Kids French Toast
Courtney O.

My family and I stopped into Sammy's for the breakfast on Saturday for the first time. It's close to our house and it's across the street from another Del Paso Heights staple - Lil Joe's. We ordered the Kids French Toast, Prime Rib Skillet and the Low Calorie Plate. Everything was really good and seasoned well - I especially liked the fruit salad that came with the Low Calorie Plate - it wasn't the boring fruit like you'd expect. The Prime Rib Skillet was a huge portion and the Low Calorie Plate was a great mix of flavors without making me feel too full. While we did enjoy our food and service was great as well - very family oriented - we saw at least 3 generations working, the place needed a deep clean. I would have given 5 stars, but there were a few things I noticed that threw me off. Is that going to stop me from coming back? No, because the food speaks for itself and it's down the street from our house. We will definitely be back soon!

2 egg breakfast with crispy bacon and sourdough toast (May 2025)

As others have said, great diner in Sac that opens early and serves really tasty breakfasts. We stopped by right when it opened on the weekend and grabbed a booth and quickly got some hot diner coffee and tall cups of ice water. Service was super friendly and relaxed. We dove into the 2 egg breakfast, which featured perfectly cooked over easy eggs, crispy hash browns (that were a little greasy but fine for me as they were nicely seasoned), crispy bacon and crunchy sourdough toast. Hot sauce and ketchup were on the tables as condiments, along with packets of smuckers jam. Also tried the Cal slam with 2 eggs over easy, thick cut ham, hash browns and 2 large fluffy pancakes topped with butter. Another solid breakfast for sure. Our coffee cups stayed full throughout breakfast and service was appropriately attentive as well. Overall, an excellent experience and look forward to coming back again soon!

Fantastic find alert for breakfast or brunch in NorCal: Sammy's Diner in Sacramento, CA! Was craving an early breakfast before my trade show in downtown today and stumbled upon this great breakfast diner spot, originally opened in 1944, a bit northeast of Old Sac. Nostalgic vibes but still, in the most positive way of reading this comment: not showing its age at all . Ample free parking available, too. Things were a bit quiet in the diner when I visited, probably because I arrived around 6am and Sacramento weather was rainy at the time, but this spot is capable of hosting a lively and sizable crowd of patrons with plenty of comfortable seats available. Took the opportunity of today's lighter pace to compliment the owner, Naz, on the cheerful decor sprinkled throughout the diner. NICEST AND SWEETEST OWNER EVER! She shared about how she and her mom took over the restaurant after the Covid-collapse and her story was quite impressive and inspiring. After struggling with all sorts of external issues in the surrounding area that significantly impacted the cosmetic appearance of the diner, she shared that it was very much a "fixer-upper" when she took it on at the time. She won over support from city leadership, after many attempts at it, to boost efforts to keep the surrounding area clean and trouble-free. She obviously takes great pride in how she has revived this long-standing restaurant! Naz has a high level of passion for providing a top-notch dining experience and that upbeat attitude shows up throughout the place. Attention to the small details is prevalent here. Copious floral arrangements, seasonally decorated for Halloween when I visited in October 2025, and very clean throughout. She even gave me a short tour of her expanded dining room to showcase her many civic recognitions, the table where her local police deputies like to hang out, and the photos of regular patrons that hang upon the walls. Outstanding food and extra friendly service. Naz is a long-term Sacramento resident who beams with joy when talking about building up this diner and making it worthy of being called an iconic neighborhood establishment for people to enjoy. She said that she receives a lot of out-of-town visitors because of many hotels in the surrounding area but I would ABSOLUTELY recommend going out of the way to eat here when I'm in town. I had the veggie omelette, substituted fruit instead of potatoes, and substituted waffle instead of bread choice. Heartily recommend a meal here if you're anywhere near the area!

Great breakfast! Lovely old school spot with great service and delicious diner favorites. We went on a Saturday morning and it was pretty busy, but our food came rather quickly. I had chilaquiles which had just the perfect amount of heat. Recommend!

This was some of the best diner food we have had! From the moment we walked in we were met with kindness. You can tell that they take pride in what they create

Fantastic people and fantastic Diner! I ordered Eggs over medium, w/ bacon, a waffle and coffee. Everything was fantastic, and the owner (Naz and her mother Moon) and staff are friendly and have a beautiful story of how this classic diner was resurrected to life during the tough times of C-19. I highly recommend coming to Sammy's Family Restaurant if you are in the Sacramento area!!!

Very happy to have finally stopped in for breakfast. My meal was seasoned perfectly and well executed. It's good to see a family run business and I hope they continue to thrive in our neighborhood. Very friendly and welcoming, it almost felt like home.

The burgers are Amazing ! Let me tell you best in town. Real ground beef a definite go to for me. Back again and again for this one. Staff are friendly make you feel like family. The chef does his thing ,Thanks Jamal.

Sammy's is back! Better than ever. Same great retro vibe, but totally refreshed from top to bottom. Every surface has been scrubbed, reupholstered, or repainted. Amazing breakfast experience!

