I was in the mood for wine and light bites and ended up at BXCR Underground Wine Society in the sublevel of the Anaheim Packing District. The BXCR Underground Wine Society has a dim lit ambiance with a small bar area as well as a few tables. I think it would be a great place to catch up with friends over a drink or perhaps even a date. We managed to score 2 remaining seats at the bar area and Peter was our lovely bartender. He gave us menus to ponder over. He was very welcoming and knowledgeable with the wine selection. Whenever a flight is an option, I always go for the flight!! Commitment issues here!! The Wine Flights at BXCR compose of three 2-ounce pourings of your choosing from their list of white wine, rose and red wine. I felt like mixing it up on this particular evening so I asked Peter to surprise me with one from each category. White Wine: Lafond - 2016, Santa Rita Hills, CA. Chardonnay. Rose: Juliette - 2017, France. Syrah Grenache Blend Red Wine: Jameson Ranch - 2015, Napa, CA. Cabernet Sauvignon I really enjoyed my selections. It was a great way to start the night! Fun, cozy, small place for date night. They have a short list of cocktails that are fun to try. Their list of wines looked good but the painkiller caught my eye so I had to try it. Great ambiance, mediocre drinks, HORRIBLE service from male, tan complexion (maybe Pacific Islander) 5'0 (maybe 5'3) bartender. My girl friends and I stopped by for a late night drinks and bartender had an attitude before we even spoke to him. We asked what he recommended and he replied "a menu maybe" and turned his eye to a brown menu on the brown counter. We ordered a drink and he irritatedly whispered how we liked it (iced etc) and made the drink. 15 minutes passed and two male customer walked in and we watched as he provided the most pleasant service with a smile. My friend and I had been dying to come here, and I'm so glad we were able to before we got sheltered-in-place. The inside is really intimate and quiet; it would be a great place for a date. There is limited bar seating and several small tables set up along a stretch of booths. I wasn't sure what kind of drink I was feeling, so Peter asked me a couple of questions about what my usual tastes are. He suggested one of their wines and gave me a sample. I instantly loved it. Peter knew what I wanted in that moment before even I did! Amazing! That's the mark of a true bartender. He proceeded to do the same with my friend and explained to us that the most rewarding part of bartending is that "nod" customers give when they try a drink and really like it. You know, that nod of approval after taking a refreshing sip of something so delicious words can't begin to describe it? Yeah, that nod. I hate crowded places so BXCR is perfection as it's on the outskirts of the packing district so you can still people watch without being in the hustle n bustle of the other eateries. We ordered two of the three red flights they offered. The "locomotive" is 3, 2 oz pours of blends for 14$ and "first class" which is 3 pours of Pinot noirs for 14$. Most were ok but at $28 for both flights it was reasonable for tipsy night out. We both ended up liking the third Pinot noir best, from Oregon, so our alchy asses got a couple more glasses. Didn't get any of their lil bites cause we had just had dinner but they let us know that they're totally ok w bringing in food from elsewhere. They have an assortment of seating: tables, tall bar stools w tall tables, tall bar stools along the bar, stubby bar stools along the perimeter (no purse hooks) and chess tables if you're not feeling like being chatty w the ppl you came with -- jk a couple drinks will help w that. read more

Yelp ratings for BXCR are kind of all over the place but average out four stars. Here's what I think is four stars about it. Definitely a cozy little joint somewhat separated from the rest of the pleasant madness that is the Anaheim Packing District. Charming interior, nice vibe and it's quieter, with just a hint of speakeasy kind of separation, but that may be a stretch. But that's just folks casually observing. The Zinfandel I ordered was absolutely lovely, perfectly everything I desired. What wasn't four stars: new employee, and I had no problem with him fumbling around with the point of purchase system, and he seemed nice enough. A manager, or who I thought was one, walked through and briefly assisted. I ordered a cheese plate that came with 3 different cheeses, a few crackers in a plastic cup (not complaints about that), some preserves and a few pieces of dried fruit. At $27 for both I had no problem with that, and the guy even brought a water to my table that I requested. But the cheese plate came directly out of a refrigerator in front of me, wrapped in layers of saran wrap. Not only is cheese far better at room temperature, but the cheese was clearly past its serving prime. Hard, cold, slightly dried brie is not a pretty thing, nor is cold and slightly hardened blue cheese. Unwrapping it on the counter in front of customers that included me was a downer. Please, even if it's subpar, do that in the kitchen. Annoyed as I was, a young lady came in, ordered a drink and went out in the main dining area with it. Out runs new employee to drive her back inside because there's a rule about that. Hmm, why not ask, as you did me? I replied, oh, so can't take glassware out in the main area? Guess that's the case. Awkward moment for her, awkward moment for me. She left without drinking most of it. Weird. Who's watching watching what's going on here, because if it's easy for a customer to see, why can't someone who is really responsible and should know better? In the end I savored the marvelous zin, and, eh, crunched and munched on cheese that should have been served room temperature or not at all. They can do better. read more

