Way overpriced. Food wasn't bad but overall not great. The foie gras was just oddly unset. I don't know if they poached it or cured it but it was poorly sliced and had been sitting out for way way too long. Felt extremely rushed besides that. We arrive at 8:30 and our entrees were gone by 9:30. Also, the waitress dropped dessert menus while two people were still eating their entrees?? That's inappropriate and made my guests feel as though they were eating slowly. Overall mediocre food and terrible service. If not for the absurdly high forced 20% gratuity I don't think much of a tip would have been left at all. Edit: It dawned on me (and I triple checked) - absolutely nowhere does it state that an automatic 20% tip would be added to the bill for parties of any size, simply doing it without any warning is unprofessional and wrong. read more

My boyfriend and I went up to the Catskills on a one night trip right after Christmas and got dinner and drinks here. From start to finish we had such an amazing time. The hosts/managers are very accommodating and don't miss a beat. We sat by the fire with a hot cider drink to warm up first, which was awesome! Then we sat down at Steve Buscemis table, and proceeded to order drinks and appetizers. The bartender makes the best Negroni I've tasted. Kudos!! We ate the mussels, the trout rilettes, this cold seafood salad my boyfriend still brings up, we also got the mussels. Everything was 5 stars! 2 thumbs up! We split the short rib and it was the best short rib I've had in a long time. We then had some digestives and the manger Eddie P was so nice to let us try some sips of the after dinner drink menu. We stayed here one night and dined as well. The dining room is cute just like the rest of the resort. The dining experience fell flat. Our waitress was nice and good but couldn't explain what the evenings vegetable dish was. We ordered the cheese plate and someone basically plopped it on the table without any explanation of which cheese was what( plus, this is nitpicking but the desc said honeycomb and there was no honeyxomb on the cheese plate). My kale salad was perfectly fine and my husband's scallops were actually very, very good. Overall, disappointing experience but go for a drink in the bar and get tended to by Roman, who was a real treat and provided us the best hospitality while we were here. read more

Butterfield is definitely a romantic Hudson Valley restaurant! The ambience really makes the whole experience, and my boyfriend and I wish we had stayed at the Inn itself. The food was great, but I would not recommend the scallop entree. The duck entree with the confit tamale however rocked our WORLD! You need to get this dish when you visit. My new husband and I enjoyed a fantastic dinner at the Butterfield. From the beautifully renovated space, the warm and calm atmosphere, to the attentive and friendly wait staff what more can you ask for? The menu rotates to include fresh and inventive meals that are sourced from the surrounding area. The food was so delicious I wanted to lick my plate clean. The hotel and surrounding grounds are also lovely. Hip, trendy place with games inside and out. Pricey menu, but well worth it. My sister made reservations at Butterfield for the 4 of us. It seemed like a good, covid-safe choice because its outside, sitting around your own cauldron to keep warm. The setting is lovely and is the main draw I think. The management seemed a little wonky because despite the reservation, other people kept getting sat before we did and it was odd since we got there and it was empty. Also, we had inquired prior about getting a table inside for dinner after drinks and apps by the cauldron but were told it was a packed house that night. But when we went inside to use the restroom on multiple occasions the whole place was empty aside from two tables. Again, strange. But cauldron-side, the service was good, except we did have to ask for every lil thing like small plates and silverware. I mean, that should've been a given since all the appetizers are meant for sharing and we ordered just about all of them. They were quite good, especially the cauliflower wings and shishito peppers. Bratworst was good too. The drinks were ok. Nothing special. I wasnt drinking alcohol so they made me a mocktail version of one of their drinks and it was fine. The hot chocolate was good. We had considered ordering dinner by the cauldron but it got too cold and we were put off by the issues of earlier and it is quite expensive too, so we chose to go to a small place down the street for dinner (see review for The Roost). I might return to Butterfield in the future because the setting is so nice, but I hope they fix the managment issues to make the place worth it. read more

