We had 8 PM reservations this evening for Buttercup. It was clear the staff works as a strong team moving guests and dishes efficiently. The place was very busy, but the staff kept everything moving which was refreshing. The menu was fairly short but everything on it came out looking great. This was our first meal out in three months and our expectations were truly exceeded. Reservations are suggested, as they are unable to fully seat the dining area due to social distancing requirements. I had the softshell crab appetizer which was quite good, and the braised beef short ribs with homemade egg noodles that were excellent.My girlfriend had the mussels in green curry appetizer and the pan fried scallops which she thought were some of the best she's had in years. We have been here twice so far and have enjoyed everything we have ordered. We are already familiar with their other restaurant, The Farmhouse in Needham, so our expectations were pretty high. On our first visit we shared the Charcuterie board and I had Fish Tacos which were very good. This past Saturday we shared the Beet and Goat Cheese salad and I had the Lobster Risotto. You know that famous restaurant scene in "When Harry Met Sally?" That was me. For real though trying to control the food moans and utter bliss I was experiencing from every bite I took. Perfection was sought through the artistic rendition of culinary creativity and gratefully achieved. Both of my parents are chefs, my brother went to the Culinary Institute of America. I've eaten at the best restaurants in Paris and had many memorable dishes in many countries. I can't say I've EVER had an ENTIRE MEAL that made me forget my troubles and lose myself in every bite I took. This restaurant MADE their own cocktail sauce. It was so delectable, that for the first time in my life, I put cocktail sauce on every oyster and relished the experience. I've had a lot of oysters in my life. The CORNBREAD! OMG. Oh God I swear I'm not exaggerating. I bit into a piece with a smear of the ricotta spread and lavender honey and continued to try to control the noises of utter joy coming out of my body. I was so happy I remember thinking the world could end then and there and I'd be ok with that. The cornbread was perfectly moist without being cakey and still tasted like cornbread. The beets were heavenly. A mix of different types of beets over a generous spread of well whipped ricotta. So refreshing and ecstasy generating with each bite. I ordered the Tiger Shrimp Risotto with Poisson Sauce and Chili Flakes. I'm getting a tingle down my spine recalling every bite of this dish. It came in a warm dish hot off the stove. It's very easy to screw up risotto and shrimp. They didn't. The shrimp were plump and juicy, the risotto was cooked just right and the SAUCE. Oh I had my reservations about ordering risotto with a sauce but it was heavenly. I was full halfway through but I didn't care I kept eating. There was also fresh spinach which I loved. This is the second time my family gave Buttercup a chance. We made a reservation for our family of 4, several weeks in advance to celebrate a major work milestone. We arrived 15 minutes early to an empty restaurant and were seated next to a smelly toilet. I asked to be moved twice and was told they "were full and had no additional seating options." Interesting that the only Black family was seated next to their toilets. There was absolutely no reason why we couldn't be re-seated. I have been four separate times and they have been fairly consistent with each visit. The service has always been very attentive which is nice but the food is very mediocre. The first time we went they had a hardy beef pasta meal that was incredible but that was since removed. Since then the other three visits I have had the halibut and truffle fries which has been alright each time. It certainly is not as good as the original pasta dish but there truly is nothing to complain about. Other than that it offers a nice open atmosphere that is not too loud and perfect for a date night spot! Overall I would recommend but I hope they one day bring that dish back! read more

Food is great and value priced for a local restaurant. Typically too busy on weekends so midweek eves have yielded good seating. Don't like the outside seating with the idling vehicles waiting for the four corners lights. So avoid rush hour and drive time dining. Otherwise a great local spot! read more