Loco moco with over easy eggs

I would say 3.5 stars. Staff was friendly just preoccupied with what I'm assuming are the local/ frequent customers. We ordered pretty quick but the wait for the food was kind of longer even though the restaurant was pretty empty. The food was good. One of the over easy eggs on the loco moco was more on the fired side and the waitress noticed it and brought a new over easy eggs. That was pretty nice. Nice size menu also.

Very very good food served hot and very delicious. I order the liver and onions and the pancakes are out of this world. Great service and chat! This place is clean and very inviting. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you again!

The Swiss and Spinach omelette is tasty, rich and I savored every bite. Nora, the owner is a small business owner and takes the time to provide fist class service. Checking in with how food is and refilling water. The ambiance is friendly, intimate, inviting and cozy. The atmosphere and dining experience is above the usual.

Good size breakfast. Family owned. Mother is old school and fun. Daughter is there with a smile and hug. Great staff. Plenty of parking.

Use to be our favorite spot. Something changed. Not sure if it's new cooks or what. Not a bad place but not like it used to be.

I've been to other restaurants where the sauce was not fresh and tasted like tap water. They have a buffet for sauces and veggies. A drink is included, and they have a soda fountain with Coke Zero (big plus for me)! I recommend starting with the cream cheese wontons, and ending your meal with a nice condensed milk bun for dessert. The wontons are crispy and delicious and the milk bun was soft and the perfect portion! The restaurant is clean and has beautiful decorations. There are two private rooms folks can reserve as well. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant where you can park.

I originally came in fully committed to ordering the Bún Bò Huế (P4), but the moment I heard about the $3.50 giant rib add-on, all bets were off. I switched to the P1 Combo Pho just so I could have that massive, fall-off-the-bone rib soaking in that rich, aromatic broth and it was absolutely worth it. The broth was deeply savory and comforting, layered with flavor without being overly salty, and that rib took things to another level. Tender, meaty, and perfectly braised, it made each bite feel extra indulgent. My boyfriend went with the bánh mì pork sandwich, and we added fried egg rolls for the table. The bánh mì had that perfect balance of crispy baguette, juicy pork, and fresh pickled veggies, while the egg rolls came out hot, crunchy, and packed with flavor. We also got the chance to meet the owner/chef and had such a great conversation, which made the whole experience feel even more personal. Service was friendly and attentive throughout the night. Safe to say, this spot continues to deliver -we'll definitely be back for more.

When we arrived, the restaurant itself was super cute with a nice aesthetic and good vibes, but it's very small inside with limited seating. The staff was friendly, which we appreciated, but unfortunately the food just didn't live up to expectations. We ordered several dishes, and most of them lacked flavor. The chow fun was especially disappointing--it just wasn't tasty at all. The orange chicken looked great, but honestly, I'd say Panda Express has more flavor. The chow mein and fried rice were also pretty bland. The chicken with vegetables was okay, nothing special. The highlight for us was definitely the chicken and cilantro dumplings--they were actually really good (which makes sense given the restaurant's name). Overall, it just wasn't for us. Despite the great presentation and atmosphere, the food didn't deliver, and I don't think my family and I would come back.

Despite there being endless selections in Sacramento sometimes the American Chinese options are .... bleh ... They are either too oily. Mediocre taste. Overpriced. It's hard to find one that really stands out. Recently my coworkers and I all pitched in on takeout from here for Lunar New Year and ordered five dishes as takeout. One of my coworkers was the one who recommended this spot. Let me just say the food was incredible. The seafood chow mein was the standout dish out of everything. Loaded with octopus tentacles, scallops, shrimp. Feel like half the time you get seafood options these days they skimp out but this place did not disappoint. The fried rice was a little more unique than I've personally tried before with pieces of beef and cabbage. But still very tasty. And the pork dishes we got including the sweet and sour were just incredible. One thing I do want to mention was some pieces of the pork did have a bone attached, but I honestly didn't mind it much. The flavor made it up for it. Also inside of this place looks very modern, clean. Since we only got takeout I can't say for certain service for sit down but ordering and getting our food was simple. The staff were very kind and friendly. Again, THANK GOD I finally have a good Chinese food option. No more oily salty food or Panda Express.

I've dined in before and the tables are fully set up with all the necessary condiments, but today I just needed to get home and hope the food could do its thing. I ordered the pho gai, which is lighter and cleaner than the typical Vietnamese beef pho. The broth has a slightly fermented, deeply umami flavor, probably from fish sauce, along with lemongrass, chicken broth, chicken breast, and ginger. Perfect when you're stuck with a cold. It was packaged really well with chili oil, jalapeños, celery, lime, and the noodles on the side. There isn't a ton of chicken if you're looking for high protein, but I didn't care. It was so good and soothing. Nothing like sweating over a bowl of herbal soup while sick. I also ordered the Lao sausage, which has a great blend of aromatics, especially lemongrass. It comes with a sauce I'm not totally familiar with, but it's bright and limey, likely fish-sauce based, with something like charred pepper or tomato that almost reminds me of a Mexican salsa. So good. This place is awesome. I've only ever gotten soups here, but I definitely need to branch out and try more of the menu. Prices are very fair too. The soup alone was just under 1.5 liters so great bang for your buck.