We had a lovely time at Butterfield. We were staying at the Inn and went to the outdoor Cauldron Bar the first night - and we were plenty warm with the fireside chairs. Drinks were fabulous and food was perfect for outdoor dining. Our second night we ate inside at Butterfield and enjoyed the energy in the room and felt very socially distant from other guests. Food and drinks were great indoors as well - a bit of a fancier menu when you eat inside but we enjoyed the fish - both the tuna tartar and the trout. We stayed at Hasbrouk House for a couple days a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Mauricio at the bar is incredibly knowledgeable and made top notch cocktails, and was great to chat with. Our server at Butterfields was Ryan, who was really fun and on point. We had the cauliflower appetizer (practically like General Tso's style, without the breading), the gnudi (huge dish!) and the duck (delicious - and apparently from 'next door'). Beautiful grounds and very welcoming, spacious dining room. Food is way too self impressed--over priced and skimpy. Ceviche was insufficiently cured- not very acidic. Scallop entree was tasty but had 3 scallops only. Vegetarian entree had no protein, just a very very few baby vegetables artfully placed amid splashes of colorful purées.Over $90 for these 3 dishes with a bottle of water. We called to make a reservation and left a message. We assumed they were busy and so we arrived for dinner despite not getting a call back. The doors to the restaurant were open, so we walked in and no one was around. We finally walked back into the kitchen and came across who we asked if she was the manager and she said yes. We told her we are here for dinner and she was extremely abrupt and rude, letting us know the restaurant is closed, only open on Thursday through Sunday. Without getting into details of her attitude and lack of customer service skills, we left. It this is the management of Butterfield's, I do not see how they will be successful up here in the Catskills. Many restaurants to choose from, local people enjoy dining out too. You don't treat people like we were treated and expect us to return . Most businesses up here appreciate local patrons and treat us accordingly. read more

We recently had a fantastic dinner at Butterfield, one of the best we've had in the area to date. We made a Saturday night reservation and planned to come by early to take advantage of the outside patio (Butcher & Bar) for some pre-dinner drinks, live music, and sunset. We also noted the full bar area and living room which are both intimate and cozy that would make great spaces to lounge around in once summer disappears. We were seated promptly inside after being offered our choice of inside or outside tables. The menu is perfectly sized and completely seasonal so it's always changing based on what's available. We ordered cocktails - one on the menu and one off - and both were made really well! With our drinks, we munched on AMAZING bread slathered in butter and for dinner, we started with a corn and tomato salad, shared the duck and lamb entrees, and finished with a perfect homemade corn ice cream dessert. The portion sizes were generous and plated beautifully and everything was SO delicious. Really good food coupled with awesome and friendly service in a beautiful and comfortable space...there's nothing more we could ask for on a Saturday night. After we finished up, we hung out playing connect four in the living room/study area and left happy and full. Butterfield really showcases all the good stuff the Hudson Valley has to offer. Praise for Butterfield for participating in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, but our experience this year was certainly leas than stellar. While my husband enjoyed his salad, my butternut squash soup was cloyingly sweet. We both had the braised beef which was devoid of any flavor, even salt, as were the miniature steamed vegetables. The flourless chocolate cake for dessert was good. Best thing about the meal was my glass of Sancerre. Such a lovely room and attentive service deserves better food. read more

Extremely disappointed. We waited 10 minutes to be greeted. Our party felt rushed as the server wanted to take orders for drinks, apps and entrees all at once. The prices on the menu didn't match the receipt. Two guests in our party ordered manhattans which were 15 dollars and came out shaken. The service was terrible, our server made us pass our food down the table and never checked in with us. The entrees were completely overpriced. Not worth a 45 min drive. Had a nice night out on the patio at Butterfield, the Hasbrouck House inn's onsite restaurant. Can only speak to outdoor dining, but being able to park on premises and explore the HH grounds before walking to dinner is a great treat for those not staying at the inn. This is surely a place that takes safety and cleanliness seriously. The small menu, though a bit limited, makes decisions simple and provides ample time for parties to actually enjoy one another's company. Smaller parties necessary to eat outdoors, but inside there was a larger group enjoying a nice birthday celebration. Vegetables featured heavily in all dishes and done well. Servers are fantastic and friendly, and dinner out back in the garden on a nice day or evening simply cannot be missed. Excited to spend a couple nights at the Hasbrouck House for a staycation soon, check out Butterfield's sister dining, Butcher Bar, and catch movies this summer under their big tent - all of which I found out about from dining here one night. So many servers though such lacking service. They clearly want to provide you with a special evening but awkward timing between courses, choppy follow up on timing drinks to meal, and strange hesitation to clear finished drinks and plates from the table make for a less than optimal experience. It's a matter of training. They are fussy at all the wrong moments and they seem kind of stressed. The main dining room feels a touch like a church basement gathering hall - drab with unmatched feeling furniture. My wife and went to Butterfield Wednesday night and it was an experience to forget. We arrived and stood and waited for a hostess for over 5 minutes by ourselves. Not a big deal but kind of annoying start. We were then seated and proceeded to wait again (common theme). Our waters were poured but we didn't see a server for over 15 minutes. We finally waved down someone who responded "oh you havent got your drinks yet?" We hadn't ordered or even been welcomed. The server apologized (sort of) and said he was the ONLY server for the entire restaurant. We politely understood and ordered cocktails, and waited again. Another 15 minutes waiting and our drinks arrived. I've never seen cocktails made (old fashioned and a negroni) in which ice went to the top of the glass but only half was filled. That's simply not how you make/present a cocktail and thus makes it watered down. We then waited AGAIN..... We ordered two apps with the idea we'd order mains later. The cauliflower tasted like someone warmed up a bag of frozen trader joes tempura cauliflower and the steak tartare was one of the least aesthetically pleasing dishes I've seen in 10-15 years. It looked like someone pulled off the plastic of a package of ground beef and threw it on a piece of lettuce. There was zero seasoning or even salt on it and it was easily the worst tartare we've ever had. It was offensive. We continued to wait, and wait and wait. Since our server (who I felt for being by himself despite him kind of sucking at his job) never came by....ONCE..to see how things were....and after 20 minutes, we decided to just give him our card and leave. We were then told that the computer and wifi were down. We waited AGAIN......and got our bill for $75 for two disgusting apps and half made cocktails. I get it....its covid...its hard for restaurants, but this was embarrassingly bad. If you are going to charge $16 + per item, the service and actual food cannot be this bad. I haven't written a bad yelp review in over 10 years but had to. This was horrible and the restaurant should be embarrassed. If you don't have enough staff, then don't allow people to come in and have a horrific experience. We will never come back. read more