I've ate here about 5 times and each time I find the food prepared on point, flavorful and divine. The fish was cooked perfectly, the truffle fries were delicious and I am beyond words on the braised ribs...simply incredible. Wonderful atmosphere in the middle of Natick. Buttercup is a restaurant you'd find in a super cool city not your typical suburban Massachusetts restaurant. Once you enter your transported into a new American farm to table cute / chill bistro. The service is spot on enough attention, not feeling like they're rushing and they come around just when you need service. The food is exactly what you'd expect in a farm to table - fresh and hand made. The drinks menu was so interesting it was hard to choose one (I was driving so seconds was not an option). Limited menu, small portions, very pricey, outdoor seating on a fairly busy state roadway with a good bit of traffic. Those were the negatives but the food made up for all of the short comings and then some. Lump crab cake starter ($14) was tasty though the golden raisins added little to the dish other than a bit of contrasting color. The scallops (4 sea scallops for $34) were perfectly prepared and the accompanying sweet potato purée complemented the dish well. The mushroom risotto ($26) was exquisite, rice cooked al dente, mushrooms were silky smooth and full earthy flavored, just the right amount of cheese to accent without overpowering the dish. What a fabulous place! A friend recommended it to me and couldn't have been more thrilled. The ambiance, service, quality of the food, execution were all top notch! Our waitress Claire was attentive, friendly, funny and extremely knowledgeable about how things are prepared. Had the lamb meatballs, tiger shrimp ceviche, beet salad and halibut dinner. New Natick and finally got out to explore downtown with the better half. We had a terrific meal with one of the best pieces of halibut I have ever eaten. Very classy and hip vibe which is not what I was expecting for downtown Natick so if your looking for cool place for dinner with friends no need to travel. This is a very popular restaurant and the food definitely speaks for itself. Wonderfully fresh and well presented dishes, the halibut was incredible. Gluten free apps & desserts are slim and lacking. Last night was our second visit and service was poor again. Our waitress barely attended to us and never asked how our entrees were. We needed to flag her down for drinks. Water also wasn't filled timely and we asked any staff that passed our table. When she did come by our table she was a bit clumsy hitting a glass when removing dishes or knocking into the table. I don't know if they don't have enough staff to properly attend diners but at an upscale restaurant like this, it isn't acceptable. It's also SO noisy that you can't even hear your dinner guests. i had dinner at the restaurant last night and I was extremely disappointed. 3 of us ordered the lobster roll and we all thought it was the worst lobster roll we've ever had. the lobster meat was orange, barely filled the roll, and didn't taste very good. not sure why but something in the taste was off. having lived all my life in the Boston area, I know what to expect in a lobster roll. the only reason I can give is that the chef has never had a lobster roll in new england! should not be on the menu. i don't expect to return. read more

What a neat little find in Natick. Aside from my never fail chick fil a I feel like there really aren't much good restaurants around this area.. until now! When you walk inside you immediately get that homey but with a modern touch feel. You're immediately greeted with freshly baked bread and butter. Use all of your might to resist because the bread is just scrumptious and you'll want to eat it all. I got the fish tacos with grilled fish instead of fried and it was the star of the night. The fish is very fresh and tender, cooked just right, topped with a yummy aioli that's the perfect touch. I'd definitely get this if you're into fish. Truffle fries are also a winner- must get! We also tried the pulled pork and ceviche which I must say were a bit disappointing. The pork was not pulled at all and was a bit hard and just flavorless. Ceviche was drowning in the sauce that was lacking in flavor and it was just a bit hard to even find the shrimp. Parking can be a bit tricky to find but the back street seems to have lots of street parking. We were seated quite fast on a busy Saturday night without reservations. Came all the way from NYC and decided to give this place a go since the reviews were so good. We did not make a reservation bc it's a Thursday evening, so I didn't think we needed too. None the less we walked up to inform them we were interested in a table for two and the gentleman that was originally scheduling us to eat informed us it would be a long wait. We didn't mind, he was very pleasant. Then all of a sudden a women walks up and takes over and doesn't allow him to continue processing our table for 8pm. She said "wait what are you doing!? (To the male reservationist) and said "we have to see if we even have room for them." Mind you, the original reservationist had already looked and told us that we would not be able to eat there, for another couple of hours, & we were OK with this. We could tell