite part. I plan on returning to try their famous pies.

My friend suggested this Southern-style food cafe. When we arrived, I expected the place to be a lot bigger than it was. It was very full, but luckily we were able to get a table. I ordered the chicken fried steak, and my husband ordered the roasted chicken. We really enjoyed our meal and will return soon so we can try out all their southern-inspired meals. I think the next time we visit, I will venture out and try the chicken and waffles.

Sarom's Southern Kitchen has been on my to try list for a while and finally had a chance to check them out. Arrived at around noon on Tuesday. It was pretty busy but we were able to snag a table. Service was friendly. Wanted the shrimp and grits, but was told they were out. So, ordered the chicken wings and waffle. Friend ordered the catfish. The portions were huge. 2 waffles, 4 chicken wings, 2 catfish fillets. Chicken wings are not usually a go to order for me, but these ones were good. Crispy, moist, and flavorful. The waffles were good too. Friend enjoyed the catfish as well. We had leftovers b/c we couldn't finish it all. Will definitely return as there are other items I'd like to try on their menu, including their desserts.

The outside isn't fancy but the food sure was and the staff were very friendly. I had the friend chicken, greens, biscuits and gravy. Everything was really good and reasonably priced.

Our first time at Sarom's! The gumbo was hands down the best thing we ordered!!!! Fried chicken was a little burnt. Greens had a bit of kick that I like. I didn't try my husbands corn beef hash but he said it was good. The wait is crazy long even if you go early. We waited awhile for our food as well! Next time we will arrive once they open!

This location had really great service! I tried a blended mocha here and it was better than some of the coffee shops I frequent downtown. The location is a home town kind of feel. The decor is very breakfast - if that's a term. The food was good too. We had the chicken and waffles and jambalaya.

Sarom's Southern Kitchen is a charming, family-owned gem offers an impressive variety of breakfast and lunch options that cater to just about every craving. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the staff are consistently friendly, and the food is always delicious. Whether you're in the mood for a fresh salad or crispy chicken and waffles, there's something for everyone on the menu. I've visited several times and somehow never got around to leaving a review, until now. On this visit, I ordered the catfish with cheese grits and scrambled eggs, along with a steak sandwich and fries. Both dishes were hearty, flavorful, and hit the spot. Even though we had a party of six, we were seated quickly and our food arrived in good time. The service was smooth and attentive, just as it always is. One of our group ordered the chicken wings, and wow--crispy, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely addictive. Easily a 10/10! If you're looking for a place that feels like home and serves up consistently great food, this spot is a must-visit.

Nice little mom and pop spot to get some good food. I ordered the chicken and waffles which was on point. They give you 2 waffles and 4 whole Wings so its plenty of food, it was $20 for the plate. I also ordered the cheese grits which were good but nothing to call home about. The waffles were light and flavorful but the wings were the star of the show. I did request them fried hard which were perfect. They were nice and crispy and still juicy inside, they were not over cooked. The flavor was on point you can taste the spices. I'll definitely be returning to try other items on the menu. The service was on point, my waiter was fast and the food came out quick.

Still coming here in 2026! Food was perfect today. Chicken and waffles. Orders with breast and an order with wings. Taste and texture was 10/10. Chicken fried steak was gobbled up. French toast disappeared of our plates and pancakes and biscuits and gravy all 10/10. Been coming here since 2014.

Thanks to my friend for bringing me here! I come here with her when we are craving spicy chicken and waffles because this is the place to get it at. The spicy chicken and waffles are so good. The chicken is perfectly spicy and flavorful and the waffles are delicious. The restaurant can get pretty busy so keep that in mind. Parking can be kinda annoying when it does get busy but it's worth it. The staff are nice and they keep it decently clean.

Coming here is like coming home. Seeing the mom and daughter operate together is something I wish I had in my life. They flow together so lovely. The man who greets us is so sweet and funny. He is the most genuine young man. Coming here on the weekends is a must. The moment you walk in, you're fam. Every time we visit, I'm always shocked with how fast the food comes out. The quality is amazing. I switched it up today and tried the super am burger. The amount of avocado was out of this world. Fresh and had the most perfect flavor. Forever keeping this our weekend hideaway

We have passed by Sarom's in the course of our adventures many times and have noticed how busy it seems to be. That's a great sign that the food is good, prices are reasonable, or both. We tend to eat outside of the busy hours and found it to be about half full. Dining area is basic. No fuss booths with tables and chairs filling the middle. We both ordered omelettes and chose the option of biscuits and gravy over toast. These were probably some of the BEST we've had in quite some time. Very fluffy, not dry, savory gravy. Hubby chose country potatoes and I chose grits to accompany our meals. ( grits were meh) Then we ordered two waffles to share. Sounds like a lot but our plan was for leftovers. This is where the breakdown happened. Our food arrived strangely in random order. First came a biscuit with gravy alone. I love to eat my biscuits and gravy mixed with my meal. Not as an appetizer. About the time we finished, the waffles appeared. Then later, the omelettes arrived one at a time. As two foodies, we have a certain way of going about our meal. First we do savory, then end with a waffle or similar like it's dessert. I guess this was an eat dessert first day. Coffee was never refilled and check backs didn't really happen. As for the food, it was great! Tasted wonderful and cooked exactly to order for a reasonable price. We had plenty of leftovers. Servers seemed to have been short the day we visited which definitely impacted our experience. Food. Just. Trickled. In. Yes. We will be back if we are ever in the area and ready for good food in hopes that the service we experienced was just an anomaly and not the norm. Servers were very friendly when we interacted with them. Btw... their restrooms are exceptionally clean!