We could not have asked for a better evening! We were out celebrating a dear friends 99th birthday. From the moment we walked in the door a fuss was made over our Molly. The maître d' was friendly and welcoming and most accommodating. Butterfield has a real treasure in this man. The atmosphere was warm and cozy with sumptuous furnishings and a fire burning in the lounge fireplace. Our waiter was knowledgable about the menu and attentive without being intrusive. The food was AMAZING. My short ribs were fall apart perfection and my husband has not stopped talking about the hay smoked rabbit. If you can find the room, get dessert! My boyfriend and I had a lovely dinner at Butterfield. We discovered this restaurant after looking through the listings for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. It was dark and rainy when we arrived, so I couldn't make out the grounds too much. But the setting of the restaurant inside the old inn was very inviting and warm. We were seated quickly in a cozy romantic dining room lit by candles. The service was excellent, and I was very happy with everything I ordered. The squash bisque soup, gnudi with butternut squash and mushrooms, and the pear and currant crisp for dessert. Everything was delicious and full of flavor. It was overall an excellent dining experience, and I feel we got our money's worth with the restaurant week menu. After having a stressful week I had the utmost pleasure of staying at The Hotel and starting out the evening with Lauren the GM behind the stick pouring the perfect Gin Martini. So amazing from start to finish - we shared a bunch of small plates, shisitos and duck liver pate and loved it all. This restaurant was the highlight of our dining experience in upstate NY! Everything from the decor, staff, and food was superb! The menu is seasonal and changes daily as per what's fresh. My partner and I enjoyed the green garlic soup appetizer, vegetable mosaic entree, and rhubarb mousse dessert. We were delighted by how each of the flavors in every dish complimented one another and was fuss free. No pretentious silverware or sculptural elements on each plate - just delicious food presented with love and care. Nothing tasted too salty or overly cooked. Was the perfect texture. As residents of Manhattan we dine often and largely at the latest restaurants. Butterfield can easily hold its own against Manhattan's finest. One regret we had was not having a reservation to stay in the accompanying hotel, Hasbrouck House. The property is jaw dropping gorgeous - like a night at the NoMad Hotel - if it existed in Upstate NY. Will definitely make a reservation next time to complement the amazing meal we had. read more