she didn't want us there. I look around and notice we're The only Black people attempting to eat at this restaurant. The woman was not pleasant to us, her energy was horrible, and she made us feel bad about even wanting to eat at this restaurant. So we continued with her initially, made the reservation for 8 PM, walked away and thought about how she acted with us, and decided that we did not want to eat at a restaurant that was not pleasant to us. I feel she wasn't pleasant to us, because we were black, and we were the only Black people trying to eat there. She also was not pleasant to the original reservationist, who also happened to be black. I'm from New York City, so I wasn't expecting this. Driving through town I see Black Lives Matter signs everywhere, so I was very hopeful that this will be a pleasant experience as this is my first time in this part of Natick. Her demeanor was horrible. Her energy was foul. If you are African-American, black, or of color, stay away.. unless you have tougher skin than us. We did not end up eating there, we decided to walk back and cancel our reservation for 8 PM, simply bc of her whole demeanor towards us. When we were finally acknowledged the service from there on was quite good. The bread and olive oil arrives. The bread is soft inside and outside. Over proofed and under baked. Disappointing. The food was amazing. Appetizer and mains. This is why you come here. The prices are reasonable for the quality. The wine prices are obscene. One at $42, one at $48 and all the rest at $50 and up. Buttercup is an amazing place that managed to survive building a new, French country kitchen-style layout within an old building, then being hit with the COVID pandemic. Reduced hours and takeout seem to have been the keys. They are now slowly increasing their hours, while maintaining takeout. The staff is pleasant and hard-working and clearly enjoys what they are doing, which is serving a top-notch, French-influenced, new American farm-to-table dining experience. For a town short on dining options, Buttercup is a welcome addition to the Natick scene. We went as a group of six - all for the first time - on a surprisingly busy Wednesday night. There was outdoor seating available, but our reservation was for an indoor table, not too far from the open kitchen. Tall ceilings, exposed brick and manufactured hardwood floors gave the space a warm but modern industrial feel. I did find the room a bit too noisy for casual conversation across a round table, but that was truly the only negative I could think of. Cocktails, while a little pricey, were tasty and creatively served. We split a pair of charcuterie boards, which was just right for six people. For an entree, I ordered the fettuccine and shrimp. The shrimp were huge and the homemade pasta cooked perfectly. The crisp peas and tomato-saffron sauce were an ideal complement. The sauce had a creamy texture but was far healthier than a cream-based sauce. My wife and one of our friends had the fish tacos, which, in my wife's words, were "Baja-worthy". Three soft tacos barely contained a generous piece of fish topped with pickled onions, pico de gallo and a tangy chipotle sauce. Another friend had the salmon, which was perfectly prepared. Ditto for the Rigatoni Bolognese. Portion sizes were just right given our appetizer, and the presentation of each dish made us sigh before digging in. Given the seasonal nature of farm-to-table cuisine, we'll need to hurry back before the Summer menu goes away. read more

Buttercup is exactly what Natick has been needing: an inviting restaurant where you can grab a drink or a meal with friends or on a date, and of course, delicious food. On a Friday night, Buttercup was packed (be sure to make reservations) and the food was worth the wait. I was excited to try out this restaurant because Natick doesn't have another one like it. Service was a little slow, but once we did order, the food came out quickly. Almond three of us, we had the Campanelle Bolognese, Beef Short Ribs over homemade pasta, and the vegetarian risotto. For dessert, we had the brownie with vanilla ice cream. Everything was delicious and fresh. The presentation was beautiful with addition of micro greens on the entrees. Fun location and ambiance, decent food, expensive. Downtown Natick definitely is starving for a place like this. The outdoor seating is great and gets shaded for dinner. Indoor is nice and clean with exposed brick and lots of white tones. Feels peaceful but still vaguely farmhousey. The food was good, not great. So-so cheese board. Good burger, great truffle fries, and great veggie risotto. It's expensive though... the beers and wines are pricey and so are the entrees. $150 (with tip) for two with a couple drinks. We'll definitely go again but the high prices make this a "once in a while" place, not a date night staple. read more