It honestly depends. The smaller the party, the shorter it is to get a table than it it is if you had a party of maybe 6 or more. The longest I've waited for just 3 of us is 10 mins. And we usually go around 9 or 10.

We learned on our very first visit how good the gumbo is and it's become a must ever since. The people who work here are friendly and you can tell they have a lot of regulars who stop in for food. There's a gravel lot right next to the building and you can take your food to go or enjoy it there. Our food took about 15-20 minutes and then we took it home to enjoy. The portions are definitely fair for the price. They also pack everything well for the ride home. The gumbo is our favorite, it's flavorful and packed with protein like their sausage, chicken, and shrimp and has just a hint of spice. We tried their riblets for the first time and it was a generous portion and we really enjoyed the bbq sauce they used. The mac and cheese is good, but I like mine creamier. It does have a little spice which was nice. The dressing was packed with flavor and we were excited they offered this side because you don't see it everywhere. Their hot water cornbread is definitely something they're known for and is really good on its own or dipped into the gumbo. The Palmer here tastes like Brisk raspberry tea mixed with lemonade, and we really enjoy this twist on it. Overall this spot is a local gem and we love visiting.

(I found this restaurant by accident on Google.) I decided to stand there and review the very clear appetizing menu, taking a moment to soak in this unusual eating spot. I enjoyed the uniqueness and creativity of the layout--you have to be here to understand it. Anyway, as I was standing there, I heard a very pleasant voice ask, "May I help you?" I reached up and turned up my "pretend" hearing aid to make sure I heard that voice coming from a professional Young Queen. It made me forget I was at a soul food establishment! Usually, I am greeted with rolling eyes, laziness, and--most of all--attitude. (See one of my old podcasts link below regarding my opinion on soul food restaurants on iHeartRadio): https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-david-mack-show-105280474/episode/lena-s-soul-food-in-oakland-ca-119449772/?cmp=android_share&sc=android_social_share&pr=false Back to my review: Her name is Victoria... like the Queen! I told Victoria I was looking at the menu, which has a very nice variety of soul food selections. Victoria asked me if I would like to sample the gumbo. Sure! Victoria came back with a small, teasing sample, and after tasting it, I told her, "SOLD!" Just from the taste of that gumbo, I knew my Mother's Spirit was back there doing the cooking. It was a very cold day, and I would have eaten there, but because of the layout, I ordered the family size to-go. The gumbo also comes with hot water cornbread. Victoria took my order, my payment, and advised me it would be ready in five minutes. I waited in my car. I came back in four minutes, and my order was already bagged and ready for pickup. I "suffered" during the hour-long drive home, smelling the aroma of that meal the whole way! Finally home, I opened the secure bag, filled to the top container, and took out the prize. The food presentation was excellent! I put the gumbo in a bowl, and it was still very hot. I then proceeded to taste my meal: Rice: Nice and fluffy! Chicken: Flavored perfectly. Soup Juice: Perfect. Prawns: Excellent. Sausage: Plump and sliced perfectly. All many other ingredients: Very tasty with a hint of spice. Note: There were no crab legs to make a mess (which I did NOT miss) and no slimy okra (which was great)! The sweet hot water cornbread was very buttery and looked like a thick pancake. I put mine in the toaster oven to warm it up and get it a little crisp. It was amazing! That gumbo not only warmed me up, but it also put me to sleep like a big baby! If this restaurant continues with the trajectory of this review (professional attitude, unique layout, and great menu items), they will be the "go-to" soul food spot on the 80! I wouldn't change a thing! I will return because I want to report on another food item I had my eye on before the gumbo sample! Go check out this spot and see the Young Queen Victoria! Make sure you tip her for great service (No Tax On Tips), just like I did! David Mack (Reviewer-in-Chief)

I was in the Vallejo area, and saw House of Soul on Yelp. It was 1.5 miles away, but closing in less than an hour. I decided to go by and see it they were still serving. I wasn't really expecting much 45 mins before closing. I parked right in front, and saw they were cleaning up the dining room. So I asked the young lady if they were still open, and she said "Yes, c'mon in!" I ordered the fried chicken combo meal with mac 'n cheese and green beans. Total was $20.04. I thought it was funny that they price it at $20.04. It would actually look better if it was $19.99. How was the food? I was surprised. 35 mins before closing, and the fried chicken was still moist with a spicy heat to the flavor. The skin was lightly crisp. The mac 'n cheese was creamy. The green beans were just okay. The food was being kept in warmers. There's nothing wrong with keeping food in warmers as long as holding times are observed and proper temps are maintained. As I left both the young lady and the server thanked me for coming. Next time, I will have to return at around dinner time. Support Local Business in the SF Bay Area!
