This place was SO good on all levels that I feel guilty it took me a couple weeks to post this review! I don't even know where to begin -- this was easily one of the best dining experiences I've had in a very long time. From the moment we walked in, the level of hospitality was exceptional. The wait staff, chefs, and Mr. Mulvaney himself made the entire evening feel incredibly warm and personal. By the time you leave, you genuinely feel like family. We had the smoked salmon, tuna tartare, ginger soy tuna, and the pork and every single dish was honestly perfection. Beautifully plated, perfectly balanced, and full of flavor. We were already blown away by the appetizers alone that I could barely finish my main course afterward. The ambiance strikes the a nice balance between refined and welcoming and with a warmth that makes you want to stay all night. They've managed to make you feel like you're in an elevated space while dining with extended family.. crazy, right?! Came here around lunch with a co-worker and was honestly impressed from start to finish. Parking was surprisingly easy, plenty of free street spots nearby, probably because we came just after the lunch rush. Nice change from the usual downtown scramble. We started by sharing a few plates. The house-smoked salmon with Irish brown bread came out first, and I'll be honest, we weren't totally sure how to approach it at first. Our server noticed and walked us through it, mix the traditional accompaniments directly into the salmon, then layer it over the bread. Once we did that, it clicked. The salmon had a clean, smoky depth without being overpowering, and when everything came together, it turned into a really balanced bite with a mix of richness, acidity, and texture. Next was the California cheese plate, which ended up being one of my favorite parts of the meal. The cheeses were solid, the candied walnuts added a nice crunch, but the standout was easily the caramelized onion jam. That alone carried the plate for me, slightly sweet, deeply savory, and something I kept going back to even after everything else was gone. For mains, we both went with the single-cut Lan Roc pork chop with blueberry mostarda, mashed potatoes, Alemaya Farm carrots, and Delta asparagus. This was the kind of dish where everything on the plate actually mattered. The pork chop itself was cooked perfectly, tender, juicy, with a really clean sear. The blueberry mostarda added just enough sweetness and acidity to cut through the richness without overpowering the meat. The mashed potatoes were smooth and comforting, while the carrots and asparagus brought in that fresh, slightly earthy balance. It was good enough that I ended up ordering another pork chop to go, which I almost never do. Service was great throughout, attentive without hovering, and quick to step in when we needed guidance. Came here for Valentine's Day this year and it was the perfect spot. They ended up converting their banquet hall for extra seating and it was a must. Less noisy and decor was on point which set the mood for a wonderful evening. Food was delicious! Had the aged rib eye steak which was a special for the night. When our group of 6 was headed to Mulvaneys and my friend called ahead to pre-fire 3 Brie appetizers, I thought he was being excessive. He was not. The Brie appetizers were so incredible we practically licked the containers. Highly recommend. I love Mulvaneys. You can't go wrong with their pastas, their wonderful cocktails, the salmon appetizer on brown bread, really anything. The staff is phenomenal and it's run by wonderful people too. 5 stars as they always continue to strive for excellence in all aspects of fine dining! This is a special occasion restaurant for us and the few times we have been here have all been excellent! This was my birthday celebration dinner and we sure were taken care of! All the staff wished me a happy birthday, and the menu for the evening for us was printed with "Happy Birthday Barbara". All the staff and even the owner came over to the table to make sure we were having a good time and wished me a happy birthday as well. There were 5 of us, and one of those being a vegetarian. Just a FYI to all those vegetarians and vegans out there - there is not much choice for you on the menu, but if you tell the chef they will prepare something special for you. My friend opted for the fancy squash as her entree and she did love it! However just a note to Mulvaneys - it would be a good idea to have something special to offer vegetarians and vegans on your menu. And by something special - I means something as fine and elaborate as all your other offerings. Hubby Tom S and I had the black cod and it was exquisite! Our friends ordered the gigantic and beautifully prepared pork chop and also the black cod and they were smitten as well. We had a beautiful table for 5 up against the back wall, away from the other not so quiet tables and it was fabulous! We could talk amongst ourselves and truly felt special for the evening. There are great wines by the glass on the menu, I had a wonderful glass of Pinot Noir. Prices are up there, but the quality is definitely worth it for all the food options on the menu. 11 years since my previous visit. I was extremely satisified with the food and service in 2014. Again last night the food, service, ambiance was excellent. 