If you are looking for real 'local' flavor, do not go here. I went to the bar at Butterfield's for a cocktail after listening to music at their pub. The vibe and atmosphere???really awful but i chalked it up to a busy night. The tipping point for me was when I got the bill from the bartender at the Butterfields indoor bar. The charge was for 12 dollars plus 2 for a martini. First of all, that was weird, second, a 14 dollar martini IN STONE RIDGE??? Btw, they are so not into service, that each time I post this review the yelp team kicks me off. most places who pay attention to yelp respond with some sort of message saying that they are sorry, they will do better, they are interested in people's opinion. After all the exceptional reviews, it was truly shocking what a miserable time I had at Butterfield. Their upscale dining reputation is laughable. The parsnip soup was screaming for salt. Screaming I really do say. Isn't it deplorable when you order a dish that says it comes with mushroom ravioli and it's only one ravioli!!! I thought I was being pranked. An actual prank. Where the f is Ashton Kutcher. You can come out now!!! The cocktails are over $15 which I'm like lol am I at a resort sitting by the pool. Piña coladas anyone? To be clear I would have been happy to spend that much if our server didn't ruin the experience. Just because we are younger looking doesn't mean you have to dismiss us like we are five. I'm eight. Just kidding. I think if the servers could have treated us with respect and maybe the quality of the food was rethought I wouldn't have a sour moldy milk taste in my mouth every time I think about Butterfield. In the hudson valley this is as good as it gets. The menu is full of fresh, inventive and very tasty food, all culled from the surrounding area. We started with complimentary sourdough rye bread with butter made in house, it was a fantastic start to a meal. Then we had a lamb tartare and radish salad with chicken jus, for mains we had the aged duck and ribeye steak, everything was beautifully presented and tasted incredible. To be able to take great ingredients and amplify and elevate them in the way this place does makes you realize you are in the hands of a great chef. I don't even know where to start, they couldn't accomodate my friend with food allergies, the pours of wine were very insulting for the price, the waiters are not experienced, again definetely not a good experience for the price. If you ask for extra bread they charge you, limited pre-fix menu with an appetizer sold out at 730PM. And the weirdest thing is I've never been to a restaurant that was skimpy with salt and pepper. We went to Butterfield for dinner the other night and were excited to try it. Our server was nice at first. We ordered cocktails and 2 small plates from the menu. After about 30 minutes, we realized she probably forgot to put in the order for the cocktails so flagged her down to ask. We then repeated the cocktail order again as she didn't remember what we ordered. We received the cocktails and my husbands was not good. Tasted like straight tequila and was watered down and didn't have much flavor. We ordered our main dishes with her at some point as well. After another 15-20 minutes, we realized she probably forgot about the small plates we ordered. Several tables that sat after us had received their cocktails and food. After another ten minutes, our main dishes came out and we told the staff member that we never received the small plates we ordered. The server came by and apologized but at that point, we were annoyed. They offered us a free dessert but we didn't really feel like waiting any longer. Main dishes were pretty good... we had the bucatini and the venison. For the price of the dishes, I would definitely expect that service would be a little better. It looked like they were having a busy night so we would have understood if the server came over to explain that the kitchen was backed up, etc. However, it was pretty clear that she just forgot to put in half of our order. read more

As "locals," we are thrilled to have a high quality dining experience in town and are willing to work with Butterfield by being patient to give them time get all the kinks out. We have gone twice and seen significant improvement. Six of us went Saturday night and had the tasting menu. "Radar," the chef, was excited by the food he prepared and explained to us where he got the local ingredients. Our meal consisted of all of the appetizers on the menu plus a main dish. When we sat down we found on the table there a piece of wood on which sat beautiful French breakfast radishes served in the French way, with creamy butter and coarse sea salt. We started out with an amuse bouche of an amazing corn soup, followed by a salad made of a touch of lots of different local produce. This was followed by grits with bits of smoked trout and lamb sausage--my husband who doesn't eat grits loved this dish. There was a dish of heirloom tomatoes--the taste was outstanding (alas, as locals we have lots of these, but I imagine for others the range of flavors in the tomatoes will be a real treat). An unusual dish followed-- "heart and bone" which was a large bone stuffed with bits of sautéed heart--tasted almost like foie gras--quite interesting. Our main dish was the goat--something I love which isn't often found in restaurants. The meat was spiced with cumin and served with turnips. Dessert was shared portions of a peanut butter pie which was light and tasty and a chocolate cake. We also had a wine pairing with the meal. My own feeling is I can forgive problematic service, but not problematic food. The food is definitely not problematic! It was interesting and made great use of local produce. Radar told us where the food was from, incredible micrograms, for example, from a local grower who is devoting his greenhouse to the restaurant, etc. It would be nice if Butterfield celebrated this more, perhaps putting up a blackboard as other local restaurants do, listing their local purveyors. I was sitting facing the room so was able to watch the service at other tables. While during my first visit on the second week they were open the service staff were confused about where to bring food, this time the staff seemed more confident. There are still issues with service that need to be worked out. I agree with the other reviewers that the staff needs training. The table next to ours had to wait quite a while for their appetizers and our used wine glasses were not cleared as quickly as we would have liked--but this should improve as the staff gains experience. And the kitchen might need to work on their system for sequencing the food. Tamy and Philippe, the owners of the restaurant, are determined to work out these kinks. They were asked to run the restaurant with barely 3 months to plan, which didn't give them as much time as was really needed to learn the space and learn how to tap into the employment market. We suggested to them that they need to reduce the noise level in the room and they said they were aware of it and were going to have someone help them with this. I believe they truly want to learn what the community wants from our new local restaurant and would like to make this a destination not just for the guests at Hasbrouck House, but for the locals. We look forward to going back next month to see the improvements--I'm sure the experience will just keep getting better. read more
