Focaccia bread
Christopher V.

This was a 10/10 experience. Perfect place for a nice steak dinner. First of the service was excellent. The lighting in the restaurant is perfect for a cute little date, especially with the light at your table. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The bread was super soft and buttery. The sides were the weakest part of the dinner, but still excellent. The potatoes were crispy yet soft on the inside. The Mac and cheese was creamy, but just okay flavor.

Absolutely fell in love with this steakhouse. I came here with a couple friends for a nice dinner and was absolutely blown away. First the atmosphere is incredible dim lights, colorful it feels like an amazing fine dining experience. We tried out a couple of the menu items and none of them disappointed. The oysters were so fresh buttery, and that hint of lemon really sealed it all. The steaks were beautifully cooked, a perfect medium rare so Juicery it was just melt in your mouth. Goodness, I found to be perfectly seasoned. The drinks were also a whole experience. They were colorful, so beautiful to look at and tasted perfectly. Definitely got tipsy, but did not taste it at all, which was perfect for me. All in all would definitely be coming back here again.

Lamb chops for dine downtown 2025

Went here for the second year in a row for their dine downtown menu. This was my top/most favorite place I tried last year and this year is still the same. We were recommended to make reservations for lunch so I did on a Thursday. It was not busy when we got here for lunch, so it was great. The place looks huge when it's empty and it was nice and quiet for lunch. My coworkers and I all opted for the DD menu. We all got the steak bites appetizers to start, and they got the steak entree while I did butter chicken for variety and so we can all try the full menu. I preferred the steak over the chicken, but the chicken was not bad at all. In fact, it was really juicy and moist, but the steak had more flavor. For dessert, I got the orange Pana Cotta and the coworker got the bread pudding. Both were really good, but I liked the Panna Cotta more. Our server was great and attentive as well. We had a choice of still or sparkling water and we all opted for sparkling. Her recommendation for the DD menu was spot on. Great place and great service. Food is excellent as always.

I 100% enjoyed my meal and my experience at Butcher & barrel. Firstly we had a reservation for 8:15 and unfortunately i was the only person on time, the rest of my party strolled in about 20-30 minutes after me but the host and waitress were all so accommodating and did not have any issue with that at all! The host allowed me to sit at the table they had ready for us and wait for my party. The waitress asked did i want to order drinks or wait for the rest of my party. I ended up just getting water and waiting for the rest of my party. When everyone got there it took about 10 minutes for everyone to figure out what they wanted to eat, and what drinks we wanted, the waitress came to take our order. She was so lively and friendly. She Explained the menu & the questions that we had (which were a lot haha) & never seemed annoyed or bothered. It was about a party of six of us and everyone said she was such a good waitress.. we ordered a little bit of everything we got a steak. A margarita. We had some fries, the spinach dip, I got a tequila flight with additive free tequila. I did want to mention that they carry a lot of additive free alcohol, which I definitely appreciated. Wr also got a salmon plate with mashed potatoes on the side. My grandma was even able to get some hot tea. My dad who is a steak connoisseur said this was one of the best steaks he had in Sacramento. It was seasoned so well and cooked perfectly exactly how he asked, which was medium rare the salmon was just as good, It was flavored so perfectly. It tasted like it just came out of a home cooked kitchen. The chef actually ended up coming from the back and shaking all of our hands and thanking us for dining he also sent out a plate of focaccia bread with mushrooms and some type of gravy sauce on top, which was so divine. The whole staff at Butcher and barrel were so welcoming and nice so I just wanna say good job on that when you can dine somewhere and the food and the service is top-tier that's a place you will go back again. Also, I love the vibe of the place. It gives a really cute laid-back type of ambience, but goes along with where they have the restaurant placed in downtown Sacramento. I feel like the prices were on par with what you will find at this level of a restaurant for everything that we got. There was 6 of us which included alcohol the bill came out to $530 plus tip so we ended up spending around 600 and something dollars total and everyone was happy with that. We will definitely be back here. Good job butcher and barrel.

