By's is a relic of the burger drive-ins of the 60's and 70's. One thing that differentiated By's was to offer fish & chips as well. I've been eating here through the years and they still do great fish & chips and milk shakes. Nicely panko breaded and nicely browned tender fish. Perfectly salted rustic fries. Cole slaw and a variety of milkshakes, including creamsicle. Quick and friendly service. Ambiance? It's an old drive-in that they closed the front in with store doors! Was planning to go to ivers for lunch seafood but there isn't much options in the industrial district. Looks from the outside was uninspiring (next to waste management and lady bug barista). They also keep the same look since 1954. Definitely a destination location. Also for blue collar workers to grab a bite. I had the fish sandwich. Probably one of the best I had and reasonably price. I don't think I'd been to By's in forever. In this city where everything's changing constantly and so quickly, it's really wonderful to see some things can remain. Just walking in was great. There aren't many burger joints that smell like fresh grilled burgers. Their food was fresh, not greasy & not dry. Why?! Very good Milkshakes and Service, the Lady is very welcoming and friendly. Reasonably priced chicken strips and tasty Fish & chips. An old school Americana Diner, it's like walking into a time capsule, (which I thought was awesome.) Above average from your typical Burger/fish & chips joint. Wasn't real busy when I came here for lunch, but the food was good. I had the fish and chips, and milkshake. The place is a bit run down, but that's typical of these old burger joints. Two of the other customers in line were on a first name basis with the owners. The only real bummer is that this place is across the street from the transfer station, so it stinks outside. read more

Stopped in for a burger about 12:45pm. The place wasn't very busy, the lady at the counter was really nice and there was one person back running the grill. Food was made when you ordered it so it was hot! The fries were my favorite - they are the kind with the peels still on them on the end! Yum! Bye-bye to By's! Probably for all eternity. Sniff, sniff, sniff. What is that smell? Is it furniture polish? No. Sniff, sniff, sniff. Is it dirty socks? No, not that...sniff sniff sniff. Oh! It's a mop sitting in a bucket of dirty water in the corner over there. Bye bye to to those horribly salty onion rings, which are mostly just batter anyway. And the tarter sauce - was there anything in it besides mayonnaise? Didn't seem so. And adios to the "double deluxe burger" that came with skinny Burgerville-like patties (though I think Burgerville burgers taste much better, that's perhaps just a little of my pro-PDX bias creeping in here). My By burger came with a mooshy bun, mooshy tomato and mooshy onion. Mooshy mooshy mooshy! . However, not all is lost. The chocolate shake was actually very good, both in flavor and texture. And following the advice I got from "Tart" on SE Division in Portland, I blew into my hand to alleviate the shake-induced brain freeze. And you know what, it works! read more

I didn't know what to expect before eating at By's. I certainly knew it wouldn't be award winning... and I also knew it wouldn't be some spotless, classy joint... but I was SUPER impressed! Growing up my family would stop in at a small, sticky burger joint on the way home from ski trips. I loved the food. It couldn't compare to something Tom Douglas would create but I never expected it. It's been years and years since I've eaten at that place and my experience at By's yesterday reminded me of the good ol' days. The place was practically empty when we walked in and although it wasn't clean enough you could eat off the floor, it was very tidy and didn't smell at all. (like I had read in some reviews.) It was a toss up between a bacon burger and fish n chips...so we got both! The fish was super fresh, the batter was hot and crispy and the burger was awesome. If I worked in SODO I'd frequent this spot. The service was also great and it was better than I'd expected. read more

Great food? No, not by any stretch of the taste buds. A good greasy and satisfying treat every once in a while? Absolutely and that's why you come to a fish and chip joint like By's only on occasion to eat food you know you really shouldn't but love anyway. I can understand the lack of appreciation of this place because of the location, decor, seating, service and everything else. It's nothing to write home about but it's certainly got its appeal and for me, that means fish and chips served with an icy cold Coke. A cute, warm and friendly lil piece of WA's small town diners is here (not exactly relocated, but it's the feeling that counts). Local workers, as well as truckers, come by here often. Kim(?), the short, sweet and spunky looking asian cashier was warm and friendly. I was just passing by on the light rail and decided to do a short walk from SoDo station for some fries... these were like Dick's fries taken to the next level, yo! A bit more delicious and thicker cuts. All they're missing now is some Jailhouse Rock and Lollipop playing the airwaves. read more