I was handing my ID over to her and after she verified my age, she just threw it across the bar like it was a piece of trash and continued mad-dogging us until our drinks were served. I was nothing but polite to her so I didn't understand where her ugly hostility came from. We here here on October 22nd, around 7pm. Needless to say I won't be returning here. She didn't even have the decency to apologize she just transferred our order over to the other bartender and had him serve us. Here on a Sunday evening out with my mans for a drink and we ran into this gem. I'm a Spicy BLOODY MARY kind of girl, so I was very pleased to see it on the menu. I have been eyeing this place forever, but it always seemed dead or not open when I was around, so I never went in, until my last weekend afternoon visit. Had a cocktail at the Hammer Bar then decided to change venue and come here. The place is cozy and more intimate than the Hammer Bar, since it is tucked away and enclosed. I decided to have a Mai Tai, sine they are doin it the right way with lime and orgeat, and without a bunch of extra juices. I came in for wine and ended up getting a gin cocktail, The Bee's Knees, of which I was semi-hesitant to choose. Xyla was awesome in that she catered to the pallet when creating our cocktails, and made sure to hit the mark w/tart vs sweet. For wines we had red and white flights, also sparking flight for me, and picked a few individual ones. Most of them were very nice, but again I am not a big fan of wines, they all taste pretty much the same to me. Hubby loves reds, especially Bordeaux, the ones he tried were tasty. Love this wine bar and decor. This is one of the quieter establishments inside the anahiem packing house and it's a lovely spot to enjoy a nice glass of wine. There is bar seating or separate tables if you want something more intimate. They do have a chess and checkers table too if you want to play a little game while enjoying your drink. They offer wine and just a few beers. The wine selection is large but not too overwhelming. Plus they provide great service in helping select a wine that you will enjoy. They do also offer wine flights which allowed me to tried 3 different samples of rose. They offer food, but I believe only on the weekends. My friend and I came in on a monday night after dinner just wanting to grab a couple cocktails and were met with the most unprofessional service we've encountered. We both ordered our drinks and my old fashioned came in a timely manner; however my friend's New York Sour dragged 8-10minutes after. Therefore, it resulted in a longer wait time of my friend getting her drink. We are understable of waiting since my friend and I were catching up; however, he grabbed a slice of pizza from the back to give to his wife (who was also sitting at the bar) while we were still waiting for our drink...They also turned on the max volume of the music--with no care in the world, while we were trying to have a conversation. We were wanting to stay for a couple drinks; however with the blaring music and lack of consideration of guests, we left as fast as we could. BXCR is tucked into a corner by Cook's Chapel. The dark wood motif gives it an air of sophistication. They have a wine dispenser that keeps bottles fresh. I ordered one of the aperitifs, Jardesca Prosecco ($10). It was refreshing and different. It reminded me of a wine spritzer. The bartender was really nice and let us sit, while eating food from nearby The Kroft. Some places won't let you bring outside food in even if you intend on buying drinks (I'm looking at you Kettlebar). Anyway, we had our food and we were able to grab drinks. Thought I'd give this an updated review since coming back. Whereas previously this bar used to have open-air access to the rest of the Packing House, now there is a wall separating the space from the Packing House at large. Overall, I feel it adds to a more intimate feeling to the experience. The new look of the bar is also accompanied by a greater emphasis on cocktails (as opposed to just wine), all of which are quite good. There are some really good, unique off-menu cocktails typically if you ask the bartender for them. The only downside now, with the new changes, is that they did away with the chess boards--which certainly added some charm. read more

Hidden amongst the underground of Packing House you will find The Boxcar! Wile the area itself isn't huge it's defiantly more so made to have a lounge feel to it which I definitely enjoyed because it was just that cozy cool feeling of being in an underground lounge. They have a huge variety of wine and a few beers however they don't really have much for food offerings but being that your inside the Packing House there's a ton of offerings around and the bar staff said your allowed to bring food into Boxcar from other places so that definitely takes care of that problem. Kinda ironic that I visit this awesome wine bar on a night where I was drinking beer generally when that happen I try to stick to the same drinks. We ordered the 1888 it was a delicious craft brew that is brewed by Anaheim Brewery and definitely something I would get again. During our visit it was rather dead but for a Sunday night after a Ducks loss that was fine with me. The girl they had working was super nice and knowledgable about the wines and beers as well as anything related to the Boxcar which definitely made for an awesome experience. This is a really cool little place and I defiantly will be making this a part of any visit to Packing House! read more

Friendly and informative, that's how I characterize my experience here, and on the phone prior to my first visit last night. I called and spoke with Neomi who was exceptional in her phone manner and providing me with the 411. Sadly, they don't have a chef on duty Sundays or Mondays, so the charcuterie plate is unavailable. She suggested, albeit more expensive, the new Italian place for that because outside food is welcome even if their chef is on duty. That's exactly what we did. See pics. The cost effective option is to order flights of wine from the menu. Four combinations for red, three for white. An interesting variety, the wines represent Argentina, New Zealand, Austria, Germany, France (Burgundy, Bordeaux, Languedoc-Roussillon and Rhone), and the USA. The setting is smaller than the pics on Yelp might suggest. Nonetheless, it was not crowded on a rainy Sunday evening around 7pm. We sat at a table with an integrated chess or checker board. The host told us to move the pieces and make ourselves comfortable. One flight, the Alpine for whites, required a substitute, but having no point of reference we didn't mind. Comfortable? Absolutely! It was last call, roughly 9:20, before we knew it! All six wines went well with the four cheeses and four cured meats we imported from down the way. I would definitely go back again. read more

Mr first review of 2016!!! I came here on a Wednesday night with my brother and cousin and it was not packed at all at 6pm. One thing that I love about this place is you can go to the packing house and order your food at the different vendors and come to this place and eat it there, of course along with buying g a drink. Gotta show some kind of courtesy! We ordered all white wines from their happy hour menu. The blonde lady that was serving us was very friendly and so adorable. She told us little facts here and there about the wine that we were drinking. I love the decor of this place. Very modern and I live the chess boards as tables.