Met friends here for Dine Downtown and sat at the bar for happy hour while we waited. Happy Hour is only served at the bar fortunately there are two bars lol. Although there isn't a huge selection if food or drinks we had the sliders $12 a Nitty's Cider $5 and house wine $7. They were out of house wine so we had Doua which I s normally $15 per glass. Our bartender was friendly and informative. We moved to our table for dinner where Daniel provided excellent service. Between the four of us we sampled everything on the Dine Downtown menu and everything was good. The flank steak was a large portion and surprisingly tender. The cranberry bread pudding was favored over the panna cotta and the appetizers were a toss up. I would really like to come back and try the house burger which sounds delicious for $22. Overall we really enjoyed our experience and the DD menu was delicious and affordable.

Filet with Peppercorn Sauce and Smashed Potatoes

Had a reservation for a Saturday night, it was busy! My steak was SO good. Melt in your mouth. Cooked to a perfect medium. The peppercorn sauce was very good. And the shamshed potatoes were simple, yet flavorful. I was thinking about that steak for the next couple of days. Whenever I'm back in SAC, I would definitely come back here. My coworker that I was with got some kind of fancy burger, but after he saw my steak, he said, "I should have ordered that." ha -- although, he was very happy with his burger, too.

This place is a must-visit! Perfect for both large groups and intimate dinners, the entire experience felt elevated from start to finish. The service was outstanding, and the staff's recommendations were spot on, they really know their menu. :) The steak was the star of the night, cooked perfectly and packed with flavor in every bite. I'm already planning my next visit (the airline chicken is calling my name!). The location is also ideal, making it easy to grab drinks before or after dinner and enjoy everything Sacramento has to offer.

This was my 44th birthday dinner and I loved it! The atmosphere can be dressed up or down and you will comfortable either way. Make sure to have a resy or you will have a wait or have to eat at the bar. We started with apps and drinks. My fireside margarita was so good and I'm not a drinker. We got the fried burrata with focaccia and it was delish!! My husband got a BMB Old Fashioned and the pour was generous. The chef gave us a mushroom focaccia app and it was so good! For entrees we got the New York strip, 14oz ribeye and the lamb chops. As sides we got mashed potatoes, smashed potatoes and button mushrooms. The potatoes were ok but those mushrooms they were amazing! I could eat them everyday! They gave me a sparkler and sorbet for dessert. Dinner really wasn't too expensive either! We will be back!! Thanks for an awesome birthday dinner!!

This was a great experience- we came for the $45 fixed menu (appetizer, entree, dessert). Sacramento dine week. I'm so happy we chose butcher and barrel- the waiters and staff were all very kind and the food was good I ordered the acorn squash soup and WOW!! That alone was so delicious. Then we ordered the steak which was really well done, but the sauce was extremely overwhelming (picture 2) and spicy. I then asked for a template (picture 1) and it was better The tiramisu dessert was not good honestly... very dry , the other desserts were sold out so that was the only option 3.5/5

Bobby Y.

Where do I start. The dining room is blindingly bright, this is a restaurant not a sleazy used car lot, someone clearly hasn't thought about atmosphere. My steak was unevenly cooked, which is a fundamental failure for any restaurant worth its salt. The plates were poor quality with a bizarre texture, making it nearly impossible to cut cleanly. The staff were friendly enough, but disengaged going through the motions rather than actually hosting. Then there's the wine list. Stocking $1,900 a bottle wines is a vanity exercise that serves almost no one. That shelf space would do far more work stocked with exceptional wines at accessible price points -- you'd sell more, satisfy more guests, and stop leaving people frustrated with the single, limited option available by the glass. It reads like a list curated for ego, not for the customer. Potential is there. But right now, the execution is letting everything down.

Fried burrata
Gurpreet K.

Third time visiting this place, and it's always spot on. We started with the fried burrata appetizer, which was really good--the sauce had a little kick that made it perfect. The kids ordered the butcher's burger with fries, and the fries were seasoned with garlic and absolutely yummy. I had the Impossible Burger with a salad, which was surprisingly really good, and my husband loved his steak as usual. I didn't catch our server's name, but she was exceptionally good--attentive, friendly, and made the experience even better. We'll definitely be back again.