5 of us in the more cozy restaurant. One fussy vegan eater who did not find much on the menu to her liking. The kitchen did accommodate her the best they could. She ate the slice of grill and dressed squash but in my opinion there should be more variety and a heartier vegan meal option. My Tom Kha soup and black cod entree was perfect. Others at the table had the pork chop and the rib eye. They were happy with their meals as well. Wide variety of wines by the bottle on the list. 20 wines by the glass. I had a rose' from Washington state and an Albarino. Both were delicious. My previous comment about the high prices still stands. My wife did not each much, one plate + one glass of wine. I had soup, main dish, two glasses of wine and tiny glass of port for dessert. Our share of the total bill was $236 with tax and tip. Bring your appetite for a great meal. Our server comes in, checks in on us & then goes missing for quite a notable time. We had questions about the menu before making decisions but oh well. When he is finally back, he asked if we are ready to order. I say - I have a few questions about the menu. I get a look and not good answers. For the drinks, I ordered something and he brings back something else, saying they were out of it and he didn't want to come back empty handed. Dude - thanks for not asking me if I'd like something else and deciding for me. For the meals - we do shared appetizers. My wife picks something from the small plates and this guy says "the small plates are maybe 6-7 bites, so maybe you may want to pick something from the large plates, or we can do a double portion". Bitch what are you insinuating here? I am fuming but we were here for a special celebration so I didn't want to spoil it. I order the porkchop and this idiot says - chef recommends it medium. While I appreciate it, maybe I want my meat cooked a certain way. The dining room also has terrible ventilation. So it was a breathing nightmare all the time we were here. Tears in the eyes and super smoky! By the time we got out, our clothes had started to smell. The only saving grace was that the food was good. I had high hopes for this well-known Sacramento spot, Mulvaney's B&L, but overall the experience fell a bit short. Maybe it was better back in the day, which could explain the stellar reputation, but the food felt pretty average, and the space could use a refresh. I get that they're going for the vintage vibe of the 1893 firehouse building, but a few modern touches wouldn't hurt. Since they specialize in hand-crafted New American cuisine, I was expecting a memorable farm-to-table experience. It somewhat delivered, but not fully. We requested indoor seating on OpenTable and were placed by the entrance, which was fine. Loved the thoughtful detail of printing 'Happy Birthday' on the menu for my boyfriend--that was a sweet touch! They started us off with bread and butter for the table, but the bread was a little cold, which was disappointing. For starters, we ordered their popular house-smoked salmon with Irish brown bread. The salmon had a nice smoky flavor, but the bread had more of a crumbly scone texture, which wasn't my favorite. For mains, we had the pork chop and the New York steak. The pork chop was solid--nicely grilled, sweet from the apricot mostarda, and balanced with a spicy polenta. The steak was decent, but the blue cheese butter really carried it. I would've loved more puree because the veggies felt plain. We skipped dessert since the mains were pretty hefty, but the waiter kindly brought out two macarons for the birthday celebration--such a nice gesture! What really hurt the experience was the wait time. Our entrées took nearly 45 minutes, and the dining room wasn't that busy, so I'm not sure what happened. Even getting extra bread took a while, and we ended up ordering more since the wait was so long. For drinks, I had one of their house-made sodas, which was refreshing and not overly sweet, and my boyfriend tried a whiskey cocktail recommended by the server--he thought it was just okay. We ordered the popular charcuterie board that included pate and house made cured meats. It was good but I wish there was more bread. The mozzarella and peach salad was excellent. Very fresh with good flavor. For dinner I ordered double cut pork chop and I would recommend sharing this as it was huge. I end up sharing and there was plenty. They were nice enough to divide it up and plate it for us. The sauce really added to the flavor as the pork chop would have been on the bland side without it. We went on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Our reservations were for 6pm. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated upon the arrival. When I made the reservations, I noted that we were celebrating my Husband's birthday. When we arrived, the Menu said Happy Birthday with my husband's name right on our menus. That was a nice touch. If you order a dessert they write happy bitrhday on the platter, but they don't give out free desserts. That was a bit disappointing. Even a small bowl of ice cream would have been nice. Actually I really though they gave out there Ding Dongs to the birthday person. I was wrong. Service was impeccable. They have a ton of staff all busy serving everyone. I think they even had someone dedicated to refilling the water glasses. You can't ask for better service. The waitress checked on us multiple times. Coat check. When I came in carrying my coat they automatically checked it for me so I didn't have to hang it on the back of my chair. It was a really nice service. They have free bread service which was nice. The food did not wow us like is should have. We started with the charcutier board. It came with pate, I don't think pate is my thing. I did try it. I really liked the sausage. It was a little spicy which was good. It went well with the caviar mustard. The toast they give you to spread everything on was really good. It was a little on the greasy side and I had to wash my hands after the charcutier board so not to get grease on my dress. The second course was fresh pasta with slivered asparagus. It had a lemon sauce and was tasty. The main dish was the steak. We ordered the $75 rib eye instead of the NY Strip. I think they mixed it up and gave us the NY Strip. We should have said something, but we didn't at the time. Overall it was a good meal, but for the price it didn't have the wow factor. My husband said our dinner at ___________ had better food and at a much lower price point. Outstanding experience! Stumbled upon this restaurant on TikTok (as one does) and decided to come here for my birthday. Made a reservation same day, and even though we were a little late, they still sat us. At first, I thought they were leading us to a table at the back of the restaurant since we checked in late, but to my surprise, they sat us at a table in a little private area, which was so cute! Let me start off by saying they printed customized menus that said happy birthday. The service was exceptional, every single person was so nice and sweet, our server was an angel! Our Last Time At Mulvaney'.... We have been coming here for years. A special place for special occasions. We had been looking forward to these dinner for weeks... but what a terrible let down. Our first dish of deconstructed lox was as excellent as always and so was our first drink. But it went down hills from there and fast. We order a $15 chip which was supposed to be loaded with caviar but was stale and with such a minuscule amount of caviar that you could not taste anything but a potato chip... at $15 for one pringle... it was painful to swallow. Both of our entrees cold. Cold food cold plate for a chicken au poivre and a $70 steak was hugely disappointing. I should have been suspicious when I ordered the steak and was not asked how it should be cooked. Steak was served not only cold but gray as in barely cooked, flavorless that no amount of salt could help, and with a consistency of both chewy and gooey. Terrible combination. I order a second drink which didn't come until 20-30 minutes later , close to the time our bill came and was not made with the whiskey I order. I hated to leave a $20 drink on the table but it was undrinkable. We made the best out of our special night... but what a huge disappointment.... Not just the cost for the poor quality of food but also for the service which was friendly but not attentive. We ended up going to Piatti's for dessert and a nightcap. So many wonderful memories over the years at Mulvaney's.... but I'm pretty sure this will be our last visit. read more

But many of us left disappointed in the food. I have found that I often leave here hungry, but in this case it wasn't a matter of serving size (as this was family style) but of flavor. The cheese board was well presented but lacked pizazz. The smoked salmon and soda bread lacked flavor. The salad was too salty to eat. And the pasta as just plain bland. The mashed potatoes (a side of the fish) was the best part of the meal. Overall, this place is famous for their food, but frankly I wasn't very impressed. My husband and I decided to celebrate our 3 year anniversary at Mulvaney's. We were sat outside in the lovely courtyard area that had plenty of shade. Looking around though I was disappointed to see how out of sorts the outside area looked. There were random bricks cast aside and extremely dusty heaters. I understand that things being outside can of course get dusty however, I think for this being a more upscale restaurant the ambiance should be more maintained as it contributes to the overall experience. Our menu's were personalized to say "Happy Anniversary" which we thought was such a sweet touch! We ordered the mozzarella and tomatoes as a starter with a recommended side of bacon. The plate although seemingly simple, was packed with flavor. The