My Oreo milkshake hit the spot -- and there had to have been at least 10 choices of shakes to choose from. I know people swear by Dick's, but I would take this place over them any day. This is place has fantastic burgers and a fish meal that to great. Fries are perfect, veggies are fresh, great burger buns. A bit divey, but not in a bad way at all, more like the place that your grandfather took you to after taking you for a haircut in Saturday morning when you were 8. It's been several years since I'd last eaten at By's. When I went in this past Friday I noticed some things just don't change. Fried mushrooms are made in house with their own batter and breading. Salads made to order with unevenly sized hand torn lettuce. (Know how I know? Because they weren't uniform in size nor were there any dry edges, which equals prepacked... :) Also forgot they don't bake their breadsticks, they're deep-fried. Solid lunch spot near my office. YUMMY! I've been by this place several times. So when I was craving a burger and saw it on Door Dash I decided to give them a try. I got the single cheeseburger, fries and a BUTTERSCOTCH milkshake. I didn't think anyone did butterscotch milkshakes anymore. It was amazing. Everything was amazing. The burger was perfectly cooked with fresh, crisp veggies (even after delivery), the fries thick cut skin on not greasy and the perfect amount of salt. Did I mention the milkshake? I used to eat here often in the early 80's when I worked downtown. I loved their burgers and fish. Sad I don't go by them anymore.

Fair Warning: Do not expect any life altering burger experiences here. The service was excellent. The woman was pleasant and welcoming so if this was just a customer service review then I would give them all the stars. I come from a land where I can get a juicy and fat beef burger that oozes with melty cheese, explodes with crispy lettuce and bacon, and crunches with every bite into its magical bun that is somehow crispy and soft all at the same time. Best of all this fabulous burger could be cooked to order - that's right, you can get it medium rare folks - and came with fries for the total sum of $6.00. Yes, that is not a typo. Unfortunately, By's double cheeseburger tastes and looks like the close, almost twin-like, brother of the BK Whopper. On the plus side, when you get your burger from By's it actually looks the BK Whopper when it is photographed as opposed to any Whopper you'd actually receive at BK. I did appreciate how everything at By's was made right there to order and found the veggies on the burger to be fresh and crispy. The fries were also good as well. Again, nothing earth shattering. I spent a little over 10 dollars for the burger, fries, and drink which basically makes it equivalent to fast food-ville. By's burger is just a burger. It does not leave you wanting more; however, it also shouldn't have you feeling all sad panda that you wasted your money because it is not a waste. If it is on your way and you want a burger, then go for it. However, if you are craving the kind of burger you will want to eat every day for the rest of your life I would keep on driving. read more

This place has always had really great customer service that's always kept me happy and coming back. The food is great and it's not super expensive. The burgers are always juicy , have tons of flavor and they're not small. Sometimes I get the fish and chips when I'm not feeling a burger and even those are delicious, they're hand breaded and crispy just the way I like em! When I got the super munchies and I'm tryna smack off on a big burger I get the King Louis but can never finish it. It's a half pound burger with bacon , ham and egg in it. This place has been around for 20plus years, it's old school with a menu full of greasy burgers and fried goodies next to a good old fashioned milk shake.. We had a shop lunch today and needed 14 Lou specials... she even recommend the time to pick up for best food and wait.. she wasn't off. my friend had to have a 32oz strawberry banana, he had it gown before we got back to the shop!!! Haha oh my! The fries are done from scratch I believe as they aren't the norm.. they served two sauces today fry sauce and tarter, hands down and not knocking the fry sauce but dang the tarter sauce is good. Not a complaint today from the crew so two thumbs up for that. My only downside for this review I can give is this place is it sits directly In front of a trash transfer station and I haven't really ever enjoyed eating here just because it stinks outside.. stay if you like they do the beat they can but I'm a take out guy. I only spoke of burgers today but I want to add the fish and chips are sizable plenty of fries and some slaw.. delish! read more