Sophia V.

Came in with a group of friends during lunch time. The place was empty so we were quickly seated. The ambience was nice. It felt like the place was reserved just for us. I didn't like when the server came over and made a comment. She said that we were looking at the dinner menu so she wanted to give us the lunch menu instead. She said she "saw the expression on our faces" and that "the lunch menu should be much better." As if implying we couldn't afford the dinner menu. I just didn't like that initial vibe. She did try to be helpful and shared her knowledge on the menu. I appreciated her giving us time to explore the menu before deciding what we wanted to eat. We tried the fried burrata. The focaccia bread was soft and bouncy. The wild mushroom poutine was delicious. The sauce was flavorful while it was spread across a bed of fries. I tried the hamburger. The meat was good. I wasn't a fan of the bread. It easily crumbled while I was eating it. I liked that they're a farm to fork restaurant so they used local ingredients.

I remember from the video they said this was considered a "bartenders bar",the kind of spot that that bartenders and workers in the industry would hangout after their shifts-I liked the sound of that. Walking up to where I thought the bar was located,it was kinda funny because it was just an innocent looking blue door with the words "Cocktail" along the side-doesn't look like much at all,I'd imagine I've walked by this place many times without thinking of ever going in-that was changing this time. When I walked in I 100% knew I was stumbling upon something special-it was a tiny place but it was overflowing with energy, not many booths in this bar and it may be the smallest bar I've ever been to but it felt special.Looking at the clientele I felt like I was with my people,it was so cool in there. This is the kind of place I would take my wife and any of my friends before a special night out and be it a dinner or a concert or a production at Safe Performing Arts Center and feel like it would set the right vibe for the night. Looking over the menu, they had some very interesting looking drinks, the wife went with a French 75($12.00)and I went with a Pecan Brown Sugar Old Fashioned($16.00)The bartenders are very friendly and super personable and really took their time and took pride in their drinks-I had never had an Old Fashioned quite like that one,but it went down super smooth-I loved i-I look forward to going there again asap. A coupe of things about this bar-they do only have 1 unisex bathroom,it was very clean. Also this place is so old school that they are a "Cash-Only " bar. They do have an atm in the bar in case you forget your cash. They have a big fish tank behind the bar that really put the room together nicely-I liked it a lot. In closing,if you ever find yourself in the Ice Blocks part of midtown and want to experience an awesome bar that feels very unique-head on down to Frank and have a drink or two-you won't regret it-I think I may have found my new favorite bar in all of Sacramento. The cucumber jalapeño margarita was refreshing, though a little sweeter than I expected and missing the spicy kick I was hoping for. The guacamole was fresh and tasty, but the portion was quite small and barely enough for two people in my opinion. The salsa was also small but it was absolutely phenomenal. The chicken tacos were excellent, with tender chicken that was perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. The enmoladas were also fantastic and are a great way to sample Oaxaca's three unique mole sauces, each with its own distinct character. One thing to note is that the chicken filling is intentionally prepared very simply in traditional Oaxacan cuisine so that the mole remains the star of the dish. If you prefer heavily seasoned meat, this dish may be milder than what you are used to. Overall, everything we tried was delicious and offered a wonderful taste of authentic Oaxacan flavors. I guess they are opened most days from 4p-12am and until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights. They do not have a dedicated parking lot for this bar but they are located near 34th and Broadway-so unlimited street parking is available for those who drive here. In closing-I really really enjoyed my visit to The Butterscotch Den and I was pretty sure I had found my new favorite bar in Sacramento with a bar in the Ice Blocks but I am pretty sure that has changed and The Butterscotch Den is my new favorite bar in the greater Sacramento area-if you find yourself looking for a new spot to enjoy some adult beverages or maybe looking for a date night spot-don't hesitate to make your way over to The Butterscotch Den-the place is a true hidden gem. PS-They have a Disco Ball in their lounge area and a vintage non-working cigarette machine-the coolest I tell ya.