GNC and Don't Chai this at home were both refreshing but a bit on the stronger side for me personally. Before COVID, I used to have lunch at Mulvaney's B&L about twice a month. We also gathered here over the years to celebrate team accomplishments and life's meaningful milestones. The service was impeccable, the food consistently delicious though the Irish brown bread and I are simply not meant for each other (far too dry for my liking). The house-smoked salmon, however, is an absolute wow. After the local administration declared it was safe to dine outdoors again, the idea of eating curbside while cars zoomed by seasoning my dinner with road dust just did not appeal to me, so I stayed away longer than expected. Recently, I returned, and it felt like visiting an old and trusted friend. Same warm brick interior, same charming courtyard, attentive staff who are knowledgeable, friendly, and somehow wise enough not to ask "How is everything?" while you're chewing. The food here asks you to slow down, breathe, and pay attention to the texture, the balance, the small layers of flavor that linger gently rather than shout. Excellent 'day after Valentine's Day' dinner here. I had made rez a week in advance to ensure we could get in. They were booked for sure and the place was hopping when we arrived. The decor is typically casual, but for VDay it was more dressy which I prefer anyway when dining out at a higher level restaurant. They also have a larger 'event' room attached and a private dining room as well. We were in the main dining room for this night. Service was exceptional throughout the evening. The menu changes with the season as this is a farm to fork restaurant. On this night we both enjoyed the 'soup of the day' which was a broccoli cheddar. The cheddar was sharp which gave the soup some punch. And, as a nice addition, they topped the soup with some 'dried' broccoli florets that had a nice flavorful crunch to them. Added a little pizzazz as well. The soup was very good. We also both ordered the braised short rib dinner which was a special for the weekend. The short rib was flavorful and extremely tender but not dry. Excellently prepared. Overall, this was a very good dining experience on a day/weekend where many times the restaurants fall short due to the over capacity of diners. Mulvaney's delivered on all marks for us. read more

We had high expectations for our Valentine's dinner, but unfortunately, it seems they weren't quite ready for the level of business they had that night. We had a 6:45 pm reservation and were seated at a nice corner table with a red tablecloth. The ambiance was spot-on, but that ended up being the only positive part of the evening. We ordered cocktails and smoked salmon as an appetizer, which was just average. By 7:00 pm, we had our drinks and appetizers, and we placed our dinner order. Our server was attentive, but after waiting 45 minutes for our food, we finally had to flag him down for an update. He explained that they were dealing with three times the usual number of orders, but honestly, that didn't feel like a valid excuse. To our surprise, it took a full hour to receive our meals: a small plate of angel hair pasta with crab and short rib over polenta. We quickly ate, as we had tickets to an 8:45 pm concert in Old Town Sac, and by then, we were starting to feel stressed. Unfortunately, at no point did anyone offer any compensation for the long wait. A simple gesture like, "Sorry for the delay--here's a small appetizer on us" or even comping the appetizer or dessert would have gone a long way in showing goodwill. My friends and I ate here for New Year's Eve last night and the more I think about our experience, the worse I feel about it. This was something we had been looking forward to for weeks and the service was just really terrible. Here is a recap of ask the things that went wrong during our dinner: 1. The service took way too long and there was way too much time between courses. My friends and I do prix fixe dinners every year on New Years Eve and have never experienced such a long service. We were there for 2 hours before we got our main course. 2. None of our courses came out at the same time. For the first course, 2 people got food and the third had to wait about 10 more minutes and then could eat until we had to flag someone else down for the proper utensils (it was a soup course and no one brought a spoon, I'm not sure why they didn't leave one at the table when they brought the other 2 soups). For the mid course, one person got food and it took another 15 minutes for the other 2 plates to come and three plates were really sloppy. While waiting for the other plates, we noticed all the other tables receiving bread. We did not recover any until we asked for it. For the main course, we all ordered the duck and again, 2 plates came out (again with sloppy plating, the sauce was dripping off the side of my plate) the food runner said she would be right back with the third plate. Then 5 minutes later our server comes back and said that there is a delay with the third plate and offers us more bread. Then another 5 minutes later, the other plate comes out. 3. We choose to make a reservation at this restaurant after looking at several menus posted online for many restaurants and one of the deciding factors was the dessert course. However, the dessert options at the restaurant were everyone's different than what was posted online and just made this a very disappointing end to an all and disappointing but very expensive dinner. The entire experience was just bad. And to have us waiting so long for food in between courses and the disorganization of the kitchen not being able to bring our party's plates at the same time was badge wise by the fact that our table was wobbly (so every time some one touched it it leaned a different direction) and the chairs were so uncomfortable my entire backside hurt when we eventually were able to leave. Paying almost $550 for a meal with this type of service was just awful. I spoke to the manager before we left but only received an apology and generic excuses which didn't change anything or make us feel any better about the amount of money we spent on this dinner. Took my husband for his 40th birthday tonight and we had a delicious dinner! The menu was personalized, wishing him a happy 40th. Sarah was our waitstaff and she was amazing! So personable and friendly. She checked in on us regularly. We had the very demure drink and a dirty vodka martini, the caviar and crème fresh on a chip, the tartare which was so so delicious, the duck and the rib eye. We dined here last weekend to celebrate a birthday party, and it has to be said that it was the best dining experience I've ever had. The inside looks like a converted firehouse with rustic farmhouse design. The entrances are draped in stunning blue velvet curtains. All the tables were sat comfortably, and a casual murmur of conversations echoed off the white walls. The vibes were truly moody and immaculate! The wait staff was incredibly attentive. They made sure our drinks were never empty and that we had all utensils needed for the array dishes brought to the table. The food was incredible and presented beautifully. I am a little disappointed that my pictures did not do the food justice. Their drinks were spectacular as well! I ordered the a fruity vodka cocktail called the Fit of Passion which was served with a side of champagne. While the drink was strong, the sweetness of the mix balanced it well! The chicken and stake were cooked perfectly. I am not a fan of fish so I did not try the cod, by my colleagues strongly recommended it. We also had a spinach tortellini that was the underdog of the night. It was my favorite of all the dishes! I would love to shout out Austin who caught wind that one of or party members had some food restrictions and went out of his way to accommodate her. Went for our 17th Anniversary. Had early reservations at 5 so had the place to ourselves. Ambiance was homey and comforting. Loved our server! Bubbly, great energy, and great recs! Great recommendations. Smoked Salmon an Irish bread, shared the House made Papardelle, hubs had the pork chop which was huge portions and I had the Black cod with cauliflower which was really yum. Where do I begin? The minute I stepped in, I felt the positive vibes of the staff. I started off with a few samples and each one was better than the previous. I must say although they were all good, two stood out. I was served hand pulled mozzarella with heirloom Tomatoes that were so fresh. I mean so fresh they could have just been picked. I had a sampling of their salmon in the form of lox, sooo good. Oh, I can't forget the bone marrow that was sinfully delicious! My choice for dinner was the Linguine with Clams, Spanish Chorizo ~ Smoked Tomato Butter. OMG, best ever. My friend had the tortellini. Let me say we didn't leave a crumb on our plates. Servers were very kind and the atmosphere was nice as well. Chicken Kabab - 6/10 A little dry, probably chicken breast, but it is seasoned well. It would be better if it wasn't as dry. Egg roles - 5/10 A weird flavor to them, don't know how to describe it but it's very odd, similar to blue cheese feeling. Falafel - 7.5/10 Very grainy in texture, but great flavor and the sauce on top definitely benefits it. Carnitas Taco w/ Guac, Cilantro, Onion, Cabbage, and Red Salsa - 8/10 Tastes just like in a typical Mexican restaurant but boujee, y'know? I definitely recommend it! Deep Fried Mac & Cheese - 8/10 Definitely recommend, a must try. The outside is crisp and compliments the mac & cheese very well like the crust on a usual mac & cheese. TALK ABOUT AN EXPERIENCE! Mulvaney's is such an amazing restaurant. I was taken on a date there last week and let me tell you, the food was so carefully curated and out of this world delicious. Our server, Eric D. was absolutely amazing. He knew all the fun facts about the food and drinks. He made the experience 10/10. Quick service. I love how they brought things out individually too. He was attentive and deserves a million raises. The ambiance was everything.
